Post your custom projects here; mods, fixes, repaints, dios, effects parts, accessories, 3D printed stuff, or whatever else you're working on.

Offer tips and advice, ask for help, post tutorials/guides, and have fun!
>>
Here's some tips from the previous threads:

Beginners: practice on cheap figures first.

For sculpting on figures: use 2-part epoxy putty like Aves apoxie or fixit.

For tools: try a basic carving/sculpting set like the kind arts & crafts stores have, and calipers for symmetry.
Dental tools have also been said to work well.
Also, using a Dremel is recommended. Minimites (the small $20-25 ones) are fine for starting out, but the battery life is poor. Upgrade to a corded one only if you want to get deeper into customizing. They are useful for stuff outside of the hobby though, so it's a good investment regardless.

For paints: use acrylics. Paint in multiple, thin coats. Brands like Vallejo/P3/Citadel are recommended, because of pigment quality.

Use a sealer when finished to protect your work. There are matte varieties and sealers that give a glossy look. As with painting, use multiple thin coats.

A flex shaft attachment on a Dremel is a godsend and relatively inexpensive. The grinding shield is also pretty useful, but you can improvise one using a cut open soda bottle.

Here's where I'm at with Clea:

I dug a head for a scarlet witch out of the bait box. May end up doing the hair again.

Upside: The dye worked great.
Downside: The dye worked great and it all wound up too dark. Gonna charge ahead anyways and paint the patterns in white instead of black.

I have seen a few people post regarding them wanting a figure of Geralt from the Witcher.

I started making one a while ago, it's pretty easy so I thought I would drop in and let people know if they were interested.

Body is The Hound figure from the Game Of Thrones Funko Legacy line. (If you buy it, make sure you heat the joints first)

Although it's not a perfect fit for Geralt, it does come with two swords which is a good bonus, as well as being able to pass as the heavier variants of armor you can wear in The Witcher 3.

The head is from Triple H, I believe its Mattel game basic series, pretty cheap second hand.

Just pop the figure in boiling water for a bit or the head and then pop it off.

Mine isn't finished yet, been on the back burner for a while, need to finish painting the hair properly and add a wolf head pendant.

There were some wolf head earnings that may fit the bill if people decide to make the same custom.

Sand it down with the biggest gauge you can find.
I used a 2000 gauge sand paper before to polish stuff and it gets me a matte-like finish, though I'd need an even bigger one to polish something into a shiny finish.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could use to build up a Stormtrooper's chestplate and also helmet? I'm trying to throw together a Delta Squad Boss custom for a good friend and I was thinking about using Milliput but I feel like it'd end up throwing the balance of the figure way off. I did a little bit of googling but nothing jumped out at me. I just need a lightweight Epoxy putty that'll harden up and not shrink, but also allow me to dremel it and paint it too.

God, those look like a ton of fun. They remind me of those Blox Zoids from about 10 years ago.
>>
So I'm doing a custom Megatron and I need to pick a good silver paint for it. Ideally I want one that looks nice (doesn't need to be mirror-finish shiny) but the most important thing is it needs to be hardwearing. What are some tough silver paints that won't drown detail? I hear lacquers are very hardwearing and I have some Mr Hobby Chrome Silver, which IIRC is lacquer. I'm not going for a one-off masterpiece paint finish, just want something that will look good on my shelf.

I've just retouched one of those Kuro Chan toys doing that, one had a huge scratch on its back so I put some green stuff and painted it with a CD marker like a caveman then sanded it so it wouldn't look shiny, and it turned out fine to my surprise; those things are all casted on white plastic for some reason and then painted with pretty frail paint that scratches with any impact.
Bear in mind, it's just a little paint you need to shave. Pass it a little and check until it's just not shiny, don't use much force or any force at all.

No idea if it works on ML, though, since they use hard plastic on the torso and hard rubbery plastic for the limbs and head.
Also, I haven't tried it on MLs.

The interlocking charms idea would be fun, maybe a system like pic related? Nubs so when you have enough you can make a full bracelet, the cuffs as backup so you can still use the charms in the meantime. Oh, if the charm matched the animal it came from, that'd be the tits. Gotta be able to show off to your friends that your collection is superior.

I really only got toys on my birthday and christmas as a kid so that "Dohoho too bad little girl you need to collect them all, meanwhile, half of your toy is useless!" shit pissed me off immensely. Did boys toys pull that shit?

Your best bet would be to use a lubricant on the original. You are supposed to use some anyway, to allow the mold to be removed without deformity / sticking.

I'm only semi familiar with lubricants used as release agents for die cast, so I can't specify regarding resin or plastics, but I presume it's a similar process.
>>
Just thought I'd share this.

Editing Marvel Legends Spider-Gwen to get more ab range. I did a simple hack job on a Spider-Girl some time ago, but decided to really go at this. First I boiled and popped the torso apart, then threw the abdomen in the freezer. Once it was nice and cold, I double-wrapped it in soft cloth and used pliers to crack it apart and get the peg out. Then I just shaved all of the inner plastic from the socket area out (about 1.5mm). The peg is held in tightly by a white plastic box, while the sculpted abdomen does nothing to keep the ball in. Just need to pop it all back together with a little glue and she'll have more range. I might wind up cutting a little groove in the hip sockets on the legs so she can really do some splits, too.
>>
I'm looking for a hardware bit that's basically just a 3mm cylinder, does anyone know if it exists and what it's called? I've got a couple problem daibadi figures with too-tight pegholes, so I'd like something of the right size to heat up and try to widen them out a bit. I've got drillbits of that width, but I don't want to actually fuck around and shave any material out.
>>
>>6063547
Can you just ram the bit's shank into the hole?
Also, not knowing what sort of plastic Daibadi are made of, would it not just be easier to heat the Daibadi up rather than the bit since you just want to slighty distort the plastic? If you heat the bit up your chances of actually melting the plastic increase.
>>
>>6063559
>Can you just ram the bit's shank into the hole?
Yeah, that's plan B, I was just wondering if I could find something closer to what I wanted. There are also a couple 5mm holes on other toys I'd like to do the same with and I don't have bits for those.

>would it not just be easier to heat the Daibadi up rather than the bit
This is 100% what I was gonna do though, I don't know why I got it backwards in my post.

Aside from those, I'm still trying to make some blank bodies to use as custom bases. In addition to the Pochaco type I made before, here's a new type of body that's more slender but still voluptuous. Next up is going to be a more athletic build.

Also, I think I'm getting the hang of dyeing them to a fleshtone that matches figma joints, but sometimes they come out too light. It's tough to balance the pigment because if you use too much it can interfere with curing.

Figure I'm about done on this guy. I was originally going to keep the original arms on him but I wanted to try my hand at swapping parts and drilling joints and all that. I think it turned out pretty damn well for something I did in a day, only issue I have is keeping the revo joints in their holes. The new parts are so heavy it really makes it hard to pose unless I do it crazy slowly, so we'll see.

I know this thread is sliding to page 10 but I need help. How the fuck do I go about painting one of these things? I've never painted something like this before, most of my experience has been spray paint up until this point.
>>
>>6074643
First, you should sand it down until it's clean and smooth. As for painting, there are guides and tutorials that go in depth so you may want to look them up (in the plamo thread or the scale model thread).

Generally, you'll want to prime your surfaces, then paint them with multiple thin coats. Afterwards, seal your paintjob with a spray finish to protect your work.

I thought the wave was kinda goofy. If it were up to me, swap ancient one for enchantress, chuck enchantress into the ragnarok set. Do like, Clea instead of comic doc since they just did one of him in the hulkbuster wave, and do the astral figure in a color that isn't weird.

>>6072138
Depends, anon, are you going to bust out the needle and thread for the costume or are you gonna try sculpting and casting something so she'll match the other figures?

I've noticed the hair on the stock ML figures is usually a separate piece you can prize off once the head gets heated. Maybe start with a head from comic scarlet witch or captain marvel (Bonus effect parts with those two) and fill in the gap?
>>
>>6077145
Acrylics, lots of people swear by those citadel paints. With enamels I'd be worried about it reacting with the plastic underneath.
>>
>>6077741
But what if you prime the surface first? From what I've read, people advise against acrylic for brushing because it doesn't cover well?
>>
>>6077738
Do you have suggestions for both methods?
>>
>>6077741
>>6077755
but what if citidels out of our price point, what do?
>>
>>6079675
If citadel paint is out of your price range you're either too broke for this hobby or in a country where they jack up the price way too much. Assuming you're paying like $3-4 usd for your Citadel paint pots, just get them, the cost is justified in their being better paint. Vallejo is also good, and a bit less expensive. Thin your paints, paint in layers don't just glop it on, they'll last longer than you'd suspect.
>>
>>6079980
The best value for paints is the acrylic Testors Aztek airbrush paints with a Michaels 40% off app coupon. You get three times the amount of citadel or testors model mater pots and it can be used for any plastics or medium.
>>
Folks, I'm completely dumb when it comes to customs or what I'm asking right now so if I come by as stupid, please forgive me.

I just started buying some My Little Armory stuff and, as much as I like them...I think they are pretty expensive for what they are and it's something that could be 3D printed.

Specially stuff like Katanas, which are super easy to do, I think.

My question is... how the fuck? I'm willing to buy stuff from people if they assure me it'll work with figmas~ talking about stuff like 10 katanas, 10 rifles, 10 pistols etc...

Anyone?

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>6080029
Don't really understand your question, but I can tell you 3D printing will not produce something cheaper than mass produced stuff. The economics don't work that way.

I thought I'd chuck this in here for posterity's sake, even without taking some snaps right now

I got the ABS, hard plastic on a marvel legends figure to take rit dye. Make up a 30% Acetone solution by weight, same process as you can use to dye lego.

Protip and warning: It fucking STINKS. Not just the normal acetone and dye odor, whatever the reaction that's dissolving a layer of the ABS gives off a hell of a smell.

Upside: Knowing it's actually fucking working.
Downside: Sitting in kitchen at 3AM, huffing mysterious fumes.

Acetone can damage the plastic quite deeply. As in make parts weak enough to snap. Just a warning, I'm sure it's not as bad when diluted.

is 3D printing better than casting in the long run? I'm trying to figure out just how brittle epoxy resin is before I take the dive into buying it or if I should just save for a 3D printer and materials. Would it be better to trying sculpting in hand first and then move on to 3D? I do have some hands on experience with sculpting and casting though.

3d printing is not really a substitute for molding and casting your object, you're just going to be 3d printing your prototypes in most cases. Especially if you plan on making more than one - Casting a dozen parts takes me 2 hours, 3d printing a dozen parts takes me 2 days.

Yeah, I wasn't 100% sure what I was dealing with and just titrated up with 10% more acetone to be careful until I got a result, then let the body soak in a big-ass bucket of water overnight and ran it through the dishwasher for shits and grins to make sure I got the acetone off.

Odd enough, 10 and 20% did absolutely fucking nothing, but in the 30% it only took maybe 2 minutes to take the dye. Maybe the time soaking in the more dilute phases started things off, I'm not sure.

Anyhow, here's where Clea's at. Got the head to paint and sculpt hair for and some more painting to do on the arms, then I'm at a bit of a standstill for the softer bits. She's got a belt and flowing sash type thing and some serious shoulder pads like any true woman of the 80's and I'm not sure wat do to not fuck up the articulation and to keep her looking (relatively) stock. May try something on the line of those thinned-latex posts from earlier in the thread.

>>6087133
>>6087129
Okay.
What other materials can you use to make a mold? My options are seriously limited since I'm not in the US and customs unironically believe all chemicals coming from outside the country are drugs.
>>
>>6087123
Green stuff is extremely poor at holding detail. That's why it's not even recommended for scratch building anything that has sharp details. It's soft but tough in the way a bad steak is, not silicone.

And hardware epoxy doesn't hold strength well when it's thin because it tends to be very rigid and brittle compared to semi-rigid resins used for casting.

You can do it, sort of, but it will turn out poorly if you're expecting it to look anything like a production part.

I have a question about painting. The face paint on my TR Highbrow was fucked so I tried re-doing it. It mostly went okay and I thinned the paint to the point that brush strokes weren't being left behind, but I had a hell of the time painting spots like the tip of the chin, lips, etc.

What am I doing wrong? Why is it so tricky for me to paint small raised details? I'd usually have to blot it on because otherwise the paint would just slide off the edge of the raised detail.

Customizing can use many skills from different hobbies, and some customizers(Anthony) don't want to reveal any "secret" techniques. Most of what you'll find are sculpting with epoxy. Anyways, Glenn Webb probably has the most tutorials for western figures. Check his customizing playlists including the Custom Marvel Legends one where he tells you what parts he used.
https://www.youtube.com/user/glennwebman69

Craig Warrack has some tutorials, search tutorial in the search bar.

>>6093922
Customizers that don't want to reveal their tricks are just afraid that someone else will use it to make something better than they could have hoped for. The "big shots", the Jins of the world, are modding for money and they're afraid the free market would destroy them if someone with raw talent and real dedication stepped up to the plate. Think about it, dude's been doing customs for 20 years now and never once has he done a total scratch build.

Is it possible to cover up small details with primer?

It's my first time customising. At the moment I'm sanding down some Nendoroid arms that have some subtle indentations; for example, where a sleeve cuff meets the arm sleeve. I've sanded down as much as I can, but they are still vaguely there.
So I'm wondering if it's possible to get a smooth surface there, if I apply a few extra sprays of primer?

I never know whether or not these posts are legit or poking fun at the included pic. If this is yours, you know what, pat yourself on the back. It's not great, but you're off to a great start. Looks better than my first custom ever did. If you had fun doing it you need keep making more, you'll be fantastic one day.

The simplest Cobra Commander.

>Dr. Strange Torso with silver paint on neck. >Added extra leopard-spots to gauntlets.
>Retaliation Cobra Commander head and webgear
>Gloves from the Jurassic Park "Mercenary prototype" you get from chinabay.
>Legs from some Marvel Universe figure on the "Tall Skinny" buck.
>Cutlass from fodder. Still haven't modified the scabbard to fit his Retaliation belt yet.
>Plan to glue a holster to his thigh once I find a good set of legs for him.

I'm not too happy with the legs DESU. I might slap some more-poseable ones on there to go with the extreme poseability of the torso.

The hell with the Pursuit of Cobra "Ultimate Cobra Commander". -THIS- is the Ultimate Cobra Commander in my book.
>>
>>6105162
I'm afraid Destro's the only one who can pull off leopard print.
>>
>>6105315

This was actually "Born" as a Destro as Cobra Commander custom, so you're not far off.

I've got an elaborate storyline where the Commander has died/gone missing and several of Cobra's top brass are trying to take the position and name for themselves.

Destro is one of them, Tomax and Xamot take turns being the commander. Zartan believes The Commander is still alive and is out looking for him with the Dreadnoks. Mindbender is trying to make a new Commander (Where Fred comes from. And Billy is thus far a failed Fred who has gone renegade for his own purposes.)

The chemical you're deriving from the process is casein, which is used in casein paintings that have lasted for centuries(millennia?) So, no.

As a side note, modern toys are being produced from plant based plastics replacing petroleum based ones.

But I like the other anon's idea of using pewter. I just don't know if you can get the heat resistant kind of silicone. Although I think Papi anon that uses a wood epoxy to cast parts. Don't know if you can get that either.

Anon, check your local hardware and automotive stores for pic related. It's a hand-mix epoxy putty that has a working time of about 20min once mixed, 5min hardening time for last-second warping/stretching you may want to do, and a 2hr cure time. Be sure to powder your mold with talcum/baby powder to prevent air pockets that can form on accident. The epoxy (once cured) can be sanded, carved, drilled, and can be warped through boiling (depending on how thick it is). Best of luck to you!

newb here, does anyone know how to make a head with faceplates like a figma? I want to make a blank head (with no hair) that fits onto a doll body like Obitsu or Pure Neemo. Would I make the socket just by making a negative in a material with the doll's neck peg?

How would one go about making a custom Headmaster Fangry? He wasn't released with his transtector, just as a head robot. I was thinking Twinferno repainted with a new beast head, but I'm not sure how I'd go about that since twinferno's dragon heads are also his arms.

Now I'm thinking of adding extra swivels onto twinferno's arms and have the two arms merge together to form the wolf head a la Beast Wars Neo Stampy.

He'll have kibbly hands, but that's the only solution I can think of right now.
>>
>>6118492
Give him real arms that just fold onto his back like how the original's legs just hung off the back, have the head fold onto the back in robot mode just like the original.
>>
>>6118410
>>6118413
Take both. Remove Twinferno's and give him Mindwipes robot arms to hid up their since they compress so well and add Mindwipe's bat head to the torso. Could get tricky getting the beast head to go to the back of robot mode.
>>
>>6118716
Hm. Not a bad idea.

Can the arms on those two easily be swapped out? A lot of the balljoint sizes on TR stuff are the same.
>>
>>6118724
No, Twinferno's robot arms are bolted/screwed in, you have to mod the ball joint in or mod Mindwipes arms into the red shoulder guards of Twinferno
>>
>>6118724

You could probably just remove Mindwipe's arms at the top of the elbow hinge and try to repin it into Twinferno's upper arms.

I think that would make a good base actually. The proportions would work well. The calves and shins are fatter and would save you a little bit of build up. Different anon here. You might want to check out the Obitsu Baby figures. There's supposed to be of 1:6-ish scale toddlers but the body and limb proportions might be a good fit for you. Bootlegs exist on EBay and aliexpress, just labeled as body-kun/chan instead, but be advised that joints will be hit or miss on fragility and tightness. The figures stand roughly 4"/11cm.
>>
>>6120639
Those look like a nice cheap option.
I am not too crazy about the wide midsection but at least I wouldn't have to chop up a $40+ figure.

You could get some epoxy putty and make a new midsection since it's just a hollow plastic part not permanently attached to anything.
