Did anybody here order a Stickybones armature from the Indiegogo campaign? I'm super excited for it.

If you don't know what it is, it's a plastic armature with a specially engineered joint systems to get both super dynamic poses and to hold them. It was designed for animators and artists to use for stop motion or as a drawing reference. It's even got magnetic feet which is pretty nice.

what is his secret? is there a incredible amount of frames in his animations?
>>
>>5882633
Very high frame rate + just knowing how to pose his figures well and natural.

All takes a lot of practice. You can do it, Anon.
>>
>>5882638
He must know quite alot about anatomy because I have never ever seen animation as smooth as his and I really do have a passion for stop motion animation so I like to watch any I pass.
I have done just 3 animations of my own each progressively better than but I need something better than a camera and one of those things to hold the figure well for better posing.
Where do people go for their sound effects? I've got hundreds of my own ripped from a few games and a few stock sound effects and some from monster movies but where does everyone get those anime sound effects from?
>>
>>5882646
>anatomy
I don't think you know what that means. Gestures, probably.
>but I need something better than a camera
T-they all use cameras, though.

Try searching for Gundam stock sfx, search in Japanese if you have to. That has quite a few mechanical sounds effect, swooshes, beeps, etc.
I used to have a folder of them years ago, can't remember where I got it/don't have them anymore.
>>
>>5882646
better than a web cam I meant not camera. I've been stocking up on figure props too and I've been thinking of ideas for animations ALOT! its something that excites me alot. My mother watched one of my animations one day and she said why do they always fight? which got me thinking of other ideas.
>>
>>5882651
what software do people use? I used windows movie maker and it seemed pretty glitchy like sometimes it would crash and sounds wouldn't sync.
>>
>>5882660
Dragonframe is used by the big name guys like Laika, though funnily enough it's also kinda glitchy. In different ways of course.

It's all about reference and patience anon. I also recommend checking out the animators survival kit.

I was tempted to turn this into a feature length video but I got really lazy. Maybe I'll pursue it during my vacation next week.
>>
>>5882667
>animators survival kit
interesting I just might do that, I find that animating the feet is the hardest especially for walking and running its no wonder I see alot of stop motion animators using tricks to avoid doing it !
is that gif your creation? thats quite incredible. Do you just use the figma stands to hold poses? I've been talking to alot of youtube stop motion animators and they tell me they use these things called rigs which look like some kind of DIY construct.

I want to buy a camera instead of relying on my blury webcam, can anyone recommend one for stop motion animation?

Seriously though stop motion animation excites me more than any other animation and I like how although it is ALOT of work almost anyone can try it.
>>
>>5882674
Get an older but good pre-owned camera. Electronics go down in costs a lot. I don't recommend getting a heavy DSLR unless you don't mind having a lot of space devoted for your workstation.
Either use the self-timer, or get a remote for it. You want to avoid camera shakes from pressing the button.

Invest in a tripod.
>>
>>5882678
I have no idea where to start on this...the technical giberish given for the cameras stats means nothing to me and I have no idea what a good price is for a pretty good quality camera. What camera did you use for your gif?
>>
>>5882710
I'm not that Anon.

Just search for "good cameras 2010" or some shit, get one that used to be $400-600 or something and has great reviews, pre-owned.

Then learn how to take photos properly.

how about this one? the Canon EOS 1200D Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 III Lens
>>
>>5882721
Seems fine.

if /p/ has a questions thread, ask them what they'd recommend. I assume you don't know jack shit about photography since you don't know what the technical specs mean, so ask for older models that are newbie friendly.
>>
>>5882740
I did actually ask those guys a while back and they recommended this camera to me.
>>

Alright, then go for that one. I don't get why you're asking here when you've already got a recommendation from people who are more knowledgeable.

You overestimate how much your camera matters when it comes to stop motion.

As long as you can take good photos with it, that's good enough.

Looks like a neat tool but I'm not sure it's $90 neat. These days people just use 3D posing tools which can be had for free, albeit with a bigger learning curve since nothing will be as intuitive as having a figure. But it also has the benefit of allowing you to stage entire scenes quickly using primitive geometry that you might not have on hand with a real figure. And you'll need to be already well versed in anatomy, because I'm pretty sure that ab articulation isn't going to you the correct form when it scrunches up

Still, it's really cool and the magnetic feet and palms are great ideas.

>And you'll need to be already well versed in anatomy, because I'm pretty sure that ab articulation isn't going to you the correct form when it scrunches up

Well any artist worth their weight will already be aware of that. This is just like all of those other drawing mannequins, it's just there to give you a rough idea of proportions and gestures for sketching ideas when you can't have a model.

It's obviously built mainly for letting the average animator do some stop-motion without machining their own or paying thousands for a decent armature. I got in on it early when it was $75 and that was before a lot of the stretch goals were unlocked like the magnets. That's not much compared to what I've paid for revoltechs and other imported figures with a good amount of articulation engineering. So to me it's a fair price for what it is.

>>
>>5882678
This is good advice, not just for stop motion but getting cameras in general. You can get a decent/good camera that's 3 years old for about the same price as a new yet really shitty mid-range point and shoot.
>>
>>5882469
What's a good stopmotion program? I mean... do we even need programs? How do programs help, aside from the obvious stringing your pictures together?
>>
>>5884184
A good Stop Motion software helps a ton but it's not necessary by any means. I topped at 20fps without one but since I've been using DragonFrame I'm able to work at 24fps.

The biggest help it provides is a direct feedback on your work, you can play your sequence at any moment, delete or duplicate any frames you want. The other big plus is the Onion Skin feature, it overlays the last frame you took (or more than the last frame it's up to you) on the live feed. It's tremendously easier to make a stop motion with a program like Dragonframe.

tl;dr it's a big big help but it's far from impossible without it.

If you have a webcam or any camera that can be converted into a webcam by simply connect it with a USB cable to your PC
>AnimatorDV Simple+

If you've got 200 bucks (or the means to illegaly download it) and a compatible camera (the list of compatible cameras are on their website)
>Dragonframe

There's more than these two but one's free and the other one is used by Laika.

I'm thinking of writing a document that clarifies that and other things if these Stop Motion generals stick around.

>>5884179
I use a Canon 650D, entry level DSLR with the kit lens (and I also own a vintage Helios 50mm) hooked up to my PC through Dragonframe.

>It was designed for animators and artists to use for stop motion or as a drawing reference.

That's almost a shame, like they have their priorities screwed up or something. This kind of range of motion and the simulation of muscle tension in a figure should be what all toy companies strive for. These guys could step into the industry and really further the evolution of action figures.
>>
>>5885695
That range of motion is because it's a stick figure with almost nothing in the way. You could get the same thing with wire armature and some clay, a lot of artists do
>>
>>5885727

>it's a plastic armature with a specially engineered joint systems to get both super dynamic poses and to hold them

If you read that carefully, you might understand that its not as much about range of motion as it is about tension. A lot of action figures have good range of motion, but can't hold a pose for shit because there's nothing built into them to sustain that posing against their own weight, a breeze, etc.

Compare this thing to those figma archetypes and tell me which is a better ideal for action figures. There's nothing in the way with those, either.

Yeah man, If you want to start, the only thing you need is something that can take pictures, and something to put them all side to side at a certain framerate.
I knew a dude who took pictures and then filmed his screen while he was browsing quickly through his pictures in windows because he didn't know how to use movie maker.
>>
>>5885825
If you want stuff that holds poses just get revoltech. You're not going to get better than POM on POM for joints.

And figma archetype has a human sculpt with few gaps

I used a stand (or anything that can hold up the figure in place, really) and then removed it later.

Revoltechs are kinda shit for Stop motion, tho.

Well, not really shit but they're not really helpful with you want to make some subtle movements because of the space between the CLICK!.

Never forget to control your lighting. Use soft light and plenty of it with good spacing. You need 100% control, so unless you can control the sun, try to avoid using sunlight to light your subjects.

If you are looking to try your hand at stopmotion, make sure your camera has manually adjustable focus. Do not use auto focus or fixed focus. Make sure the cameras automatic lighting features like white balance can be turned off as well.

If you are using a green/blue screen, make sure the subjects are sufficiently far away from the screen to avoid casting harsh, sharp shadows on it.

I'm actually in the process of setting up a full guide right now with editing privileges. Ill have it open in an hour or so. It wont be near finished but it's a team effort.

Guide is meant to cover-

Animation Theory

Shooting with a mobile device

Shooting with a Digital Camera or DSLR

Editing Software Guides.

I'm willing to do an iPhone section and a adobe Photoshop section possibly today since I got 2 hours of waiting in line at a convention and I can type most on my phone. I can also do most of the theory section this weekend when I'm sober. Is there any other topics? I was thinking a recommended tools, toys, camera's section but I feel most of that is subjective.
>>
>>5887880
You can also have shoot with a webcam or 3DS that could be interesting to cover briefly at least. I don't know much about the 3DS other than there's a stop motion app made for it, though.

The other topics are subjective they can help the people that are really lost, give them a starting point, I don't feel like it's that bad of an idea.

I can also talk about After Effects, Nuke, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve.
>>

Do you or anyone else know of a good onionskinning program (preferably free) that works with Macs and Nikon DSLR?
>>
>>5887913
Check if your Nikon is compatible with Dragonframe
http://www.dragonframe.com/camera.php

If your Nikon isn't on the list, it's either two new or there's no tether option on your camera. If it's the later you're fucked (unless someone knows another way).

Check out their programs, the free ones usually only works with webcams but I might be wrong !

For those still interested. Would you guys want New threads to objective based? Like make an idle animation or recreate this .gif just to push participation? I have a feeling it's the main reason these don't hold because there's no incentive to make content unlike the Photo Generals.
>>
>>5891305
Put it as an optional challenge. Like the Lego generals do.

Generally these threads are just dump threads with little staying power.
The guide and a bit of an objective will do Alot to forge some community.

I like the idea a lot, it doesn't cost anything to try. I'm all up for it.

Their product isn't meant to appeal to y0ou

Post your stuff?

This is actually pretty good, anon.
How much was the figure?

Holy crap, do you have anywhere I can follow your stuff? This is stupid good.

retail, I preorder most of my stuff. so whatever he was when he was first put up on hlj for preorder.
>>
>>5892106
Irrelevant.
First response of someone who can't take criticism. One does not need to be able to "do better" to say something is sub-par. Even if their own stuff looked like shit, it doesn't negate the fact that the original looks like shit as well.
>>
>>5895158
Hey man, I made the webms but I'm not the one asking about the other anon to post his stuff.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's fine and I don't mind if anyone find my work terrible, shit, etc... and yes you don't need to be able to make a film/vidya/book to have an opinion on it, I'd argue that saying "It's awful" isn't really criticism but merely stating your opinion.

Again, I don't mind if anyone found my work awful but I'd find it more useful if there was a "why" it's awful, It helps me progress and that's relevant criticism, learning from your mistake, etc
>>
>>5887949
I've added part 5 about DSLRs, and I made separated Production software (stop motion app) from post production software (editing, vfx, export).

Is it understandable ?
>>
>>5895586
I'll add some photos as soon as I can aswell. Is it possible to post gif in a google doc ?

I'd participate in this
>>
>>5895158
Look, there's a difference between criticism and just shitting on something, you got the reply that your shitbox attitude deserved, now you're getting all butthurt because you got called out on it.

>>5897089
That's right, backpedal as hard as you can, looks like you're the one who can't take criticism.

Lose the attitude, maybe someone will take you seriously then.

>>5885892
did you do clean plate shots? like take one frame with the support stand then move it out of frame to get the background?

You inspired me to start building gunpla in 2010
>>
>>5885963
what kind of wire is that? with clay stuff its easy to just plug wire in but support stands work better with toys like that because they might not have ports to plug in and you can hide them better
>>
>>5898726
That's exactly how I did it, Dragonframe has a feature where you can take "Test" shots, they're kept in high res in a different folder.

That feature plus the Onion skin feature made it possible to take a picture, move everything out of frame but the background, take a "test" picture, move everything back in place, repeat the process. That way I can easily create clean plates of a shot where the camera moves around.

>You inspired me to start building gunpla in 2010

Thanks man, hope you got better at it than I am !
>>
>>5898737
Sweet I have dragonframe and played around a bit with the onionskinning it just seemed like it would be difficult to get the supports back into position exactly but I guess that's the best way.
what other kind of support stands do you use? Just the stage act type? Some kits don't have a plug in the rear, have you ever had to use the clamp attatchment to hold the model at the waist and then remove that part of the rig? it seems like it would be more problematic

Lol I was okay, I had a pretty popular youtube a few years ago but it got shut down due to copyright. Now I'm getting back into both hobbies. If these threads are still going in a couple of months I'll post some of my shit

I sometimes use the clamp but they're not very strong and don't hold very well, I often ends up using at least two support with clamps to hold a figure. It usually creates more work in post production to clean them out aswell.

I also use pic related sometimes, closest thing to a real stop motion rig. The only downside being the clamp's teeth are not kind on plastic
>>
>>5898710
That's retarded. It's just a static image with some film filters. Why not actually put some stop motion in it?
>>
>>5898840
Quickly made that yesterday as a test, I'll try to make some with animation when I've got more time

Dirty cheap setup, a friend of mine made this with shit he had in his garage.

In some of these shots, I just had the camera on the ground as I was moving it around frame by frame.

I know Patrick Boivin has used train tracks aswell.

It sounds like a grear idea actually

Yes. Probably would be the easiest way to learn the basics of stop motion since you have a set of poses you can follow and turn into a nice animation. Then you can branch out into your own animations.
