For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Not much time left now!

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

Are you serious? I don't have problems mixing Vallejo or Tamiya unless it involves a really weak color like yellow. Fuck, why did that anon tell me they were fine.

Is their CR line the only line that mixes well? I don't see it on hobbywave. Would their clears mix with GX? If not I'm going to cancel the order and order gaianotes from sealmodel even if it takes like 3 months to arrive.

Vaccumed the silicone, didn't get around to buy the pressure rig yet. Bubbles were driving me nuts though.

>>5844039
The sensors are probably the most labor intensive part of the build.

Basically they have 3 layers: crap glittery silver, clear fluorescent lacquer and then the actual clear paint.
>>
>>5844044
Just the GX colors or all mr color in general?
I know gx is supposed to have high pigment but not sure what that means for mixing. Everything on the mr hobby site says they can be mixed with other gx or regular mr color.
>>
>>5844050
Don't a lot of companies make vacuum-free (or vacuum unnecessary) silicone now?
>>

Neat. I was considering doing something other than just silver backing my F22, second Typhoon, and Su35.
>>
>>5844052
Just GX as far as I know, it was a reddit thread that compared Mr Color GX to Gaianotes and apparently Gaianotes mixes well while Mr Color GX produces grays.

>vacuum-free (or vacuum unnecessary) silicone
Yeah, that's what I started with too (Oomoo).

It's soft and it tears like no tomorrow if your master has complex shape you will tear it to pieces on your first demold.

Silicone that won't tear (MaxMold) is very viscous and you need to mix it like crazy so you end up with ton of air in it and vacuum is pretty much a given at that point.
>>
>>5844082
Have you tried Mold Star?
>>
>>5844095
Nope.

From what I read its tear strength is lower and it's more expensive being platinum and all.
>>
>>5844109
Yeah, but vacuum pumps are expensive.
>>
>>5844111
I paid something like $300 for a pump + chamber, so it's not that bad (pressure chambers are like $500-$600 without the compressor) and I can also vacuum slow-setting resin in it.
>>
Has anyone tried simply clear-coating an, MG for example, flat or satin instead of fully painting the kit? How does it look? I'm wondering if it could be a shortcut to having to do a full-blown paint job.
>>
>>5844126
If you hang around some prop making forums people occasionally use pressurized paint pots like this.

https://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-H6329-Paint--Gauges-37288-Gallon/dp/B0007D2D7I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470629999&sr=8-1&keywords=grizzly+pot

Which looks exactly like the C.A. Technologies pot, but with extra stuff that needs to be removed and plugged with bolts, and a curved bottom.

The cheapest professional pressure chambers I've seen are like $800 for a small one.
>>
>>5844171
yes to all, its always been that way and recommended for beginners or anyone who wants to rely on plastic colors but have a nicer finish, did you read the guide?
>>
>>5844181
The problem with paint pots is that they are rated for 45psi and the manual for resin casting says 80psi and then people get pic related.

Seriously though, most of my casting was done with a 3-min resin which I injected in portions into the molds. By the time I was done injecting the thing was already half-gel so the pressure chamber was kind of pointless.

And the slow resin I can just vacuum for the same effect.
>>
>>5843968
>>5843970
Looks good anon, just like you

>>5843969
The two blues look good, but the orange brown thing not so much. That's just my opinion, at least.
>>
>>5844228
What resin do you use that needs 80PSI? The grizzly pot is like 2x the mass of the Harbor Freight pot so it should be tougher at least.
>>
>>5844242
SmoothCast.

Some instructions say 60 some say 80, either way 45 is not enough.
>>
Anyone know how to cancel orders with hobbywave online? Or am I going to have to call them first thing in the morning?
>>
>>5844190

Matte/Flat is usually the way to go, it can hide a lot of imperfections and marks (even ones from the molding process) while a gloss coat is hard to pull off well for unpainted kits and will only accentuate defects. That and a matter of aesthetics, military robots will hardly ever be on a mirror shine even if they're not weathered.

I pulled up pic related from google but it looks like a bad coat to me, but even this shows off the results

Speaking of, I had some questions about that.

I really like building Gunpla but I want to step out of snapfaggotry besides basic nub removal and panel lining.
I'd really like to get into painting and further customizing kits. However, I'm also not sure where to start with painting. Should I paint by hand or via airbrush? Is this "masking" I hear about sometimes just covering parts with masking tape to avoid getting paint in areas you don't want it? Should I worry about/how should I avoid conflicts with articulation, like paint rubbing off? I understand practicing with plastic spoons helps.

How should I best sand models? I have some sandpaper and use it, but it's really fine at around 6000 grit or so? It gets worn out fast and takes time to use. Where should I be getting my sandpaper? How should I best avoid accidentally gouging bits of the model if using a knife for nub removal? That drives me nuts.

Besides the OP guide, is there anything I should know? I was thinking about the /tg/ WIP thread but I don't think they'd much enjoy or encourage this.
>>
>>5844643
How much does decanting actually give you?

I'd like to try the UV cut topcoats but I don't use spray cans at all since I only paint indoors and $13 + shipping sounds like a steep cost to decant and lose half of the stuff to the wind.

>>5845099
Read the guide.

Apart from that, start with something simple like matte top coating some of your snap kits and then maybe try painting something simple. I recommend starting with spray cans at first, painting is not for everyone.

For sanding start with a variety of high and low grain sandpapers and gently work your way up grains on the nub. When you get more advanced I recommend investing in a set of hobby files for sanding as they are a lot more precise.
>>
>>5845099
>Besides the OP guide, is there anything I should know?
First of all, the guide in the OP links to multiple other guides and pages. You have a lot of information to digest before you have absorbed it all.
That said, in order to answer your question, yes. There is tons you should know. People have been building scale plastic models for decades, and there is a culture associated with it. These people have clubs, magazines, websites, all devoted to developing your model building skills. While the traditional modelers build cars, military stuff, all of the techniques they use are applicable to gunpla, and they have all been divulged all over the internet.
I am not going to regurgitate anything. Read the guide. Look up finescale modeller. Use your brain and do research.

>>
>>5845303
Pretty decent, arms and legs are are very basic with 90º of articulation at the elbows and knees but they mostly do what you'd like. Hands are the only thing I'd outright complain about.

Rock has a sort of extra joint in his hips that allows for some extra posing as well as double joints in his feet.

Roll has an articulated ponytail. Her main limiting factor is her skirt, but it's not too band and due to how freely it rotates you can get her to pose decently. Her foot articulation is simpler than Rock's and the assembly of her body for swappability between her Mega Man and Mega Man 8 looks can make her knees come off, but that's usually rare and it is in no way a dealbreaker.

Hey so I posted my kit in the /m/ gpg thread a few days ago after I had finished the straight build and applying all the stickers. I mentioned that I had ordered some Mr. Top Coat Flat Spray and my next intended step was to give it a matte finish but the couple anons that replied to my post advised against it. Well the topcoat arrived in the mail today and I initially decided to go ahead with it anyway after spraying some of the runners to get an idea of how it would turn out. I thought it looked pretty good but there's a difference between a small line of plastic and an entire kit. So before I pull the trigger and totally commit to doing this I figured it would be nice to get a perspective from the builders over here that don't visit /m/'s gpg. Normally I wouldn't be so finicky over what to do with a kit since if it turned out looking shitty I could just buy another one, but this particular kit was pretty hard for me to get and I'm not sure about how easy it would be to get another one.

So tl;dr if it was up to you would you go ahead with the flat coat? Or use a gloss or semi gloss coat instead? Or stick with no coat at all?

In the event this post doesn't get ignored, thanks in advance for any opinions and/or constructive criticism.
>>

>bare plastic
Flat coat
>fully painted
Gloss if you want, flat otherwise
>Scratch marks, nub marks, imperfections
Flat
>Supposed to be shiny
Fully paint and gloss

Really it's up to personal preference. I only gloss coat mecha that are already really shiny like the Hyaku Shiki. Everything else almost always looks better with a flat top coat as it covers up imperfections and scratch marks.

What are some good start kits for zoids? I'm not as familiar with them as I am for the scaling with gunpla and I have a friend that wants to start with that.

The Xenoblade X kit pre-orders are ready for shipping now.

Knowing Kotobukiya, what are the chances they'll release the other skells?

I might be tempted to future-proof and get a second kit to mod it into a Lailah or a Verus.

What do you guys think?

>>

Haven't done exact measurement but I guess a little less than stated on the can due to waiting for the propellent to gas out. Nothing some thinner can't fix.
>>
>>5845921
How long did you have to gas it out for? Just overnight?
>>
>>5845964
Yeah. In front of a diy spraybooth. But i decanted in the morning so it can be capped before bed.
>>
>>5845155
>decant and lose half of the stuff to the wind.
Then you're decanting wrong. Cover the top of the glass jar you're decanting into with painter's tape, use more tape to tape a straw to the can's nozzle, poke a hole in the jar's covering tape, and spray away. If everything's taped correctly then there shouldn't be any mess at all besides some light fumes.
>>
>>5845973
Did you have the spraybooth running all day? Sounds loud. Well I ordered some gloss and flat and flat base. Hopefully I can get as much as possible, 170ml is a ton of paint.
>>
>>5845999
Mine isn't loud but the sound would definitely keep me awake at night.

Have fun decanting. There's a guide on tamiya's website when you google so read that up first.

It's a process of trial and error so always have some paper towels ready.
>>
>>5846054
I've decanted before with varying success, but I always end up with a disappointing amount.

>>5845977
I'll try the painters tape. I tried plastic wrap with holes poked in it but it was mediocre.

>>
>>5846080
Gundamplanet and hobbylobby are the only places that sell any decent paints.
>>
>>5846061
I see. For me I use a 80ml bottle (mr hobby brand because it was also at the shop), attach a short straw to the nozzle with blu tack and spray away. Stopping to wipe condensation off the straw and shaking the can once in a while.

Degassing is leaving the cap on (not screwed, just put on the prevent dust from going it) and waiting half a day.

A toothpick in the decant will make the evaporation of the propellant much much faster but that's how i got a foam volcano on one of my first attempts. So i poke and withdraw for a while until I am sure it won't overflow when i leave it in the decant.

Terribly sorry for the wall of text.

It's nice. Check to see what the finish will look like (even if just by comparing the other names of the finishes).
Flat will have no reflection at all, Satin or Matte will have a (very) little sheen to it, between Flat and bare plastic (which is semi-gloss if you want to re-reacte it). I'd say Satin would be similar to a matte photograph or maybe a polished tire?

Maybe actually ask your questions?

For painting, if you don't want to half ass it, spraycan primer, followed by handbrushable acrylics or any enamel, then topcoat.

The paint guide probably wouldn't help you much, you're better off finding what you can procure locally rather than trying to ship paint from Japan. Also they could totally be lacquers which are unsuitable for handpainting.

>>5846923
What are you even trying to paint. Why can't you do both sides at once?

Sorry, I was just kind of confused.
I'm hand painting so I just wanna make sure I do it all right. It'll be my first HG painting, and I think I will have to use some masking tape to separate parts for coloring.
>>
>>5846944
Good luck with your attempt.

I don't think acrylic paint likes to adhere too well to gloss coats, so you might have some issues(read: a lot) trying to do multicolored pieces without parts separation. You'll have to mask the primer off, paint and gloss, then remask the edge or freehand the rest.

Looking at your pic you'll probably only have problems with the shoulders so it's not too bad.

Is it even possible to achieve a colouration effect like this with hand paint?
>>
>>5847942
yes.
>>
>>5847942
Technically yes, through hours and hours and hours of painstaking wet blending but I don't think anyone who could do that would ever choose to do that.
>>
Hello. I know this will seem sacrilegious, but does the 1/100 MG Gundam kits scale with Robot Spirits?
>>
>>5847955
Nope, 1/100 is a lot bigger. HG's are kind of a crapshoot if they're a similar height, as RDs tend to be a bit on the smaller side.

From the sound of it, brush painting is pretty tricky. Still, the alternative is hardly better since it's more expensive and I will definitely find a way to poison myself somehow

check the blending on this and the next couple. While they aren't gunpla, they are hand painted. Two hand painting techniques to look into are OSL and NMM. Both can look amazing on gunpla too.

Just lol. Taken from a random site: " NMM is the acronym for Non-Metallic Metal, the term referring to a miniature painting technique."
Every instance I find while googling for NMM/Non Metallic Metal refers to it as a technique. Same thing with OSL, it is categorically referred to as a technique.
Feel free to argue, but jesus I can't hear you with your head so far up your ass.

Please allow me to educate you, our intellectually challenged friend.

>a way of carrying out a particular task
>a way
in other words, a "process".

Now, does the name "non metallic metal" describe a process? No. It describes the end result. Which incidentally can be achieved in more than one way.

"Dry brushing" is a technique.
"Stippling" is a technique.
"Photorealism" is NOT.

Do you see the pattern yet?

>>
>>5848309
Because it's 95% the current MG Heavyarms vEW, just repainted?

It's a good thing that Bandai isn't overinflating the line with a bunch of minor variants. We got enough of that crap with MG Unicorn.

In other news, Bandai announced a new official international P-Bandai delivery service:
>>
>>5848322
Looks like that's just describing the process of using forwarders/proxies which is already what people did to buy P-Bandai anyway.
>>
>>5848322
>>5848326

Yeah it's just a proxy. Looks like FromJapan is dropping the service charge for the buyers, but you still pay shipping to and from FromJapan's warehouse.

Basically, they're going to list P-Bandai items on those services' sites so it's easy for foreigners to find, and there might be some added bonuses like no service charge. But you still end up paying Japanese local and foreign shipping, and in the case of the other two middlemen, a service fee.
