Post your custom projects here; mods, fixes, repaints, dios, effects parts, accessories, 3D printed stuff, or whatever else you're working on.

Offer tips and advice, ask for help, post tutorials/guides, and have fun!
>>
Here's some tips from the previous threads:

Beginners: practice on cheap figures first.

For sculpting on figures: use 2-part epoxy putty like Aves apoxie or fixit.

For tools: try a basic carving/sculpting set like the kind arts & crafts stores have, and calipers for symmetry.
Dental tools have also been said to work well.
Also, using a Dremel is recommended. Minimites (the small $20-25 ones) are fine for starting out, but the battery life is poor. Upgrade to a corded one only if you want to get deeper into customizing. They are useful for stuff outside of the hobby though, so it's a good investment regardless.

For paints: use acrylics. Paint in multiple, thin coats. Brands like Vallejo/P3/Citadel are recommended, because of pigment quality.

Use a sealer when finished to protect your work. There are matte varieties and sealers that give a glossy look. As with painting, use multiple thin coats.

A flex shaft attachment on a Dremel is a godsend and relatively inexpensive. The grinding shield is also pretty useful, but you can improvise one using a cut open soda bottle.

For figures that small, Revoltech and Hobby Base joints will be kinda big but are suitable for major areas of articulation with enough mass (knees, shoulders, hips, etc). Narrower areas like wrists, elbows, and ankles are another thing. I do have some 5mm ball joints that I was going to put up on my Shapeways store today, if you're interested. They're ball-and-socket joints that attached have a joint diameter of 4.9mm, just a hair bigger than figma wrists but work for small figure joints for narrow parts. Mind you, you'll need to drill out 2mm or 5/64" holes to attach the joints' pegs.

Look up 'The God Fodder' on Shapeways today. Should be ready by 12pm EST.

If that's from Acid Rain, they'll probably make the figure in 1:18.

I'm not sure of the quality of bodies between the Boss Fight blanks vs. a Marvel Universe figure. I only have Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Alpha Flight and I don't really like the plastic compared to a GI Joe.

I'd like to try a BFS blank and use epoxy to fill out the details. But if you want to Frankenstein a figure the first POC Baroness figure might be cheap. And the Paris Pusruit one has similar texture on the torso. Her left lower leg could be from a ninja with wrapping around the calf, and a boot from another figure. The Renegades Scarlett has a similar crossbow and the ninjas come with a quiver of arrows. Not sure what to do for the head, Agent Helix has short hair, there's probably a Star Wars figure that has a similar mask(Grievous' Bodyguard?).
>>
>>5968572
I like the grevious guard idea to make a mask. I found a black series ahsoka, im going to use her. The tendrils she has sticking up can be carved into the ears then texture and paint the hair. And then obviously a lot of work on the body

Hey, maybe you guys can help me out.

I found a Leoblaze in a box at the back of my closet and thought it would be nice to clean up and put on my desk. Problem is, all the fucking polycaps that hold it together are deteriorating and the little bastard just will not stay assembled. I'm pretty sure I can rig something up to fix the limbs, but the cubes that make up the actual body are fucked.

Can you guys suggest anything that could be used as a replacement torso? Any kind of robotic animal body or just a robot body in general, about three inches long or so. I'm completely at a loss, here.
>>
>>5970432
You can buy replacement polycaps, usually sold by Wave or Kotobukiya.

Slice out the old ones and pry them out, then heat up the pegs of the new ones and slip them in. You might have to trim the pegs a bit with a knife if the won't go in. Hopefully it won't happen like that.

Not bad at all anon. i think you got a decent representative of Kratos with what you worked with. I saw these anniversary figures at toysrus yesterday and realized the buck was perfect for a project I had in mind, but I don't want to take away a toy some fan might really want, so does anyone know if the buck was ever used on a figure in the past that would be more disposable?

Does anyone know of any good freelance toy customisers in the EU?

I'm currently trying to put together my first custom Nendoroid and it requires a little bit of sanding and repainting. I reckon it might be a once-off thing, and as a n00b my chances of fucking it up are pretty high. So I might be better off considering a craftsperson who knows what they're doing…

Could anyone help?
I'm trying to figure out a way that I can get either a replica hand (I don't have the skill for that), or a matching pair of hands that will either fit on the ball joint-- or inside of the peg clip.

The problem is that I do not know any figures or kits that would have hands or claw hands that would fit the same, somewhat large aesthetic.

Any suggestions?

Question for you fine bois. How difficult would it be to take something with underwhelming articulation, such as a Queen's Blade Revoltech, and something with excellent articulation like one of the new figma Archetype She bodies, and mash them into a decent-looking chimera of titties, crotches, and no shitty Revoltech joints?

Midterms have finally hit in toy design and we've picked our final directions. Working on a line of non-rectilinear building toys. Each set is based on an animal, but all the parts can be completely rearranged. All sets can be used together.
>>
>>5980156
That looks really cool. What other animals do you have planned?
>>
>>5980156

>>
>>5963582

>>
>>5980255
Different anon here, in my college we always have to make physical models too, specially for the final presentations.
>>
>>5980156
What's your age range? Because those joints seem to be a point worth concern if they're their own piece like on figmas.

A much more child-safe option would be to have the joints rivioted onto the limbs so they can still swivle, but not easily detached.
>>
>>5981481
8-14, maybe slightly older. It's intended to be a midling between Lego and Tinkertoy and the finished model is quite a bit larger than it looks. The professors who've reviewed it so far cleared the parts for the age range.

>>5980255
We have to have physical models. Because the changes between midterm and final aren't super huge I wanted to make sure I had the parts CADed out to save time on the other sets.

>>5980251
So far I have a monkey and a rabbit ready for modeling. I feel like I need five total to make it a decent line and have enough pieces to build really.
>>
>>5980156

I had a hard time carving up a figure's parts, to reproportion and give me wiggle room for resculpting. Turns out it was molded in ABS plastic all along.

What are my options for carving it up besides taking a dremel to everything? Do I:

...make a block of styrene with an underlying wire armature, and make duplicate parts? Or do I tough it out with clamps, and take out chunks with a saw? What if I remove bulk material by drilling away at sections (pilot holes, etc otherwise) and then clean it up with a blade? Maybe there's a method I haven't considered, short of duplicating in epoxy putty and re-casting a resculpt in resin?
>>
Does anyone know if you could do a candy finish/metallic finish on a vinyl toy using only brushes? The toy I'm working on can't use enamel paints on it cuz it stays sticky and the area is small enough that an airbrush isn't worth it. Obviously make sure its the matte finish one.

You could also double seal it with the gloss finish then the matte one over top that (since I've noticed gloss seals seem to hold better). I've never had to do it on my nendos or figmas though. I've only used that method on minis I've pained since they get handled a lot more.

Also, if you want some pieces or parts to stay glossy while the rest is matte like the blood i did here >>6002348 I just seal it with matte let that dry then hand paint over the areas with a clay gloss. I use Sculpey acrylic emulsion with the matte finish (its not a very matte finish...).

I won't know until I have it in-hand, unfortunately. As far as WSF requirements go it checks out fine, but the actual thing will be the final test.

I will say a few things I've learned about working with WSF:

1) Make sure walls/rods are no less than 1.12mm thick to ensure it passes Shapeways's digital inspections.

2) Sprue trees being 2mm thick or more ensures prints stay together better.

3) Clearance/allowance for a tight fit is to have holes be +0.15mm wider than pegs.

4) Socket joints are the opposite with having the socket's inside be 0.15mm smaller than the ball end. Also, socket walls need to be only 2mm-3mm thick for firm but flexible grip.

5) The lips of a ball-socket that is hinge-like in its range of articulation needs to have the top of the lips narrow inward, and the two side ends widened and filleted to allow the lips to flex open when inserting the call end.

>>
Oh, cool one of these threads. Guess I'll throw my hat in the ring and share my custom I'm working on.

I'm doing my first custom of Batman Beyond. I think I may repaint it all because I used this shitty Krylon Black Satin paint and it just looks awful. The body used is an S.H.Figuarts Body-Kun in pale black and the head is from DC Icons Last Rites Batman.

I'm having trouble figuring out what I want to make the belt out of. I have little pouches that i was thinking of painting silver, but that doesn't look right. Then I'm fucked in terms of his belt buckle because aside from sawing a bead in half or something I cannot for the life of me think of where I can get a proper ring that size to fit on my figure. Then there's the issue with the chest symbol which I think I may try to do by that weird print out method.
>>
>>6020356
Huh, that's actually a good base to swap some of his parts with to get basic head/arms. Good thinking anon.
>>
>>6020416
>I'm having trouble figuring out what I want to make the belt out of.
Take a strip of plastic, cut rectangles of equal size, paint silver, glue on. Although I suppose it would be possible to do the same from an aluminum can.

For the buckle, I don't know if a hardware store would have a washer or some sort of ring that small. An art store might have a small ring, finding, or bead landing that you can use.

http://www.michaels.com/bead-landing-jump-rings-4-millimeter/M10185325.html

>sawing a bead in half
Sand it in half. You could also cut out a circle and sand to proper diameter, then dremel the center.

>>
File: toy joint.jpg (47KB, 333x370px) Image search: [Google]
toy joint.jpg
47KB, 333x370px
>>6026772
Short answer:
Yes.

Full-answer:
Yes, but it is not always easy. Statues in static, standing poses are the easiest to cut up properly, but even then that's assuming there aren't big parts of the sculpt like baggy sleeves or a skirt that would make things difficult still.

It also depends on the size of the statue and the joints being implemented. Hobby Base slim joints can mimic the old-style Figma layout of joints rather well, and but still have limits with lack of sockets. Hobby Base Sphere joints and Revoltech joints don't need sockets and can use Y-hips to attach legs instead of needing ball-sockets.

The real trick in turning a statue into a decent-looking articulated figure is applying the cuts at the right angles and carving out a sufficient amount of plastic to insert the joint neatly. It takes practice, so try your hand at it with cheap dollar store figures of many types. Try static-posed figures with stiff, straight limbs and then move your way up to figures with dynamic, bent limbs.
>>
>>6027277
joint design as well depends on whether you prioritize sculpt or posability.
Its very easy to cut ala revoltech but be careful about joints blending in. color really helps with this

I absolutely love this guy and I couldn't stand the fact that we still don't have a decent figure based on his modern version. Each image's description goes into the features and process of how I put together the figure. I won't lie in saying that this was a labor of love.

Admittedly while it's mostly done, I'm currently in the process of creating effect parts to simulate Manta's heat ray (which may or may not turn out successfully). Still the core figure is done and I thought I'd share it here first.

Help! Bought an Energon Omega supreme. Head master ball peg snapped right off. There were no stress marks, it just failed when I was rotating it to transform for head mode.

Trying to pin it but no glues including plastic cement because of the small contact area. 24 hours of drying and it popped off with the pin still in the shoulder.

Anyone got experience fixing this small a part or replacing a ball joint?

Get a balljoint with an axel on it. Dig a hole in the shoulder that would fit the peg it in nicely. You could do the metal rod trick if its a tight joint but gluing it in with cement should be fine.

I should be getting a 3D printer for the dorm in on Saturday. The original sprue is a little large for the buildplate but I can break it up into smaller sprues to print. If it's successful on my printer I may just release the smaller sprues as a set for something like $5/download so others can tinker with it. Best case scenario it prints well and we can start a collection of kits for custom parts, like clothes and hair and faceplates. Now that I have solidworks at home I'll also be working on making modifications for a female body, though with the stubby proportions it won't be major changes.

Looks good except for one thing about the joints (and maybe I'm just missing it):

Figma/Hobby Base ball joints are comprised of three pieces (2 peg-ends that connect through the hinge, and a small center piece that holds them together), but I only see the two hinged parts and a few hemisphere pieces. Are the small hemisphere pieces the center parts holding some of the joints together? Are you having some joints held together by body parts to act as ball-hinges?

Because the project originally had a five-week time limit and a grade attached I based the joint structure on Figma. The joints are two parts for the most part, with the exception of the hip system.
>>
>>6036380
Hm...I think you might have issues with the joints staying together then. Or I could be totally wrong and you had nothing to worry about. Not trying to be an ass there, just a concern from one designer to another..
>>
>>6036380
The pegs are sized to plug into the limbs, and there is enough overlap of the sockets over the joints themselves that the joint halves can't be separated unless they're pulled out of the sockets. You have any Figma? They're designed so you can swap out parts fairly easily while allowing a good range of motion.

Yep, most schools handle it as an upper level branch of the Product or Industrial Design major, though FIT handles it as upper level graphic design. I'd start practicing industrial design sketching now, that and two/three point perspective sketching cuz those are the first classes you'll have to pass to get to toy design. For 3D modeling you'll probably need to learn Rhino, Alias, and Solidworks (Rhino for quick ideation, Alias for surfacing, and Solidworks for ease of production and constraints). Photoshop, Illustrator, and Sketchbook Pro, physical model making, basic engineering are all important. It's a lot of work but don't get disheartened.

So I finally went to my local Hobbytown USA the other day. Neat stuff there, finally bought some styrene at a store.

I want to repaint this one Transformer and Hobbytown was selling just the right colors I need as Tamiya sprays. Problem is, I'm not sure where to get brush-based paint of the same color for detailing. Should I just mask the shit out of parts and spray them or what?

If it helps, I'm trying to paint a Titans Return Blurr to look more like the Takara Legends version
>>
>>6040140
What clay is that? How sturdy/flexible is it compared to the PVC Figmas (and other toys) are made from?

For a mold, try making it multi-part and powder the insides with talcum powder (baby powder) so the clay can be easily popped out.

Its branded as Yenji clay. I found out about them a few years ago in Mayalsia, its originally a Singaporean company but they have a shop in the publika shopping centre. Talcum power huh? Thats not a bad idea. Oh also the stuff shrinks, you can see it looks small inside the helmet as I stuffed it full of the stuff, thank god its a two part helmet and can come in half it made it really easy to do. When making a part it would be best to make it a tad larger or something. I did copy a C Battery a few years ago as well as make a whole arm for a vinyl highbreed from the ben10 hyper series line, I will post pics later. Oh, for durability, if left wet for a while it will get soft Im sure it could be coated in a spray or brush on sealant to keep it water prooft, I tested with regular warhammer brand paint sprays and it sticks on just as well as it does on their miniuatures. It can be dremmeled and cut like sculpey too. I havent tested the tolerances yet but I can say that it does depend on how clean it cures, I havent made too many parts in molds. The high breeds arm was just freely smudged in and left to dry. The surface isnt as smooth as it did from a mold made part such as the battery and I didnt want to test the breakage if pulled out of the torso. Its also work safe so it doesn't matter if you make a sticky mess with it on your hands ie getting it ready for the mold. This material sounds strange but I have hopes this stuff can be used to make stuff, I have a few ideas. Hopefully I can achive them some day. Also google around, a lot of work made with the material exists but its mostly childrens works or statues. shouldve taken one of their courses when I lived there.

You're going to have a lot of rebuilding to do no matter what. The head and shoulders are one piece, so it would almost be more worth your while to just cut off the distinctive elements (goggles, gold pieces) and attach those to a new head that's got a fabric or thin rubber sheath over it, then shave down the shoulders and attach the new head. Otherwise, you're going to be looking at something with massive gaps at any position.

The plastic they use is similar to resin (correct me here, others). I found that it was incredibly hard and when drilled into turned into a fine powder. I added Revoltech joints to my Talon's ankles, and even that was kind of a pain.

If you need a Talon, this would be the way to go. I have no connections to the character and only bought it because it was a DCC figure for $9 at Ross and figured it'd be good joint editing practice. The end-game was to get the Jae Lee Catwoman or Capullo Batgirl and add or edit joints on those, but I lost interest.

Also, when I was drilling the first time around, I had way too large of a bit and had to fill the holes back in with epoxy, then drill and cut a second time. That's why you can see a little shine. Like I said: practice.

I think polymer clay is alright if you're just starting out, since it's cheaper than apoxy and you don't have to worry about working times. Pro-tip; you don't have to sculpt everything in one go. You can bake it multiple times so long as you don't burn it. Also, don't use spray paints/sealers on your finished piece, they won't dry and will leave a sticky residue on your piece.

>But, you can just spray the paint into a small cup and use a brush from there.
Oh neat, wasn't totally sure if I'd be able to do that. I think I'll mainly go with sprays, though. Most parts are a single color so I can probably get away with it.

Do I need to do anything to ensure the spray paint doesn't go on too thick?
>>
>>6048305
>ensure the spray paint doesn't go on too thick?
Spray paint is thinner than bottled paint. Is it too thin or not thin enough? You'll need to test that out for yourself on a test piece.

Make sure the paint is dry before adding another layer.

You could try cutting out clear plastic from the window of some figure box and fashioning it into a bubble, or maybe you could try using a capsule from a gumball machine as a base?

The Archetype Next's have more realistic (albeit idealized) sculpts, plus better articulation.

Sorry for the absense, been working on holiday orders and finals. Pic related, it's a slightly out of date render of my Toy1 final. My actual physical models are rougher because I had 5 days to make them piece by piece from scratch lol

there is a tool i am looking for, don't know if it exists

thinking of a lathe mixed with a vise. I can clamp in a piece of plastic or whatever material, and hand crank the vise in place, allowing me to work on the plastic, either wraping something around it while it stays in plase with the vise, or painting/sculpting around it while it turns

does this tool exist?

I've searched lathes, manual hand crank tools, swivel vises, the fucking coiling gizmo for making wire coils. I can't find what im looking for and i feel like im having a stroke

Basically yes. a potters wheel with a vise glued on it, something I can turn with a hand crank.
Seems like im gonna have to make it myself.

Thank you! Aparently it made the Winter Show so all the models and poster must be done tomorrow. It's a lot of work in a short amount of time.
