Most of the time they're like an action figure, a 3D puzzle, and a car or dinosaur rolled into one. You can display the robot or the alternate mode, but part of the reason most of my TF shit doesn't leave my desk is that they're fun to just fiddle and mess with. Even the third party stuff and things aimed at collectors are generally solid and sturdy enough to be constantly handled. On average they may not be a intricately painted, sculpted or articulate as something that's just meant to be a figure, but dems the breaks.

For the record I don't understand the stiff standing shelf-ter-fucks that plague the collecting scene either.

For me, that's not just Transformers, but countless other combining mecha figures. I don't know why people whose to make an example out of transformers specifically. But anyway, the reason I prefer actual combining figures is because the combining aspect gives them an interesting depth to the figure, where you can see where parts change and the like. Where as, most non-transforming versions of these characters will render these areas as patches of minimal detail, or forego detail entirely. It makes it so much more satisfying to see a figure that really looks like a full fledged design. If non-transforming figures had sculpting that made them look more intricate, I'd be more up for buying them. This thread is pretty quiet. Anyway, I moved recently and am slowly getting my office/toy lair setup. It's taken forever. Had to paint, rip up carpet, lay down flooring, change the lighting and put up blinds, it's coming together though.

Here it is without any toys, since it's going to probably wind up looking a lot busier once I fill the cases. I aim for the clean museum-ish look but not totally sterile.

Going to dump some pics, the first one gives the best idea of the how the room looks. It's not a very large room, but works well enough. Sorry about the blog, but I never talk about it, so deal with me. The furniture was not purpose-bought for this room, it came from another house that was a little better suited for such items.

I have legit never posted any shots of my collection before. The doom poster I'm sure you've seen before because frankly it's fucking amazing and naturally other people would have/want it.
BUT--look closely. The poster I have is one-of-a-kind. Most copies of this artwork (at the size I have on the wall) are all signed at the bottom and just simple scans/reproductions of the poster that came with Ultimate Doom back in the day.
The one on my wall was put together by moi in photoshop and printed as a one-off. The quality and clarity of the image is much better than other Doom posters.

You're not wrong on any of your suggestions, but I have a really really massive collection and I'm running out of places to store things. The baskets aren't ideal, but it's a lot better than just stacking toy packages into crevices. The room isn't totally finished anyway. There are cords and stuff hanging around that need to be tucked away and some pieces of furniture might get adjusted slightly.

It's tough to balance having a big collection because if you only have a small number of things on display it starts to feel like "why do I own so much shit if I'm never going to show it off" ... cycling out items is such a pain.

You should look into the original Kenner line. Those are fun to collect. As far as PoTF go, they're cheap and easy to find and they made figures that the original line didnt have like Grand Moff Tarkin. I got it before it was graded and singed. Paid $2.5K for it. After getting it singed and graded at a con a few years ago it definitely went up in price. I looked recently and one with this grade goes for like $5K or so. Atleast I didn't see anything cheaper than that on eBay.
