hasbro stuck pretty close to the G1 paint design.
Look at the vehicle mode. The center post is dark blue, the side posts are pale blue/white, the dark blue is in all the right places (even if they went with a slightly different shape) and the true blue color in the front is borrowing from the original design too.
The original toy had grey on his chest, not abs, and his arms were solid blue. The only thing hasbro changed is the thighs.

Hasbro is fairly toy accurate G1, Takara is fairly show accurate. Take your pick.

I like Takara's but I don't think it's worth the cost.

Not him, could try multiple solutions, a bit of primer, use topcoats to seal the paint in (clear gloss/semi gloss lacquer works, use model based ones).

I thought it was tying into idw but here megatron is back to his old glorious self in no less than his own gladiatorial arena (so he ain't an autobot just a recklessly bored savage).

I suppose my problems lie in the production values and where it fits, clearly an oc, a VERY short one, if you watch it you need to treat it as a separate entity that just happens to use elements from idw and g1.

Regarding Nosecone, Takara wins outright- he actually looks like Nosecone and the big goofy drill tank mode is just awesome. Hasbro Nosecone (and by extension Drillhorn) look OK in robot mode, but nothing like Nosecone (Drillhorn looks a bit better. A bit.) and the vehicle mode is strictly OK. I think I'd actually prefer the vehicle mode with the drill on the turret, with the turret in the forward configuration. The backwards tank with a drill sticking out its arse and a completely pointless turret just looks awful.

If that was cut even in half, (for say, tax cuts for companies based on how many people they employ in the US) then the costs could come way down.

If you think about it, G1 had japan designing all the toys. Now it's 90% US. There's a lot more jobs at hasbro than pretty much ever before.

Just to give you a clue why they are not in America: the wage of a chinese migrant factory work in these factories is around $1-2. The average wage of an American factory work is $20. And Hasbro apparently left their traditional Chinese outlets when their costs went up. So no you are not going to get made in American TFs until cheap robotics manufacturing can compete in terms of qualitty/costs with humans labor in the toy industry (which will occur eventually).

Basically, labor is cheaper in China, but they have to hire a lot more workers, since they are unlikely to have assembly line robots for a lot of the stuff like we have in the states.
They're getting there slowly, and that's raising the cost of chinese production.
But in general, it'll cost half as much to make it in China. The fact that the figures get shipped world wide also helps, as it means that some of their biggest markets have fairly cheap shipment costs, while the US gets a bit higher.
But weak business conditions (high tax rate, lack of existing industry) makes it less useful. This is why stuff like shapeways is so expensive still.

Why do these two not have a proper update yet?

They're actually headmasters, they would fit perfectly with the TR Voyager=Triple Changer gimmick, they have beast modes like a lot of the recent TR figures, and both haven't had figure for almost 30 years.

Lil' Apeface is cute and all but I really think the Horrocons should get another chance. It seems kinda baffling to me that HasTak wouldn't release the guys who are practically the pinnacle of the headmaster gimmick.

Update: for those who were curious about www.etoysjapan.com, I ordered from them exactly a week ago. Got Takara Skull in today. There's a few still available. Pretty fast budget shipping.

Anyway, he really is a lot of fun. No looseness as people reported on the US release. I was underwhelmed by Hardhead so I was partly regretting dropping $42 on this, but I can almost say Skullcruncher was worth it. His articulation is pretty nice, I just wish he had a little more, and the fake hind leg joints annoy me. The Dino/dragon minion is cute, but I need more extra Titanmasters to reply have fun with it. Takara head is a cool novelty and they really nailed the aesthetic, but I can see it wearing thin after a while. I may get Weirdwolf and mind wipe, but I don't have a problem with the US versions.

Because the Horrocons aren't main HM characters. In fact the Horrorcons only appeared starting in episode 18 of HM and didn't have prominent roles other than additional grunts for Galvatron and Scorponok like the Clones and Duocons.

The main characters in HM barring Scorponok are Fortress, Chromedome, Hardhead, Higbrow, Mindwipe, Weirdwolf and Skullcruncher. All of them have been done.

So far, any combiner set with the jet mold as the torso has been the most solid.
This includes Superion, Galvatronus/Grand Galvatron, and Computron.

I haven't handled the japanese stuff but I can say CW Silverbolt is alright as a torso, and CW Computron's only real issue for the torso is weak hips.

That being said, I'd probably say go for UW Superion if you want a guaranteed good set.

If you really like cars, maybe one of the lines with highly-accurate licensed cars might appeal to you. This includes the Alternators (Binaltech in Japan), Alternity, and some of the recent Masterpiece toys. The Alternators are probably the best car replicas out there (they even have detailed interiors), but the robots suffer a bit for it and some of the transformations are painful. The new MPs such as Sideswipe, Prowl, Tracks and their remolds are fantastic looking cars, but also good, modern robots too. I'd say go for them. Alternatively, if you like the movie look, the Human Alliance subline offers pretty nice cars and decent robots too.

It's more that UW Superion is not only full G1 in a box, it also was (maybe still is) a fuckload cheaper than actually buying the CW Superion if you want the G1 crew, which most people too.

Because if it isn't obvious to you Warden is listening to the Japanese. The decision to do Combiners after years of half hearted reluctance across two previous managerial regimes. The decision to do Masters afterwards. These were things Takara designers had been saying they wanted. He is clearly giving them input in decision making and listening to them.

1) Alpha Trion - according to the design arist at TF Nation he was a leftover from Combiner Wars. If he was in CW he would have become a Combiner instead.

2) Astrotrain is a series of redoes for Triple Changers including Blizwing, Octane and what is rumored to be Broadside as well as their remold mates in the form of OP, Megatron and Tidal Wave.

They just happened to be in this line and became HMs like how Cyclonus/Sky-Lynx was in CW and got to be a Combiner or movie characters like Rodimus/Kup/Blurr/Scourge became HMs.

So I got them on Sunday but I only opened them a couple of minutes ago and all I could say is holy shit they look amazing in person and that tab that I keep seeing that people cut off Pyra Magna are there as a stopper so her thighs are not fully pushed in like Hot Spot and Onslaught. It makes her slightly taller as a character and makes her different in a sense.

how did this meme start? Literally the only problems are Blast Off's forearm mode staying together (and even then it's still WAY better than Dead End's) and one of Vortex's rotors being loose. everything else is the same as Hasbro.
