Damn, Fangry looks impossible to paint. I'd probably be able to paint the grill on his mouth but the eye section is microscopic. I'd have to somehow paint the eyes red, and a section of the face vanilla.

You could paint it, you just need a modelling brush and a good hand. But it also totally would not be worth it, because any detail on a TM is probably going to get wiped away due to transformation or socketing the head into a 'bot.

Only got Hardhead, and Chromedome. Skipped Brainstorms since most of his torso is painted, and I've never been a fan of his Headmasters face, while Highbrow's head must have used terrible reference shots. Fortress looked nice, but he's just way too expensive.

The overall colors aren't bad, but not only is it really expensive to import it, the way they applied the paint was too accurate to the show model, leaving sections that needed paint, without (the sections of the face, the grey on the horns, painting the section that used to have the pop up guns instead of highlighting sections of the arm in red, etc...)

Alright, the gun modes on these things is really bad. But otherwise, pretty fun all around.

Actually all we know about the transformers biology is that they appear mechanical. We never see their insides except for brief glimpses and they did seem to bleed a few times in DOTM. Idk I always liked to picture the Transformers as Biomechanical leaning HEAVY on the mechanical part, but maybe they have fleshy insides and brains and stuff.

I found this custom Primal a while back and had been thinking about replicating it. Apparently Bendy Prime and Stockade have the same size balljoints for the head too. I know this one's a little bit sloppy in places, but overall I like it. It has gorilla proportions which I think is fun.

I noticed the rubber antennae first.
I thought it's foldable.
Then I realized that the robot head is one piece of rubber. Yellow rubber.

I really like it.
Robot mode is almost kibble-free.

I got nonnef's replacement eyes for Soundwave and Optimus today and I definitely like the results. I no longer have to look at Optimus' cold soulless dead eyes and I no longer have to look at Soundwave's cheap thin plastic that clearly shows mold marks that make him look like he has two lazy eyes.

I found it interesting how the eyes are designed, though. It's clear plastic on top of a chrome backing (Soundwave has a seperate chrome piece while Optimus' eyepiece has a coat of chrome on its back) which obviously intended to create a mirror effect on the eyes to reflect light make them look shinier. While this effect worked relatively well on Soundwave, the chrome backing on Optimus' eyepiece is just set too far back and no light ever reached it, so the effect completely fails and he got dark eyes as a result.

The quality of the parts from nonnef was pretty good too. There's some little marks from the molding process and bits of flash still hanging on to them, but they definitely made sure that the areas of the part that are meant to be visible were perfectly clean and polished up.

My only complaint is I think the shade of blue for Optimus' eyes is slightly too bright compared to the sky blue color officially used on transformers, but it doesn't look bad and it certainly looks better than before.

The third party one (Ordin I think?) is decent if you really want to scratch the itch, but several of them are kind of weak individually, and it's way bigger than the official combiner stuff. The Hun-Grr was actually one of my favorite third party toys of the past couple years, it's a shame he's a bit large, and the rest of the set is a little weak.

I'd love to see the third party companies focus a bit more on doing things that compliment official collections, like do the Seacons, Predacons, and Terrorcons that look and feel like good, "lost" Combiner Wars sets.

I'll never understand the obsession of Third Parties with overly complicated and frail engineering.
As much shit as Combiner Wars got for its designs, G1 combiners were some of the simplest toys of the line so it made sense that they would get simple figures for their modern upgrades. Then you see 3P combiners and they have a thousand teeny pieces that pop out and fall apart.

I wouldn't mind paying like 60 each for a good, durable 3P combiner team that looks stunning in combined mode if each member didn't feel like it's going to explode when it's being transformed.

The thing with 3P's and combiners is a lot of them-The vast majority of them-Are shit. Quite a few of them were also among the first "big" 3P releases to boot, before companies started getting their shit together and before the shittier companies were known.

Generally, the most solid combiners on the market are GT's Not-Devastator, MMC's Not-Predaking, and TFC's Not-Seacons (who only have 2 members left for release, and unless those last 2 completely shit the bed in every way, it'll be a good combiner).

All of the rest range from "meh" to "raw shit sizzling on a hot summer day".

Combiners in general are pretty ambitious projects, and any given part failing can make the whole thing turn out shitty.

I'd honestly buy GI-joe style action masters though, they'd be dirt cheap to produce and buy and we could get so many characters done in a short space of time. Shame we'll never see it.
