For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

TWO DAY WARNING

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

Finally have time to work on my PG unicorn.
removed the ball joints for the verniers and cut holes to accept IC sockets. The hole in the verniers was a little too big to take the 3mm led directly, but a piece of styrene tubing made them fit perfectly.
I'll be gluing the IC sockets in place with some UV curing glue later.

Or plastic model should beginners know would not it comes down to "Recovering the way" without 's work or that it clean paint better. It becomes difficult to put out the hand because I think that can not fail, will not move forward any more because not return a failure to the original. So of mind that even if the mistake all right is, I think that it is essential in terms of continuing the plastic model.

Bawoo seems to be the most common guess but I think the wings in the silhouette are too big to be Bawoo's since its head fin actually comes up higher than its wings.

It's a bit of a long shot, but I think it's a Ga-Zowmn with its missile binders swiveled upwards just to throw people off.
>>
>>5849756
Good on you for fixing the MG's colours.
>>
>>5849762
That would be a most pleasant surprise, holy shit. The Ga-Zowmn is criminally underrated. Of all the grunts the Unicorn Gundam trashed the Ga-Zowmn had the best death of the lot. The Unicorn Gundam had to waste a whole missile pod just to dislodge its carcass from it's foot.

Yeah the EW color scheme is terrible. Insulting how they changed such an elegant design. But it made for a good, first paint job. Hell, first MG too.

Still scared to move it around too much but here's another pic for the fun of it.
>>
>>5849755
Well, the boss suits of BF were always 00 inspired. So 00 is kind of the 2nd most popular AU after Seed, I think? Wing suits didn't have any 1/100's before their MG's, or crappy 1/100's?

RG Virtue would be hard for them to pull off, RG Dynames and Kyrios has a good chance, with Dynames being the more popular of the meisters after Exia, and they can milk it with GN arms realtype.

>>
>>5849604
Based on what i'm seeing this might be a completely new mold and the hands are horrible all-gundam project hands.
>>
>>5850148
Only a select 1/144 kits have non-garbage hands. Wish they'd bring back B-club hands as an option part at least. Give us some fucking options Bandai, damn. The current option parts hands are fucking huge and look silly as shit on anything smaller than a Nu Gundam or something fairly large. Most MS have fairly dainty hands in lineart so why do the kits have massive troll hands?

I might be wrong but I think the elbows are pre-built and wrapped in rubber or something

>>
>>5850157
You are correct anon, I've never seen a kit quite as nice as this. I've only got 12 HG Gundams, ranging from an old gyan to the dainty mack knife, and this is by far one of my favourites. It's kind of cool that this is my oldest set and the most detailed one. I know it's almost twice the size of most 1/144 scale gunplas, but even so. I can't get over these elbows. It makes sense I suppose, it's the most accurate way to represent the eva without compromising on the articulation, but it's kind of overkill for a set this size, and one that's only two years younger than I am, give or take. My gyan looks like hot garbage next to this thing, very loveable garbage but he hasn't aged well.
>>
>>5850154
You do know the builder parts hands come in different sizes, right?
You probably just got/saw the larger size. They have a size small that looks perfect on my GM.

He is using way to much force on that poor model. He's not even supporting it properly, just mashing the arm parts onto it while it sways on the base.
>>
>>5850642
Thanks Senpai.

I figured out how to search for builder parts by size. It's a shame that 1/100 has fewer options though.
>>
>>5850513
It looks fucking great, but if I were to give you come criticism, it'd be the weathering. In some spots it just looks like you covered it in chalk, (Namely the chest and part of the backpack. and some parts look a bit fuzzy, and I don't mean the camera work.) There's also a couple nasty seamlines and some gunk on the chest. Like its top half looks like it was rolling around on the moon earlier in the day and didn't clean up. (Bottom half is fucking great though overall). All in all, great work, just a few minor flaws. Definately one of the better builds I've seen from fellow anons. (And no, I can't do better.)
>>
>>5850716
Does it? I thought they had the same exact options for both grades. Maybe all the 1/100 ones are just sold out? Either way, that sucks.

And to answer your question earlier about how to get a feel of the size before buying, it's.. kind of hard to tell unless you compare them to each other in person.

Anyway, good luck getting the right size, happy building.
>>
>>5850741
Yeah, most of the 1/100 stuff is sold out or backordered.

There are more 1/144th parts overall too.
>>
>>5850746
Huh, didn't know that. Guess they figured people are more likely to customize 1/144's since they're cheaper.

Say I want to replicate the glossy red of the RG on the MG and only have access to handpainting and spraycans, no airbrush. What's the best way to go about it?

Right now I am thinking:
>cover existing red with a (semigloss) clear coat
>Tamiya bright red spray can
>another (semigloss) clear coat
>decals, panel lines, touchups, etc
>final (semigloss) coat

How off am I?

Alright, so fuck Bandai for making it P-Bandai, but I need that Heavyarms Custom. It's all I've dreamed of for literally years. Anyone know where the cheapest place to preorder would be? I've been seeing some ludicrous prices already.
>>
>>5851473
No I'm not there yet in the anime, but I liked the designs from the GM threads so I ordered one. The picture on amazon just looked like a bad photo to me.
>>
>>5851479
it's going to be more expensive because you've got the base price of the kit with no discount + domestic shipping + a small markup to make it worth the middleman's time.
>>
>>5851479
>Anyone know where the cheapest place to preorder would be?
I know a place where if you order 3 you get the 4th one for free, but I'm not telling you where. :^)
>>
>>5851185
Just to get an idea, what time zone?
>>
>>5851494
Okay, even taking that into account, I'm seeing prices around $100 for a 5,184 yen kit (no discount). And I know domestic shipping isn't very expensive from my experience with middleman services. So....I'm looking at basically like a 3-4k yen markup here? Isn't that a bit ludicrous?

>>5851500
...ok?
>>
>>5850676
I dig the color scheme, shame about the orange peel on the shoulder though. Got a frontal shot of it? I'd like to see more.
>>
>>5851479
What country / city?

You have to put into consideration shipping costs and how quickly you want it.

Doing it through a middleman straight from JP and getting it shipped would cost about the same as getting it domestic from a physical store that stocks P-Bandai shit.
>>
>>5849394
What time do submissions close? I kinda finished mine already but I havent had the time to flatcoat it
>>
>>5851581
Yeah it's about 50-80% markup at least. Using a middleman would be cheaper by a bit. Gentei is the cheapest I've seen and the markup is close to 50%, but it ships from Japan.
>>
>>5851509
Eastern.

>>5851663
Like I said, effectively like Saturday at noon give or take.
>>
>>5851607
You're not going to beat a middleman at a domestic shop. Maybe gentei or samueldecal migmht if you're lucky on a smaller kit, like a HG. Got Shin Turn A for around $30 shipped from samuel but a middleman would've been around the same or more after the service charge and shipping (local + international).

But for a MG you'll likely get a better price with a middleman unless they rape you on shipping.
>>
>>5851706
Oh whoops, didn't read through the thread
>>
>>5851736
That's why I asked where he is from. I'm in AU and, after the shipping cost from Gentei or even buying it from Mandarake months along the line, the difference is between 10-20 dollars from a local shop.

Plus there's always sweet talking the owner for a discount.

Obviously it'll vary by country / state.

Finished my group build in the nick of time. Hand brushed and first full paint job. Had to start rushing it because of time, and two days ago a piece broke off the right arm near the wrist because of mineral spirits and enamel paints, so I tried by best to fix it but it still looks like shit if you look closely. Also first time scratch building for the first time, and added some armour on the lower leg and a gun holster on the back.
Overall a good learning experience, and although it's no where near perfect, I'm happy with how it turned out.

Did everyone do all sorts of retarded and horrible shit to their first kit or am I just a special kind of dumbass?
The story of my GM Command:
>Tried to install a LED on the head (Using a heated needle to make holes cause i had no tools yet)
>Oversanded the whole top of the torso thinking I could get rid of a stress mark and ended up sloping the whole thing
>Fucked up the shield real bad trying to get some shitty craft paint off it (I was using mineral spirits for some reason i can't remember)
>Chopped off the whole back part of the lower leg cause I thought it looked bad and wanted to make it cooler and add thrusters inside (But it ended up looking uneven and bad)
>Tried to separate the skirt pieces but I was still using a needle to make holes, this had predictable results
>Later when I got tools I chopped off the pegs and remade them using runner pieces, but the drill bit slid a bit and i ended up making the hole offcenter (Also got liquid cement all over the skirt when I was trying to glue the pegs)
>Tried to imitate that one tutorial where they drill the head vulcans to make them look better but the bit was way too big and ended up eating up the whole barrel

Thanks my man. Sadly a lot of added detail didn't show up too well, since it blends together with the military color scheme. Then again it was partly intentional, and it helps to hide all the various flaws as well.

Also obligatory beam saber pose, no flying because I don't have an action base built. The white line you see across the cooling unit happened when the cement didn't stick too well to the backpack and fell onto the floor, resulting in a crack along the seamline, along with paint chips everywhere.
>>
>>5853553
It's alright, those kind of things just happen sometimes, it's a learning experience. It's still pretty good though. I'm diggin the color scheme, too.
>>
>>5853566
And just after removing the beam saber hand the damn thing fell over again due to the new orientation of the cannon, and now I've got more nasty chips.

I could just drybrush silver at this point and call it weathering
>>
>>5853576
Did.. did you top coat? Isn't the whole point of top coat so that the kit doesn't scratch so easily like that?

You might as well try to turn it into weathering at this point, yeah.
>>
>>5853582
I did, one gloss and one flat in fact. I suspect its because I sprayed most of the kit in about 2-3 rapid coats, and I didn't give them time to cure before throwing them all into a container. I also test fitted some parts before gloss coating, which resulted in some scratches as well. Using spraycans to topcoat also meant I didn't have the coverage I wanted.
>>
>>5853582
It helps to an extent. But it won't stand against a fall or strong scratch from too tight parts.

If you really have to paint joints you should draw a circle around the peg, where the joint should be hidden, and file the rest down 0.5mm (or as much as you can to create a decent distance, just eyeball it).

Just picked up the Dark Matter Exia kit.

Its neat that they are doing more LED compatible kits now, but aside from this one and the unicorn series, what are some other led compatible kits?

Just got this in the mail today

I'm usually more into the old school designs but I really liked this one. I wish it was in 1/100 though.
I don't know why so many gunpla kits are in 1/144. It's too small if you ask me.

I only recently got into Gundam so I had to track it down on eBay.

Happened to have finished building the main body of that kit recently. I'm not that motivated to complete the rest of the weapons and backpack, but I'll get around to it eventually.

As far as other MG kits that are compatible with LED units OOB, there's the Origin RX-78-2, Hi-nu Ver. Ka., Sazabi Ver. Ka., Nu Ver. Ka., RX-78-2 3.0, Geara Doga, Jesta, Marasai, 00 Raiser, Seven Sword, Qan[T], and the Guntank. The Gyan also has a light-up sword. That's probably most of them, at least.

>>5854015
Yeah, I wouldn't really advocate throwing any kit away regardless of price, especially if stripping the paint was all that had to be done.
>>
>>5854015
You misunderstand. It's just a time/effort/cost ratio thing for stripping vs replacing a kit. When you put a cost value on your time/effort, replacing a super cheap hg kit is almost always going to be a better idea than going through the trouble to properly strip it. Assuming you value your own time at all. That doesn't necessarily mean throw the old one out, you never know when you might want to salvage just one little bit from it or something.

You can use tamiya or autosol or brasso or even some brands of toothpaste (the whitening types especially).

Buffing compounds basically contain extremely fine grains of some hard material suspended in a paste. So technically it's sanding taken to the extreme when you rub it onto a surface.

Alright guys, the group build is officially over. Since this is a proper contest this time, I'm going to post the builds in order of worst to best, and include my thoughts on them.

First, we have my least favorite, the GM Kirk. While not a wholly bad concept, it feels very lacking and uninspired. I will say however, it's far from the worst thing I've had submitted to a group build, and the whole point of these builds is to encourage people to experiment and paint.

Next we have the GM Sniper N. This is definitely one of the things I see as "Oh that's neat," but it's certainly not the best. I do quite like the color scheme, however on this one, it's a bit thick in places. Overall high quality for the group builds though (also pretty high quality compared to a lot of the crap we/I see).
>>
>>5854211
I really like the color scheme on this one, they need to work on their masking though. I just noticed that little bit of added armor on the shoulders too, I like that detail,

Man, I'm so excited to see all the submissions, I love GMs.

So this is one of the GM III Hammer. At first, I got a giggle out of it, but as I kept looking at it, it's really damn well done. It's also kind of indicative of what you can make early on in Gundam Breaker III. That aside, I love seeing the Gundam hammers, and I absolutely love the color scheme on this one (by the way, if you're in the thread what shade of blue/purple is that?).
>>
>>5854226
Tamiya Purple mixed with Tamiya Sky Blue and Tamiya White. I don't remember the ratios though, sorry.

This is another one with some minor issues, but it's still the runner up. It wasn't named, but as you can see it's something of a cannon type, which I adore. The color scheme is well thought out, and the decals (where they didn't silver) are well placed. It's also the type of thing I would plan out myself which is partially why it's number 2.
>>
>>5854222
Chin up anon, it really isn't so bad. Paint needs work but that's something that takes a few tries to get down. The idea is kinda weird, but at least you're not lacking in the imagination/creativity aspects of the hobby.

Sure you got the lowest rank in the group build but that's because you're (I'm guessing) still sort of a beginner at this while everyone else has had a good amount of practice and experience. Inspect the other entries closely and you'll see what they did well and what you could do to improve yourself.

Now for the winner, the GM Overcoat. For anyone who saw this posted back when I got the submission, there's probably little surprise this won. I also thought it would be a hard act to follow.

It's very well planned out. It's got a good color scheme, and a solid aesthetic. It's also got an attack drone from the looks of it, which is neat. This is honestly the type of thing I expect at GBWC, and for it to win.

The winner is going to be contacted via email. I'll give them until next Saturday (8/20) to respond and claim their prize.

I don't like the bulging forehead and imo there's a lack of detail on the chest, but I can respect that its a quality model and really well finished. That build was not helped by the fact that some chucklefuck was spamming the straw poll in /m/ threads and telling em to vote for the pink option.

Not exactly. I just tend to see a lot of haphazardly placed decals.
>>
>>5854468
You're right. I was running out of time and rushed it out. I used a couple references at the start, and then it devolved into slapping them on nilly willy to break up the monotony.
The two white ones on the chest I really regret. It was my first time decaling at all, and the base painted kit looked extremely boring, so I had to put quite a lot to spice things up. Another one would be the cannon.

I'm still masking my gm, but even after I paint it this round I'd have to remask and paint another coat to try and get the dazzle camo effect.

its one big circlejerk and everyone wants to be in the circle. I used to go to the group builds and they all seemed like ok people but when they started the so cal gundam model competition their egos got huge. They should absolutely be excluded from entering their own contest. Especially the main guys like clem and dan and them. I mean by all means they should enter the gbwc and use those kits as a kind of way to set the standard for their own competition but definitely not compete (and win) their contest. Rigged from the start, I knew from the first year Angel won with his "THE-O" it was good but there was better on display there. It was a popularity thing pretty much. disgusting.

So is RG Sinanju really that fragile, or is Mecha just full on retarded with his hamhands? I've seen a couple reviews by nipponese/korean guys where it had similar problems but to a lesser degree.

While I'm on the subject, which reviewers, youtube or otherwise do you guys normally watch before purchasing a kit?
>>

he was being retarded to get views.
I watch zakuaurelius because I want to fuck his wife
>>
>>5854885
Both actually, the frame wasn't meant to hold that much weight and may require some stiffening, and Mecha was being too heavy handed with it making the problem even worst.
>>
>>5854885
Slightly more fragile than usual, but it's also hamhands making a small issue seem huge.

Also, Once we get the new thread started I'll post pics from the Otakon GBWC if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I actually talked to him for a bit and he does know his stuff, but god damn does he shill his website and competition hard. He was handing out little business cards to every single person he could.

Does anyone have the steps to paint something metallic like pic related?

iirc it was something like:

>primer
>gloss black? Chrome??
>Clear color
>>
is there any weapon/upgrade kit or some sort of 3rd party release to give the 1/100 Barbatos its mace?
>>
>>5855027
step 1: cut parts from sprues
step 2: pay money to plater shop
step 3: snapfag together plated parts
>>
>>5855027
It's called Candy coating. But to get it really damn nice looking?
>Clean surface
>Prime
>Sand primer smooth with super high grit paper
>Good quality gloss black
>Sand gloss black with high grit polishing compound
>Good quality Chrome paint
>Clear color
>High gloss coat

For a basic candy coat just gloss black > Chrome/silver/similar metallic > Clear color.

Buy the 1/100 Barbatos form 6. It comes with the original mace as well as the dino-chainsaw one.

That Izumi's Valkyries Shiranui looks great. But shouldn't there be coloring in the center of the shoulder pads (the sections next to the chest).
