Bruh I'm so hyped. I got both him and Zelda preordered from GSC and I'm even getting the brown Figma horse for him to make his shots more unique since I'm already known for pic related on a white horse on Instagram.

The only thing that could top it would be The Hero of Time himself

I broke Batman right after this shot. I was testing the settings and wanted to put it in a more interesting pose and the foot just fell off the rocker like a peanut tumbling out of its shell.

Not as infuriating as the time my Figuarts Sailor Moon fell off the top of a 7 story parking garage.

you're photos are great and all, love the adventurer-like appeal to it, but i'm just too autistic to see Skyward Sword link on a horse, with a cape, and a bird. this is not how Skyward Sword link is depicted officially, and its not his canon appearance either, so i don't like these pics.
i'm so looking forward to your shots with TP Link though. just don't give him the cape.

>Skyward Sword Link on horseback

It was the only Figma Link available when I started out. This is why I'm so hyped about the Twilight Princess Link. I'm getting the brown horse for that one.

More than the version of Link used I thought people would have a problem with a white horse. A lot of people (mostly chicks) take Link outdoors so I wanted mine to unique and its since become not only a staple but kind of a signature feature on my gallery.

I got him from Adeno when he put it up on r/toyexchange. If you check out his review its literally THIS exact horse:

http://adenofuntime.blogspot.com/2015/10/figma-horse-white-review-fun-time.html

You wanna talk about autistic? I once gave serious consideration into how I was going to incorporate an actual Shoebill stork as a Loftwing. The stupid part is that the thing that eventually dissuaded me from it was the fact that they don't actually come in red.

>>6138326

Keep an eye out on the boards. I tend to put them up on Photo Generals, Figma General, and occasionally Nintendo threads.

Link and the horse are my favorite subjects so I take them out every time I shoot.

>>
>>6138537

Never gonna happen. If the Japanese had any interest in American Presidents they would've done one by now. You're more likely to get a WWE figure of him.
>>
>>6138507
Hopefully Bandai is smart and produces one under the WWE banner, since he's in the WWE Hall of Fame and all. It would be a clever way of producing a Trump SHF without getting liberal babies crying about it too much.

>Bandai: "Oh no, we are not making this to make any political statement, no sir. Our Tamashii Nations team is just making another WWE SHF for wrestling fans to have fun with. Now pls go and stay go."

Can't wait for you to get butthurt when he puts Israel before America, passes TPP, and refuses to prosecute his old friend Hillary. Bitch.
>>
>>6138586
I don't think Bandai would ever do it out of interest in American politics, but because Trump is a "character" whose can push merchandise. Especially now. A President as a wrestling SHF is already a fun concept and mingles well with the oddities found within WWE's history.

It would make a versatile toy to have fun with.

Come on man, really?
>>
>>6139032

We all gotta start somewhere. Keep at it
>>
>>6139032
>that framing
>that posing
>that focus
>that lighting
I mean, if you had fun setting it up then keep at it as long as you plan on making the effort to improve.
>>
>>6139032
Just gotta learn how to maneuver your camera and use it's settings to your advantage, you keep at it
>>
>>6139032
People will tell you this is a bad shot, and it kind of is, but like >>6139141 and
>>6139187 said, practice makes perfect. You probably need better lighting most of all, but

>cropping helps: you've got a ton of space on the right that's not doing anything, while vader's head is cut off. empty space above characters can produce some interesting psychological effects, but this ain't that
>vader's cape is obscuring most of his body, maybe move his left arm out and back so it pushes the cape out of the way and looks dramatic?
>vader onehanding vs luke twohanding can imply a lot about what's going on, like luke's barely holding on compared to vader having an easy time. vader just kind of looks akward here, maybe turn him away from it so his arm. also vader isn't looking at luke, but I don't know if the toy can actually look down
>sometimes it helps to actually stand up and see how a pose feels, and try to recreate it. You've probably seen enough swordfights to know where your arms and legs should go
>learn some angles. This might look a lot better if it were over-the-shoulder shot from behind luke. blam, luke looks small and a little blury, vader looks big, menacing, and is clearly the threatening focus

TL,DR: Look up some youtube channels that talk about cinematography. There's a ton of camera work that's done very deliberately to have a certain visual effect, but looks totally normal because you've probably been seeing all your life. Even the average shitty sitcom plays by the rules.

>>6139271

Has some good critique, ALWAYS take critique, even if it isn't so nice. You might learn something

YouTube channels on cinematography are awesome, I devour them specifically for my toy photography but I'd also spend some time learning some artistic concepts like color, composition, and lighting. Being artistically inclined or knowing how to draw helps a lot but be careful not to over estimate your pics.

Look at pic related. That was one of the toy pics I remember being impressed with myself. It's ass, right? At the time I thought it was pretty awesome, so awesome that it'd somehow cancel out the fact that there's a keyboard back there.

Now look how far I've come:

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I'm the best there is but I think I'm decent enough to lend some advice.

Last but not least don't waste all your money jumping to the latest and greatest kit right away. The camera doesn't make the picture, the photographer does. A shitty photographer with a $14,000 camera kit will still take shitty pictures. Some National Geographic level dude will take a good picture on a disposable camera.

I use a Sony Alpha A200--- FAR from awesome but it gets the job done. I use it it because I frankly don't think I NEED anything fancier. I'll link a non-toy photo I took with a cell phone.

Point is, the tools by themselves won't make a great picture but if you're willing to actually learn and put in the practice you'd be surprised what you end up with.

TL;DR: learn art and learn actual photography

Hey, you're probably the guy who recommended that one here a month or so ago then. I've gotta thank you, I bought one and I've honest to god never had this much fun doing pictures. Sorta wish I'd sprung for the one model with live view now, but hey, next time.

>The camera doesn't make the picture, the photographer does. A shitty photographer with a $14,000 camera kit will still take shitty pictures. Some National Geographic level dude will take a good picture on a disposable camera.
I completely understand what you're saying here, but I'd also like to say that I did shit on hard mode for like a year+ with a two year old camera phone, and I 100% regret that now. Yeah, technique is really important, and yeah, I'd like to say I've learned something by trying to squeeze blood out of the proverbial turnip for so long, but even a nine year old dslr makes things so much easier it's crazy. Especially for macro stuff, which most of the stuff in this thread is gonna be. If somebody's even just barely into photography and can foot 150-200, I'd recommend picking up something like that in a heartbeat.

>>
>>6139858
With just Raiden specifically? Ummm...I don't really know. I mean, I can think of a lot of iconic MGS2 scenes, but almost all of them require other figures (which I don't know if you have or in some cases do not exist) or elaborate dioramas. For instance, the harrier fight, Fortune's introduction, Vamp running on the surface of the water, fighting three Rays at once, running around Arsenal Gear naked, etc.

I fiddled with them quite a bit, I tried to emulate pic related but the figures either kept falling over or looked super awkward so in the end I said 'fuck it' and that's how I got what I just posted. Not trying to make excuses for my shoddy work but limited space on the figuarts stage didn't exactly help either.

Personally, I don't like black backgrounds. They make everything seem too muted. But then again, it is a white figure so maybe a white background wouldn't work too well with him.

Dunno what he is doing in the first pic.

Second pic looks fine, but I don't personally know what it's referencing if anything.

Third pic is...A googly face sort of? I dunno.

For the first pice, make sure the pose's silhouette is discernible. That's a really poor angle of whatever you were going for. Pic 2 and 3 are fine, but give more character/exaggeration to the poses. Look at reference photos or act out the poses yourself and see pay attention to how every part of the body moves/is positioned.

And in general, keep display bases out of photos as often as you can. Either find a way to not use it or edit it out in post. It's super distracting, especially in the first pic where it's in focus and taking up a quarter of the photo.

Also, your exposure may be too low? Not sure, but the photos feel a little too dark, but that may just be the black background.

Nice but that background is too distracting. Plus, the dark area behind the black droid makes it hard to see his details.
Either
1 turn on the light in that part of the room
2 do the same poses, just reverse it (going R to L instead of L to R)
3 use a different background. (A blank wall or something)

I got you

>>6142696

Lose the stand when you can but if you can't do your best to hide it. Figmas come with that angled extension, you can mount it sideways then do your best to hide the stand behind the figure. Whenever you can't then Photoshop it out. If you're like me and don't have Photoshop then there's a handy little app called Pixelmator but its a pain in the ass because you're using a smudge tool because there's no clone stamp.

See pic related. If you look at the Stormtrooper's waist you can see where the stand was and where some of it still is.

Try to exaggerate movements a little more. As I stated earlier it helps if you mime the pose when you're putting the figure in position.

>>6142699

Better, stand is less distracting and would be easier to 'shop out. I know what you're going for here but I'd put the knees closer together with an ab crunch forward and the head down a bit.

>>6142700

This is also good. I'd bend the torso joint down toward one side more so it exaggerates the gesture and better implies movement

The Black background is tricky. If its overused then it makes things seem repetitive and uninteresting. However if you're suggesting a minimalist concept like what >>6142705 did then it would work very well.

However, It doesn't seem out of place with your pics because a classical work of art against a black background looks like something out of a PBS show. However the figure is one solid color-- a color that directly contrasts against the background which is good but its still a muted grey.

Play with your colors or some (LIGHT USE OF) filters to add hints of reddish brown or baby blue. Both evoke marble stone.

If you have a DSLR you can use a shallow depth of field to blur out the background and add a splash of color and light so it's not completely devoid of a background. Also like in pic related.

Are you using a cell phone? If you are then shooting in the dark isn't going to work all that well. It's the very thing that pushed me into getting a DSLR.

I use Sony A200. I've said it many times but I'll say it again--- as far as cameras go it's far from great but it's **good enough**

It's great beginner shit because it's reletivley cheap as far as cameras go, $200 but you gotta learn how to program it for whatever shot you're taking. If you use a DSLR in the dark set then you have to keep it stationary and that goes for the light source as well. Setting it on a timer keeps you from shaking which causes blurring.

If you have to use a cell phone then stick with bright natural light. Pic related was taken with an iPhone 4.

Better, less distracting.

I'd place them onto of something so you don't have the floor and edge board cutting through the picture and if possible move it away from the wall so you don't pick up as much of the texture.

A lot of people who use a blank background will either have a cloth or posterboard folded (but not creased) against the wall of something.

Make sure your lighting doesn't accent the curve, if you have a DSLR having a shallow depth of field helps.

Less distracting, better light. Good contrast, but that wall baseboard....ugggh.

Get several sheets of posterboard to use as a background. (Black, white, gray, and assorted colors, but make sure they're not VIVID. It's good to have color backgrounds, but you don't want them to overwhelm the colors of the item you're shooting.

Also look into contrasting colors. Don't put blue behind a blue/green figure, or red behind red/orange. You want the subject to pop, not bend in.

Also, I would have cropped the image a bit. (pic related)

I think proper camera height is one of the best single things you can do in general for toys, but yeah, it applies double for stuff that's supposed to be huge. I'm partial to tight, zoomed in shots, but I've seen a lot of great godzilla/monsterarts stuff where the subjects look small but still convincing.

You're using a macro lens, aren't you? They're great for portraits of individual figures but tend to be on the tight side.

Double-edged sword when it comes to detail. I use a wide-angle zoom lens so I get as much of the figure's detail without sacrificing background or other characters

Some do, some don't. Personally I do because I needed to be able to shoot in low light. I couldn't do >>6137532 or >>6138002 without a DSLR.

A cell phone can be extremely limiting but works fine outdoors in bright light >>6143531

General advise on picture taking and cameras can be found here >>6139271 and >>6139342

The moral of that story is that the single most important thing for toy photography isn't the toy part, its the photography part. As that other Anon mentioned, check out cinematography videos on YouTube to learn how certain angles, lighting, and positioning evoke certain things. I recommend Every Frame a Painting.

The second biggest thing is posing. A lot of people just take portraits which are fine but not as interesting as something that evokes movement like >>6144735 and >>6142263 Even if your picture is static you can make it interesting by tilting it a bit >>6138626

Even if there's no movement there angle is important. It can convey disappointment >>6146365 or scale >>6146386

THE BIGGEST piece of advise I can give you is to try to tell a story with each shot. >>6137707 and that photography is "painting with light" so knowing basic art concepts like composition, color theory, and perspective help BIG TIME.

Just like anything else you only get better with practice and learning as much as you can. Check out other people's work in places like Instagram, Flickr, or Tumblr for inspiration and ideas on execution (this doesn't mean copy them)
>>
>>6147159
All of this 100%.
I've seen beautiful shots with a cheap cellphone camera, and absolute shit using a top of the line DSLR.
Another tip is to take your time and think it through. Don't just snap a pic and say "whatever", post it and and say "Sorry for the potato cam pic.".
Take several shots until you get something good; something that you're really happy with. THEN post it. Make it something you're actually proud of.
Nothing should be "good enough". Always try to to your best and learn as much as you can to improve yourself.

>Take several shots until you get something good; something that you're really happy with. THEN post it.

Word.

A lot of people just kinda point and shoot and call it a day. Take ASSLOADS of shots from the same angle, different angles, different lenses if applicable etc.

NOBODY is good enough to just set something up and get it in one shot. Some of the most iconic photos in history were pure luck. The good news about Toy Photography is you can increase your chances of getting lucky by taking LOTS of pictures.

After you shoot sort through your shots and narrow them down to the best ones and save those. From there sort through what you're left with and repeat the process.

I personally keep a massive outtake folder to sort through just in case I change my mind about something or later wind up reworking by cropping something else. Pic related are just "the finalists."

It's not uncommon for me to go out for several hours and take upward of 300 pictures just to wind up with maybe 6 that I really like.

You're gonna need a light source coming from above for even light distribution
>>
>>6148366
I can probably find a third light to take care of that.

This was just a quick test to try out what they got me and I shot for high contrast between the two gels.

From my understanding from theatre tech classes indirect or natural lighting works best.

Damn right. If you take that outside to a patio table or something on a sunny day you're going to get some rich, evenly distributed light.

I mostly shoot outdoors but when I shoot indoors I do it by a window. Sometimes I take pics I don't intend to share just because the light is good. See pic related

Try this I saw it on Futaba a while ago.
Put either a mirror, or other reflective surface (White card, foil covered cardboard, etc)on one side of the figure. Use one light from the opposite side, and take the 2nd lamp (where the reflector is now), and put it up top.

I can't find the original pic, but it was something like pic related.

It's a long sob story, but the short of it is I bought a refurb, the body and lens motor died immediately, Nikon told me tough shit.

Repairing it cost as much as the camera, so I pushed it to the back burner thinking I'd just get another camera. That was like three years ago, augh.

well if they're using a camcorder they're most definitely not doing a photo shoot, I'm just saying it's rare to see a camcorder on any film set when you've got some decent grip and lighting equipment
