You're looking at this at a wrong perspective. Movies can adapt a character, give it a name and a different personality and they can defend it as "it's a different generation/universe". Take Prowl of Animated for example. He's a motorcycle ninja compared to the cop car who looks like the Autobot insignia.

The problem you should be looking at isn't that they're not muh g1, it's that they don't do much to distinguish themselves as a character. Bay Roadbuster was an irish bot with a temper but he only had a few lines and no one would remember him save for "wait, was Crosshairs the green guy from the third?"

There's a charm to the aesthetic, and if they used the characters AS characters, people would be able to tell which scrap metal is Brawl and which one is Sideways.

I tried to like him. And he did have some good points. His headmaster is awesome, and even unpainted has a ton of personalty.

That's about it though. I hate both his alt-mode as well as his robot mode. His dragon mode is so limited and floppy that the RID version's dragon-jet seems much better. His robot mode's gorilla arms are frustrating because they're so close to being good. The 5mm holes on his hands are also not the right measurement to hold the guns without stressing the plastic... another victim of superior Vietnamese engineering.

The Starscream sequences in TF1 were pretty memorable tb.h. When he first comes down from the sky sliding on the ground and he starts fighting Ironhide and Ratchet only to retreat and you get a POV from below him as he starts transforming back to the F22. It's not a theory, it's more of saying that they had no faith in putting personality on their cg robots that they spent their efforts on the actors and other things instead of the easiest thing they could do, which is just make headshots of them talking/moving their head and mouth to add personality.

Granted the TLDR of this is that they didn't really care much for the characters up until the third movie where there's a bit more to some of the characters. I think he means notoriety and not just merch. Until the movies it was just a kids show that older fans remembered and kids cared about what was on cartoon network. Essentially once you hit a certain age you were done with it. The movies made it a much bigger franchise and much more widespread amongst demographics. Think of it like the upcoming power rangers movie. Power rangers is still going and exists as we speak, but this is a massive blockbuster that will bring in past and present fans and add more. Its the whole point of these kinds of movies.
