Jesus, they really fucked up Optimus Prime

On a related note, does anybody else wish DK would do a year-by-year reprint of the old Lego catalogs with some background info on their production?
>>5885058
That art was probably done before they had the model sheets to go on. The artist just had the toy to work with. Granted his head is still huge.
there's some good art on this site; http://micromanclub.tumblr.com/
He-Man box art was really good. Eternia looks like a hellish place to live in.
I remember being so awestruck when I saw this in stores back in the day. The Mighty Max line had superb box art.

didnt the artist for those paintings die somewhat recently?
>>5886140
Yep. Earl Norem passed away just over a year ago. In addition to doing the packaging artwork for Masters of the Universe, he did work for Marvel and illustrated several children's books about the Transformers.

Turns out the artist I was looking for was called Yoshiyuki takani. Still can't find a resource for much of his art. But Earl Norem has turned up some hilarious He man paintings

Computers ruined good paintings.
No one does textured oily looking paintings anymore.
Art today is so sterile and samey looking. Too much cloning is pathetic.
Bump. It's a really comfy thread
I always loved TMNT art

The name of the artist is Ezra Tucker. I actually e-mailed him and thanked him because that piece of box art made me want to become a professional illustrator as a kid( and I did!). It almost had a religious impact on me. I remember vividly the first time seeing it in a toy store in France. I'm from Sweden and we went there with the family on a summer trip. The second series hadn't come out yet in swedish stores (and being a young kid before internet was a thing I had no way of knowing there was going to be one at all) so when I visited the local toy store and saw the stacked rows of series two Dino Riders toys you can imagine what a incredible experience that was. When I saw the new box art I was totally floored.
Anyway, Ezra responded very kindly to my e-mail and told me a bit about what went into making the piece. I asked him if he knew anything about the whereabouts of the original and he didn't know but took a guess that's it hanging somewhere in the headquarters of Mattel (who merged with Tyco Toys). I tried to contact them because I desperately want to buy the original but never got a response, haha.

Just a small nitpick. Box art (and other forms of commercial art) was not done in oils but rather goauche or acrylics because of the faster drying time. But I'm with you a 100%, the art was superior back then.
Visionaries had some great art.

I imagine that's the expression you have when you're soaring at supersonic speeds without a plane and firing at targets on the ground and in the air.

One of my faves. I first saw it printed on a lunch box I saw in a vintage store, thought it was the coolest fucking image ever.
