For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

What are some good stands to help MGs stand? Something like the kind that figmas come with but bigger to support MG's standing poses.

Too bad they don't make action bases with more range of motion. I don't always want to have things look like they're flying baka senpai

The action base 1s for 1/100s actually are versatile enough to support standing positions. You just have to be a bit creative with where you plug in the support beams on the base, like plugging them into complete opposite points so the part where your kit rests on is as low as possible.

Why do you think it stained the plastic? Did you leave the pastel wash outside of the panel lines to dry?

I have read about this technique, but the plastic staining you are talking about is a concern I have with trying it. Maybe wipe the plastic areas around the panel lines right after the wash has been applied to the panel lines, being careful not to wipe the was in the panel lines?

Quick question, slightly new to Gunpla.. I've been doing out-of-kit builds for a couple months now, got 5 under my belt, and I'm looking to get into painting, but I'm going to start off slow

I'm about to build a 1/100 Grimgerde and I saw an image on Reddit of someone who used a special red paint on it they got online + a candy gloss coat on top of that, the one in the image

I don't have access to paints like that, I was thinking of buying them online, but I don't know, so I was testing what it would look like if I just painted glossy modge podge on one of my "test" kits I've been using recently for paints and panel lining since I'm new and don't wanna fudge a nice kit, but I always have brush strokes, on whatever I do..

[spoiler]Since I'm new I haven't invested in an airbrush yet, I know I need to, but I'm broke and the modge podge was my girlfriends' anyways, I buy all my kits from B&N sometimes when I get paid, no real hobby shops around, one Michaels but they really only have Enamels
>>
>>6103953
gundam.my kek
>>
>>6104591
Yeah you're not going to get a metallic paint job done nicely with brushes, you need an airbrush for that. If you really want to do that just set the kit aside and wait until you can afford an airbrush, compressor, and the paint.

>>
>>6104608
Oh okay, that's what I was expecting to hear... How much do you think I could get an airbrush kit for, on the cheap end? Like I said, I'm a poor post-college graduate working at a sandwich shop, the two backup gunpla I have on the line are the 1/100 Grimgerde and 1/144 Sinanju I got for christmas

I know Michaels sells them, I think Testor has some that can work with compressed air cans? but those cans are like $8 a pop, might be more efficient to buy a compressor if those cans go as quick as compressed air for cleaning goes

then again my mom has a full sized compressor used to pump up tyres and shit and lives 30 mins away, or is that too powerful? Didn't really see much about how compressors work and what's good for them in the OP
>>
>>6104591
That person went waaaaay too thick on the gloss.
>>
>>6104620
You can use full-size compressors, but those are a bit overkill. You can get a TC20T for ~$100 on Amazon. As for the brush, I suggest a Badger Patriot 105, it's nice and reasonably priced. Skip the cans of air entirely, though, but sometimes Michaels and Hobby Lobby do have decent airbrushes.
>>
>>6104620
Save up a few hundred if you're looking to get into airbrushing.
>>
>>6104629
>>6104632
Ah, yeah that's another thing I was expecting to hear... I guess if I want an airbrush kit I'm going to have to forfeit buying any gunpla for a while after the two I have

That's okay though! Price of being an adult trying to find a hobby, forfeiting things to stay occupied!
>>
>Considering getting a compressor and airbrush
>Realize I am dense and that my Dad has a pretty huge compressor in the garage.
>Both terrified and amused at the idea of having the compressor rip my Gunpla apart with the sheer power it puts out.

If it has a tank and a regulator attached to the tank you're fine.

The tank will contain pressurized air and the regulator will release air at a certain pressure you set it to, like 15-25PSI which is fine for most acrylic paints.

It's mostly airbrushed, the chipping was testing out some hairspray chipping fluid which is sprayed in between coats. It's kinda tough to get consistent results with tougher paint, and that's part of what I was trying out. I was trying to practice detail work with the AB as I got a new one for christmas, so the only thing hand painted is the black enamel wash.

That sounds like a fun time, good job on the results.

You seem fairly knowledgeable. I came and posted a few days back about doing a first painted build with an airbrush. I just sprayed Future on most of the parts 2 days ago, and the parts are colored in a desert scheme of brown and tan. What color should I use as a panel wash? I've got Testors enamels on hand, along with lighter fluid. Black, grey, brown and other colors which I don't feel make sense.

Another thing, I masked parts that needed two colors sprayed on. After peeling off the tape should I give that piece a coat of future before putting tape on the painted section so there is less chance of the paint tearing off with the tape?
>>
>>6105011
I only go that low for wet coats.

If you're extra paranoid, just buy any cheap nippers and use those for tough jobs, while saving your expensive ones for pieces you're too lazy to trim.
>>
>>6105553
Yeah pretty much this. The expensive nippers in particular use harder steel so they can hold their edge for a very long time. Unless you pit them against metal or drop them from height.

You do need to oil it before storage to prevent rusting though. Especially if you are in the tropics.

dont buy sharpeners or the sandpaper youll only fuck up the edge since you have no idea what you are doing and are unlikely to need them any time this decade

if you are serious , practice on cheapo ones and get a good magnifer to see whattf youre actually doing. even then dont try to sharpen for a very long time

after some more experimenting, it seems that the black pastel I used has very potent staining characteristic. I used a more earth-tone black pastel on my char back there and the staining was very minimal (on white plastic, actually kind of pleasing) or not noticeable at all (on the char MS).

This could've all been avoided if I had just used acrylic _(:3/<)_

>>
>>6106199
Windex works great to clean off acrylic paint, and so if you're using Future it will take it or if your airbrush. Though, lighter fluid is used for washes with enamel, I don't know how well it works as thinner when airbrushing because it evaporates quite fast I believe.

It is the first pbandai HG kit they made of the X-2, the Kai version actually, as it comes with the Buster Launcher, but I always liked better the lance.
It includes the binders to make the regular X-2, sadly, it did not come with the Shot Lancer. Bandai was dick enough to make a second HG pbandai X-2 kit, which came with the damn lance.
It also doesn't come with the cloak, but I did one for my HG X-1

Someone who has made the 1/144 Sinanju, this is the very first step of the kit, and it says the back piece of the foot comes out, but it's ghosted, but it has to be removed to continue and I don't see where it goes back, or if it does..

The part looks important, but I can't read what the footnote says, can someone decipher? Or someone who's done it before tell me what to do with the piece

it's not used afterwards, that's why it's ghosted. bandai tends to recycle frames, adding or removing parts for each subsequent variation of it.

Can anyone around here who has both chime in and elaborate more? It seems like a lot of people dislike the RG for being fragile/loose?
>>
>>6107098
>I thought nanju was a modified version of a stolen fed suit that was based off of the nu line.
This is correct. It was then modified and repainted to look more like a Char suit. Hence the similarity to Sazabi. Also Anaheim Electronics developed Nu, Sazabi, Sinanju Stein, and Unicorn/Banshee/Phenex, so obviously data and designs were reused between them all.
>>
>>6107113

Sinanju Stein (and therefore Sinanju) was based off the combined data of both the Nu AND the Sazabi. It's their funnel-less bastard son. And iirc it was meant as a sort of testbed for the Unicorn.
>>
>>6107120
It was the very first RG and has some issues with some of the armor parts liking to pop off and needing to use the poseable hands to hold everything instead of coming with a dedicated trigger/holding hand for stability.

The old HG kits are sorta bad by today's standards. No idea about the newer ones. If you're looking to break away from Gundam, would you mind it being cutesy? I really recommend the Mechatro Wego kits, they're cheap on Amazon, come two to a a pack, and are very open to customization. They stand at slightly smaller than an average HG model. You could test techniques on them or whatever.

>>
>>6107441
Its less than 10 years old and people are still clamouring for them to expand the line further so of course they haven't made an updated version of it yet. They've been busy making other RG.
>>
So I've got some kits that I built years ago, back when I first started.

They're unpainted, unpolished and essentially just snapped together with some decals and dry transfers (and horrible panel lining).

Most of these have had their decal sheets discarded, and I don't have any kind of painting (or even topcoating) setup (yet).

Would you bother keeping these kits? I'm moving next month and just wondering if there is any worth in keeping them other than looking decent from far, far away.

Now that's an improvement!

Crimson was by no means bad (and perhaps "thematically correct") but I would've loved to see this go up against the 2-tone Kimaris even more.

If you'd like to make it a little more personal (pardon my nerdiness):
First, Grimgerde is V08-1228, as in the 8th of 9 in Valkyrie in Die Walküre
Helmwige is the 6th, so V06-XXXX (no clue what decides the final four numbers)
Waltraute is the 4th... You're Verfor, which sounds like Ver. 4, so we now have V04-4990

FUN "FACTS"!
According to this: http://rick.stanford.edu/valkyrie/valkinfo.html
-Waltraute comes from Wald «rule» + Thrud «strength»
-Helmwige comes from Helm «helmet» + Wig «war»
>-Grimgerde Grim «mask» + Garthr «enclosure»
(I hear Okada's fiddle playing... music to my ears)

Hey /toy, quick question. I bought this kit from my local model shop, but likely due to age, it doesn't have the proper decals.

I don't suppose any of the newer kits or weapon packs have a big set of generic decals? I know the VF-1 has a large set of decals, but that's mainly due to the different configurations.

Just a report for the knowledge bank, I used Model Master Flat Clear Lacquer thinned with Mr Color Leveling Thinner and it worked very well. I've been looking for an airbrushable flat lacquer without needing to mix flat base and it works very well. Give it a shot if you don't have a flat coat you like.
>>
>>6108875
What flat clear is it? Is it the canned kind that you decanted? Or is there some stuff that comes in a bottle?
>>
>>6108883

it comes unthinned in a 1oz / 29.5ml bottle

the number on the bottle is 201503
>>
>tfw you start a build but then stop for a month and now you don't remember what you were trying to do with it
>>
So I have exactly:
>One (1) 1.75 fl. oz. (51.7 mL) Testors Enamel Thinner & Brush Cleaner
>One (1) .25 fl. oz. (7.4 mL) Testors Fl. Red Enamel
>Two (2) .5 in. (1.27 cm) Craftsmart Flat Brush

I have never painted a kit before, going to start with a super cheap WWII plane kit or something from the store, what should I expect with my limited supplies?

tl;dr how 2 paint cheap, poorfag

I'm going to stick with Mr.Color Flat clear even though I'm paronoid that the hobbyshops around me are going to eventually stop carrying mr.color stuff soon.

Heres a pic of the finish, it's been dry for like 10 minutes or so but it dries like a true lacquer so you can assemble pretty much right away with no fingerprints.

They're always complaining about what a pain it is to get restocks or certain colors in and how barely anyone buys it (They through out several jars a couple of months ago because they had been sitting there unsold for so many years that the paint had basically fossilized in the jar).
>>
>>6108932
I like to wait a day even with lacquers because even though its dry to the touch it often isn't fully as durable as it will be once it cures and I don't want to risk scratching it.
>>
>>6108944
It really must be tough for the small guys. I recently discovered a place off the beaten path I never would've known about had a guy at Michael's not directed me there for specialty stuff. The mom and pop feeling is really cozy though.

There's a railroad/general hobby shop near me that has kits that are like ten years older than I am.

speaking about flat top coats, does anyone know how well Future+flat base works?

Technically it's a chain store, although there are only like 5 locations total in a few states.

What are some cool hueg guns? Preferably held in a similar fashion to a minigun or pic related.

>Future+flat base
I did a fair bit of experimenting with it back in the day for pic related and I found it lacking.

Maybe my flat base was old or something, but I could never get annoying white specs out of the coat no matter how well I mixed it or what ratio I used. I think I had like 18 spoons painted with different mixes at one time.

In the end I abandoned it and went with Alclad Matte. I don't really use Future for anything anymore.
>>
>>6109065
why wouldnt you use future for anything? its the cheapest gloss coat you can get.

>cheapest gloss coat you can get
Price isn't really a factor for me since I don't need gallons of it.

Personally, I don't like the smell, I don't like waiting for days for it to cure, Mr Mark Softer eats through it, lacquer topcoats don't stick to it as well as they do to lacquer glosses, it crumbles off joints (unlike super glue).

Basically I don't have any legitimate uses for it at this point. Pic related was the last time I used Future in a project (to seal the plaster base).
>>
>>6109096
Wow anon, that was quick. Thanks
>>
>>6109091
Future has multiple uses, he only mentioned one reason, If you actually painted you would know that.

Son, I know what Future can do, but just because it's the cheapest option doesn't make it the best option.
>>
>>6109121
Can it explode on launch or re-entry?
>>
>>6109127
Yes! It can also serve you for decades using outdated tech and look cool as shit!
>>
>>6109070
If you're equipped to do it lacquer topcoats are by far superior.

I can't think of too many times when you'd want to use it over a lacquer gloss. Maybe if your final coat is something that might react badly with cured lacquer
>>
>>6109140
whats so special about it? whats wrong with an acrylic top coat?
>>
>>6109166

not him but once you've painted for awhile you start wanting to use lacquers wherever you can because the strength makes other steps and even just handling the kit much easier

Don't know, but I do know that Alclad Flat I tried to spray that diorama base with did not stick to Future very much (as you can see the base doesn't look very flat).

First model in at least a decade and first ever Gundam. Real Grade MK-II. How'd I do?

Yeah, I used unthinned Testor's enamels on mine actually. (from the Neue Ziel though)
Stuck on rather well but I'd like to do another with a finer brush and magnifying glass.

>>6109327
You'll need to thicken either the pets or the holes that allow the upper torso to connect to the Core Fighter but it's a good kit.
Once I break myself in on RGs using the Strike & Skygrasper I'm planning to get that and do Linkin Park colors.
>>
>>6109327
Don't own one, but I've heard it's a bit on the fragile side on account of the core fighter.
>>
So I saw the battle droid kit the other day. It's joints are made out of real grade inner frame stuff.

I love the Zaku II RG, and how it looks but damn I'm wondering if it'd be ok to glue the side skirt armor to the frame/joint because it just loves popping off. My question is if I glue it to the frame, would it make it more prone to breakage?

No other parts on it are loose so far to me and I do love this looks... just feel like I'd need to glue some parts.
>>
>>6109327

Can I advise you to pick up something cheap and good too to practice removing nub marks and sanding down parts first before tackling the RG? I think grabbing a HG kit from IBO series could be a good idea for you to practice on first, since they have inner frames on general with armor plates that you snap onto them but are much easier builds than RG.
>>
is that colour generator thing dead for good? :(

So I went out and bought the 1/100 grimgerde and this will be my first model of any kind. I watched a few reviews online and this one kept coming up as a favorite that was released last year and is supposed to be relatively easy to build. Are there any other recently released kits that are well liked, like the grimgerde, that are also good for beginners? Also some of these kits have a million decals, is there any technique to putting on these tiny ass stickers?
