I agree
Don't have anything to contribute, but this >>5815505 is lovely!
Do you any of you make your own houses from scratch? How would you go about it?
>>5818699
I have that exact same TV.
Woah

There's a ton of books with blueprints and detailed instructions for making your own dollhouses. Many are older, so they're quite cheap on Amazon. Though personally I would suggest getting a pre-cut kit instead if you have never worked on a dollhouse before. You can sometimes find them pretty cheap on Ebay, or brand new through miniatures.com or hobby shops. I know Miniatures has a pretty cute beginner level house called the Buttercup that's like $25 and will help you get the hang of it before you jump into a more expensive bigger one.
This is my grandma's dollhouse. Its what got me into wanting to make tiny shit. I have some room detail shots if anyone's interested. It was decorated some 40 years ago so its a little more toy-like than some of the nice ones in here but I like it.
Built this one a while back.
>>5815513
this is incredible this is so so so incredible how do they do this? are all those buildings custom built or bought? its so inspiring I would love to make a diorama like this infact I would use it for stop motion animation, very exciting to look at.
>>5821512
>this one looks really nice but i would want one without the kitchen things, can those be removed?
yes, the furniture is removable.
>>5821756
neat, what is the set called?
>>5818703
I build playsets all the time
Built this spaceport for myself
>>5822375
don't lie MF, you aren't Empire
>>5821512
Here you go. Most of this is old and a lot of it is handmade (my grandma made the little bedsheets and stuff in this room). Its really great to have one with the closing front wall, it keeps everything inside nice.
>>5821627
Anon its just model train buildings. Nearly every hobby shop has them.
>>5822913
Sorry these are old pics and most of the other ones I found are out of focus. This one is actually my dollhouse.
>>5816694
>This is fucking awesome, what was it called?
It's the Imaginext Firehouse. It's an older set and probably hard to find nowadays. The two figures are 6" and just under 4" respectively, and both kind of work well but really it's meant for 3" figures. It's also got a lot of kiddie action features, all activated by round little pedestals the Imaginext figures can plug into and activate.
>>5815815
I'm always tempted to buy that set when I see it at Target, but then I always remember 1) I don't have the money for it right now 2) I don't have the space for it right now and 3) I would need to buy lots of nice furniture to go with it. But it's such a nice, simple space and it's neat seeing a high quality doll house that has a more modern design to it.
Hopefully within the next two years I'll have a house with a nice sized basement for me to go wild in. In my old place, I could set up some pretty sprawling displays, but currently I have most of my stuff packed up in boxes. Once I get some more room though, I would love to go back to setting up some nice big warzones.
>>5822896
Yeah it's me
I mostly only bother with 1:18 and maybe sometimes 1:12 scale builds but any basic box of whatever material could be converted into a building playset diorama, I just prefer to use plywood so it can hold up to actual play. If you're just strictly displaying it only then much lighter easier to work with materials would be the way to go. I would just hate to put hours upon hours of work into something that some derp cat or some ham handed kid could fuck up within seconds.
whats the best way to make wooden furniture? i feel just glue is not enough.
does making dowel / joint too much trouble for small furniture? Does it look ugly? someone has any experience?
do you guys recommend a dremel for this kind of job? or any other tool?
>>5823034
Who's that walker mech in the background and also that bombed out house?
>>5824900
The walker is a GI Joe mech suit, the Cobra Deviant. Iron Hammer and the Steel Marauder are pretty much the same but with different colors and weapons.
The house in ruins is the world peacekeepers battlefield set.
There is also another interesting set showed here: >>5825755
>>5817550
Now, what was so embarrassing you had to blank it out?
is there any way to make dollhouse furnitures with Popsicle Sticks that doesn't look crappy?
>>5827499
Yes.
1) use a miter box and saw and trim off the rounded edges of the stick. Real lumber does not have rounded edges.
2) Stain and varnish the wood.
That is a very nice popsicle-stick wooden shack.
Skeleton invaders get a culture shock on their first visit to a record store.
Shelving was made from popsicle sticks. Building and storefront made from MDF clipboards.
Outside view of shopping district.
These were made from the made-in-China DIY (assemble it yourself) dollhouses. Buildings are about 8" x 7" x 2.5".
The backstory is that Skeleton Warriors were sent from the planet Luminaire to conquer and destroy the humans on our world.
BUT... they grew enamored with modern living, and decided to settle into our culture instead of destroying it.
It's not the greatest thing in the world, but for 20 bucks, the Yucky Mart's not a bad playset.
>>5830761
scale?
what scale are monster high? i will like to make some furnitures.
or i have to make them according to their body?
>>5831502
1/6 or playscale size. Same scale as Barbie, by the way, so that should open up a whole world of tutorials for you.
1/12 is dollhouse size. That's Figmas, Shinkis, Picco Neemo, and Nendo.
>>5824870
What scale? I find glue has the best hold and minimal bulk for anything under 1/3.
I don't use power tools at all, just hobby saws, wood carving knives and files.
>>5819775
You can use Nendoroid playsets too.
>>5815500
Anyone have that pic of bugmen in a living room?
Also, i need sauce on the furniture in that pic
>>5834946
Is this one?
A while back (like 6 months or so) an anon posted some pics of a studio diorama set he had bought. It was supposed to be for things like Ultraman and kaiju and was meant to display the toys as though they were filming toku scenes. Does anyone have those pics or even remember what I'm talking about?
>>5824601
Thanks for posting all those pics and progress updates of Rot-Gut station. You're one of my main inspirations of trying to make 1:18 scale dioramas. I like that it's your own sci-fi creation and doesn't belong to any specific toy line.
>>5827824
This is great. Did you make the record sleeves and books?
>>5836336
This is great. Did you make the record sleeves and books?
Yes, I did. The records, books and magazines are scanned from my own collection. Yeah, I like The Monkees, Neil Diamond, Queen, Cheap Trick, The Cars, Kiss, The Beatles, David Bowie.
The Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck records were added as a joke, but they are good singers.
The books were 3 scans, front, spine and back. Cropped and edited together in Photoshop.
The records are 2 scans- front and back. Some of these were small Columbia House record club stamps made into record covers.
Print them, cut them out (allowing for tabs). Glue the tabs together and *bam* you have a realistic record cover.
There are 2 record shops. The larger one was a DIY dollhouse kit, but I expanded it to make it bigger. The smaller shop was a scratchbuild.

I've been watching the anime Akage no Anne/Anne of Green Gables recently and seeing this doll house makes me want to live on a farm so badly.

Where can I find some of those little bottles?
>>5840020
Not same anon but they're standard inexpensive dollhouse bottles. Ebay, Amazon, and Minatures.com will have them. Just search for "dollhouse wine bottle"
>>5830844
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but approximately 1/18 in scale. I'll try to get pictures of mine tomorrow.
>>5840020
Hmmm, well, it was part of the "Green's Bar" dollhouse kit. They did not include bottles. These had to be assembled using a teardrop shaped bead, a piece of clear tubing, with the wine label wrapped around it. Clever way of making a bottle without including actual bottles in the kit. See circled detail.
Green's Bar inside. completed. Kit costs about $18 incl shipping to US. In Asia, these kits are cheaper. Skeletons not included in kit.
>>5840146
I'm assuming those skellies are 1:18, Hacks and Kaiyodo perhaps.
I have a 1/6 scale doll of myself. This photo was taken about a year ago and the diorama has since been broken down in a move and has not been set back up yet. I'm still always looking for items to add to it once it's set back up again and have alot of fun doing so.
>>5838800
this is beatiful
>>5841048
Dude that's hilarious. Where did you go to get yourself doll-ified?
>>5841669
I got the head made at thatsmyface.com and bought or made everything else separately.
>>5817585
Can those figures' legs fit under the counter or do the chairs have to be turned like that?
Also off topic but is that a 1:1 scale scissor blade in the back? What is it made of?
>>5835705
You're looking for the Tsuburaya film stage diorama. I have no clue where you'd be able to buy it, but I do know it was about $400 at the time of release.
>>5841048
>Tsuburaya film stage diorama
???? this is amazing
where did you get the small nintendo and dragon ball figures and stuff
>>5842403
Most of the little figures I've found for my toy collection's toy collection are capsule figures, HeroClix, keychains or accessories from other figures.
>>5842032
Not same guy but it looks like standard model shop terrain to me. Try either looking for model train terrain or dollhouse gardening.
Where could I find miniature things like dakimakuras, wall scrolls or nerdy figures and things like that online ? I've tried to search but nothing I try has results
>>5844572
>dakimakuras
can't you just custom print some anime girls onto fabric and make a basic mini-pillow with it?
Pic related is my first attempt at a diorama. Sorry for the potato, and the stain came out MUCH darker than it looked on the can, so please excuse the 'little miss edgy' color scheme.
Anyway, I used plywood, but wasn't too satisfied with the results. miniatures.com had a comparison between baltic birch plywood and medium density fiber board. Is baltic birch plywood a specialty kind, or is that the industry name for most plywoods you'll find? How easy is it to dent fiber board? And I noticed miniatures.com specifically said that particle board is different from fiber board, but I'm fairly certain all my cobaanii furniture has been particle board. Is that another option to look into, or is particle board too fragile for a diorama room?
>>5845102
Baltic Birch is a higher grade plywood that costs more than regular plywood. Baltic birch has multiple layers of high quality wood sandwiched together. Standard plywood is usually 3 ply or 5 ply with poorer quality wood on the inside.
Particle board and medium density fiber board are different. Particle board is basically sawdust glued together and molded into sheets, usually 1/2" thick and up. MDF is made from wood dust, glue and resin, but pressed under high temperature and high pressure, so it is harder than particle board. You can get MDF in 1/8" thick sheets. You can recognize it as the stuff that clipboards are made of, or pegboards in machine shops or auto repair shops or workshops.
Since particle board is almost always 1/2" thick, that stuff is HEAVY. Not recommended for dollhouses. The walls would be too thick and bulky and the roof would be impossibly heavy.
You're better off with standard plywood or MDF. They both look fine once you paint it.
>>5845183
Ah, okay, thanks a lot for the crash course, that's a big help. I wasn't too happy working with standard plywood since it would warp so much (I ended up making the base out of cardboard to keep it flat, actually) and the saw would strip the backing off of the pieces of plywood. I'll try again with MDF and see if it goes better, thanks again!
>>5845221
Wha....? Your saw strips the backing pieces off the plywood? What kind of saw are you using? A circular saw? Actually, I prefer a jig saw, and I use really fine blades, like 24+ or 30 TPI.

Yes, use your head.
>>5848456
I suspect Lego would be the way to go.
>>5848614
Too big and expensive
>>5848426
This stuff is funny as hell!
At first glance, they *LOOK* like regular comics and magazines, but after a closer look, these mags have been warped and twisted with a lot of subversive humor! Great job!
>>5848426
These are great. All I need a little comic rack for them:
How do you put these together?
>>5848904
Soldering iron, solder, some paperclips, pliers and a lot of patience?
>>5848904
I print them out, cut them all to the same size (there's a slight problem with the Watchmen magazine) and then use a staple through the center. The legs poke through the outside and, I was thinking, would look like two staples at scale.
That's not actually how it turned out, admittedly, but it's the best I could think of at the time.
>>5849676
you can get a stapler that presses them outwards instead of inwards.
>>5848432
Do you have the link for that fake avengers site?

Thanks, anon
I've been eyeing the Fisher-Price Grand Mansion, It's a great option for 1:18 figures.
Would a dremel be good for, say, cutting a window hole into the wall of a plywood dollhouse, or is it not really good for things like that?
Fairly tool illiterate, so sorry if this is an incredibly stupid question to people that know things.
>>5852578
Not really. Here's how to do it. Use a pencil and draw the windows on the plywood. Use a normal cordless drill with a 1/8" bit and drill 4 holes- one in each corner. Use a jewelers hacksaw and make 4 straight cuts- from hole to hole, using the hole to turn the corners so you don't break the blade.
Another option is using a jigsaw with a keyhole blade. Use a 3/16" drill bit for the 4 corners. Then make the 4 straight cuts, using the hole to turn the blade at the corners.
>>5852595
Ah, thanks a lot. That doesn't seem too hard.
>>5852595
Why is there not a dremmel version of a sawsall?
>>5852847
You mean like their Saw-Max, which is like a mini version of a circular saw? Yes, Dremel has saws, but they are not the best things to use to cut out dollhouse windows. You'd have to use them like a drop saw and it's hard to precisely cut out a window and not overshoot.
I have the 670 mini saw attachment for the Dremel rotary tool, bit it's really hard to see where you're cutting because of the plastic safety guard. And it would also need to be used like a drop saw.
I prefer the precision of the hole-in-4-corners-use a jewelers-saw method. If I'm feeling lazy, the jigsaw-with-keyhole-blade also works.
>>5852143
Found one at a Goodwill for 5 bucks, it's pretty nice.
>>5852934
No, a sawsall is a reciprocating saw.
>>5848904
That looks like a fun project. Maybe this method I used to make wire guards for 1:18 work lights could be adapted for your purpose.
A pin vise was used to drill a hole through the wood at one end. The wire is run lengthwise, through the hole, pulled taut and run back down the wood on the other side.
Then the wire was wrapped around the wood over the lengthwise wire, fluxed and soldered. 24 gauge silver craft wire and a 40 watt soldering iron were used. Dremel with cutting wheel used to remove it from the wood.
>>5848614
Lego would be interesting, but I'd rather something in either Joe scale or Figuarts scale
Skeletons continue their shopping spree.
The dollhouse bakery is by Pakitoy (China). It's getting harder to find these days, and I didn't know that these were limited to late 2013/early 2014 when I ordered one.
They fit 4.75-5" figures pretty well, so the girly Figmas and the Figma Archetypes would look just right in them.
More shopping!
The tailor shop and the Jazz club are scratchbuilt, in the style of the China DIY shadowbox dollhouses.
>>5856733
I love those mini bolts of fabric. Can't believe I never thought of doing that.
Is miniatures.com overpriced, am I missing something, or are the room boxes just schmuckbait? 50 bucks on miniatures.com for something that took me half an hour and 7 bucks to make.
>>5858264
The other room boxes look more reasonably-priced, plus they have an acrylic sheet.
The one you show in the picture is hideously overpriced. It's a big-ass room, but yeah, it's only unfinished MDF and you can get MDF for cheap at Home Depot. It's not rocket science to cut panels out of an MDF sheet.
Maybe this stuff is meant for people who are power-tool challenged.
The "street of shops" in that category looks cool, though.
>>5858264
Its not necessarily miniatures.com, more just dollhouse kits in general. No matter what retailer you go through they still cost way more than die cut plywood really ought. I think its just the hobby dying out (literally, kit builders are mostly middle age to elderly), and newcomers are usually into custom building or foamboard sets for shelf display, so they keep upping the costs in an attempt to continue scraping by.
I regularly go to one of the bigger dollhouse miniature shows and the hobby is obviously changing in major ways, there's a pull away from catalog sites like Miniatures.com (which started as a mail order store) and a heavy emphasis on small artist made items that can be gotten through Etsy and similar.
>>5856733
Nice
>>5858264
I think the price gouging is because if you haven't got the space, incentive etc to have a small workshop/powertool station then it's one of your only ways to get what you need.
Also you need to be competent with basic tool use, which honestly a lot of people aren't and have trouble cutting straight lines etc.
>>5858632
I think part of the problem (hobby dying out) is that dollhouse manufacturers are still aiming at a segment of people who are willing to spend hella money on the lighting, furnishings, etc which can easily go to hundreds of dollars for one house.
Guys/bros/dudes (who are action figure collectors) apparently love the Power Team Elite set ruined buildings for dioramas, and they like the "Lori" dollhouse for their 6" superheroes. They also like Mi-World. And why? Because those are reasonably priced, and quick to assemble and come with everything you need. The Lori comes with basic kitchen furnishings and Mi-World has tons of accessories.
Another segment of the market that's overlooked is 1:18 scale dollhouses and buildings that are pre-painted, come with furnishings and lights. That's one of the reasons why I like the stuff coming out of China (Pakitoy, DIY/Cuteroom) and Japan (Billy). Everything you need is in the box. I have a tendency to improve and customize them a bit.
Maybe the solution is for more 1:18, more kits that include everything, less emphasis on Victorian-era and girly stuff. More things that appeal to both genders.
>>5861362
I think like you said, the hobby is stuck in antiquity. There's a glut of Victorian furniture and anything modern comes from the 40s-60s. Aesthetically, everything is outdated.
I've always thought a 1/12 dollhouse in the style of one of those IKEA 200 SQFT apartments would be amazing. They'd be compact, modern and dust proof and nice looking with a ton of clear plastic to emulate Windows and allow people to look in.
Pic related is such an example.
>>5861707
Yah, agree on what you just said, Fakimus. Something like the pic you show could be the future and salvation of the dollhouse hobby.
There's no reason for a Victorian with a music parlor featuring a piano and violins, cellos and Victrolas when modern action figure/doll collectors think that a music/entertainment room with guitars and big screen LED TVs is way more like it.
The IKEA apartment concept will work. Even superheroes need some downtime, and maybe they have meetings in these kinds of apartments. It's adaptable to Figmas and anything else that's about 6".
Another thought I have is that dollhouses don't need to be so complex (and expensive) with the lighting. There's no need for lighting tape, actual mini electrical outlets, or transformers that plug into the wall. All of this came from a time (1960's America) when that was the only way to light a dollhouse. Incandescent mini bulbs weren't bright enough nor energy efficient enough to run on batteries.
Modern alternative is the style of my Pakitoy bakery. All of the lighting is with 5 LEDS, all attached to a 9 volt battery. The entire house is very portable. Just pick it up and plunk it wherever- in the next room, downstatirs, anywhere. Everything, the dollhouse, all of the baked goods and the lighting was about $56.

TBQH, never understood this LONDON meme
What it is about?
>>5862792
Not that poster, but yes, they're little Tupperware containers they sell at Michaels and other craft stores for holding beads and little things. There are also pic related.
Ramen Stand, scaled-up. Heavily influenced by the "Billy Dollhouse Showa Ramen Stall" kit that they sell in Japan. Unfortunately, the original scale of the stand was too small for my purposes, so I copied the design for a scratchbuilt project.

New World Peacekeepers Quonset hut.
I have a few dollhouses from when I was a little kid. This thread made me curious about using dollhouses to decorate my house. A nice, classic looking dollhouse could look really good hanging up somewhere.
>>5861835
do you have more info on pakitoy? its pretty cool how it comes with everything. do they do 1:12?
>>5865157
That 焼 is triggering my autism
>>5875681
Well, the Pakitoy dollhouse stores are getting hard to find- seems I can only find them on dhgate or Laminiworld.
They don't come in 1:12. The Pakitoy stuff, and most of the "everything in the box" dollhouses coming from China vary between 1:24-ish to 1:15-ish. You'd have to look at the finished measurements and convert cm to in to get an idea of the true scale.
1:12, aka traditional dollhouse scale, is the stuff on miniatures.com, or greenleafdollhouses.com. Those companies sell you a barebones dollhouse (for mostly reasonable prices) with the assumption that you'd sink hella money on lighting, furnishings, flooring, etc.

The "Yakisoba" banner was harder to paint. P.S. lantern lights up. Battery box is hidden underneath the wooden tub.
I took the banner and the lantern to the local Japanese cultural center to verify that it's readable and understandable to a Japanese audience.
Also won 1st place at the local county fair with this, under "miscellaneous arts and crafts"
>>5876812
Yah, but 1:24 is not nearly as popular as 1:12. Ironically, Playmobil is 1:24, so cheap, mass-produced dollhouses and accessories can be had by shopping for Playmobil, if one is not into truly wooden dollhouses with authentic scale accessories.

I'm tempted to buy pic related, but I think is too small for my ninjas.
>>5880084
Depends how tall your ninjas are...3.75 or 4"?
Whenever these made-in-China DIY dollhouses have their dimensions stated like this, it's pretty accurate. Unfortunately, a building height of 14.5cm= 5.7in. Then, because of the high roof building design, the doorway looks like it goes only halfway up, so at best, the door is probably only 3" high.
This can be modified with a jeweler's hacksaw or a keyhole saw. Raise the doorway, the window and the counter by 1 inch and it may look fine for 3.75" figures.
This dollhouse appears to have working lights. If you can get it for $40, it could be worth it.

Oh yeah, I gotta lot of dollhouse and custom stuff on my Flickr album too. These projects were done over a 6 year period. Working on converting a "Captain Bar" in to a Pirates of the Caribbean-type pirate bar now.
Miniatures.com is having a labor day sale if anyone's been hunting for something. Gives me a nice excuse to actually finish my tea room instead of just staring at a blank sheet of MDF.

H-how big were your potato bugs?!
>>5894839
Well, I saved this screen-cap from past threads.
I'm making one of my first real dioramas, so I just have to ask if getting real veneer flooring is worth the cost over just using printed paper for flooring.
>>5899202
When I'm in a hurry I use mostly factory printed textures for flooring, they are easier to apply and look nice. If time isn't an issue I use real wood.
I usually frequent these threads, but I've been so preoccupied with building dolls house stuff (I want to start a business)
Been playing around with lighting lately, I think this turned out pretty cool. (I ended up insulating the fridge so less light escaped through the sides after I took this, but since I don't have my own camera I haven't retaken it.

Among other things, making a whole dolls house from scratch, this is the progress on the first room so far.

>>5902970
that's frigging adorable
don't know if anyone remembers me but i am pumpkin dollhouse anon. the other day i was at michael's crafts and found mini string lights in their halloween miniatures section. they had leaf shaped ones or jack o lantern shaped ones. they are spaced pretty far apart, but you get a good few feet of lights which is more than enough to deck out a dollhouse. i taped them up just to see how they'd look real quick, and i think its pretty cute. one pack was enough to string both floors of the house.
>>5903109
the messy downstairs. i just wish i could hide the black wire, but i dont want to embed the lights into the walls because then i'd have to fuck up them up if the lights stopped working.

ha, thanks anon! i'd love to see someone else try to make a pumpkin house. i really wish i had just gotten a smaller pumpkin, if it was a one room house i'd definitely would have been able to finish it and it'd probably be great. i just bit off more than i could chew with this thing.
>>5903409
Believe it or not the dollhouse club I used to be in did pumpkin houses for a few meetings in a row. Mine got refitted into a regular jackolantern when I moved out of my parents house but I think my grandmother still has one. We did just one floor and they all came out different decor. I'll ask her tomorrow if she has pics of it.
>>5904056
holy shit i never thought of that, such a good idea, thanks!! definitely going to do it. i think i could use raffeta, the bulbs dont get hot so there won't be a chance of it catching fire.
>>5904065
that'd be cool, thanks! also i just noticed some websites actually sell half pumpkins now, so people can make scenes / turn them into candle holders / etc. so now it'd be even easier for people to try it out.

Rement has this small dios for 4 inches figures.
So I bought one of the Ikea dollhouses. They're thicker wood but they're meant to be hung as a shelf and are only $30. The thing that is a little odd is the top floor has a far higher ceiling, which almost makes it look like a 1/6 floor with a 1/12 floor stuck underneath. You could probably fit a bit of foamboard in there and make an attic though.

Has anyone had any luck making sand dunes without actual sand?
>>5931873
I once tried salt mixed with some sandcolored flour that was in the kitchen, I mixed all with water and white glue, the results were meh, it was too yellow.
>>5931873
I mafe pretty convincing snow by making the shape out of wood but the material doesn't really matter. Then apply a good layer of pvc glue and pour on bicarbonate of soda, put on plenty so as to cover everything abundantly.
Press down vertically with a short, thick and hard brush by tapping quite hard repeatedly then let it dry and turn upside down and tap gently to remove excess.
If necessary add another layer of pvc glue ( this time watered down) and more bicarb.
Repete until happy with result.
Want sand? Paint it sand coloured with an airbrush preferably or a rage brush with very liquid paint, but airbrush is best.

I own the catapult, got at a Hobby Lobby a couple years ago. Despite sitting on a shelf for that long, the arms still bend nicely, though the string could use a little tightening.
So I just got this monstrosity, Tracy Island playset from the Thunderbirds Are Go series. I haven't messed with the electronics, but the mechanics of it are fun as hell and it just looks beautiful. I'm hoping to get my hands on some giant monsters and robos to climb on it. I'd really love to build it out into a proper cityscape, anyone got suggestions?

Is garden variety CA glue going to be enough for sticking wood to plastic? Been meaning to make a shooting range diorama for the longest time and Miyo's coming this month.
>>5947177
Not really. Cyanoacrylate (Krazy Glue/Super Glue, etc) has a tendency to be brittle when dry, and the problem is that wood absorbs it, so it won't stick to plastic very well. Recommend LOCTITE 5 minute 2-part epoxy for wood to plastic.
>>5947241
Ah, thanks. Just need to decide how to do the walls and floors then. I'm thinking MDF with a layer of pla-plate cut and painted to look like cement. Though printing some sheets of cement or brick wallpaper and flooring would be a lot easier.
>>5947177
Me again. Found this for the wall. Close to perfect, but I was picturing gray instead of white. It says it's plastic veneer - will that handle paint well without ruining the texture? Or does anyone know if they make this in gray?
http://www.miniatures.com/Concrete-Block-Plastic-Veneer-Sheet-P19564.aspx
>>5947612
I have a better suggestion... the classic dollhouse bricks made from egg cartons. Use regular craft acrylics (recommend Americana) and sponge it on the egg carton. Sponge again with a slightly lighter shade. Cut to brick shapes and seal with acrylic sealer. Glue them on your MDF/plywood.
The best part- tint real spackling paste (lightweight) and use it to grout the bricks. Then, at the end, you can apply a paint wash to dirty and age things up a bit.
The end result has a texture and authenticity that can't truly be duplicated with plastic molded sheets.
Here's an example. Dollhouse DIY kit from China that has lights, but they weren't specific about how to hide the wiring, batteries and switch. I decided to add this chimney as a way to hide the electronics, as well as add a period-appropriate touch.

What scale is it? I saw the figures, they are 3-3/4" scale. But the vehicle they made for them is noticeably smaller.
does anyone has any guide or tips for dry brush? i am triying to make some wooden floor and some boxes, and try to add details and i got suggested to try dry brush but it always looks bad.
sometimes the brush has too much paint, and others times it has less, but when i stroke there is no difference or don't add any color.
any suggestion?
>>5953163
Just blowing ash I sprinkled in front of the camera as I took a series of quick shots and chose the best one
>>5955612
Most of the set is scaled to the vehicles, and I'm hazarding a guess that those are somewhere close to 1/200. There is a section for Brain that's about 1/18, but you could easily put it to other use.
>>5955917
I'd say to skip the dry-brushing if you're using real wood. Instead, use Testor's acrylic paint wash (CreateFX). The stuff soaks into the wood, and gives it a nice, gray aged color. You can also dilute your base color (brown) and rub it on the wood with a rag, and then apply the paint wash. Then seal with a matte clearcoat.
See my examples. On the left is a plastic crate from a military figure set, painted at the factory.
On the right are my various handmade wooden crates, treasure chests and dry goods sacks. The crates are Testor's wash only. The treasure chests have a dilute dark brown acrylic base coat and then Testor's wash on top.
Plastic requires full paint application and drybrush, while wood only needs very light, rubbed-on colors and tints.
>>5956788
great job here Zee, I like the look of those chests and thanks for the advice.
This was a $20 DIY Dollhouse kit called "Captain Bar" (missing the possessive 's). The kit has good bones, but needed modifications to make it into a "Pirates of the Caribbean" pirate skeleton bar.
The kit did not include a storefront, so I had to build one from scratch by cutting up an MDF clipboard.
Increasing the building height by 3/4" was a good idea- it brought the building into 1:18 scale. That also meant modifying the furniture and building the barstools from scratch to make them match the new height of the building.

You can also use a vinegar and steel wool solution to stain wood.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP0pO-Xe0tQ
>>5979023
Thanks for the advice and tutorial, but I think the vinegar/steel wool solution would work better with real furniture and life-sized signs. I'm really leery of chemicals, esp the ones that require you to wear gloves while handling. And, since vingar is heavily diluted with water, it would swell and possible warp/distort tiny wood pieces used for miniatures (like 1mm or 2mm in thickness), smells bad while wet and takes a long time to dry. I'm just more comfortable with acrylic-based paints and tints.
Need pirate cutlasses for your figures or dioramas, but you don't want to spend much money for them? All you need are plastic sword party picks, a cheap/free source of ABS plastic, power drill, epoxy and paint.
>>5982825
great job, what kind of paint did you use? did you prime it before painting and if you did, how many layers did you use?
>>5983771
The paints are acrylic, DecoArt for the metallic and Americana for the dark brown handle. Both available at any craft store.
Yes, I used primer (pic #5). It's Testor's Model Master acrylic. The hilt has only 1 primer coat, and the blade has 2 primer coats. I have enamels, but I've grown fond of acrylics for easy cleanup and being non-toxic.
>>5982825
Now I need a bench vise
>>5989017
It's not what you think it is. It's a little plastic hobby vise (costs between $2.00 and $5.00) mounted on an old cutting board. Very handy and transportable tool.
>>5989113
Thanks for the clarification, I was going to buy a small plastic bench vise anyway.

Pirate bar in a more complete form, now with a base. It's now about 1:18-1:15 scale. Skeletons are October Toys and Kaiyodo Dokuroman.

What materials did you use for the palm trees?
>>6002840
Just follow this tutorial:
http://miniatures.about.com/od/miniatureprojects/ss/modelpalmtrees.htm
I cut my palm fronds thicker than the instructions said to do. If the fronds are cut too fine, they can break off too easily and then the palm leaf w/ missing fronds would look pretty terrible.
A trip to the Dollar Tree should get you most of what you need.

I have a bunch of mcfarlane halo guys and want to make some kind of diorama or display of them. I'm thinking a big field and some simple structure like in the first mission of reach. any suggestions of how to make some terrain and housing? preferably cheap and easy (as it can be to look good. I realize it won't be as cheap and easy as I'd hope it to be)
>>6021118
Plywood board, paper mache mix to make an uneven ground. Then cover with your choice of color landscaping (for model railroads). Or, if you're cheap, go to the Dollar Tree and look in the flower-arranging aisle. They have Spanish Moss in 2 colors- a dry yellow-olive green or a fresh green. Chop up Spanish Moss into smaller pieces and glue to the base.
Structures? Like a wooden shack, or were you thinking of a ruined building? Look at the posts by "Shady War" a little further up.
>>6021462
>Structures? Like a wooden shack, or were you thinking of a ruined building? Look at the posts by "Shady War" a little further up.
I might build something out of wood. I could go for the ruined building, but I would have to find something that scales well with the 5"ish figures, and I don't think I'm skilled enough yet for the weathering like he did.
thanks though
>>6021480
Ohhh, 5" HALO figures. In that scale, it's difficult to find buildings. 1:12 buildings (standard dollhouse scale) would look too large- the 1 inch means a lot in small scales. 3/4 scale probably would work but those are hard to find.
You could scratch-build using MDF. You don't really need to build a true 3 dimensional building. For a diorama, maybe a few storefronts packed together, only 1" in depth (just enough to show something behind the windows). Like this:
>>6018827
If the paint doesn't work well (that looks like it might be synthetic which are tricky sometimes) you can try grinding some chalk pastels into it. Maybe give it a spray with a hobby sealant before and after so it doesn't transfer to your toys.
>>6021944
Foamboard is a good cheat if you don't have woodworking tools. Can carve into, use paint and plaster to resemble masonry, or glue wood veneer or even popsicle sticks to it to look wooden.
anyone have expeirience with diorama's? I really want to make a half corridor for my xeno's similar to pic related. Anyone have an idea of what materials should be used? it almost looks like at cheapest I could make the wall bumps out of fimo
>>5818710
Where'd you find it?
>>6022169
So should I just bother the bloaks on the custom board? Also bumping a twonderful day old thread
>>6022169
looks to me like its foam board for the wall base and some sort of clay/sculpey for the shapes on the surface
>>6022169
It looks like polymer clay. But it might get costly in that quantity.
Looks to me like you can use a very soft wood, like basswood that you can cut with a box cutter/utility knife. You don't really need a miter box saw. Then you can sand the edges of the pieces to soften them. Paint with primer and then spray paint the panels with ivory paint.
Advantages of basswood over Fimo/Sculpey:
1) cheaper
2) lighter
3) already comes in an even thickness, no rolling pins necessary
4) takes standard paints better than polymer clay
5) does not require as much hand-shaping or leaving fingernail marks in the pieces
I dun fucked up and bought a hasegawa set without knowing that it needed to be painted, because I'm a newfag to this kind of thing. What kind of paints should I be using?

Cheapest material is leftover cardboard boxes and cardstock(cereal boxes). In fact, looking at a Reach playthrough, the corrugation of the cardboard would be perfect for the fences.
