For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

SD Group Build

Rules:
Pick up an SD anything, plane, Gundam/other MS, whatever, if it's generally an SD it counts (so I hope to see someone do a D-Style). Obviously, per all group builds, you'll want to paint it.

Submissions:
Email it to [email protected]
USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL ADDRESS

Due Date: November 1st

Good news! A kind anon has purchased some prizes for the group build. He has decided to do a random drawing rather than judge them like I did in the previous group build. Winners will be contacted via email.

For those curious, I intend to start the secret Santa signups on October 1st.

Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

Got myself a Zeta plus today, always liked the look of Zetas, especially the handsome face.
Too bad the articulation is somewhat hindered by the side skirtguns, meaning the arms can not stay straight downwards.
But nonetheless it is a nice kit.

Hazel Custom with the arms, backpack, and head of the GM Cardigan. I haven't 100% decided what I'm doing with the backpack yet though.
>>
>>5971558
Always a fan of the Alex style wrist guns. Shoulder beam racks look a bit out of place though, but that might just be me. Seems like it might need something appropriately armored and bulky.
>>
>>5971553
The black and dark navy/grey are pretty similar so it ends up looking like a single block of colour.

Maybe try a third accent colour to break up some of the blocks a bit, or even just adjust the tones of the colours so they are a bit easier to tell apart.

That said, points for the Hazel legs.
>>
>>5971566
I'm entertaining the idea of mounting the beam racks on the side skirts and putting something like GM III missile pods up there. That being said, the backpack is going to be pretty bulky as is with the beam rifles and shields attached.
>>
>>5971620
You have some seriously good tastes Anon. GM III pods are stellar.

Just finished this guy's leg, and it took me over two hours. Real Grades really are a big step up; I'm enjoying the hell out of this one though.
Can anyone recommend me another really choice RG (besides the shinanju)? I'm not sure if I'm ready to move onto my MGs after this.

Also, unrelated question, for someone who just got into this last month, have I spent/collected too much? I've built 5 HGs, and I have 2 MGs, another HG, and this RG unfinished. I'm curious how quickly you guys built up your collections.
>>

Not a Wing fan, but Heavyarms is always so damn practical. No laser swords, no Newtype space psychics or gimmicks - just enough firepower to take out colonies.
>>
>>5971872
Just go with the pose that always works for heavy arms, All weapons out and aiming.

>>
>>5972289
The RX-78 and Zaku II bundled in there are ancient as fuck kits. They have been thoroughly outclassed by the recent Revive RX-78 and Origin Zaku II. The only reason to even potentially want them is to have the Zaku in RX-78 colors, which is kinda neat but can easily be accomplished by repainting a (better) Zaku kit yourself. Basically, not worth it. The kit scale graphic on the back of the Vita is kinda neat I guess, but that plus two ancient kits isn't worth it in my opinion. I would only get this pack if it barely costs any more than a standard Vita.
>>
>>5972257
I humbly apologize. I am still very early UC in the Gundam series, so I was mistaken. I'll give myself a thorough scourging just to make sure it does not happen again.

Anyone ever buy from Amazon jp? I'm having a hard time finding shipping and I'm curious if my US Prime account is compatible and would make shipping here free. The kits are around 10 dollars cheaper so I'd say it's worth looking into.
Mk. III for 30 dollars is gay but for 22 I'd pick that shit up.
>>
>>5971825
Zgok.
>>
Is the Gouf Revive a good kit? Does it have a lot of stickers? I'm not too fond of stickers.
>>
>>5972719
No, your account is not compatible. And Amazon.jp won't ship anything except books and CDs to the US anyway, so you'd need to use a middleman, which would make it hideously expensive.

Besides, you're being pretty ungrateful about this whole thing. Original retail on the Mk.III is 2800 yen AFTER the standard HLJ/Amiami discount, and that's not even figuring in shipping from Japan which would start at like $10 MINIMUM for SAL on this kit, so being able to snag it for $32 with free Prime shipping is a godsend. FOH with your "eh, I'd want it at $22."

>>5972725
Yes! It's a fantastic kit. As I recall, it only had one sticker, for the monoeye. I would definitely recommend purchasing it, it was a joy to put together and pose.
>>
>>5972304
The inner frame parts have this faint natural gunmetal luster to them, but you have to look incredibly close to see it.
>>
>>5972744
I figured it would be too good to be true. Oh well. At some point I need to sit down and calculate if it's cheaper to buy on Amazon with the markup or HLJ with the shipping cost.
>>
>>5972725
Yes, it's great.
>>
>>5972746
Dude. Re-read my post.

On HLJ and Amiami, the kit costs 2800 yen, which at the current exchange rate is pretty much $28. SAL shipping on the kit (cheapest and slowest) starts at $11. That's a grand total of $39, and you need to wait 2-6 weeks for it to arrive.

On Amazon, the kit costs $32, and since you have Prime, you'll get it in two days with free shipping.

$32 vs. $39. It's a no-brainer. Buy it on Amazon. And for god's fucking sake, try to gain a realistic sense of what kits cost before running your mouth.
>>
>>5972754
It always amazes me that people complain about Gunpla costs, but then I guess coming from a traditional Military scale background is pretty humbling. $50 is average for a tank and I paid $70 for Italian armor (which is basically a P-Bandai product since nobody likes Italy)

>>

You forgot to sharpen the V-fins.
>>
>>5972768
Like the previous anon said, cut those safety nubs off the v-fin to get a nice sharp point. Unless you like the look of em I guess.

The stickers are peeling up everywhere--shoulder pads, feet, knees. Use a toothpick to really press them down into the corners and smooth them down.

I se a few nubs, but nothing too flaring. Not a bad first build anon. Could use some panel lining, but that's a matter of preference too.

Here's the problem I was talking about. Since the four-claw hands weren't part of the pre-assembled inner frame, the joints are really delicate. I put these on backwards accidentally, and popping them off to flip them around made them incredibly loose.
They fall down immediately and it's completely impossible to pose them properly with the claws on. Are there any suggestions you guys have for fixing this kind of thing, or do I just wait until Bluefin finally starts accepting replacement orders again?
>>
>>5972818
I'm pretty sure the trick to loose joints is Tamiya Extra thin cement. You put a little on the joint and I assume you move the part every few minutes as the cement dries. It'll fuse the part a little bit into the joint, but as long as you keep the part moving you should retain full range of motion with a much tighter socket.
>>
>>5972823
Normally I'd be wary of using cement on joints, but these pieces are already basically worthless in the state they're in. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind if I ever end up getting cement for a project.
>>
>>5972823
Alright I think I'm mis-informed. A quick google suggests you just put the cement on the part that plugs into the joint and let it dry, then slap the part in there. The cement enlargens the part and makes it fit snugger.
>>
>>5972830
While I think I was wrong about actually fusing the parts together with cement, Tamiya Extra-thin is so low power that you could actually put it in a joint and as long as you didn't let it harden undisturbed you'd still be able to move the joint.

>>
>>5972823
>>5972830
>>5972831
>>5972832
Or you could just buy some Pledge Floor Polish, which does the exact same thing with no fuss, no whitened glue residue, and zero risk. Just slop it onto the joint, snap it back together, and wait for it to dry. No need to move it back and forth either. Plus it's removable with water if you ever regret it for some reason.

This is accurate and the reason why buying those cat beds is a waste of money.

>Buy little cat bed.
>Cat sleeps on the floor next to the bed.
>Have a nice comforter on bed.
>Cat will only sleep on the uncovered parts just out of reach of you hand.
>Have plenty of cushioned chairs and a couch with a blanket on it.
>Cat prefers to sit on the hard bathroom counter and watch you poop from 1 foot away.

True feral cats are complete wild cards. They can be quite nasty or indifferent. Sometimes you get one that decided being nice to people means offerings of food every time they grace the measly humans with their magnificent presence and they are som of the bro-est of cats that you can get.

The ones you really want to watch out for, are bottle fed cats. As in ones who were raised on bottles rather then from mother cat, something about the breast feeding process gives some ability to properly form bonds that bottle Feds just lack. They can be quite nuts.

Of course there are always exceptions to the rule. And I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out breeds factored into it as well.

acceptable, but it might even be funnier to see the original finishes especially if people had to hand paint the matte colors
>>
>>5975198
But matte colors is easier to handbrush than gloss ones.

Axe is coming along pretty well, just using surfacer with a big brush to make sure I don't get the taper of the blade off. The epoxy putty near the point is being weird, I may need to reform it with more of one compound in it. Also playing around with designs for the spike side but haven't landed on a final direction yet.

So I fucked up the gunmetal paint on my gp02a's shoulder joint, but after scraping off the paint from the main panels, I kind of like the silver lining look. Think I may keep with it for the joints
>>
>>5975268
How do you plan on painting the edge?
>>
>>5975323

I'm not sure yet, I've been thinking about it because there are so many different versions of the heat hawk weapon design, some are orange, some yellow etc
>>
>>5975268
The spike end meaning the blunt edge on the left? I think it looks good as it, honestly. Looks like a properly scaled up axe you'd see and I like the repurposing of the power cable. Since it's a giant robot though, maybe do something the body of the axe, like putting a casing over the extension you made over the top to separate the front and rear of the axe to fit the scifi look better.
>>
>>5975325
I'd have to say I'm a fan of the glowing orange/yellow mix. Not sure how you'd go about getting that ideal glow in paint, though.
>>
Took a long break from building gunpla, what are these Reborn/100 kits? 1/100 kits that aren't Master Grade level?

Also which RG is the best? I'm leaning towards Z'gok but would like to know if any of the others are generally better
>>
>>5975353
basicly 1/100 scale high grade
>>
I got some campaign parts with a couple kits I ordered online and I don't really need or want the one in the pic. Does anyone want it? Just pay shipping (whatevers cheapest). I'm new to gunpla so if these are super common and this is totally unneccessary let me know and I'll delete this post.
>>
>>5975353
Both of the Mk. IIs are great, I have the Titans colors and he's rock solid.

>just enough firepower to take out colonies

lol, it couldnt even take down a squad of Serpents and needed help from Duo and a Leo.

Only competent Gundam in that series was the Altron.
>>
>>5975454
The Altron was hardly competent. Its dragon fangs weren't even infinite like the EW version and the beam cannon tail had limited range and it was almost never used.

The Wing Zero was the only balanced Gundam with a beam saber strong enough to duel the Epyon and rifles that could be used in beam spam mode or colony laser mode. Not to mention it's crazy mobile and second only to the DSH.
>>
>>5975463
DSH?
>>
>>5975463

If we're talking raw competency, Duo is the only good one out of the lot because he retired and got a girlfriend instead of being consumed by war.

Welp. Heres my first finished MG. Only thing left to do is topcoat but its too cold outside.

First time doing dry transfers as well and some of them I fucked up but not too badly. I wish the decal on the shield was a dry transfer though.

Maybe now that I'm finished ill finally pose my other models and possibly set up a photobooth.

>>

>>5975189
Shit, I love these kinds of gimmicky contests. It'd probably be the first group build I do. The best part, since most people don't expect good handpainting, everyone can just enjoy how bad theirs are with each other while still being able to praise and recognize the good ones. Like finally being able to share your own Red Cliff without the shame.
>>
>>5975530
>>5975532
Using Vallejo instead of testors would defeat the point of the contest, which would have been to make something good using sub-par products.
>>
>>5975534

yeah the problem is last time I suggested it everyone wanted to figure out ways to make it more serious and it got all fucked up

>>vallejo is too good

If this is the case what the fuck am I doing airbrushing vallejo and getting salty over the ever-cooling and humidifying weather, when I can just handbrush it on as well as my reapers.

tl;dr I found very good matchups for anime color red/blue/yellow on gunpla the other week in the Reaper palette.
>>
>>5975538
If I tried to get them Testors paints from elsewhere it would take over a month to arrive.
>>
>>5975662
But dude, rules of color temperature. Yellow is actually an indicator of a hotter temperature, and red is the coolest on the spectrum.
>>
Are there actually people who denub with x-acto knifes or are they just madmen who live on the edge?
>>
>>5975691
I am literally denubbing with an X-acto knife as we speak
Why, what do you denub with you fucking living meme.
>>
>>5975662
KuboTEN. They're an Asian auction site that has gunpla parts replacement ordering service if you don't live in Japan. I've worked with them multiple times when I've hamhanded a kit.

https://www.kuboten.com
>>
>>5975655

Looking at it more, I think it might be salvageable.

If I can get the foot itself apart without fucking breaking the damn thing, I can probably just drill some holes with the 'ol pin vise and wire the polycap back into the slot.

Maybe. If not, I'll have to hunt for different feet.
>>
>>5975692
Sandpaper. Knife just seems way too risky. If you accidentally cut at a small or slight angle your piece is fucked.
>>
>>5975698
Ah, you're just one of those people who lacks the fine motor skills to shave with a knife. It's okay man, there's nothing wrong with needing sandpaper.
Just don't talk shit about knife master race.
>>
>>5975694
Waaaaait a second. Couldn't these guys also be used for FAG faceplate orders? They're a bit pricy but it seems doable.
>>
>>5973113
>>5973355
If it's not gonna look like this anyway, what's the point? Why wouldnt we just buy the cheaper normal Eva 01 and repaint it?

Also, d'you think this will be cast in that slightly metallic plastic they use on Zoids and Armored Core kits?
>>
>>5975708
Don't see why not. You just need the kit R code and a copy of the pricing list on the first page of the assembly manual
>>
>>5973113
Is titanium finish the way you get that weird maroonish metallic color?
>>
So if I use Reaper's HD line of paints, just how "too good" would it be for handpainting gunpla?
>>
>>5975726

what are you talking about, I said vallejo was "too good" for a shitty kit contest not some fucking insane endorsement
>>
>>5975523
Thanks mate
>>5975560
Yea its 1/100. It's the only one that scale i have too. The other kits i have are all 1/144 rgs or hgs so it towers above them. What's really the bigger deal is it is much heavier too, like more than 3 times as heavy it feels like.
>>
>>5975698
You're not hacking away at the nub with the knife. You whittle it down slowly so that you don't damage the piece. Of course, you'll probably still need some sand paper, but this way you don't use as much of it
>>
>>5975740
I slide the flat of my blade across the remainder of a nub in lieu of sandpaper. Works just as well, and more precisely eliminates any of those white stress points from snipping a nub too close
>>
>>5975744
What blade are you using? I've got Xactos #11 and #17, but they both suck shit at cleaving thicker nubs and caused stress marks instead, so I stopped using them.
>>
>>5975748

you might not be great im afraid
>>
>>5975748
Not him, but for thicker nubs, I slice off small parts at angles to reduce stress and such. I prefer leaving sanding to the end, to get a better finish and ensure the area is flush.
>>
>>5975748
I used 11 without issue for every kit ive built. However i have been experimenting with #10 and it works well when i dont need a fine point.

Try cutting further down on the #11 when you can use a bit more force.
>>
>>5975748
11s are shit.

The Tamiya/Olfa hobby knife blades are good, but they seem to last only a couple hundred slices, and then they get dull as fuck.

I personally prefer the Nine Sea blades, they at least last longer than the Olfas.
>>
>>5975748

if your worried about stress marks dont use 11s and get a god hand

otherwise, get good and paint

>>
>>5975811
it's not trickery, you've just discovered the patron saint of /wip/ on /tg/, duncan rhodes. it's not super uncommon to paint gundam sized stuff by hand when nothing moves and it's warhammer
>>
>>5975811
The only thing that's "mad" about handpainting it is the fact that the main colour is white. Other than that, patients and a dose of get gud will net you presentable results
>>
>>5975822
>when nothing moves

The difference between that and handpainting subassemblies?
>>
well, I can't afford it but looks like koto's rereleasing the white glint + vob.
>>
>>5975837
when you put things together in subassemblies you may end up scratching paint or something forcing things together, or something else could go wrong. warhammer also has a lot less large flat surfaces, making it easier to paint.
>>
>>5975768

not him but I also prefer olfa hobby blades for plastic, but I still use 11s for decals etc where you really need fine control
>>
>>5975857
Oh that parts fitting thing? That's the same thing in airbrushing the parts anyway, so might as well sand them down or mask it away.
>>
>>5975811
Fuck, these videos are comfy. I don't even like Warhammer but I want to watch all these painting videos and then do some hand painting myself.
>>
>>5975937
Hope you have a bottle of acrylic retarder, matte medium and a wet palette to encourage self-leveling.

According to /tg/, Duncan's voice is very soothing to them.

I saw a Type-2 Taitei for $9 and I was thinking of getting it as handbrushing practice. Or not, maybe practicing handpainting on Mobile Workers might be a good start?
