Ho ho ho! Hello, boys and girls of /toy/!

Halloween has come to a close so its time to start our annual Secret Santa gift exchange!

As many of you might remember, last year’s SS was far from perfect. I’m a new Santa and I’m committed to fixing the mistakes that were made last time. I’m going to do my best and hopefully we can make this the best Secret Santa yet!

To sign up please email [email protected] with the following:

>Your name:

>Your shipping address:

>Are you willing to ship internationally?
This is an option for U.S.A anons only. However, I will try my best to match international anons with someone else in their country.

>Your wish list:
Make a list of toys! I recommend putting 3-6 things so your Santa has a variety to choose from. This year’s minimum is $20. There is no maximum.

>Message to your SS:
This part is optional. If you have anything else you want to tell your Santa put it here!

Registration will end November 18th at midnight EST. The assignments will be sent out before Thanksgiving.
>>
>>5999399
Can't we put a maximum? I don't want a request saying some hot toys $500 shit
>>
>>5999444
Double trips comands you.
>>
>>5999444
>>5999450

Yeah, we can suggest a maximum.

If someone sends me a list full of $200 dollar toys I will email them back and ask them to modify it. I want to keep things fair for the Santa and the Santee.
>>
nottidisshittuagain.png
>>
Is this the "official" /toy/ SS?
>>
>>5999797
As opposed to what?
>>
After last year, where I sent out $200 worth of toys and got nothing, and my giftee barely posted all the work I put into decorating the box, fuck this. My giftee was probably a grinch, too.
>>
So are we doing the Amazon wishlist way that /co/ does that gets recomended over and over or are we doing the shitty Grinch infested old way?
>>
Nov 18th is a pretty early cut off date.
>>
>>5999824
Problem with that is that unless your tases are things that are in recent retail or Bluefin imports, you're out of luck. Amazon's toy selection is limited, or overpriced.

Your other option is an actual address wishlist, but that's dubious
>>
>>5999797
Yes

>>5999824
The way /co/ does SS works great for them, but I'm not confident it would be best for /toy/.

Basically what this anon said >>5999950

>>5999945
November 18th gives me enough time to get everyone paired up before Thanksgiving. I want everyone to have their SS in case they want to take advantage of black Friday or cyber Monday deals.

I also forgot to mention that I will be assigning people based on taste, so it will not be totally random. You will likely get someone with similar interests.
>>
>>6000027
How will you protect us from Grinches? Old Santa bailed on us.

Can we have a Grinched reparations program?
>>
Would it be a dumb idea to have some sort of "buy in" that you get back once your person receives their thing?
Also seems like a good way to scam a bunch of anons though
>>
>>5999950
You're already giving your address to a stranger.
>>
No max? Fuck yeah, gonna scrooge someone SO fucking hard this year.
>>
>>6000029
While I can't guarantee you won't be grinched, I WILL guarantee that all grinches will be punished. I'm not going to wimp out like last year's Santa.

Keep in mind that I'm going to have a detailed list of who is matched to who. Its not going to be hard for me to find out who grinched.

>>6000059
The maximum is how much your Santa can spend, not the price of stuff on your list.

Like I said, if your list is full of $200 toys I will ask you to change it or I won't send it at all.

>>
>>6000081
I'll definitely create a list of grinches so they won't be able to do SS next year. Last year's Santa promised to do this, but I don't think he actually did.

I'm open to other suggestions as long as they aren't illegal.
>>
>>6000027

'and I'm out. Half the fun over the years for me was exploring other's interests.

>>
OP just let it go. This board isn't what is used to be. The good people have all but left and all that's left are shit posters who hunker down in their generals.
>>
>>6000168
Ah, so if I get fucked this year, nothing will happen and the grinch will use a new email/address next year, got it.

Pretty much this, >>6000201
I may be a pessimist or jaded or whatever, but it's just not worth it, OP. There is nothing you can do to stop jerks from being jerks. Godspeed on your journey, though. I wish you all the best.
>>
>>6000168
Why don't we include their email in the bst as people not to sell things to?
>>
i did this for 3 years and it was great. im down. you guys are pussies.
>>
>>6000180
Same anon
If I can get a job before the 18th I'll join up
>>
I participated for the first time last year and had a great experience, for me half of the fun was hanging out in the threads and riding the hype.
>>
>>5999399
We can all put like 10 bucks in so people who get grinched at least get something. All packages have to be tracked so we can confirm that they've been received?
>>
Since half of you are pessimists who hate everything you buy, we should do a donation exchange where people put in a figure they didn't like much or don't want anymore and send it so someone else. maybe even like that exchange box we had going at one point.
>>
>>6000237
>tracking
that feels like the wisest option to me

I've always been curious about SS, does anyone have shots of years prior?
>>
What's the minimum amount of money to spend? There's really only two things I want, and they're relatively easy to get, so I just want to make sure whatever is on my match's list isn't too expensive (provided I don't get grinched)
>>
>>6000227
my family is going up to NC to see my grandparents for thanksgiving
>cant look for a new job because ill have to request off for a week right at the start
>want to go because i love my grandarents and I wasnt able to go do thanksgiving with them last year because i had to stay home to work

How do you anons afford to buy toys??

>>
>>6000281
Lots of people "grinching"(never holding up their end and sending a present themselves) and a Santa organizer that disappeared in the middle of the whole thing and never did anything to help people grinched like he said he would. He said he was getting married and had a bunch of other excuses like tests he had to study for and the like.
>>

Oh, I see. Yeah, I'll probably sit this out. It sounds fun but I'm broke enough as it is. Getting screwed out of $50 would really suck.

Not criticizing OP, but last year we did 3-5 interests rather actual wishlists which may work better. That way you get something you like but you might have never bought for yourself. Last year I got this cool little Mega Charizard/Pikachu plush that I've never even seen before. It was cool

Here's my loot from last year if anyone wants to see that.

All I asked for was the Sailor Chibi Moon Figuarts figure and I got given all this stuff from Japan as well as my Santa was there at the time of recieving my request. Pretty sweet. I feel bad that she had to spend a lot of money to ship it to me in the UK though.

Thanks again Angela if you're here.

Majority of people included a wishlist though just to avoid getting something they may have already had.

Plus, I appreciated getting the wishlist for my anon because I didn't know anything about their interests and if I didn't have that I wouldn't know what to get them.
>>
>>5999399
This will be my 3rd time doing this. I'm very excited. First year I got one thing and I wanted it and it was simple but perfect. Last year I got 3 things I wanted, and I also went a bit out. This year depending on how gigs go I migh tspend quite a bit

Stop turning your camera sideways for one.

Here's what I sent out last year. As convenient as the Amazon idea may seem, it wouldn't allow me to have bought most of what you see here. My giftee was into retro TMNT/DBZ, and LotR figures, which aren't easy to find cheap on Amazon. I also decorated the box and drew some art to personalize the whole thing more. A few of us do that, helps things feel more festive.

Anyway, I'm probably gonna sit this one out. I was grinched last year, which bummed me out and killed my enthusiasm. Good luck to everyone participating this year!
>>
>>6001789

>>
>>6001826
How much did you end up spending? I'd like to do the SS thing and see what I can get but the idea of getting grinched kinda sours it for me.
>>
>>6001827
>>6001828
I think a hair under $150 or so. Coupons helped with some of the more recent things, thanks to a Barnes and Noble membership.

First year I did it, two years ago, I spent $75-90 or so. That went really well, my giftee really enjoyed the gift and everything. Got a few cool figures in return from my Santa. That made me excited to put more effort into next year. If it did work out better last year, I would've probably sprung for a full $200+ this year.
>>
We could probably do a separate Amazon wishlist one if there is enough interest for those who are afraid of being grinched.
>>
>>6001837
That's really a bummer, you would of made someone really happy.

I can't afford much, so it probably wouldn't be fair for me to throw my hat into the ring as well.

>>6001844
How does that work?
>>
If SS does that amazon bullshit then I'll mnake a SS email and I'll do it the right way
>>
Knowing that some people spend so much makes me want to reconsider participating, I can't afford to put in too much more than the minimum. I don't mean I'd only put in one small thing but the idea of people spending $70+ just makes me feel guilty you know?

As someone plannign on spending more, it's just not about getting. Because I can literally buy the toys on my own. If I'm willing to spend $70 on someone I'm just a cool guy. If you can't contribute a lot try and add personal flair, like a nice letter or soemthing

They asked me for some of those Disney Store Animator dolls which were easy to get hold of and because I was on the Disney College Program last year, Disney gives you a couple of free tickets to hand to family and friends so they can come and visit you on the program for a few days and as my family don't really care for theme parks and I don't really have many friends I decided to gift them away as an added bonus. I hope they liked the gesture at least.

>>6003999

>>
>>6004013
The set up is fine, you can't stop people from being assholes. All it takes is one person to ruin anything.

Doesn't mean you need to be a nigger like the rest of them and ruin things for someone who spend time and money on your ungrateful ass.
>>
>>6004013
we could say the same about you
>>
>>6004025
>someone who spend time and money on your ungrateful ass.
See, this right here is part of the problem.
Yeah, this is a gift exchange, and you're supposed to get something in return. However, If you really want to push the "spirit of Christmas" issue, then giving a gift in expectation of getting something back, even a "thanks!" is the wrong way to do it.
A gift is just that. You give someone something just because. They don't earn it, they don't deserve it. You do it because it's going to brighten up the life of someone else. Even if you don't even get a thank you, or any recognition, you still do it. It's true selflessness.
A wise man once said "The virtuous spirit has no need for thanks or approval only the certain conviction that what has been done is right. That's the true "spirit of Christmas".
Some of you get hung up on getting Grinched, or not getting any recognition via a "Thank you", instead of just doing good for the sake of doing good.
>>
>>6004605
But anon, getting a gift is just as emotional good feeling than giving one.

I don't even care what people gift me, I have no actual friends and getting a gift from a complete stranger would mean the world to me. Not because it's a free toy or whatever but because someone went out of their way, with their money and their time and gave that thing to me.

And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that feels that way.
>>
>>6004728
And..?
My point was addressing people who give gifts, and expect something in return, not those who get the gift.
Yes, it feels good getting something. It brightens your day, it makes you feel like a human being. That right there should be what drives a person to give another a gift. ''Hey I'll do something really cool for this person because it'll make them happy, and it's the right thing to do!"
Not "Hey I'll go all out and give somebody something cool, cuz I'll get something equally cool in return!"

People are talking about how this is a cool thing to do, in the spirit of christmas, and then turn around and gripe because they got grinched, or "That fucker never even said thanks, or acknowledged me in any way.". And I'm saying that's not the "spirit of christmas."
Do it because you want to make somebody happy, not because you want something back.
>>
>>6004758
>"Spirit of christmas"

The "Spirit" part is suppose to go to Jesus or Pagans, pick one.

We designed the concept of giving AND receiving gifts as that is the tradition. Secret Santa is a concept created from that tradition.

We are not talking about jesus, or arguing if it's a pagan holiday or what the spirit of christmas even is suppose to be about. We are talking about the activity and tradition known as the secret santa.

You can harp about it all you want, but it doesn't change the fact you're ruining the participation on the activity, not the holiday, and not your beliefs.
>>
>>6004605
>it's going to brighten up the life of someone else
And they can't afford saying a 'thank you' for this kindness because...? If you're too much of a cunt to even explain that you're grateful but don't have the money/whatever bullshit reason you come up with to not gift back, it's common decency to write a thanks. Don't participate if you can't even do that courtesy.

You sound like a big entitled Grinch trying to shill people into doing really awesome shit and having them accept nothing or your shitgifts in return or else they're being "selfish." Hope you get nothing.
>different anon btw

Wow.
Way to miss the entire point of something because of a typo.
It has nothing to do with religion. Pagans, Christians, Athiests, Agnostics, all give gifts for the right and wrong reasons.

You trying to win extra points in the Fedora Club or something?
>>
>>6004783
You should rent yourself out as an Imax multiplex theater with all that projecting you're doing.

>Don't participate if you can't even do that courtesy.
If you can't be selfless enough to do a good deed without worrying about a pat on the back, or an "Atta boy" you shouldn't either Getting something back is just icing on the cake.

>Hope you get nothing.
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you.
>>
>>6004886
It's you who doesn't get the point. Secret Santa is an activity that requires people to participate in. If you don't want to do said activity, then don't participate. This isn't rocket science.
>>
>>6004912
I got the point fine, it was the opening sentence in my first post.
It's YOU who's getting all fannyflustered over everything else that came after that.
And you keep projecting shit all over the place. Why do yu assume I'm not going to participate?
Why do you assume I'm out to grinch people?
You get defensive and start grasping for straws when you think your hypocrisy might get exposed, even when it's not.
>>
I wrote out my email, so now I'm at the part where I leave it on my tab and not send it and read it over and over again for days making sure it's as good as it could be because I'm afraid that I'll realize a huge change I want to make right after I send it.

I know some anons like being told specifically what to get, and some like it to be more vague so I tried to do both. Some less than $20 stuff, some more than $20 stuff. I'll be happy with whatever I get.

Hatchimals, and lots of them.

Why is this year seemingly such a shit storm, when last year things went along fine?
>>
>>6006822
Fair enough, dozens was an overstatement. Still surprised how many people here are legitimately concerned about getting grinched. On /a/ and /cgl/ it's mostly just a meme and on /k/, /out/ and some of the others it's a rare occurrence at most.
>>
>>6006937
Because last year really didn't. For anyone who lucked out it may have seemed nice, but lots of people got grinched, or realized they sent a bunch of stuff to a grinch, and nothing was done about it.
>>
>>6006938
It doesn't happen much on /a/, last year only 3% of the participants were grinched. But when there are nearly 500 people there are bound to be a few bad apples among the bunch.
>>
>>6005447
I gave my wish list from amazon and I gave some gift ideas so they could either use the wish list I gave or not.

I did the /toy/ Secret Santa bullshit twice a few years ago. Got fucked both times.

First time I sent out awesome stuff in a decorated box, wrapped the toys, sent candy and drawings and everything. And I got absolute garbage in return. Just a baggie of throwaway weeaboo junk.

I'm the one who got a One Piece keychain someone got free from a shaving razor, and crap like a loose final fantasy spirits within figure. Someone just sent throwaway junk just to fulfill their obligation, without any thought or care.

The second year I fully expected to get garbage, but hope springs eternal. I mailed out something I imagined the recipient might really like, but I didn't put a whole lot of effort into it. I got nothing in return, ever.

When I complained about getting stiffed here, I got a bunch of "tell us your name and we'll send you pity stuff" But that's not the point of complaining. The point is that /toy/ is 4chan, and 4chan is a bunch of shitheads just waiting to fuck each other over, and if you are stupid enough to fall for this /toy/bro cameraderie bullshit then you're obviously a naive newfag asking to get scammed.

Seriously they do this every year, and a bunch of noob morons send out expensive things to thankless people and everyone else gets fucked, but they want you to THINK you're gonna get rewarded so you'll take part. It's all a scam.

The best way to participate in secret santa:
1) save your money
2) buy something nice for yourself
3) take pics to show off
4) revel in the equitable return
You got exactly what you wanted and spent no more than you received, while tasting the jealous tears of your peers.

Reminder that last year after all the shitposting was done and paranoia was rampant some of the supposed grinches came clear and admitted to just pretending to be santas/santees.
Fuckers weren't even part of the giveaway and were just baiting insecure fools who participated just to get expensive gifts. When all was said and done it was just a vocal minority making it seem like everyone was getting grinched.
This year same shit's already happening. Y'all getting pessimist before it's even started.
Shit happens, postal service is awful everywhere and packages get lost/delivered to wrong adresses all the time, more so on holydays. If a box gets lost people here will asume the worst and complain here for months when it could just be that.

tl;dr SS is about making others happy with gifts, if giving alone doesn't make you happy don't participate. Don't get baited so easily

>>6020780
/co/ does an Amazon wishlist secret santa if you have any interests there, runs for a solid month or so with a ton of story sharing and stream viewings. Smaller "payouts" compared to the more traditional SS arrangements but last year there was a big push to gift every reasonable list so you won't go empty handed.

Signs ups start around mid sept and end in late oct and this has happened for at least the last 2 years so it's nothing new. It closes earlier than ss on other boards because people need time to get their assignment, think about what to buy, but it, receive it, and send it to their assignment, all of which can take a month or more depending on shipping.

Also /a/ ss has roughly 500 people taking part this year, so it does take a while to get everybody assigned. And that's not counting card assignments or any errors that may come up. So no other board can really compare to ss on /a/.

Sent a photo of my post box, but I don't see how it verifies my address at all. If I said my PO box is 1234 I just need to go to the nearest post office and take a photo of whichever box is 1234. It doesn't prove that the box actually belongs to me.
>>
>>6029518
No but if your package is being sent to PO Box 1234 but 1234 is not your actual PO box then how are you going to get your stuff? It would be given to some stranger instead. Obviously that isn't going to work.
>>
>>6029518
Why are you so negative. Just enjoy secret santa

About 5 more hours to sign up!!

Also there is still a hand full of anons who haven't sent proof of address yet. If I don't receive some kind of confirmation by tomorrow I will consider you unverified and you will be paired with other unverified anons or not at all.

So what's the final total?

I'm really looking forward to seeing the outcome this year and all the gifts everyone ends up getting.
Hopefully, I'll have a decent job again by next year to actually join in. I want so badly to shower someone in gifts, candies, drawings and neat things like cookie cutters related to the toys they asked for.
Then troll them with something weird like panties for your water bottle.
>>
>>6030245
What if you have an odd number? You going to wait for one more sign up or boot out an unverified person?
>>
>>6030440
You don't need even numbers.
>>
>>6030440
The assignments are done as a chain instead of as pairs, at least that's how it was last year.
>>
>>6030245
Just to verify, you have contacted these guys with this new requirement? Some of us browse this board not as frequently as much and they just might not be aware.
>>
>>6030411
I would actually love that shit. I always keep a water bottle on my desk and the condensation that comes off requires me to keep coasters around. This would be a fun way to end that problem.
>>
>>6030411
You, you're my kind of SS, and it's the thoughtfulness, including the bit of trolling.
>>
>>6030899
yeah he did

Can't wait to receive my assignment!

as well, along with some "expensive" stuff, I said I was picky and take just about anything. I wonder what whacky shit I can get.

Because Americans tend to complain the loudest if they have to send overseas.
>>
Chris B, you're in good hands!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PUMPED

Same goes for my assignment, gonna do some online shopping tonight
>>

It's because shipping prices outside the US are ridiculous and we're poor. For something incredibly small (2 oz or less), it's almost $7 without insurance or tracking and it goes up to the point where it will probably exceed the price of the actual gift.
It shouldn't be only for Americans, though. I know shipping is expensive for Australians as well and other countries.

For real. A few years back, my secret santa recipient was in Belgium and it was around $35 just to get the package there.
(I always volunteer to ship overseas anyways though since everyone deserves Christmas, dammit)

>It shouldn't be only for Americans, though.
This is definitely true, though.

So you're saying something like a small keychain costs you $7 to ship out of the country?
>>
>>6033040
Here in Canada it probably costs that much to ship domestically if you're going coast to coast.
>>
>>6033051
Nah, I sent a keychain from canada to america last year and it only cost me $1.50.
>>
Damn I have a difficult anon this year.
>>
Dan C in Toronto, I have you covered.

Any allergies, food dislikes, anything like that?

Yeah. I rarely bother selling outside the US anymore because it's just not worth the time when most people from other countries obviously aren't going to want to pay as much or even more on shipping than the actual item.
I've only sold one thing outside the US this year because it was a rare little gashapon the guy really wanted to complete the set and it was his favorite character.
I was only selling it for $5, while the shipping actually ended up being $13.80 to get to his country. I was shocked and I felt pretty bad that he had to buy it from me.
I'm not even exaggerating. Here's the calculation for a 3 oz little envelope to Italy with the cheapest shipping option. The shittiest thing is that it has to be less than 1/4 of an inch to send as a letter for only $3.33, but even a gashapon is usually going to be thicker than that.
>>
>>6033078
That's pretty bad. But it wouldn't be any cheaper if the same thing was sent from canada, our international package shipping starts at $20.
>>
>>6033062
Why is he difficult?

Alex you kiwi bastard your gonna have a fucking magical Christmas. Your wishlist might get neglected due to your genre of choice not being easily accessible here but I'm going to try my best. I already got some shit lined up for you.

>>

>>
>>6033527
Plenty of people are. I won't name drop unless I see my guy posting nervously or with a question for me.
>>
Hey Sean P. How do you feel about transformers?
>>
John B here, I hope my list did not come off as too demanding, heh.
>>
>>6033143
Difficult in the "You can get me anything" type of way. I know people say that to be nice, but I don't want to disappoint.
>>
>>6033542
Oh you might have gotten me. Did they list monster hunter plushies? I did post suggestions. Honestly, anything is fine really. You won't disappoint me. (if you did get me, if not then disregard)

>>
Matthew K I've got you senpai, thanks for giving a detailed want list. Helps a lot.
>>
>>6034469
In Calgary? Wonder if there's more than one Matt K in the pool, I got the sense my list was going to be unhelpfully vague
>>
I got Doogie Boogie, man of good taste, bitch I fucking got you man. Hope you do the same. Sorry if my list is gay retard expensive stuff choose the cheaper ones I'm an idiot.
>>
>>6034648
If you're Justin from LA I got you covered too man. I'm Doogie. Your list was great and seeing as its all on amazon I can go through and find out which ones are getting good deals. I don't know if Santa asked you if you have food allergies. Not to spoil you but I always include a bunch of candy with my SS. If you can't eat chocolate or nuts I won't put any of those inside. Or if there is a type of candy you hate I'll avoid it.
>>
>>6034667
nah I'm not Justin
>>
>>6034678
Aw dang then are assignments are mixed up then. I hope whoever has you doesn't a really good job!
>>
