I also saw the Hasegawa model kit gacha when I was looking for mini gacha machines. Hasegawa is very accurate as a scale model, but is not functional... you cannot turn the knob or make it dispense toys. I like the Takara/Tomy 1:12 toy gacha because it's cute and it works, even though it is not proportional to a real machine.

The clear discs come with stickers. You put them inside the capsules, as if the prizes were buttons or hockey pucks or something.

If you're talented with polymer clay, it's possible to make little figurines to put inside the capsules, as long as the prize is 1/4" or smaller. You can also put beads or small metal charms inside.

Well, the manufacturer is EPOCH, and the robot is generally called "Epoch robot" or "Epoch doll body" or "Epoch capsule body". Those sell out really fast. Just a month ago, toysanta@Rakuten had them for sale but they're sold out now. Right now, Epoch is advertising new gacha for these robots- weightlifting sets.

They seem to re-release the robots fairly often. The original run was 03/2016, and the re-release in new colors was late June/early Jul 2016. Keep an eye on their website and see when they announce another re-release. Then jump on Toysanta and order them ASAP.

In Japan, it might make sense where you just go back to the gacha machine and pump more 100 yen coins in and sell off your duplicates at the gacha shop.

But if you're in another country, you can't do much with your 5 extra Kylo Rens.

Yes, but not like what you see in Japan. In the US, all we get is the TOMY capsule machines that mostly Asian-owned businesses have. See pic. You're lucky to find 16 of them in one store, not like the hundreds of them in one shop like Japan. And the gacha toys sold out of the US machines in nowhere near as awesome as the ones you get in Japan.

Looks like the only way to feed the gacha addiction in the US is to mail order from Toysanta or CandySan or places like that.

Well, actually, in my experience going to Japan, people walk around with 1000 yen notes and use the change machine to convert them to 100 yen coins for the gacha machines.

It's been a long, long time (like, 1975) since kids could get toys with pocket change. We don't even see 5 cent or 10 cent toy prize vending machines anymore, not for decades.

The part that sucks is that the TOMY machines in the US aren't packed with the nicer gacha (the 200/300/400 yen stuff) probably because the machines can't take 16 quarters like a laundrymat. So they're stuck at the $1 level for toys, and that price level is just not where the quality stuff is.

where I live we get the japanese gashapon toys but use specialized tokens and pay for each at the counter. each token is affected by a markup so the toys get very expensive, especially when it costs 2 tokens or more.

You know, I love the idea. If only a store in the US (perhaps in one of the geek/anime/nerd cities or comics conventions) would carry gacha in large numbers (like 100 machines), I'd love to book a flight!

But, based on what I've seen in discussions at other toy boards, I think the issue is simple economics. Regular (US) vending machine toys are sold in bulk at wholesale rates of 10 cents per toy w/ capsule. They can be sold in machines for 50 cents. That's a 5x markup. That amount of profit is what floats the seller and enables them to keep restocking the machines at supermarkets. 50 cents is still pocket change, but the toy quality is low.

Gacha, however, needs to be imported from Japan. Unless gacha is available at wholesale rates that allow a 3x-5x markup, it's not profitable for a US store to buy a bank of machines stock capsules.

Instead, comic stores and specialty stores here have to buy gacha at retail or close to retail, and then mark it up to sell to US consumers. That explains that whenever I see gacha in the US, they're in boxes and the sushi cat gacha (300 yen in Japan) sells for $6.99 or $7.99 in the US.

Agree- clearly there's a market for this kind of civilian stuff. Seems to me that the US market is missing out on a huge opportunity. For some stupid reason, cool accessories are ONLY sold along with a figure that you may or may not want. In Japan, all you have to do is waltz over to a gacha machine with 3 coins in hand to buy these cool accessories standalone. And you can buy as many as you want, without paying $15 each to get accessories with a boxed figure.

Don't know if this counts, but I got this Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass stylus attached to a strap for the DS from way back in 2007 from Amazon. I think it must be from an old Gachapon set because they still have similar stuff (for example, pokemon ones). I got it because I don't have any stylus that fits into the slot on my original DS Phat and I wanted one to attach to it. It is really nice actually. I got the red potion version.
