Well, this is it. I'm set up for a half a year worth of supplies and I shouldn't buy more stuff anyway for my own good.
I'm gonna start the t-90ms but still haven't decided how to paint and weather it.

Well, shipping from spain is kinda expensive (at least for me) so it makes sense to buy more stuff at once.

Like >>6016725 said, it's better to order all at the same time. As for other stuff I already have a ton and the weathering things are more fun and varied, so new project new things to try.
As for the kit the turret is just awesome, but there're some other things that are a bit weird or poorly executed. I think they lack experience, but I hope they get on Meng level in a few releases

It's 1 kit, a bunch of paints and pigments and a bunch of catalogues and information books.

It doesn't exactly represent a fortune, Anon likely just placed a big order to save on shipping and get the spending for the coming months out of the way in one go.
>>
>>6016924
What's your occupation? How are you finding time to build models? I always start a model and then just stop. I very rarely get to the painting stage.

For wood I ise vallejo medium fleshtone 70.860 as a base coat. After that I apply streaks of unthinned raw umber oil paint

>>
>>6017488
>>6017507

Correction here for the sake of an accurate paint job.

The A6M did not have black props. It should be aluminum colored or a red brown.
>>
>>6017639

What kind of glue was it? Don't do anything yet.
>>
>>6017687
testors
>>
>>6017698
The gel or liquid type? If it's the gel type just don't touch it at all until it cures because it reacts with plastic to melt it.

Once it cures completely then you can go with the back of a hobby knife and start scraping it lightly, that will do the trick.
>>
>>6017684
I was looking online and saw that to but i dont have the colors in tamiya. I have a similar in citadel but its a little bright. Ill look at some mixes for a red brown
>>
>>6017702
liquid
>>
>>6017706

Ah, you can use some nail polish remover, use the kind any woman would use, dip it in a cotton bud and wet the glue a bit, it will dissolve it as you rub with the cotton bud.

Just don't overdo it because nail polish remover also reacts with plastic, just not as much as pure acetone.
>>
>>6017710
well since then ive sanded it smooth then cleaned the area with alcohol on a q tip. The reason I was looking for an alt method was I didnt want to fuck up the rivets on the fuselage. Thanks for the advice tho because i was about to use thinner which probably would have ate my model

>>6017706
wait at least 7 hours until it dries then scrape it off and sand.

Don't listen to the assholes in this thread. That is a complicated kit if doing aircraft for the first time and you are doing just fine.

The base is actually the base of one of those plastic model display cases made for cars. Since I was too lazy to make it properly, I outlined the waterline hull with clear glue, then spread lines of tamiya putty to make "waves" across the base. Then, I sprayed the entire thing Vallejo German gray and then poured scenery water on it. when that dried, I drybrushed it to bring out the wake and whitecaps.

As per last thread I went and got X20 and tamiya's panel accent (gray). I put the panel liner on the matte finish. The liner still floats very well so I really not sure you really have to do it on a gloss surface or not.

Did fuck it up with bare plastic with the panel liner though. The pegs for the canon get brittle and cracked. I ended up have to glue everything together as most of the snap pegs are broken.

I have a question for the guys who have put in considerable time building
and collecting. Is there a website or photo gallery that shows scales
of tanks like my picture related.

I think its really fun to see the size dynamic of tanks next to each other.
Like from Germany early panzers compaired to late models. A German King
Tiger next to an Abrams or a T-90A would be awesome. does a site like
that exist?

I tend to buy small kits. I don't have that much space and i'd hate to store old 1:35 builds somewhere in the basement because my shelf is full. So i settled with 1/48 vehicles as a compromise between size and price. I rarely buy a kit over 30€.
The most expensive was probably my (still unbuilt) King Tiger with the Porsche Turret together with some aftermarket stuff like metal barrels for gun and mg. All in all i think it was around 60€. This will be my project over the holidays.

Yes they do. They're not rust buckets like Russian ships, but they can get prettily heavily roughed up after months at sea.

Then when they go back to port they get well taken care of.

Nothing wrong with 1/700 bud, that's like shitting on 1/72. I prefer to build larger scales like 1/350 ships and 1/32 aircraft, but I still dip into the smaller scales every now ant again. It depends on the brand a lot honestly, because many 1/700 kits are garbage and lack finer details, but as injection molding has improved, we have had companies like Flyhawk release 1/700 kits that rival 1/350 scale in terms of details. For example, see their Lutzow kit, it's fucking amazing.

Also, Flyhawk's 1/72 vehicle kits are incredible as well, it's seriously shocking how much detail they pumped into such a small scale kit.

Smaller scales are also a lot of fun to do simply because they require much less time to build and paint / weather compared to larger stuff, it's nice to be able to complete a build in a day or two, rather than weeks.

Hell, I'll probably scrathbuild something (crude and very low-detail) in 1/700 once I get to the ship side of things...

>>
>>6020809
Yeah those black streaks were part of the olive drab grime streaking that I was trying to do.

Most cars are 1/32 right? That's not the strangest scale, it's the common scale for large single prop aircraft. Some companies also make jets in 1/32 that are massive.
>>
>>6025275
I was thinking about 1/24 when i posted that earlier. You are right about 1/32 though.
>>
>>6025275
Cars are usually 1/24 from what I've seen.

And the odd thing about 1/35-1/32 isn't that 1/32 specifically exists, it's that we have both of them when simply settling for one wouldn't really have taken anything away from anything, and instead meant a lot of tanks and aircraft in scale with each other.
>>
>>6025329
Agreed. 1/35 is the odd man out.

Well, post ww2 Russian tanks are almost a fetish and the sexiest armored beasts to me, I'm getting ready for creating a T-series marathon next year starting with the T-90MS warm up that I’m doing now. That said the armata platform as it is now it's a bit “neat” or plain, but AFAIK the turret is either a test bed or the internal structure as it lacks the typical detachable ERA/NERA armor typical of Russian and other armies, although you could argue that with the APS suite it carries it doesn't need it and would only increase the weight.
For me the saddest lost opportunity was the black eagle prototype (aka T-80UM2), the most beautiful and badass tank I’ve seen in years and the turret kinda looks like the one in >>6026891, in kit form there is only in 1:72 atm from modelcollect:
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/948439-modelcollect-ua72057-t-80um2-black-eagle-main-battle-tank
That might be worth to check and maybe do some scratch work to make it look like that illustration, or just hope like me that meng, trumpeter or tiger model notices it and makes a version in 1:35.
And pic related is another that I would love to do. The object 490A “REBEL”, I’ve seen it with several names (Molot and others) but they are variants of the same proposal so more or less the same, Is just badass and aesthetic as fuck

No and no.
>>

They reboxed the Finemold kits years ago and re-released them. Pretty expensive though. They call it "Master Series". (pic related). Prices are $50+

These kits are generally pretty good. (because they are not made by revell).

Then there is their new line of star wars kits. Difficulty level 1 (Prepainted Snap fit without sprues and with sound/light modules), 2 (Prepainted within sprues, apparently snapfit though i had to glue some parts. Pretty big ships, pretty cheap, but not they are, just like lvl 1, just toys).
Then there is level 3. Kinda small kits, unpainted sprues, but pretty easy to build. Weak details compared to Bandais. Not really expensive though. (Around 5-6€ on Amazon).

For children and beginners these might be nice kits, everyone else should pass if its not some super cheap deal. (I got 2 of the big level 2 tie fighters for 5€ each.. still shitty kits though)
>>
>>6028455
cont

The worst thing for me about their kits is that they all are in different scales, even within their series.
Most of them also lack their display stand. Some have it (Vaders Tie fighter for example, while the new, red "special force" tie fighter has no flight stand and has to sit on its wings in the shelf..)

Very weird range overall and clearly not aimed at experienced builders.

Made quite a lot of progress today, the drag is that it has a ton of small things and areas were the paint wouldnt cover then and can be seen and I have to leave them unglued for later, which is fine for 3-4 things but not for almost half a tank... but that's Russian armor and what it makes it so lovely.
And the lack of autism here is worrisome so have some: as the ms version is an export variant, mainly for the Indian but still in the air, I'm thinking of just going full ww3 or pre-ww3 regional conflict.
The idea that I have is doing a Russian crewed t-90ms given by the Indians to use in a relieve operation to a VDV division deployed in the Tibet-Nepal area for anti Chinese shenanigans that got isolated. So I'm thinking of maybe doing Indian colors with a beaten white wash camouflage or the Russian green-sand-black-grey blue scheme as if confiscated before delivery and put on Russian service. And complement this with some slogan in Nepalese or Russian (can't think of what to write, maybe someone can think something good) hand brushed. And give a heavy use and dirt vibe or maybe a snowy one.
>>6027414
Nice, are you going to do the green-sand-black pattern or going on something more exotic? (Maybe Syrian deployment?)

Maybe a stupid question. I normally buy models on amazon or ebay. Never bought direct from manufacturer. Do any companies do black friday sales?
>>
>>6028713
Never buy models direct form manufacturer. They will be way more expensive.

LuckyModel has sales all November, both on certain kits and aftermarket and overall % discount. (Based in HK. I order most of my stuff through them. (US) Just make sure to only order "in stock" items if you're in a hurry. Things not in stock might take them several weeks to get.)

SprueBrothers usually has a Cyber Monday sale, but their prices keep going up and their "Super Specials" have been the same crap for years.

Don't buy from Squadron. They jack up their prices before sales and advertise things on sale only to "run out."
>>
>>6028724
Also, when ordering from LM, it will often be cheaper to ship multiple items in separate orders if you want the air mail shipping.
>>
>>6028556
Better than a Tiger, King Tiger or Stug i guess.

Have you built a Valentine yet?
>>
>>6028713

>>
>>6028761

>>
>>6028764
I prefer to spend my money on manufacturers who put detail in their kits and who're not a one trick pony like Tamiya with their MUH FIT
>>
>>6028761
The Miniart Valentines are nearly unbuildable from how messed up the suspension and wheels are.
>>
>>6028761
>>6028774
Trust me, I have built Mini-Art's Valentine. It's one of Mini-Art's older kits and is loaded with issues. The wheels barely even fit on the suspension, and the tracks were god awful. I almost finished building the kit before I just gave up because of all the issues I was having. The tracks and wheels just refused to align themselves properly. Mini art's kits aren't that cheap anyways honestly, especially if you're buying them in the US. They cost pretty comparably to other manufacturers.

>>6028769
Tamiya kits have just as much detail as anything else. If anything, many manufacturers over-engineer their kits to the point where they make the build longer just for the sake of putting more parts into the kit. There's always aftermarket if you want to spice up an already great Tamiya kit.

Also, fit is extremely important, and Tamiya doesn't only have the best fit, but the best engineering in their kits for what they are. That said, Tamiya is not beyond criticism, I really dislike what they are doing with their recent releases, for example their Panther kit in which they include better tracks separately instead of just including them inside the kit itself.

>>6028724
Sprue Brothers does 20% off sales every weekend I think, I get emails from the all the time like 20% off all Meng stuff one week, 20% off all AFV club he next, etc. That said, always price check with ebay / amazon before going through them because I've noticed some kits they sell are WAY over-priced compared to their competitors, for example the Tamiya 1/32 aircraft they sell are way cheaper to import from HLJ or 1999.co.jp.

This one, the others have a similar pattern I think. Not sure about the ones in the airport. Maybe if one of the companies that partnered with ammo mig releases a t-90a we would get some color profiles of the Syrian conflict or the Ukraine one
>>

I paid around $20 for it on sale. Money well spent.

https://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/greatwall/l3505.html

It's cheaper to buy Chinese kits from HK. I paid around $50 for the GWH MiG-29s and F-15s and they are $80 - $90 in the states.
>>
>>6029784
What country do you live in?
Also how do you like the Tiger model kit? I don't like the way they mold everything right on the turret and not as separate pieces. I'd prefer the Trumpeter kit but myself. How much was that kit anyways? In my LHS the Trumpeter one costs 54 euros.
>>
>>6029805
Do you have to pay any import taxes in the US? Because shipping from China isn't that cheaper than just buying from a LHS, well at least where I'm from. It's because we have to pay 21% VAT on everything that worth more than 24 euros (that's with shipping included). That's why I only order aftermarket stuff like DEF model wheels from China because they offer free shipping.
>>
>>6029810
Nope. The shipping cost for a single kit from HK isn't much more than from the US.

That's a very good price, it's weird that just this brand and tiger model are more expensive than the others overall here. I might order these brands in HK then, but on a big order to lower costs even with customs if they don't lower the prices to a reasonable level within a year
>>6029806
Spain. The kits cost me 75 with the paints in a preorder combo from the online ammo mig store (now they sell it there for almost 100€ which is pretty crazy unless you can't find it elsewhere). As for the kit itself take into account that the trumpeter one that's in the market is the "2011" (the one with a Putin mini If i remember well) version and this kit is the "2013" (with possibility of doing the '11 one) and afaik trumpeter is ready to release their '13 but it's not yet on the market. The turret details that are molded in are just the base for the ton that comes later so don't focus much on that. My main concern is some of the engineering and fitting issues that shouldn't be on such expensive kit, I know that much of the parts that doesn't work well end unseen but still it buggers me. Overall it's really pleasing I have to admit and worth it if you can buy it in the 60€ range but don't spend much more unless you really want it or don't mind the price, I'm going to get the trumpeter one also and compare them when it's released, I suppose their version will be pretty similar
>>
>>6029831
My mistake, the tiger model one I have is the 2011-2012 version. The 2013 is another one looks like, but I'm not sure what changes in the '13 one as I have the option to put the new LED lights. So with the "2011" version you can build the same as the TM one overall. But as it's not a service tank I suppose that the newest version would be the """best""" one
>>

Lots of sellers from HK or China on ebay ship for free though.
>>
>>6029843
Ebay is risky, especially with Chinese sellers. And LM is often cheaper even with shipping.
>>

Really? I never made a bad experience so far. Quite the contrary.
One time i ordered something for $75 and waited a couple of weeks (as usual) and after 2 more weeks i still got no parcel i wrote the guy and he refunded me fully without hesitation... literally 3 days later my stuff arrived.

And if you pay with Paypal, there is no risk at all anyway even if they refuse to refund, you'll get your money back.

I'll might give Luckymodel a try next time, because why not.
>>
>>6029831
I ordered stuff from Ammo once and dumbasses at customs charged me 23 euros VAT plus postal taxes because I uses Swiss post services. Never again. I'm glad there's an online shop in Lithuania that sells Ammo stuff but they only have Takom models and most of them you have to order because they don't have them in stock.
>>
>>6029866
Ordering aftermarket parts from LM is good because some of them have free air shipping. Stuff like Def model and Live resin
>>
I heard a while ago that it is possible to order individual sprues from Tamiya. How do i do that? I checked the website, but their replacement part section seems to be for only RC cars only.
>>

I've ordered many times from Chinese sellers on ebay, just check feedback before you buy. I've gotten Trumpeter and other chinese brand kits from China for far cheaper than they retail in the US with cheap shipping.

Well for me ordering from them are all benefits and has been a pleasing experience to me (they even called me before shipping to make sure I wanted a magazine in English instead of in Spanish to check if I didn’t fuck up) and the courier company that I usually select is pretty efficient.
But your shipping problem was pretty weird as both are UE countries (origin and final destination) so you should have made an inquiry, but what is done is done. It’s a shame as the ammo store has all their kits displayed in real time stock and carry Takom (normal prices overall), GWH (although their prices are really high like in my LHS), Tiger Model (again, pretty expensive outside of preorders), Rye Field (normal prices here) and Modelcollect (1:72, pretty cheap and varied) so you can get a kit, paints and weathering stuff all in one order without having to wait and get access to brands that are more rare to get in stock in physical stores. Maybe you could try to use another courier company. I don’t know Lithuanian hobby shops so maybe another alternative is modellbau-koenig and der sockelshop as they carry all brands and have a pretty extensive aftermarket also, and shipping from Germany should be even cheaper than from Spain I suppose.
I was checking the T-90MS in lucky model and its cheaper (53.38€-58$ vs 90€) but when you add shipping and whatever customs charge if they pick your package it gets on the 80 something € range easily so maybe the prices aren’t that off, but still can’t justify them.

I messaged and called the customs but they still insisted it was from Switzerland even though the origin was from Spain.
Shipping from Germany at minimum is 15 euros. I buy my stuff from Poland because the shipping is much cheaper but there's only air shipping now (for what fucking reason there has to be air shipping from fucking Poland I don't know).
Recently I started buying kits from ebay. Much cheaper than buying them from a hobby shop. Picked up a Meng Leopard 2A4 for 23 pounds, Meng Auf 1 TA for 20 and Hobbyboss CV9040 for 11. Also most RBmodel barrels are in stock now so I bought one for the Leopard 2A4. Gonna use it on Hobbyboss Strv. 122. I'll see if I'll pick one up for the Meng kit as well.

Poorfag here, because of absolutely abismal working light I use I rently goofed a pz.III ausf L by making my brown paint wash a little too thick and now I can barely see the paintwork underneath, plus with me using a tamiya red brown paint for the wash my model now has a slight reddish tinge to it.

Is there anyway to sort this cafufle?
I was thinking of going over it once or twice with an olive green wash to try and get the green underneath to come though more but at this point I think of would just make things worse.

Sorry no pictures ATM.
>>
>>6030975
What kind of paint did you paint it with and what did you use to make the wash?
>>
>>6030980
Tamiya acrylic paints by hand, i'm not confident enough to try and airbrush tanks yet.

Same with the wash, I just watered down some brown paint and applied it in layers, that was till I got the mixture wrong.
>>
>>6030985
You shouldn't apply a wash over the whole tank. Thats a job for a filter.

Maybe you can re-establish your base colors by re-painting them over the washed areas while you try to leave the wash in the recesses and corners.

Hard to give proper advise without a pic.

It's fucked. Best bet is to either remove the paint and start over or paint over it. NEVER do a wash with the same type paint. And applying a clear gloss protective layer like future helps a lot.
I suggest using enamel paint and doing a pin wash. If you have any further questions feel free to ask, or you know use Google.

If nothing else works... white wash and snow/mud.

You always use a different paint type for the wash. If you paint with acrylics, use an enamel/oil wash. If you paint with enamels, use an acrylic/clay wash. Washes should be done after a gloss clear coat.

Say I wanted to offer a resin kit for sale. Is this the appropriate method?

>design product
>3d print product
>sand/sculpt 3d print until smooth
>make mold from this master
>produce kit

I've got some ideas for some stuff I'd like to do. Maybe even a small company like IM.
>>
>>6033357
All the resin on sale today was made from hand crafted/hand sculpted parts that were recast in resin. Commercial 3D printers can not yet print in a fine enough resolution for the fine detail on scale models.
>>
>>6033428
It would be possible to 3d print the basic shape and add greeblies/finer detail etc I think.

I assume there are basic issues with diy casting as well but it seem like pressure casting is easy enough to rig up.
>>
>>6033434
You could print a basic shape out of resin casting resistant material then add bits and bobs.

But then you could just whittle a material which is resin casting resistant then add bits and bobs.
Which is what they do
Because it's faster and easier
>>
>>6033434
>it seem like pressure casting is easy enough to rig up.

For polystyrene? No. It seriously isnt. You got multi-million dollar companies which cant get it right every time, not to mention their prototyping and manufacturing cycles are months/years which gives them more time to perfect a product. They might make runs of a hundred or more just to test if one mould for one sprue fits within tolerances and failure rates.

You could try, but there is a reason why all the smaller brands resin cast.

No. Ignore the shills.

I prefer lacquers honestly, I can't really speak for acrylics though as I've never actually used them before. Lacquers adhere best to plastics though, because the thinner actually "bites" into the plastic by dissolving the uppermost layer, allowing the pigments to adhere better than acrylics.

>>6035511
Who says that noobs shouldn't buy tanks if that's what they want to build? I mean, if you like afvs you wouldn't start with a fucking ship.
I can't say anything about that kit as I've never build it, but any of the tamiya kits are a good starting point if you buy them cheap. I've said this some threads ago but their sdkfz 222 (an armored car) is a nice little kit and has some PE and metal barrel, it's quick to build and cheap per se. Also their m41 and pzII are beginner friendly and extremely cheap in most places I've seen.
Overall the only problems with tamiya are old releases that lack the detail and finesse of today's kits and the high price of said kits compared to newer and better renditions. So if you can get them cheap go for it, but for example don't buy their tiger 1 straight away as it will be a waste, save it for later.
Also the trumpeter btr 80 as your fourth or fifth kit is what I would recommend you to get more experience with other brands than tamiya.

I'm quite set on this specific tank. It's good to know Tamiya are generally thought of as quality. I shall try your suggested kits after I build the t-34.

This is a very comfy general btw, I like its slow pace and actual discussion.

Nothing wrong with tanks for a beginner. In fact, a tank is a way more forgiving kit than a car or a plane i think.
If you do mistakes you can cover them with mud or hide them as "battle damage".

The old Tamiya kits are a bit dated and lack some details when compared to modern kits but they are cheap and not overly complex and therefore very beginner-friendly. A very good point to start into this hobby.
>>
>>6035651
I use Vallejo "Surface Primer" in either black, grey or dark yellow.

I also have a couple of Army Painter spray cans, but rarely use them these days because i don't have a balcony in my new apartment and going outside to spray is always a hassle. Never had problems with them though.

I too use Vallejo's polyurethane primers, although having just got my first Harder & Steenbeck airbrush I'm finding it somewhat more prone to clogging on the needle. I know it's designed to be used right out of the bottle, and I've had no issues doing so in the past, but I feel as though my cheap Chinese airbrush dealt with it far better than the expensive German one... So far, the only thing I've managed to do with it and be pleased with was clean it easily. I'm finding the lack of a trigger lock (the device to prevent over-spraying?) a hindrance, and having to thin my paints differently is taking some getting used to.

Even the ones that tamiya made during the 1990's are considerably cheap

Their Panzer 4 ausf h's costs around $20 and an easy assembly

Sand it and that's how you make a workable track from single link or 'magic tracks' tracks. Trade money for time though

Why did you buy a Tamiya Tiger?

The dragon ones that are available at our local hobby shop are using DS tracks

Single band tracks are an instant bone killer for me

>actually making putting together the tracks an even bigger pain in the ass
Seeing this and imagining all the work almost gave me ADD. Really cool though.

What are you using to hold them together, is that just copper wire?
