Anyway, kiryu and mg1 actually had designs that felt like they had style. Mechagodzilla 1 a very aggressive and menacing look, and kiryu had a rather heroic design that still had that menace to it (probably a visual nod to the fact that he still had the spirit of 54 in him, from a design point of view)

Mechagodzilla 2 just looks so basic. Even the argument that he's "more practical" than the other 2 falls flat because he has things like non-missile fingers and awkward mobility. Of he was actually a "tank", he'd have projectiles and actual enhancements all over, like the poster.

I find it rather disapointing that Kawakita, who had such a knack for making cool tank and mecha shit was forced to tone down his design for that.

Also I'll never get over the fact that his waist section looks like a goat diaper

They had the cgi model to work with, unlike 2014 this was a domestic film so I imagine it would be easier for them to have access to the resources and knowledge needed to make it work.

And to add to that, they fucked the paint so hard toa just embarrassing. When little godzilla, godzilla jr, and THE FUCKING DORATS have better paint than what was supposed to be the crown jewel of the line in 2016, there is something seriously wrong with who ever is running the show up there.

I mean for fucks sake, a monster that only appeared on a poster looks better than shin, the fucking second form that appeared for such a short time looks better.

The original MechaGodzilla honestly has the most "mechanical" design, you can see intricacies in the suit that don't really exist in other MechaGodzillas (opting for a more sleek suit) such as that neck vent. This is fitting considering that was the Mazinger era, and designers in fields such as anime spent so much attention to every little feature or detail, which would progress to the early '80s with works such as Patlabor, Gunbuster, Macross etc.

OG Mecha wasn't simply a metal Godzilla, it was incredibly "lively," hands would continuously move, it's helmet was a spinning forcefield (that would eventually reveal a core in the sequel!) and compartments of the body would occasionally open, with the actor emulating mechanical movement despite being very mobile. The work that actually went into MechaGodzilla was incredible, and you could see the effects team was proud of it.

Kiryu has some moments of brilliance similar to that, but it's mostly just a wash of silver plates and black under-cables. But '74-75 had the perfect mix of mechanical attention and animated choreography.

Shin really showed us about what a lot of reviews were really about. I can't believed so many of them actually could look at this shit storm and say "oh it's good. All I know is tamashii better pick somehting good for their next "non-mecha/organic" kaiju from godziller, and actually not fuck it up, because shin g was such an inexcusable collossal fail.

Truly this is a confusing hell for me.

On the one hand the SHMA has great proportions and detail-wise nails the look of the design, but it's a fucking QC disaster with sloppy and sometimes non-existent paint apps, and is currently a bitch and a half to get for a fair price considering what you get. On the other hand NECA is affordable and will probably be consistent but has weirdly normal proportions, with a tail that's just not quite long enough and a body that's too THICC where it should be emaciated. Kinda nerfing Shin's freakish disproportional look that draws me to it in the first place. Also NECA's Godzilla figures always tend to dull down the skin texture and don't tend to handle color washes that well for me.

At this point I'd just say fuck it go for the vinyl. Y'know if those fuckers weren't stupidly overpriced now too.

This is the most iconic MechaG for me having been born in 87. The only Showa monsters I knew at the time were the sea monster, Megalon, and Gigan from the VHS tapes I had but this MechaG was used in all the promo material for games etc. that I came across. After finally seeing the film he was in, yeah he's not the most exciting onscreen but he's still great in that he's basically a gigantic tank created purely to destroy giant monsters and even serves as a giant visual "fuck you" to Godzilla since it was created in his image. Just picked up NECA GMK Godzilla at TRU and jesus christ those bottom jaws are painted terribly. Only 2 had jaws that were mostly covered up, and one of those had a big chunk of paint missing from it's spine, so I took the other.
Other than that bizarre stuff, their Godzillas have improved. Paint detail (Besides the jaw) is nice on this one since it makes it looks like the sculpt has more depth, although i would have preferred something more film accurate. No glossy shit though, so I'm liking that.
After seeing the paint job theyre doing for their shin, combined with the updated sculpt they showed off, I'm super pumped for it.

DESU my 2014 Godzilla MA has a pretty staggeringly mediocre paint job. Basically flat color across most of the figure. I've been meaning to repaint it, but haven't gotten around to it.

Sculpt is good enough that it lights really well just the same.
