Well the Figuarts are really nice, and still available at places like Mandarake for ~¥3500. The best thing about them is the accurate matte eggshell white finish, every white part is fully painted. Articulation is decent (the hips slide down the thigh swivel slightly, this fixes the big complaints with them) and they come with two guns each.

The model kits have slightly better articulation (although the elbows are still limited to 90 degrees, come with both helmets and two guns. That said, you obviously have to build it yourself, the fit and finish isn't as seamless as previous kits and the armour is glossy.

Personally I like the Figuarts for their finish and sturdiness.

Want really dynamic, action-filled poses and don't mind it looking a little skinny? Revoltech is good.
There's the Bandai model if you're into building, but you might need to paint him to look his best.
Figuarts isn't out yet, but whenever they get to it, it will probably be the best all-around. Bandai's Movie Realization version is nice for a showpiece with crazy aesthetics.

I have an Emperor Palpatine BS figure and for whatever reason he has double jointed elbows despite him being a frail old man who doesn't really need them. Farmboy Luke certainly needs them more than he does but again I feel they're only there because the cloth is able to hide the joints.

I don't know what on Earth compels them to think like that but it seems like they do.
Still doesn't explain why they didn't splash for double jointed elbows on the Force Awakens Stormtrooper despite the OT Stormtrooper and Clone Trooper having double joints though.

Maybe this has to do with actor likenesses for the most part. Look at the new Jessica Jones and Punisher from the Netflix MLs, they too both have single elbows. For Jess sure for whatever reason their current females don't have double jointed arms (though the 3.75" do occasionally) but they have the trench coat body and it has double elbows.

I would assume it's either some sort of mandate to try to preserve the sculpt or just at the sculptor's discretion.

They're great. I only have that one and a couple of the black series so I donno about the model kit, but the figuarts is a really good option. Good to great articulation, especially in the torso, great paintjob, and the way the pouches are hinged is a pretty good solution to them just getting in the way of every other stormtrooper I've bought. My biggest problem is that he has really tiny feet that are also curved upward, which makes him a bitch to stand sometimes.
