Monthly Building Challenges:
>Summer's almost over - make a scene with your sigfig enjoying the last days of the season!
>Bonkle is dead. Build something that uses parts specifically meant for Bionicle.
>Make a police MOC. Be sure to include some ineffectual chasing with handcuffs.
>Brickheadz are stupid. Let's revive Cubedudes! Build a Cubedude to show their superiority over Brickheadz!
>The 2016 Paralympics are on in Rio. Create a MOC or scene showing that minifigs that are broken, damaged or missing parts can still be the best!
>Create a new tribe of mixels.

In Canada, anyone know where I might still be able to grab a series 15 (orange) bag? TRU seems to have the yellow bags now.

what about Nexo Knights? are they dying too?
i was out from lego stuff from late Spring. i returned now to get some Dimensions like "gremlins" or "sonic" and may be some little Nexo sets.
I was expecting cool stuff during winter.

Actually Nexo knights are kinda weird. I do love this series a lot but for some reason its hard for me to pick something specific.
their minifigures/figure sets are awesome thought.
>>
>>5887316
not him, but i dont LIKE Nexo Knights, i dont like how all of Lego is just turning into this same sort of X + Technology thing. Ninjago and Nexo Knights are the same to me. I want traditional lego back, please

>>5887329
Chima was weird. I loved the minifigs, but I didn't care for most of the sets. Hope they reuse the minifigs for a new line in the future.
>>
>>5887354
Maybe its just my rose colored nostalgia glasses but i want more stuff like all the Aqua sets and the Arctic Base sets and stuff like that. Chima/Nexo/Ninjago all seem like there's too much meta-story attached to the sets and minifigs
>>
>>5887364
>meta-story
>bad
>>
>>5887364
I actually have to agree when it comes to the story thing. Having a basic story is great and all, like the whole premise behind Nexo Knights, but then comes the animated story and all the sets tie into specific episodes and go into way more detail than is needed. Should have just stopped with "Jestro and the book of evil are collecting magic books and the Nexo Knights must stop him and protect Knighton!" and release a bunch of sets so kids can create their own stories and adventures.
>>
>>5887392
exactly! when there is too much story connected to the sets and what-not, it makes me feel like lego is telling me how to play
>>
>>5887364
I would love something akin to Power Miners or Mars Mission, something that isn't a mishmash of sub-themes and isn't entirely plot-heavy as well.

That's how it was in the classic times, and it drove LEGO almost to oblivion (OK, so there were other reasons like 'utter shit sets' too).

Face it, nowadays kids like their toys metaplot-heavy. The only way LEGO could compete with tv and vidya was to join them, not oppose them. We old fucks are too small a market for a company like that to survive.
>>
>>5887629
Well, early Bonkle had a very clear story with games, comics and movies supporting it, and it was literally the only theme in early 2000s that sold well.

I thought it was the huge investment into franchising and expanding that almost ruined Lego, because they did it too much and too fast. I also recall that the theme parks and brick-and-mortar stores also took a lot of their steam in the early 2000's.

I also blame Life on Mars. No kid wants aliens that are friendly. Fuck them xenos.

>'utter shit sets'
You know, as a kid, I have to say I never really noticed a decline in their quality. Granted, my peak of Lego indulgence was during the mid-to-late 90s, but I still got a few sets in the so-called "crisis" period, and I thought many of them were fine. I honestly didn't know that Lego output of the time was considered to be of a lower quality until I read the articles.

>>5887854
This seems more like the actual reason. Lego started to spend resources on things they thought would help them expand, but ultimately neglected their core appeal.
>>
>>5887898
>>5887629
What kind of sets were being released during the crisis period, anyways?
>>
>>5887898
>This seems more like the actual reason. Lego started to spend resources on things they thought would help them expand, but ultimately neglected their core appeal

And this is slowly happening once more. Yeah Lego is more popular than ever. But growing quality problem and price vs what you get, remakes, crappy sets that are only considered "good" because figures... I am not happy myself.
>>
>>5887901
Lego made many very expensive sets that were sold very cheaply for what they had inside. Mainly electronic sets.
>>
>>5887866

They were friendly. They were supposed to be helping the humans with mining and discovery and... traveling around in tubes... and stuff.

>>5887872

I never said that I didn't like the sets. It's just that they could have done better. They discontinued the line only after one series, and I blame it on having no weapons. It was disinteresting. Kids love having drama and protagonist vs. antagonist themes and Life On Mars didn't have those. If they would have had like a villian martian, I'm sure it would have been different.
>>
>>5887901

They were expanding into franchises. Lego Star Wars, Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh, Spider-man, Dora the Explorer, and Batman... to name a few. It costs a lot of money for licensing.

Also, not-so-popular sets came out: Lego Racers, Life On Mars, lots of gimmick sets and junk merchandise that amounted to nothing.

But this also was a Renaissance era for Lego as far as colors go. We got like 15 new colors in the crisis era.

One of the best things to come out around, I think in 2003 or 2004, was the Duplo Castle line. I wish I had a kid at that time so I could have had a reason to buy those sets.
>>
>>5887901
I mostly mean experiments like Galidor or Jack Stone. Some of the licenses turned out pretty OK (star wars, harry potter).

>>5887902
I dunno. I don't have much of a problem with the current sets, either. Their creator stuff is great, the licensed sets are great, even the core stuff like City is staying fresh despite being long out of original material to work with.

I don't think Lego will have a problem again. A lot of the issues surrounding their early 2000s crash were born from the fact that Lego just simply wasn't analyzing or restraining themselves. They had never had an issue making money in the past and just didn't care. Nobody was really watching where there money was coming from or going to. They underwent a very strict restructuring to ensure that wouldn't happen again.

>>5887903
Actually, one of the few sets I would consider "bad" from my childhood was the Alien interstellar starfighter. As I recall, it was a $100+ set, but had a ludicrously low piece count. A lot of its bulk was made of big, solid panels and slopes. It did feature a motor and fiber optics, so clearly a lot of the cost went into that.

And I say that the set was "bad" on paper, but did little 11-year-old me love it? Hell yeah, I did. Endless hours were spent helping my Lego city repel the alien invasion.
>>
>>5887920
Aw yeah Duplo castle line was great. I liked Caveman life too!
>>
>>5887924
The new sets have a big problem.
Kids can't rebuild them alone because there is too much design into them.
Yeah we love them. They work amazing as a playsets. But they started to be marketed as one use toy and are designed and promoted that way. Sure kids build a lot, but with so many pieces to learn and work with its just a big problem than fun.
>>
>>5887924

I'm fucking loving the creator sets. The non-structure sets are kinda are getting stuck on the 2-things and a jet theme, though.

>>5887925

I wish they'd make more inexpensive Duplo
train sets, like more cargo and passenger sets.
>>
>>5887924
Love this set but it was too fragile. This actualy was one of those sets that supposed to be even more expensive.

Yeah, I think Exo Force was probably the last theme with alternative models on the box.
(and good lord, some of them were cool as fuck)
>>
>>5887986
I tried to build that once.

It was fragile as shit.
>>
>>5887986

Yeah. Exo Force was the shit, but some of the sets were pretty weak, especially the antagonist's vehicles and definitely the Bridge Walker set. I have a couple of sets stored up to sell... at scalping prices.
>>
>>5887995
>>5887986
i only ever had one exo force set but i sure had fun with it
>>
I'm indifferent about Exo-Force.

But I do hate that it indirectly killed turquoise
>>
>>5888018
killed what?
>>
>>5888008

You should invest in the Blade Titan and Sky Guardian. Also, the Battle Arachnoid was fucking awesome and I shamefully (not really) bought and opened like 4 of the damned things.
>>
>>5887898
I think I went through the same time as you. But I remember seeing catalogs and sets for sale, those City sets with cars that were even simpler than before, with printed front grille and headlights. Back then I thought there was something weird going on and I had no idea TLG was going down. I never knew about Galidor or Jack Stone, but during my dark age I bought the small SW duel set with Darth Vader.

>>5887901
Not only the new themes as everyone mentioned but existing themes like City received terrible treatment, got simpler and looked bad. They made several new single-purpose pieces like full car or helicopter chassis and things like that.
>>
>>5888031
>They made several new single-purpose pieces like full car or helicopter chassis and things like that.

And this is why I'll never buy the Juniors sets. It completely ruins the Lego feel when you buy a set and can only make different versons of that exact set.
>>
>>5887902
But then again you're no longer their target. Lego never had a big market around here because it is a very expensive toy due to import taxes. It was cheaper during the 90 because we had a facility to put them in our own version of the boxes and that made import costs smaller. But now toy stores always have a full wall of sets, so it looks like they are selling very well.

The designer of the Dark Panther had the choice to make the model either orange, red, teal or purple.
If it was going to be teal then purple would've been axed, if it was going to be purple then teal would have to go and if one of the first two were chosen then both of them would've been retired.
>>
>>5888043

Wait.... they would have not used purple at all if teal was taken? Like.... no more sets with purple? That seems like a bad business move.

Purple is the best color of all.

Bizarre shit like the Explore line which killed Duplo at that time and included some baffling toddler toys that were 100% incompatible with anything.

It went so bad that at one point even the retailers literally told Lego that they have no fucking idea what they are currently doing and that by now they know their customers better than they do.

Batman was 2006, part of the modern recovery period. Spider-Man hangs right by the end of the crisis, but I guess the SM2 sets didn't sell well enough for Sont.

I wonder how much of the upwards movement near 2012 is due to Superheroes and how much of it is Ninjago.

>I also blame Life on Mars. No kid wants aliens that are friendly.
Maybe I was a weird kid, but I loved the hell out of Life on Mars precisely because it put the aliens in a positive light and had a lot of sets that focused on them. Giant alien robots are still giant alien robots even if they're being used for mining and tube transport and shit. Even as a teenager, I always hated how the original themes in the post-crisis years always had antagonist creatures that were infinitely more interesting than the heroes, but with the exception of one or two token sets per line, nearly all of the sets were some huge hero vehicle with a single monster minifig or two (and maybe a dinky vehicle if you're lucky). Hell, this shit still goes on today in themes like Ninjago and Nexo Knights.
>>
>>5887392
as an old G1 bionicle fan, I mostly disagree. I loved the background story being so huge and complex that you could never fully grasp it, and could always learn more about it. This, of course, left more than enough space for myself to imagine the parts of the story that were not told (yet). It was rather stimulating.

I do agree that having a fully explained story kind of blocks imagination, which sucks.

But I think that having a large lore is pretty cool, as long as everything is not explained or told.

to elaborate: most LEGO lines stay for three years. I assume they measured that it's an optimal amount of time before kids get bored and seek something else; after three years their sensibilities change enough to look at the line as children's toys. Also it means making place on the shelves for new lines. Kids like new.

When I was turning old (16-17) I made a massive toy clearance from my collection. I never really went into a "dark age", as I still have many toys in my room (22 now)
lots of LEGO, like Exo Force and Bonkle, I still keep in a box in my room, but don't really play with anymore, but I still love toys, and I'm looking to buy several sets soon

not on the side famalam, LEGO is still considered a kids' toys, even if you say 16+, lots of people would disapprove of a full-on war theme, and idk what could you mean by licensed themes with an adult audience target. Simpsons was adult-targeted, I think that's as far as they'll go, adults are not at all their main target, let alone adults looking for adult themes.

>>
>>5888746
well they did mecha, didn't they? But I don't think they will do non-humanoid ones without any pilots kids can relate to.
>>
>>5888730
Also, remember when they had that deal with Shell, but had to drop it after Greenpeace shat their collective pants about it? Public relations are really important for a company like this.
>>
>>5888752
Lego should make some cool playable mecha for the kiddies that come with other stuff. Adults then can use those extra pieces to alternative build the mecha into something that Lego wouldn't advertise otherwise.
>>
>>5888761
They did it. Exo-force. They are still doing mechs, for Ninjago and Nexo (not so japaneese-looking though);
>>
>>5888746
Mechas are amazing, but then again, it would be too much of a hassle for LEGO to do, starting with piece count, prices go up and they risk it not being too appealing and losing moneys, taking in account that good Mechas are too complicated for children to build so they get practically no kids audience, and AFOLS are just not a massive market, hence the scarce AFOL day we (you, AFOL day doesn't exist in my country) get
plus >>5888758 the company's image is rather important when your main source of cash are kids, or rather, parents paying for their kids' wants
>>5888761
see >>5888767
TLG is happy the way things are, and as much as we would like good pieces for MOCs, buying sets, brick tubes or Cracklinking stuff is how it will probably be forever, or until AFOLs become their main money source

>>5888767

The early 2000s were my dark age, and looking back at those sets, it looks like they did a LOT of that. I got the same vibe too, like they were telling you how to play. Lots of weird and unappealing color combinations too.

I don't watch the tv shows, so that helps. Hopefully they won't fall back into another period like that with the quality of the parts decreasing as well as too much storytelling.

I completely agree with this anon. a war theme aimed at adults would be commercial suicide. I had to write 15 pages about the communication marketing of lego, so i kinda know my shit about this topic. Firstly it would be too much of a hassle to design and produce sets for such a small audience. Secondly the companies image is extremely important for lego. For years they worked to be seen as a familyfriendly and creative company. A military theme would seriously endanger that image, which is one of the biggest reasons why they became so successfull in the last years (being one of the top ten most regarded companies in the world for six years now).
Lego has made an image as the most intelligent and socially acceptable toy. They have to do everything to keep that reputation.

Those are good amounts of the female and male singles.

The one I'd say to get the least of is the 1x2 plate with both a female and male end lengthwise. Personally I get the least use out of that piece due to its nature inherently limiting what you can actually put on it and how articulated you can keep it in tandem with this.

Question, is it common for the lekku head piece to be so tight on heads that it pops off really easy?
I've got 3 Hera whatever her name is, and only one of the lekku's sits on a head well, the other two pop off with the slightest touch.
The problem seems to be with the lekku, as it's always the same lekku that pops off, regardless which head it's on.

Is this a common problem, or am I just really unlucky?

The Billy Bookcases from Ikea are pretty good. The thing I like about them is that you can buy extra shelves and you can put the shelves as close or as far together as you'd like.

The one bad thing about them is that they're about half an inch too short from being able to fit 3 modulars on a single shelf.

Wasn't the "Lego is getting more expensive" thing bebunked? Like, the sets are cheaper but it's just that because now we have to buy them ourselves they seem expensive.
>>
>>5889432
I love this. These are amazing.
>>
>>5889773
That's true for North America and Europe, not for a country that used to have smaller import taxes for Lego in the 90s and now has to pay full abusive taxes for it.
>>
>>5889792
Not to mention that in case of licensed themes, Europe is paying the Dollar prices in Euro.
>>
>>5889796
>Dollar prices in Euro
>mfw every single $20 set is 30€ here, and the next price range is boosted up

To be fair, everything is more expensive here, but that's the most jarring thing.

It hurts me personally that Eclipse Fighter is almost 50€ here and Axl's Tower Carrier from Nexo is closer to 100€ here. At that point, I'd just rather spend 15€ more and get Fortrex.
>>
>>5889773
They are more expensive because sets are bigger.

it was worth the 8 eurobucks for everything you get

I like the metallic details on the girl's printing, but the car could be better (uses stickers, when the card doors open they hit the rearviews, the underside is a bit shoddy)

Jang recently shared his opinion on new Deathstar.
Personaly what is your opinion on that move?

I think rehasing sets like this is only sad excuse for easy money. We all would be happy for older sets. Monorail?Classic Space? Classic Castle? Right? See? You just proved my point.

I thought Lego could do better than that.

This is either literally your first time posting in the lego thread, or you're mind-numbingly ignorant. Waifigs, and bootlegs to a much lesser extent, have been reoccurring trends in these threads for years now. And every time somebody brings it up or tries to complain about nothing changes and that thread gets significantly worse because of it. No matter how much you kick and scream like an angry child they're not going away. Make like everyone else in the thread and either silently tolerate it or fuck off back to eurobricks.

The people just click on "part out this set" when they add it to their inventory and no minifig is listed with a saber automatically and the Kylo from the Takodana set is the helmetless version so the helmet is a lone part in the sets inventory.

So the moral of the story is to just get a bottleg.

Rogue One and Thrawn make me consider buying regular wave sets from Star Wars again after only buying UCS/exclusive sets.
The Hovertank is a great dirty sci-fi design, Krennics shuttle is aestheticly sound and even a TIE wins me over for once (though mostly to cannibalize into a regular TIE. Only unsatisfied with the AT-ST as it has no articulation and the U-Wing isn't that great either. Also hoped for a new AT-AT, I hope it just got pushed to next year.

I hope the Thrawn set will be nice as well, the Phantom formerly known as Separatist Shuttle could proof interesting if executed well.

The set's great looking when it's all finished, there's plenty of minifigs and a neat little gimmick with the light block

the build itself is fast and easy since it's staggered in numbered bags

I'd also like to ask if anyone in this thread has done hard mode, a la ignoring the numbered bags and dumping it all in one pile without any sorting whatsoever

Just got pic related even if I don't collect Ninjago. It is awesome !

How many other ninjas with the same type of costume do I need to have all of them ? I know there's the green one, but are there others ? All of them can be found in 2016 sets ?
>>

There's red, blue, black, white, green, sensei and female ninja.

Sorry, I just have no idea what figs that set has.
>>

If you want all possible colors there are also metallic, gold, dark red with azure accents, Chima bright orange and purple.

The first three are alternate costumes for the white, green and female one respectively, don't know who exactly orange and purple are. Should all still be available but only the purple and dark red ones are in 2016 sets, gold is in a Dimensions set.
>>
>>5892654
Orange and purple are their own characters, gold is just alternate version of green and dark red with azure is the female one

There should be 3 in every box.

5 per box
Banana Guy
Arabian Knight
Spy

4 per box
Serenader
Imp
Hiker
Rogue
Dog Show Judge
Spooky Boy

3 per box
Babysitter
Pirate
Cyborg
Ice Queen
Penguin
Kickboxer
Wildlife Photographer

Take a look at official Lego boats. Use an official boat hull if you must. It'll save you so much hassle, even if it's just a huge block of plastic. [toyspoiler]I personally dislike using huge prefab pieces when i can, but with boats, they're good in my books[/toyspoiler]

In ALL colors, I want trans purple mixel joints, green vents, an orange piket fence. I want teal slopes for upside down boats; red bones, green bones, and trans printed cell phones. Also, Jang is indirectly sponsored by Lego. He has some kind of collaboration with Brickset, and they get their sets for free. His review of the Brick Bank came out before the general public was allowed to buy it, for example.

But he constantly goes on about how he buys his sets from stores.
