For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

So based on the previous poll, the winner is "Unspecified non-Bandai build."

What that is, however, I'm not too sure. We can do something with Kotobukiya in general, the SRW line, the Frame Arms (or Girl) line, something with tanks, aircraft boats, or even just a literal "Submit something that isn't Bandai" build.

Thoughts?

Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

I think "anything not bandai" is my favorite option because people have such different interests it's likely to get the most submissions, many people may not even be able to get a kit in a reasonable amount of time if they don't have something lying around

Last option. Gives people more room to branch out and find new, cool robuts.

It really should just be, anything that isn't by Bandai.
There are tons of plastic kits out there by different companies, will be interesting to see some non Gundam for a change.

how about non-gundam kit in gundam style?

a T-34/85 with Zaku-II decals, Leopard tank with Zudah kitbash, etc
>>
>>6007465
Please just be quiet for a couple of threads.
>>
>>6007494
I understand why a theme for everyone to work towards might make it better to judge but alternatively just letting people build a non Bandai kit how they want works as they don't have to worry about if they have a certain decal, a certain paint colour etc. Plus they can build something that they want for their own display which I think it why the competition before the SD one had a pretty decent turn out.

Could always just include a few optional goals like a kit with Zaku decals, or a kit with X kitbash or in X color scheme which would allow for a level of judging if multiple people aimed for the goal but doesn't restrict anyone else.

So the new group build has me interested in non-gundam kits. Armored Core stuff looks pretty cool, how much paint/glue is required, if any? Frame Arms also look neat but I heard they have crappy joints and need lots of paint. Any other suggestions? I like tacticool shit obviously.
>>
>>6007429
1999 and Amazon have it.

Like 2 years ago the Zoids dev blog said something about starting a new phase in the HMM line, then went radio silent after that.
>>
>>6007619
Kotobukiya has tried going the way of Bandai so their kits are snapfitter friendly to some extent. Some of their kits even have pre-painted parts on the runner. It's just that their color separation isn't as well thought out and can be bloated with tons of runners, making them time-consuming to even snap-fit.
>>
So it seems like the general consensus is to build anything that isn't Bandai. Do we still want painting to be a requirement?
>>
>>6007691
I imagine it doesn't matter much if non-painters enter as they probably won't win. Might as well let them expand their horizons by building some non-bandai stuff anyway.
>>

I'm currently experimenting with Vallejo acrylic paint for some detailing work on my RX-78-2 Revive. I believe i've found a good ratio of thinner/paint to use but I'm not sure how long I need to wait before applying new coats. Anyone know?
>>
>>6007820
What's your ratio? I'm about to start painting with Vallejo acrylics, new to painting.
>>
>>6007820
probably 10-15 minutes, until it looks dry and then a few more minutes. acrylics are very quick drying compared to other kinds of paint
>>
>>6007820

What thinner are you using? I only use it for detailing and typically use tap water which works well
>>
>>6007823
Don't be so obsessed with thinning ratios. Start with a bit of paint, add a tiny bit of thinner, and test it on some spoons or some shit. If it's still too thick, add some more thinner. Too runny, add some more paint. Just try and get it to a nice consistency
>>
>>6007823
2/5 paint to 3/5 thinner is working for me. You don't want to apply too much thinner lest the paint runs and that's not something you want when doing detail work.
>>
>>6007827
The vallejo brand thinner. It was recommended for use by GG himself.
>>
>>6007840

>>
>>6007814

>>
>>6007857

>>
>>6007824
This for another normal coat of acrylics.

Longer if you're going for a wash. Hours if you're going to sand it or so. And if we're talking oil/enamel wash followed by white spirits rubbing to clean it up, let it sit a few hours, slap on an acrylic varnish, and then give that at least twelve hours, preferably a full day at least.

>>6007827
>>6007840
Tap water is all you need for brush painting Vallejo. With Tamiya I'd say it even works better than their X-20, the alcohol evaporates too fast. The special thinner might be needed to airbrush Vallejo well, haven't tried.
>>
>>6007827
>>6007840
>>6007913
Future works extremely well for thinning vallejo. It has the same consistency as their thinner, rather than water which tends to make the paint too watery quickly. It also has the advantage of being clear rather than white while still wet, so it gives you a better sense of how the color looks, and most importantly it makes the paint dry with a harder finish. I've experimented with it a bit and Vallejo thinned with future is noticeably harder to scratch than that thinned with water. It's also cheaper than the thinner medium.
The only disadvantage is that it adds a slight gloss to flat colors, but that shouldn't matter at all since if you're painting you'll be applying a top coat at the end anyway.
>>
>>6007814
Yeah, I'd personally like to try out a Macross kit

For me, all of the Unicorn MGs. They all look sexy as shit, but they're all on the upper end of MG prices. ReZEL C type or Banshee are 55 and 50 dollars respectively. Even then, I like the blue with green color scheme of the Commander ReZEL better than the C type, but the C type has more weapons. Then there's the Sinanju at 65 dollars too.

I might get the Delta Plus soon. Not being able to stand is a non-issue because I'll probably slap an action base on him anyways.

Enamel wash is a panel wash with enamel paint, which can damage plastic, so you want some sort of topcat under it. An acrylic topcoat like Future will work fine unless you think you're going to screw something up and redo panel lines several times.

Ok, so get a LOT of plastic spoons for practicing on, gotcha.

Leveling thinner is a lacquer thinner + retarder.

Tamiya acrylic thinner is iso alcohol + additives.

You can drink Tamiya acrylic thinner for refreshment on a hot summer day and not die. Not so with Levelling thinner.

I had a gnawing fear that Bandai was going to cheap out and reuse a shitty older GM mold/engineering, but it looks like the new Ground GM has double jointed arms and legs. This thing's probably going to be the best articulated HGUC GM available, and the basis for possible Revive GMs.

Building my RG Char Zaku II has probably been the worst experience. Its my first kit in a year, adn my fourth kit overall, but I've actively been trying to shave more with my hobby knife rather then purely snipping with my nippers but I cant help but feel worse about this kit. Theres some parts I just give up on trying to denub, like the thruster rings, and the rings for the Zakus "tubing"

That said, I'm enjoying building again, its strangely zen, and rewarding. I just wish I had better results. I've already gouged my finger twice.

Are the hands really that bad?
Because I rather like the default pair being a set of holding hands...

I just found out the hard way that weeks-long cured Vallejo paint will re-activate and run when in contact with the slightest water.

I was cleaning my desk when my wet Q-tip brushed against a sample palette of paint drops. One of the Vallejo samples on the styrene sheet re-activated and ran.

The Reaper paint samples? They not only resisted running and reacting again with water, but I was curious and tried to chip with my fingernail --- and they resisted that too.

>>Dust on your clothes

What's a good way to stow away working clothes you're gonna re-use for the whole week? In a pinch I thought to wet down all the "exposed" parts of my work clothes to pin down the dust particles, for now.

I was thinking of shoving them into a giant ziploc bag and swapping clothes from a second XL size ziploc, but there's got to be less contaminate-y way, right?

I do wear an apron.

I also did find out the hard way of minimizing dust while sawing, which is that I could get away with temporarily wetting the cutting area/blade surface so the dust clumps up into a paste. Also that a fine-toothed pull saw makes equally fine-grained dust, which is a problem.

>temporarily wetting the cutting area/blade surface
Using water? If the saw is made of steel, use machine oil instead so it won't rust. This also helps lubricate the blade, giving you a better finish for the cut.

>a fine-toothed pull saw makes equally fine-grained dust, which is a problem.
Haven't read the quote-train above to know what plastics you're dealing with, but if it's Styrene that is less than 2mm thick, you can get away using a Nichrome wire Styrofoam cutter. No dust, just fumes.

If you're trying to part simple, thin plastic shapes like plaplates (i.e. <2.5mm) you can use the score and snap method. https://youtu.be/U3rwA3RMGxE

>weeks-long cured Vallejo paint will re-activate
I've never heard of this happening. Like I said it will be much more durable when thinned with future, but even thinned with tap water it shouldn't "reactivate" in contact with water. In fact it shouldn't even do that after one hour, let alone weeks. If it liquefied when in contact with water, then you couldn't paint it in layers since each layer would just be reactivated by the new one (this happens with lacquers, and is the main reason lacquers are a pain to handpaint with). And you can certainly paint in layers with Vallejo.

>Hg man rodi had almost no inner frame, so don't expect to see spinner or garm rodi hg any time soon. Landman has a chance since the only different is the color and lower legs.
Not so, it just uses a lot of it's chest armor to make up the front of the torso.
Since the armor is going to be a different color anyways, they'd need to put that on another runner.

>>6009240
>The difference being that the Rouei are piloted by named prominent characters and not faceless, nameless grunts like those (Except landman, that one actually has a shot due to mold reuseand it getting a lot of screen time recently).
Actually I'm thinking the reason we got the Landman Rodi as Earth Tekkadan's MS of choice specifically was so we could get a "flatfooted" retool of the Man Rodi frame runner.
While the Landman still has traces of the "high heels" of the Man Rodi, if you look it lacks that huge insole booster like the Gram and Spinner.
So while the only change for the Landman would be a color change and a slight retool, that retooled inner frame runner could then be used for both the Garm and Spinner.

I think the colors on this are similar to the regular Gogg shades but just with the two effects I mentioned

Do I go for a Shin/Tristar Zaku II or Gouf 2.0? I have a White Ogre but that's not getting touched until I can weather correctly because I realized OOB build would look awful where at least Shin has lots of panel lines and breaks in the white, as well as sick leg boosters.

Me personally I'd go for a Zaku 2.0

Also how do I get my kits to look like that? I have no way to do a paint setup, and I have a lot to work on, but I have a very specific bar I want to be able to hit, so I can produce good looking kits without major blemishes/fuckups but I wanna make sure I have the tookit to do that.

Also never buying an RG again. Too many super tiny pieces with nubs that I waste a ton of time rolling my hobby knife over, but at least I'm getting my sanding sticks soon.

Airbrush. There's a lot of shading going on in that paint job, and a brush just ain't going to cut it.

Also, it's usually cheaper to get some popsicle sticks/ tongue depressors/ acrylic sheet and sandpaper and make your own sanding sticks than it is to buy pre-made ones

To everyone who suggested sand paper.. I've never had any success with sandpaper even though I know for fact that its the best way to keep it smooth and clean.

As I said, works for me when brush painting. I use their thinner when airbrushing. Try it and see what works for you. And keep in mind that depending on what you paint and how (normally, drybrushing, "wetbrushing", some near-wash thing, layering, wet blending, whatever) you may wan to swap around the thinner and additives, there's nothign whatsoever saying I'll stick to water here always.

i want to paint a plastic toy, what should i do? sand it, prime it or both?
and the other problem i have is with the paint, i want to use acrylic, and i always hear that you should use several thin layers.
but how i do that? i mean, should i wait the paint to be dry to the touch or be cured? but that like one 1 day of wait.
and what do i do with my mix paint meanwhile, or the thin layers of paint are in the moment, like when is still wet?
i am using a brush by the way.

Thin layers of acrylic paint dries in minutes and it's fine to add more coats once it's dry to touch. You do not need to wait for full cure.

Mixed paint can be stored in small jars with airtight seals.

So I was thinking about buying this Koto Eva X Mechagoji kit, but was told there was no way it would look this nice in person. I thought yeah, it would probably be that standard pseudo-metallic plastic Koto uses on HMMs. But THEN, I just saw the kit on the right: the Barbatos Iron Blooded Coating Ver. And that's a straight build, unpainted.

What technique was used to coat the Barbatos? I don't know if I've ever seen such a nice metallic coating right out of the box before. And what are the chances Koto might also use said technique on this Eva kit?

Paint sprayed directly onto the runners iirc.

And if you didn't see the kit specifically advertising that it would have metallic painted parts in ads for it then no, it probably won't be prepainted. Such things are usually done on special editions or end up adding to the cost. Chances are that it will be that swirly gloss injected crap plastic instead.

Both. A sanded surface will increase adhesion (might not be the right word) mechanically

>the other problem i have is with the paint
To start, use a paint meant for models/miniatures, the generic art shit is terrible for this stuff. Since it's acrylic, thin the paint with either water or the paint brand's thinner until the paint has a milky consistency. Then, paint thin layers perpendicularly to the previous layer. This helps to minimize brush strokes in the paint. You can paint the next layer as soon as the previous layer is dry (should only be a few minutes). You can store paint in an air tight container and it should last a while.

As for what to do with the pieces as they are drying- pic related. Attach pieces to bamboo skewers with alligator clips (or sticky tack in my case since I had some lying around)

What brand of paint does everyone use? I bought some Tamiya off a friend and I've found it to be difficult to airbrush with. I have history with using Reaper paints on Warhammer models, but I don't know if they are a good fit for painting Gunpla.

Tamiya should be pretty easy to spray. What are you thinning it with?
Mr Color Leveling thinner works better than X-20A in my experience.

You can airbrush reaper aswell, but water based acrylics tend to get a lot of tip dry.
I swapped entirely to Mr color lacquer / Gaia because of it.

I was thinning it with the Tamiya brand thinner at a 1 to 1 ratio. Then that ran out and I switched to 91% alcohol, which seemed to work about as well.

I guess I just don't really see the appeal. The paint is expensive compared to Reaper for me since I don't have a store that sells Tamiya nearby. I also want to do a lot of hand painted details for the SD Gundam I'm working on. The paint dries so quickly that it gets streaky and the brush cuts into it. I've added paint retarder but that doesn't seem to help much. I'm used to Reaper/GW brand, where the paint will stay liquid long enough to move around a little while you're painting.
>>
>>6011579
