post anything DC Comics related here! bats to jokes, aliens to mytzptylks!

Got this guy for $28 at Hastings (R.I.P) yesterday, and I love his posing ability, though I REALLY wish they had a softer cape, or a battle worn mode for this one where it is stripped down and looks half torn off (bonus if it would reveal a small batarang broken off inside it)

Could be.

In the case of MAFEX, I don't know. I have DKR Catwoman and, aside from not having any weapons (a whip would've been nice), she was worth every cent. I'd think if any line had build problems, it'd be most apparent on the smaller female figures.

We'll have to see how BvS Wonder Woman turns out in November. If she turns out alright, it'll lend more weight to the theory that MAFEX is suffering from groupthink. A few hamhands or QC slips somehow turned into an indictment of the entire line.
>>
>>5906256
Or they just want to save money, which I can't really blame them for. Why pay full price when you don't have to sometimes?
>>
>>5906315
GIJoe fans waited, and bragged about waiting, for every release to hit clearance. Now look where they are. No team, no retail presence, stuck with a really expensive 3rd party subscription until maybe another movie comes out.

A lousy retail environment conditioned me to buy stuff when I saw it. If I chose not to and never saw it again, I blamed myself.

But /toy/...likes to ignore even clearances because half off still isn't cheap enough and then later pitch a fit about "scalpers" and "rape prices" and companies not listening to them. It's cognitive dissonance on a massive scale.

A proper Cassandra Cain would be great.

As for Manta, while the Mattel figures were alright for their time, they can definitely use an update. Admittedly I did end up repainting mine so the helmet's colors would look sharper and his eyes a little more fierce. I also modded his trident so it resembles his traditional handheld one while turning the rest of it into a makeshift harpoon (the harpoon not pictured though).

There's not much to speak about regarding the harpoon. It's basically the trident with actual trident removed (since that's the part I used for his handheld one) while the staff part is flipped upside down since the bottom part already resembled a stylized harpoon. I may mod it to make it more distinguishable down the road but I'm okay with it for now.

Personally I've never been a fan of the idea of Black Manta using a traditional trident and it doesn't help that his major appearances rarely have him using one anyway (besides promo materials and artworks).

Beyond his knives, I generally favor his handheld trident and for a spear-like weapon, a harpoon instead. Specifically I prefer them since the former calls back to his advanced tech while the latter is a nice callback to his being a treasure hunter and sea-monger (i.e. think Manta as Ahab and Aquaman as Moby Dick). It doesn't help that the rare times he does use a trident it's when he usually steals Aquaman's trident where it's treated more as a rare occasion.
>>
>>5908527
Forgot to mention, pic-related is just the actual trident. I didn't bother taking a pic of the makeshift harpoon since it's easy enough to infer from the trident's design.

The appeal is that it was the only place to get articulated figures ofa whole bunch of DC characters.

I almost bought into it, but then i realized i'd probably just punt them one day when Mattel would lose the license and regret ever wasting my money on that crap.

>The appeal is that it was the only place to get articulated figures ofa whole bunch of DC characters.
This. It was the wide selection of characters that attracted a lot of people at the time (from old to new) and it helped that the articulation scheme looked cleaner than MLs back then (until Hasbro upped their game).

Honestly DCUC is better when you cherry-pick certain standout figures or characters you give a crap about. That's what I did and I found myself still feeling happy with the figures I own without ever feeling like I bought them all for completion's sake (pretty sure I only have around 10 figures at most).
>>
>>5908774
I've bought Joker and Harley, but I'm waiting for the whole Rebirth JLA set so I can have a decent version of Batman while having the rest of the Justice League in their modern looks.

Will probably pick up Sinestro, Deadshot, Deathstroke and I'm hoping we get Black Manta at some point as well.
>>
>>5908990
>DCUC is better when you cherry-pick certain standout figures
Except there are no stand out characters besides BAFs (and like fuck I'm going to waste money on shitty figures just to get something good).
Even fucking Harley Quinn was something i held on for my entirely of completely my shopping list at Target and then just tossing her off to the side, way back when she was new. Fucking disappointing everything.

I'm really glad Icons and Mezco's stuff exists, because they're finally giving me stuff i only dreamed about for the longest time.

>>5909014
I honestly beg to differ.

It had great figures like Ares, Etrigan and for quite some time it gave us a definitive Deathstroke. Beyond that, DCUC also offered some of the most obscure choices that no one really expected (for better or for worse). Shitty as Mattel was in their distribution, they also gave us lot of great figures of Batman/Superman villains going all the way back in the DCSH line before it turned into DCUC. We had figures like Scarecrow, Azrael, Clayface, Two-Face and a definitive Batman that was considered the most definitive 6-inch version for quite some time.

Also you speak as if the Harley Quinn figure was something worth talking about when it's generally considered to be a letdown by many collectors even at the time when DCUC was a thing.

The problem with DCUC was the fact that it was handled haphazardly by Mattel to the point of ridiculously reusing molds while painting on details that should otherwise be sculpted (essentially cost-cutting everything as the line went on).

Still, back then it offered some great figures and many even viewed them to be a general improvement over the molds/articulation scheme used by Toybiz and Hasbro's early stab at making MLs. That isn't to say that the line wasn't plagued with a lot of shitty figures (it was) but for what it was, the line managed to serve some of the best DC figures even compared to a lot of what DCD had to offer (yes the same company making the Icons line and many others with improved molds/articulation). Even till now, good as the Icons and Mezco figures look, we still get the occasional hiccups and awkward costume/sculpt choices.

Remember when they were still DC Direct and 90% of their toys had no waist, bicep, thigh and ankle articulation? Those were dark times for a DC fan. And while DCUC never reached its full potential, it was practically a godsend compared to what we had before.

No offense, but some of the sculpt and tailoring honestly looks like shit. DCUC was mediocre to bad but there's still room for improvement with the Mezco and Icons figures before they deserve being paraded around as the next best thing.

Yeah sure the DKR Batman is perfect but that's one out of many figures that haven't seen release yet and honestly, some of the spandex-wearing characters look pretty underwhelming compared to their DKR Batman.

WAT? Maybe by someone who only liked DC shit, but that's some outrageous claim you got going, especially when /toy/ was pretty fanboyish about the Toy Biz line back then

>a definitive Batman that was considered the most definitive 6-inch version for quite some time.
See, even back in the day, I still wouldn't accept this shit, considering the type of toys Toy Biz and other companies were offering. It's also why i passed on DCC's 90s quality swivel figures, especially back then when their quality of sculpt and paint wasn't all that high.
I had pretty "high expectations" where i needed toys to be as good as 80s figures like COPS and then Toy Biz's figures raised the standards super high with their MLs.
So nothing from Mattel back then was anything i would have considered definitive, not even their BAFs, which could stand for some improvements.

>DCUC never reached its full potential,
As a Mattel product, it definitely reached its full potential.

I mean that there were figures out at the time that the BAFs could take features from, instead of the typical Mattel cheapout.

In other words, other companies were doing BAFs better at the time and they should have reached for the same standards, instead of doing shit like this.

>So nothing from Mattel back then was anything i would have considered definitive, not even their BAFs, which could stand for some improvements.
Uhuh yeah that's what I thought you'd say. Thing is that's just your opinion, one that wasn't shared by a lot of people at the time wherein you even seem to be the minority here.

Also
>See, even back in the day, I still wouldn't accept this shit, considering the type of toys Toy Biz and other companies were offering
Back in the day? Other companies? Do you even remember what the fuck was going on at that time? Do you even remember what the figures were like when DC Direct were the only ones making DC figures BEFORE they got their shit together with Icons, Arkham and the BTAS line?

DC Superheroes or "DCSH" (not even DCUC) only came in at the fringe end of Toybiz's last year of handling Marvel Legends. At the time when Hasbro took over ML, DCSH molds were actually being favored by a lot of collectors given the shitty start that Hasbro had with MLs. There were so many custom boards being flooded with DC-styled customs of Marvel characters with people using DCSH/DCUC molds as a base because they actually provided for sleeker and sturdier builds than the gangly joints that some of the MLs were being subjected to (especially during the early Toybiz-Hasbro transition)

I'm not saying that DCSH/DCUC is the be all-end all of DC figures (fuck no), rather at the time when DC figures were at their lowest in terms of output (arguably even Marvel during the transition with Hasbro), DCSH and DCUC provided a glimmer of hope for any DC fan who wanted a decently-articulated figure. The most damning part about all of that was how Mattel ended up fucking up what should have been a consistently good line sculpted by the Four Horsemen because fucking up something like clockwork is just so Mattel's style.
>>
Sheesh, if DCUC figures aren't considered close to "definitive" I'm not sure if any DC figures are.

>I don't know if you were around long enough to remember but what I said was hardly an "outrageous claim".
Sure it was, because everyone laughed at what you're speaking ever since Mattel got the license. Their JL was hated, because it had 90s shit articulation and when they added more it was ugly as fuck.
The DCSH line was thought to be the savior, but most of the line up was crummy designs made for nostalgiafags. People wanted new designs, like the ML line was doing. They wanted better articulation, like the MLs.
>DCSH molds were actually being favored by a lot of collectors
Yeah, by people who wanted cheap cus-
>There were so many custom boards being flooded with DC-styled customs
LOL. And this isn't a good thing, because they wanted a BASE body. A simplistic blank body that Mattel LOVES providing, because everyone is superman cosplaying as someone else and kids don't care about shoddy retools and redecos.

>Do you even remember what the fuck was going on at that time? Do you even remember what the figures were like when DC Direct
Yeah, I remember, but that doesn't suddenly make Mattel's cheapshit to be good. It's nothing but cheap cash ins, despite the efforts from a team that cares, because the figures were always shoddy compared to MLs, McFarlane figures, Revoltechs, Mezco figures, and 4H's own line.

You can talk shit about Hasbro's efforts, because it was a HUGE disappointment in seeing the quality go down, but again, that doesn't make Mattel's effort to be anything but cheap crap.
There was never a point in time when Mattel made anything that was "definitive" because their efforts were always cheap, with a budget that made Hasbros' disappointments seem like TB MLs.

Ok, i guess their Superman was definitive for a time, because nearly every fucking figure they made was just Superman with make up or another costume painted on. I can't unsee it anymore.

Regarding Mafex Superman, I'll admit his neck problem was a pretty easy fix compared to all his other problems. Just shave off some of the plastic from the front and back of the neck sculpt using an X-acto knife since he basically has the same problem as Mafex Vader, i.e. the neck sculpt has too much excess plastic underneath.

>I popped the legs off and put some tiny pieces of zip-lic bag in the sockets.
I didn't mod his legs since I was nervous that the hip joints would break due to most breakage reports stemming from broken hip joints. Admittedly, it's good to know it's possible to fix the loose hip joints.

More than anything, it's the tailoring on he clothes that looks monumentally terrible. Not only do his clothes hug his body awkwardly, but the sleeves/pants look baggy as hell.

I'm honestly surprised they're using these as official photos to show it off. I seriously hope they do something about it because this could easily be a great-looking Joker figure with the proper cloth tailoring.

>>
>>5912052
Yeah, most of the ones with spandex/tight-fitting clothes look great but it's a shame that Joker or other similarly clothed figures don't seem to match that quality. Here's hoping they do something about it well before release.
>>
Looking at it again, the sleeves don't look so bad but pants look terribly baggy/oversized, not to mention that the whole thing looks crumpled to hell from top to bottom. I think the fabric they're using doesn't help and it would have served them better to use a finer material.

Shitty comparison, especially since those two figures were made in 2008 (8 fucking years ago) and Hot Toys has come a long way from those. Also, the Hot Toys Two-Face has been consistently shat on even by 1/6 collectors to the point that barely anyone initially bought it on release.

Also that Bank Robber Joker in your pic is the old one. See pic-related for a comparison of the old Bank Robber Joker (left) with the 2.0 version released a couple of years ago (right) and the improvements made are as blatant as night and day.

... and the second DX Ledger Joker.

Both figures have 3-4 layers of clothing on top of them. Heck I'm pretty sure the Nicholson Joker even has a "fat suit" underneath to get his proportions down. Cloth on figures can be really hard I know, but to even put Hot Toys's latest works with Mezco's showings under the same breath, the level of work aren't even comparable. And for anyone who says it's unfair to use recent Hot Toys figures, need I remind you that the Mezco figures aren't some old figures made 8 years ago.
>>
>>5912416
That's because everyone knows they're meant to homage retro stuff like Megos which is why their packaging are even done the way they are and why people only ever treat them as specialty items than anything close to being definitive figures of any characters.

The One:12 Collective by Mezco isn't presenting itself like that and works under the pretense that they're proper 1/12 figures with proper fabric clothes when needed.
>>
>>5912130
Can't believe I'm saying this but I hope they make a Jared Leto Joker so I can get that one instead.

Given how his clothes already looked baggy when he had the purple coat on, I wouldn't be surprised if they do a better job at making him look better than their own original design. Not to mention it would match better with the Batfleck I ordered.

I'm calling bullshit, because Static is set to ship this month, which means that they already produced all the figures in China 4-6 months ago and shipped them them all somewhere within that time.
If the figure was cancelled, it would have been announced before production started, back in march or april.

If it really was cancelled, it means China sent them a crate full of dog toys or the freighter sitting off the California shore got hit by a North Korean rocket.

But what's the logic behind the thought of: "Why yes, I'd love to spend my hard earned cash on a baby-doll version of this specific pop culture icon!" I truly don't get it. It's like this penguin Judge Dread statue. Why? Who's buying this? What was the incentive to make it?

Look, if you like this kind of thing. That's fine. Just explain to me the appeal of Baby-doll Ash & Gillman, because I don't see it.

Nah, it ain't my thing, but come on, you're on fucking /toy/ and you haven't seen all the stupid chibi crap weeaboos buy? Cutesy shit isn't exclusive to them.

At least with Judge Dredd, weird funny stuff like that can actually happen in the comics themselves.

What I'd like to build is a Supermen of the Multiverse collection, if I had the money.
But I have no idea how many are available.

I'm pretty sure there's a Justice Lord Superman and Red Son figure, and I'd assume there's a Flashpoint Subject 01.
And I know I'd have to mod something if I wanted Nazi Overman.

Is there a Superman Prime? Or a Superman Beyond? I know there's a Calvin Ellis, but where's my Sunshine Superman?

What would be the best base for Metropolis Superman?

Battle Suit Batman and the Batmobile, at least. Possibly the Grapple Attack Batman. I don't like the Superman redesign, but Epic Superman looks kinda neat.

Oh wow, he looks great. I'm glad that his abs are actually somewhat more visible here than previous shots led us to believe.

What is your most wanted figure? If you could only guarantee one sure fire release, what would it be?

For me, it'd be a 1/12 Batman faithfully modeled after Neal Adams Batman art from the late 60s/70s. It's my absolute favorite Batman. Not sure what line; ideally it'd have Figuarts level articulation( shoulder joints or butterfly joints are a must.. Adam's Batman was always showing off his shoulder muscles), but I'm not sure if they'd capture the western style well. It needs to be able to pull off Neal Adams poses, especially THE POSE. DC icons is getting better at imitating that articulation, but subject to QCissues. Maybe Mezco, but the muscles wouldn't show. At any rate, I really need a replacement for the DCUC1 figure
>>
>>5919163
I didn't give my opinion on the articulation either you fucking idiot, I was just pointing out that the other anon was fine with it.
What if my opinion was that I agreed with you? But you wouldn't know that would you, asshole?

he has a shit cape and butterfaces and a bit lacking in detail definition, but hey, for a superman toy, he's one of the few that you can put in almost any superman pose you want, and NOT look like someone chopped up a statue of superman.
