Common sealants for faceups (there are more, but these are most frequently used):
>Mr. Super Clear Flat/Matte (UV-cut is preferred)
>Testor’s Dullcote (tends to get dirty easily)
>Citadel Purity Seal
>Zoukeimura Finishing Powder (it’s a spray by Volks)
>Liquitex Matte Medium (airbrush)

The general population of /bjd/ are anti-recast or are pretty much neutral on the subject. Stop beating the dead horse every thread by asking.

From last thread:
>Debate over flash photography yellowing dolls (not bloody likely) and what constitutes a good faceup

>More crying over Len being lottery only. Wait a couple of months, hopefully it’ll be like Snow Miku and go to a preorder status.

>Good Blythe customs are hard to pin down; the majority are pretty creepy without eyebrows.
Also a lot of shit about comparing recasts to the different non-legit Blythes going on in the confession blogs.

>Guiding an anon that received a recast as a gift from her boyfriend to figure out a solution.

>Edgy anon’s going to buy recasts just because they can. :^)
Okay. N1curr.

>SIO’s shitting out more adorable things. (Stacy’s Pink Ocean is selling them if you aren’t patient enough to use Taobao, which is cheaper)

>FantasiaDoll (or w/e) is making that female muscular body which looks like it is similar in posing to an AprilStory body.

>DoA debate over their rules and inconsistency

>One anon got a super cheap DOD/Luts hybrid for $30. Brought out nostalgia in a few anons.

>Discussion on Dollshe 18M popularity and the woes of doing faceups on their faces

>Lots of Kayke’s abominations have made it to their owners.

>Sealant discussions

OP here; going to add: I'm not a guy, but it's my penis envy.

One question. Are dolls with molded shoes offtopic on DoA? For example, Evangeline or the kitty doll from Doll Chateau?

Yeah, the kitty dolls with molded shoes are off-topic on DoA for whatever reason. That's one of the biggest bullshit rules for me. Also bodies that have the non-jointed high-heel legs only. I think Angell Studio had to make one of their newer bodies to have optional flat feet with an ankle joint so it would fit the criteria.

Other than that, I'm alright with their rules.

>>
>>5786528
They are not 'fully customizable' in that you can't change their shoes. Fixed hair and non-changeable eyes are included too.
You really have to read the topic criteria and reasoning behind it in full (and maybe even some background) for the context to make sense. But I think it does. The company also could have made alternate bare feet, that would solve it.
DoA doesn't expect anyone to make or buy their doll to suit DoA rules and they say themselves that their rules do not define what a Bjd is or is not but only that they have carefully considered the criteria and rules as the best ones for DoA. There are quite a few mods and drugeons too so it's a pool of wide interest and experienced people.
They accept suggestions as well, but they run the forum successfully for quite a long time too so it is working.
>>
>>5787030

Yeah but DoA has enough influence that their word on what is or isn't a bjd might as well be law.

That high heel leg rule is fucking retarded and you know it.

>The company also could have made alternate bare feet, that would solve it.

You can't say DoA doesn't expect anyone to make their doll to suit them and then suggest that very thing in the same paragraph.

As I've said before, it's been happening, it's just a slow creep.

Eve's been doing some furries, luts has anthros, I think soom, even fl have had some cat boys and stuff. It just takes awhile for things to pick up enough steam to get popular, especially with as I've been saying how difficult it is to really get 'into' the bjd community.
>>
>>5787238
I'm saying that if a company wants badly enough to be accepted to post and advertise in a forum that has rules then they should follow them. DoA themselves state that their rules are neither arbitrary, fair to all doll owners or makers, for everyone, nor the sole definition of Bjd, in fact they state the very opposite on that last point.

But if someone, (whether company or new owner) cares about posting to DoA then yes, they need to consider those rules.

I'm not so sure why it's so difficult to understand.

A private individual, the owner of website who pays for it and the hosting, software, bandwidth, everything...makes a forum with rules. Expects users to follow the rules. Very simple.
>>
>>5787243
I don't have a problem with doll owners shelling anthro/furry characters. It's not my thing but it's easy enough to avoid it just like any other doll topic I don't like.
>>
>>5787243
So where's the line between 'oh gorgeous fantasy boy with paws/hooves' (SOOM super gem) and 'ew furry' all of a sudden? Or the cat-headed or fox-headed or dog-headed dolls that could all easily be painted to fit a personal furry character or included in furry storyline. They've been around quite a while. DoA being restrictive on anything beyond hugging and kissing or mild nudity in photos and only allowing tamer stories has kept yiffing scenarios or story arcs out so...?
>>
>>5787513
They are human except for certain parts of their bodies, something that has been imagined already in ancient times (i.e. nothing new).
Furrys are animals that can talk and walk on two legs.
The community and very own porn style is what people probably can't stand, and most people immediately have these pictures in their head when they hear “Furry“.

There's a big difference between a human dude with hooves and a full animal that talks and walks upright.
Add the whole sexual aspect and it gets weird for many (and for some it's probably close to bestiality).
>>
>>5787546
Adding: there are a lot of people who cannot stand anthro dolls either.

Most are okay with them as long as they are small, cute and have no potential to be sexualized (you can sexualize everything, but most don't see something sexual in a YoSD sized anthro from Pipos).
When the Hujoo SD animals (Amy? Amie?) were released you saw lots of post how this is creepy and going too far, because that was going too close to “usual Furry aesthetic“.
>>
>>5787546
It's a good discussion. I'll be interested to see where it goes if more people post things like >>5786576 but I haven't read the thread yet. Assume it did not really blow up because no keks or caps.
I'm sometimes even slightly repelled about the fantasy animal parts dolls, especially if they have claw hands. I don't have any and sort of waffle back and forth on my opinion about them.
I really don't like the whole furry culture much at all.

Sup /bjd/. I've got absolutely no experience with these things, and probably never will as simply put I don't have the money or space to be buying hyper-expensive massive dolls (as much as I'd love to). That said, BJDs have always intrigued me so I thought I'd ask a few questions.

1: Do good 1:12/6" dolls exist? I know there's the little chibi-type things but most "normal" dolls I've seen seem to be 1:6 or even bigger (some going up to 1:3 or something crazy).
2: How do BJD joints work? It's obviously not just friction as the "balls" aren't encapsulated enough by the body parts for that. Judging by the slots in the balls I assume they're held together with wire or something?
3: What are BJDs made of? I always assumed they were just regular plastic but I seem to recall reading somewhere that they're made out of some kind of resin.
4: Do non-crap "affordable" BJDs exist, or is there no choice but to pay £300 a doll if you don't want complete garbage? I know you have to paint/make-up most dolls out-of-the-box and professionally finished dolls go for RIDICULOUS sums of money.

Sorry for my newfag questions, dolls are just something I've always found interesting.
>>
>>5787659
1. I'm sure there are but I don't like dolls that small so I pay no attention.
2. They are hollow pieces held together with elastic. As a result they can be completely disassembled and restrung.
3. Resin which I would describe as a plastic that looks like porcelain but with none of the cons.
4. You get what you pay for mate. You can buy them as cheap as $120 USD but those are shitty dolls and even then they need eyes, wigs, painted makeup, shoes, clothes, accessories, etc etc etc. When I put money aside for a new complete doll I allot a minimum of $1000 AUD for everything. (Or I did before AUD tanked) It's a real slippery slope so don't get into dolls if you're pinching pennies.

I'm glad to see a newfriend, feel free to ask if you have any more questions. We also have a guide up top but I know it's more for people who already have a background knowledge of BJDs.

>>
>>5787659
1. There are, but they aren't as plentiful as 1:4 or 1:3. They look like well-jointed, prettier, very pose-able Barbies, kind of. Fairyland, Dollmore, illusion Spirit, SOOM all make some.
>>
>>5787557

I'm kind of interested to see how shit plays out if mature anthro dolls get more popular. I've always really like anthro characters and all my favorite childhood movies starred them but actual furry culture is not my thing at all.

And I can second that some people were not okay with hujoo amie. I stopped posting mine on tumblr after I got a lot of anon hate about her.
>>

its one of the soom MD dolls, but i cant remember which one. i'll take a look around see if i can figure it out
>>

Were people on DoA like that? I didn't follow that release because Hujoo aren't my thing and neither are anthros but now I'm curious.
>>
>>5787688
Why the fuck is this marked as SCP?
I honestly don't envy the owner, this picture has been used so many times already (and weirdly edited and what not).
It's actually pretty difficult to find the original owner through Google, everything is full with Pinterest boards and other websites.

However, it's a SOOM Topaz, here's the source:

Hujoo amie isn't made if resin so she's off topic for for doa but I can't imagine there being any rudeness there since being nice is so heavily enforced.

I am triggered for some reason... Probably because being realistically posable is like my #1 most desired thing in a doll. After not looking like ass, obviously.

Not sure what you are trying to tell me.
Just don't get why someone would tell a person who's not into any anthros (as indicated by the "aren't my thing and neither are anthros") what anthro they should buy.
Anon doesn't like any anthros, not just Hujoos.

Didn't they crowdfund to get the recent server change and get an overwhelming response to the donations? It's kind of difficult to make that argument when the people did pay for it.

>>5787659
1. Elfdoll made some tinies in that size. I had a Catsy for a while and she was fun. Some artist dolls are going into that size as well. I've seen someone actually do a 1:24 (pic related)
2. Was covered very well by >>5787670
3. Usually resin or ABS plastic. Some porcelain, some may be bisque (though this is rare, and Volks uses bisque as a resin color, not actual bisque). The anime-styled Dollfie Dreams, SmartDoll, Azone and Obitsu are vinyl with an internal plastic skeleton.
4. They do, but usually you have to jump through hoops and order new artists' sculpts on Taobao (like the SIO2 company we've been foaming over) -- It's seriously like a treasure hunt.

>>5787688
It's a Soom Topaz, but Soom Odette is similar.

Do I get to decide how she lives her life now? After all, I kinda did pay for it. Maybe if everyone who contributed to it got together and voted, we could democratically force her to live in a way we feel deserving of her liver. That's fair, right?

Or did we donate, knowing what type of person she was, without explicit and enforceable promise of change?

basically her whole message was red flags

He barely has any stubble on the pictures though?
Really looks like freshly shaved with a few hours passed or a very dark haired man that just shaved, shouldn't it be a lot darker for this whole ~thunderstorm~ look?

Srsly, fuck her.
I mean, what does "have let me know he's not the kind of doll they care to paint" mean?
I bet these artists did their best to make her happy, but I bet they didn't act like he was the best thing since sliced bread.
Sorry honey, just because you love him does not mean every artist will lose their shit over him.

>>
>>5788334
i think she implied that they didnt want to paint him because of the sculpt. he's from a cheaper, not so great company. honestly i think they just told her that because if she came off as crazy to them as she did to me then they just blew her off with whatever excuse they could. i dont know why she'd go for sdink anyway, because she has never done facial hair. lynn raftis is actually good at that manly look, at least, so obviously she could do it, but this customer sounds like the type to never be satisfied.

honestly i've only done like maybe 2 dolls with any kind of stubble or facial hair, so why she'd think i'd be capable of doing what she wanted i have no idea

sdink actually has posted "dolls i will work on" lists in the past, where she says she is only interested in painting specific sculpts. i don't know if lyn has ever done anything like that because i haven't followed her painting career. when i as a nooblet i thought sdink was the best so i followed her livejournal and flickr and have seen these pics first hand
>>
>>5788361
But that's nothing unusual, I have such a list myself (every artist probably has).
One big reason taking face-up commissions is fun is that you get to see lots of different dolls, and sometimes getting to paint a certain sculpt is better than the money you get for doing so.
>>
>>5788404
adding: I know SDink made it as a list of "will only paint X", but I know artists who did the same.

If you don't already have this in your disclaimer, add 'right to refuse any commission for personal reasons and time constraints, please do not take it personally' kind of thing. Then refuse them because yes, those kind with their vague, rambling descriptions yet elaborate character stories are very hard to please.

I assume you have a form to fill out regarding terms, style, preferences, how many hanged allowed during progress etc.? If they can't give you enough specifics, how will you even know what they want?

Yes and easily made their funding goal withOUT anyone thinking it gives them the right to change or have a say about the rules. Why is it so hard to parse that thousands of people ARE happy enough with DoA (rules and all) to support it.

It's not like off-topic dolls can't appear in photos or stories, just not as the main focus. The board rules and on-topic guidelines are publicly available to see in full before you join as are the lists of banned and off-topic dolls. Mods encourage you to email with questions about dolls before you buy if anything is unclear. I think that is due diligence.

>>
>>5788866
How's the quality?
>>
>>5788893
First impression is that the clothes are quite decent, seam edges are overlocked. Zipper on the jacket (not pictured) is a bit big and the fabric for the 2nd T-shirt (also not pictured) is a bit on the thin side. Helmet appears to be made out of some kind of hard thick plastic with cloth wrapped around.

The accessories, excluding the necklace, are made of plastic but I guess that's to be expected.

Can we do favorite/least favorite doll youtubers or video types, keeping it civil and without any negative personal call-outs?
My favorite are BJD Addicts doll prompts and then the unrelated 'year end tags'.
My least favorite is anything recast related and people who just do continual low-resolution box openings.

No clue why >>5788793 lost their shit at you, but I just checked them out and damn...that looked really, really good.
They also don't have the usual puppet-cut mouth in most scenes, they barely move their mouth when they talk anyway, and the real dolls don't have them at all.
Can't believe this is only partly CGI and that these dolls actually exist and are used for the scenes.

The dolls are indeed customs and there are photos out there of them shown on conventions (pic related).
They are 1/3 size at least, so pretty big.
Here's a video of them on a convention:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWs5AyfzuEs

Their faces are pretty basic though and look much like the cheaper ones you can get from lots of chinese companies (ex. http://www.acbjd.com/telesthesia-dragon-event-dragon-70cm-c-525_56.html).

Hope that helped a little anon, sorry for the other one being so rude.

From a practical standpoint, even though the tail has all those articulations, meaning it should be highly poseable, wouldn't the change in the center of gravity and the tail weight make the doll fall back with the tail in most raised positions?

Why are you jumping to conclusions, exactly? There are any number of reasons why a person wouldn't even have a DOA account to begin with. But since I need to justify myself for wanting to post here instead:

>Banned
I do not have a DOA account to be banned on.

>Shopping for a recast
I don't own any resin dolls, and while I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for not having known that, why exactly would I bother dressing up a recast in custom outfits that could easily climb up to three figures? People who buy recasts generally are people who cannot afford dolls, let alone clothes for said dolls that cost more than the clothes on their own backs.

>Lazy
Again, I don't have a DOA account. It's a forum made specifically for resin dolls, which I do not own. The forum I frequent has its own marketplace, but it's rather inactive.

To gain access in the marketplace in DOA, the last time I checked, your account needed to be of a certain age and you needed to have a certain number of posts. That would be my last resort. However, it would save me a lot more time and effort if I could receive recommendations by people who have custom ordered clothing for their dolls before, or even come into direct contact with a seamstress through this board.

As a last note, I own a vinyl doll.
>>
How do you all store your dolls? I'm thinking about getting some shelves but not sure how i should set them up. I have about 10 SD sized dolls for reference.
>>
>>5791704
If it ain't strung and its not an azone, dollfie dream, or hujoo it really belongs in the fashion doll thread.
>>
>>5791841
For wooden free hanging shelves I'd recommend them having at least 2' clearance if not more unless you plan to display them sitting. It's tricky with bookshelves because the pre-drilled holes might mean you having two overly spacious areas or one of a good height and one much more cramped. Detolf can be used too if you only put in the middle shelf. You'll probably need at least two unless you want to be like elevator-anon. You can fit 4-5 per detolf probably depending on how elaborate their outfits are.
>>
>>5791704
I have one anon. It's meant to look like a bjd but the "joints" are mostly decorative and hide standard hinge joints.
>>
>>5791860
Also I personally prefer Detolf, my dolls are dressed pretty fancy and the glass keeps them from getting any dust or random flying dirt/paint/sewing debris on them. My top choice would be a set of vintage glass front curio cabinets like my grandma has for her antique dolls (especially because they often have locks) but that's a lot of money and floor space.
>>
>>5791876
Same anon, for a second I actually thought I wrote that (minus the grandma part).

>>5791841
My dolls are all SD/70cm and stored mostly in Detolfs, since they have pretty big outfits and I like them to be visible.
There still can get a little dust in, but it's okay.
I also put them on cubes to get this "museum" look and get extra space for their props.
I also have two Billy cabinets with glass doors.
Would post a pic, but...the usual "can't risk that my customers see me here posting" problem.

One Detolf can hold four SDs (two top, two bottom).
For MSDs they are not that suitable in my opinion.
They are a few cm too big to keep all shelves in, but there is a lot of space between their heads and the top that can't be used.
Like, at least 1/3 of the space can't be used (if not more).
A Billy can hold four SDs at the top, four at the bottom (when each of them has a big wooden stand).
You can probably cram in more without stands.
>>
So, why exactly are bjd different from regular dolls? Is there something about the fact it's done through strings? I used to think that it was kind of silly to get one because you'd have to replace the string and the like, but I guess its part of the charm?
Like, BJD seems to be a toy that elevates playing with it to caring for it, and i don't mean that in the creepy child way. It seems that the maintenance and care that comes with owning a BJD is part of the satisfaction and enjoyment from them, and with that extra step needed from a normal hinge toy comes this more refined layer of quality?

I could be way off, but thats what it seems like. Would love to get one once I find myself a steady situation.
>>
>>5792058
The difference is the ability to customize.

Regular dolls generally cannot:
change their wig/hair color/length
change hand/ hand pose
change head sculpt
change face make up
change eyes/color and appearance
change feet/high heel feet
etc...

That level in customization is not found even in $200 - 1/6 scale hot toys figure/doll. And clearly won't be found on a $40 barbie, or "regular doll".

As far as maintenance, its about as much maintenance as a $40 barbie - that is if you handle the $700 BJD the way.

All this BJD extra care and maintenance is to avoid damage.

But, nobody cares about damage on a $40 doll! Leave it out to the sun! Drop it in water and mud! Pull and bend the joints! Get tea all over her in a tea party!

You could do the same to a $700 BJD. There! No maintenance required!

>>5792058
The actual maintenance/caring part isn't even that big.
Don't put them into the sun, no oil stuff, don't do anything with them you wouldn't do with a laptop or smartphone either.

It's the customizing part, no doubt.
On top of that they are not mass-made and you have a shitton of different companies to choose from who all make the same kind of product.
Don't like a certain look?
Buy from a different company, still get a BJD.

The only other dolls that come pretty much bare and need to be customized are Reborns, all other dolls are "forced" into their custom state.
Like Blythe, Monster High and the like.
Groove now made the step with Pullip to easier customs with their MIO kits, but they started out as finished dolls too.
Pullips are probably community-wise still the closest.

BJDs however are supposed to be customized.
You can always buy them blank, clothes and all the other stuff are usually not included.
Default and full-sets aren't really interesting to most BJD owners.
It's probably the only doll community in which customs are rarely bought.
Yes, people send out their dolls to be painted by others, but they buy the service and let their doll painted the way they want it to.
In most other doll communities you have a couple customizer and a shitload of people who just buy finished customs to put into their cabinets or buy the factory finished dolls.

Honestly, tried so many different dolls but BJDs are still my fav.
You can do so much neat stuff with them, you have lots of options, there are a crazy amount of creative customizers...makes me forget how much the community sometimes sucks and how much has changed due to the whole recast bullshit.

>>5792231
Adding:

I know this sounds silly because the base price of BJDs is so expensive, but I always crazily felt out of place in other communities because I felt like I did not spend enough money.
I have lots of BJDs, all from more expensive companies, with custom clothes, angora wigs and so on.
I have lots of customers and earn good money with my commissions.
I never felt out of place, neither when I started nor nowadays.

But in every other doll community?
You clearly feel it with Blythe, and I felt it way too much with Dollfie Dream, but money makes an even bigger difference there.
Dollfie Dreams are often limited, their aftermarket prices are hefty and you know there is a difference between having some self-painted DDH-06 at home and having Sasara, Beatrix, Miku, Yuki Morikawa and co. at home.
With Blythe it were the customs.
Stock Blythe, Fake Blythe, who cares.
It's all about owning certain customs.
They are communities where buying some priced custom or expensive limited matters more than creating something great.
For someone who's too much into customizing that's zero fun.
I prefer a community with creative people who do lots of stuff themselves over communities where people gush at each other how much money they can spend.
>>
>>5792269
Out of curiosity how hard is it to get into customizing?

I have years of experience with model kits, hand painting miniatures(I won a bronze Demon once), etc, Even some sewing skills. Is there any kind of cross over?
>>
>>5792295
For about $60-70 you could get a blank head and some supplies. See if you can apply make-up to a blank head, and like what you made. Lots of tutorial videos you can check out.
>>
>>5792295
Head to Alice's Collection, they sell Akagi Doll heads for 25$.
They are 1/3 size, made of resin and still look somewhat decent.

Except for the sealant you can get pretty much anything you need in a well sorted craft store.
Pastels for blushing, acrylic paint or watercolor pencils for line work, gloss, some brushes.
If you don't want to get MSC as sealer right away just get a can of Purity Seal from a local Games Workshop.

And then read up tutorials.
We don't work with primers (as in, the usual gray or white stuff that is often used as base for miniatures), just the sealant.
Also no washes and the like, doll faces are painted more delicately.
>>
>>5792327
Adding: painting dolls means lots of details.
The faces are as bare as it gets and you need to paint single lashes and eyebrow hairs.
You need to fake depth through blushing (like contouring with make-up) too.

I will pick some tutorials tomorrow, am on mobile right now.
Stay away from ebay and so called “practice heads“, they are all bootlegs/recasts.

>>5792543
ThunderBIRDS? Like, the old British show, not the Chinese thing discussed up thread? Anon, you're going to have a bad time if you expect a bjd to be useable as a marionette. They're heavier, weighted in the wrong places, and have tighter fitted joints meant for holding poses. Marionettes need to have weight in their core and hands/feet and be lighter in the limbs, have a different stringing system, and very loose joints for movement.

You might have a better time getting actual marionettes and using them as bases to customize to your liking. By all means use bjd tutorials to make them look similar. But honestly I think you're going to be disappointed if you drop a couple hundred into a bjd and find its not what you want.

It's not only the search engine, but Tumblr sucks because the majority of good stuff there is reposted.
The OC on Tumblr is garbage or at best mediocre, all the really good things are either from other websites or at least crossposted (and thus can be found elsewhere, were searching also works better).

Instead you need to check the websites where people actually post their own works, like Flickr.
Honestly Switch anon, you are either blind or only browse in garbage places, because Flickr is full with gorgeous Switch dolls.
>>
>>5794621
I mostly look through the top pics of websites since I don't have much time and unfortunately that means dealing with "popular" fad owners. I will for sure switch (ahahahahaha) to Flickr from now on, thanks anons

>>5795049
I also was mostly referring to owners that mostly have switch dolls, like the examples I gave. Since usually people own 1 or maybe 2 and the rest of the gallery is other sculpts. So I'm kinda being a picky bitch. Thanks though.

I know /toy/ is very against recasts for moral reasons but I have to ask.
Does it make me a terrible person if I want to buy a second hand recast for practicing faceups as well as sewing clothes? I have no desire to show off a non-legit doll but I don't want to risk damage to any legit ones either.

Honestly, resin dolls are not delicate flowers. Yes, they are not as sturdy as other materials but I highly doubt you are going to break your own doll when sewing clothes unless you have butter fingers, in which case what are you doing sewing. also recast sizes are smaller than legit, so it would help you practice but you'll have to start over with patterns when working on legits. Don't be a dumbass like MD.

Yeah I noticed 4chan changed a lot in the last few years in the age of general threads. I remember trying to start an image dump on /m/ for gunpla, and I got people angry at me. It wasn't even in the general just a separate thread. Just, what.
>>
>>5796230
Generals are not generals, they're actually containment threads so popular/contentious/recurring subjects don't crowd out other stuff. And there was a serial image spammer in gunpla threads that caused some paranoia about image dumping. He still posts on /m/ and /toy/ every once in a while.

Christ, why do people always come up with "I don't want to damage a legit!!!!1"?
For years everybody learned painting face-ups and sewing on legit dolls.
Most of them came out of it just fine.
The ones that didn't were owned by morons who were a) too lazy to read a tutorial b) dumb as fuck and c) did weird shit with their doll others had told them not to do.

A legit doll will be fine anon, believe me.
You just need to read up a little and don't do things with it you aren't supposed to do with anyway.

>for no real reason

Hmm let's see, Elfgutz is a militant vegan who reblogs factually untrue propaganda. She has flipped out multiple times because people were 'copying' her fugly dolls. Her dolls are legitimatly gross looking, and I don't mean their style I mean they look actually greasy like >>5795941 I want you to fucking look at that and tell me that's clean skillfull faceup and mod work. She attracts people who know nothing scene kids to the hobby who then flip out over doll prices and contribute the ugly cheap doll problem.

Those are all valid reasons to dislike elfgutz and her gross dolls anon.
>>
>>5796559
>>5796568
>>5796687

And my point has been proven. A majority of the BJD community is composed of children who simply can't accept that there exists a person who possesses unapologetic cander, whereas 99% of them don't have the face to even speak openly about what they think of Elfgutz. Thus, anonymous hate, and her name even having been banned from certain confession blogs.

>>5796434
Her dolls aren't that bad honestly. Whether or not they're to your liking is purely subjective. It seems pretty fucked up that in a community that is supposed to encourage creativity, her dolls are being used against her as to why she's such an allegedly such a shitty person. Then again when your argument is mainly composed of:

>>5796568
"She acts like a cunt"
"her dolls look like absolute shit"

>>5796687
"She has flipped out multiple times because people were 'copying' her fugly dolls"

>She acts like a cunt
This is really the only reason anyone needs to dislike her.

I have on several occasion on tumblr told her what I think of her innacurate vegan bullshit and she has blocked me. Seems like she's the childish one in that situation. In fact she has a tendency to block anyone who criticizes her in any way.

And if we as a thread can constantly shit on kayke lack of sculpting skills when can critisize her bad mods and gooey face ups.

>It seems pretty fucked up that in a community that is supposed to encourage creativity, her dolls are being used against her as to why she's such an allegedly such a shitty person.

This hobby has never claimed to be a hug box. Sure it encourages creativity but if you post stuff that is considered gross looking by the majority of doll peeps expect to hear about it.

>You're bound to start grasping at straws eventually.

She has flipped out on people for alleged copying and thinks she invented the glitter gore asthetic. It's not grasping at straws if its fucking true.
>>
>>5796868
>Her dolls aren't that bad honestly.

What?
Crusty, badly painted. Barely sanded mods.
Messy looking
She can't paint for shit and probably never looked at a tutorial either.

>>5796868
>It seems pretty fucked up that in a community that is supposed to encourage creativity, her dolls are being used against her as to why she's such an allegedly such a shitty person

Naw.
She's not a shitty person because her dolls look bad.
Sure, I think they look fucking horrible, but that's not the reason I dislike her.
Lots of people have ugly dolls and are still fine.

I dislike her because of her behaviour (being a rude bitch, constant whining about people "copying" her despite all her dolls looking like shit she has seen on Tumblr and co.), the fact she pulled so many people into the hobby who have no clue and "cosplay" bjds etc.
She did nothing good for the hobby, and unlike others in the same position she isn't even nice or friendly enough to even that out.
She's a rude person who thinks too much of herself with badly customized dolls (not even aesthetically, her stuff is badly made).

>elfgutz detected

Goodness, someone who isn't part of your circlejerk puts you in your place, so they have to be Elfgutz, right? Astute observation.

You seem to be missing the point of my post. Even the most harmless and talented of artists will get shit upon. It's inevitable. But it IS grasping at straws when an individual is completely alienated from the community and the most you have to show for it is she's a cunt, she's vegan, her dolls are ugly, and she whines about people copying her. This has become less about her dolls, and more about hating her being a trend. Here's a little eye opener for you:

There is nothing wrong with blocking people who bother or harass you, especially if it's detrimental to your mental health.

And that is the core issue with this topic that people seem to forget. By all means, you have every right to dislike her. But at the very least, TRY to have a valid reason, and don't get your knickers in a knot when the person you backed up against the wall starts retaliating.

>>5796968
I fail to see how her having "pulled people into this hobby" is her fault, let alone how she's supposed to "even it out". She's made numerous apologetic posts, but outside of that, there's not much else she can do. I doubt Elfgutz was the one who even started the "BJD cosplay" trends to begin with, as you seem to be implying. I'll give you points though, you at least tried to validate your reason for condemning her. But tossing out vague solutions to a problem she had no control over doesn't really help your argument.
>>
>>5796984

I literally gave valid reasons for disliking her and you dismissed them all.

Her being an unpleasant person online is a valid reason. Her being an militant vegan who spreads incorrect information and makes moral judgements based on whether or not you follow her ideology is another.

>completely alienated from the community
Since fucking when? She clearly has supporters and a rabid fan base willing to defend her. You yourself are evidence of that.

>There is nothing wrong with blocking people who bother or harass you, especially if it's detrimental to your mental health.

Except when you use it to insulate yourself from any valid criticism.

>But at the very least, TRY to have a valid reason, and don't get your knickers in a knot when the person you backed up against the wall starts retaliating.

'Backed against the wall' really? If you can't handle any dissenting opinions on elfgutz I suggest you head back to tumblr.
>>
>>5797000
I haven't dismissed your reasons for disliking her. Let me put this in layman's terms:

Whether or not people hate her /IS NOT/ the problem. However, when the scorn from a community for /DOLLS/ blows up to the extent that is has against /ONE USER/ for seemingly benign reasons, THEN it is a problem.

The vegan issue is another topic altogether, and I won't go on to speak about it too much because: 1, I'm not a vegan. 2, I don't agree with vegan extremist beliefs, and 3: When the issue of Elfgutz going apeshit over cow's milk arose, she was BOMBARDED with anonymous hate mail to the point where she asked people to stop sending her those things on her doll blog, and when they didn't, she had to post an apology to try to get people off her back. For the sake of clarification, because I have a feeling this might be taken out of context, this isn't supposed to serve as an example for why her actions should be excused. Rather, it serves as an example of the witch-hunting mindset her "haters", if you will, harbor towards her.

>completely alienated from the community
I refer to my earlier statement about her name having to be blocked on some doll confession blogs. There will always be exceptions, but the majority dictates that a large part of the community had some problem with her, for reasons x, y, or z. When 99% of this hatred stems from anonymous users, including these threads, is it any wonder why she doesn't participate in the community more often? The answer is no.

>except when you use it to insulate yourself from any valid criticism

I'd like to see what your definition of "valid criticism" implies, because I've yet to see any from any of you.

>if you can't handle any dissenting opinions on Elfgutz I suggest you head back to tumblr

I like how you saved your weakest argument for last. Clearly I can handle them if I'm continuing this discussion, and "go back to tumblr" is babby's first scapegoat for "you made me mad but I don't know how to respond".
>>
>>5797062
But she IS partly at fault for the way the community reacted towards her.
As said, there are lots of people with fugly looking dolls, in many cases worse looking than hers, that nobody gives a single fuck about.
Do you really think that she is somehow an exception without her being, at least partly, the cause of that?

She brought this upon herself because she was rude, unfriendly and often times just downright horrible to others.
Because she kept on talking about others and attacking them on how they "copied" her.
>>
>>5797062
See >>5797102

Your acting like the community just decided to dislike her and her terrible attitude and behavior came later when the reverse was true. Nobody was shitty to elfgutz until she started attacking people for 'copying' her style.

And yeah even if her vegan extremism is unrelated to dolls it's still a turn off for the doll community because she posts that shit on her main doll blog. FTF catches hate for being a racist pos and chronic shit poster. Just because that isn't really doll related doesn't make him any less of a pariah among doll owners. The same applies to elfgutz.
>>
>>5797102
>>5797117
I don't excuse her actions. In the same way I've seen people overreacting to the things she does, I've seen her overreacting to fairly harmless comments from others. It obviously goes both ways. But the drama and the issues surrounding her belie the severity of the situation, especially when she's much more subdued now in that regard. Please don't misinterpret my statements, because it warps the point I'm attempting to carry across.

NO ONE is exempt from the consequences of their actions, but let bygones be bygones. That's what I think.
>>
>>5797062
God damn anon, you sure know a shit ton of crap about her. If you like the bitch why does it matter what other people think, you are just coming off as a butt hurt fan.

People don't like her because she is an asshole. She is stupidly childish, in not a good way. Is super rude to people even if they are being nice. She harassed people and bully them for "copying her" and will shit talk you non stop if you disagree with her even if you are being polite. If that's not good enough reasons for you then stop sucking her dick, because it obviously fucking you up.

She doesn't just magically get a clean rep by posting 'I was just trolling now I'm gonna be real' she has to earn that shit.
>>

Except she does that. With a lot of people and has made people quit the hobby because of her harassment and her minions doing the same.

But is OK because she was joking guys. Just trolling.
>>
>>5797172
It's not, and that should have been obvious as I've never even referred to that once in the entire scope of this argument. No one else has, either. "I was just trolling", whether or not it's true, is as credible an excuse for past behaviors as "I was only pretending to be stupid".

>>5797149
It's not an issue of liking her or not liking her at all. You people must be really fucking dense to not be able to grasp the point of this discussion even after watering it down for you as much as possible, and even after REPEATEDLY, not just once, stating that I'm not attempting to justify her actions or her behavior. If you put as much effort into comprehending what you read as you do in sounding like an edgy and try-hard tomboy, then maybe your response would have a leg to stand on.

Hold up, hold up bitch.

> is the BJD community's public enemy number 1, for no real reason either than some people think she's mean and Tumblr is offended by everything

This was you right?

So you said there was no real reason except people think she is mean and because is a fad in tumblr.

Except people gave you MULTIPLE reasons as to why they don't like her and all of them are VERY GOOD reasons, unless bullying and making people quit the hobby because you put glitter on your doll is a bad reason for you. In which case I guess she has to murder someone for your to think there is a REAL reason for people to dislike her.

> whereas 99% of them don't have the face to even speak openly about what they think of Elfgutz

But people already said they did, and she blocked them. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAS and she blocks them or deletes their comments. I have done it, I'm blocked.

>Her dolls aren't that bad honestly

That depends on personal taste and if you like dolls with herpes on their mouth.

>It seems pretty fucked up that in a community that is supposed to encourage creativity, her dolls are being used against her as to why she's such an allegedly such a shitty person.

TONS OF PEOPLE have dolls like her, and NONE OF THEM GET SHIT. You know why anon? because they are not assholes THAT BULLY OTHER OWNERS FOR "COPYING" THEM.

Most of her dolls are not well liked because her dolls are linked to her. It is not her dolls being used against her, is her being used against her dolls because of how shitty she fucking is. You human waste. No one would give a fuck about her dolls if it wasn't because they belong to such a shitty, attention whore. She is cancerous to her own hobby because of her personality and who she is as a person, and she has LINKED THE TWO TOGETHER. She has done this HERSELF.
>>
> But it IS grasping at straws when an individual is completely alienated from the community and the most you have to show for it is she's a cunt, she's vegan, her dolls are ugly, and she whines about people copying her.

She alienated herself when she started to BULLY PEOPLE and literally make people quit the hobby. She alienated herself when she started a witch hunt to see who was copying her. She has done ALL OF THIS HERSELF, with the HELP OF NO ONE!

>This has become less about her dolls, and more about hating her being a trend. Here's a little eye opener for you:

SHE. DID. THIS. HERSELF. YOU. DUMB. FUCK.

>But at the very least, TRY to have a valid reason, and don't get your knickers in a knot when the person you backed up against the wall starts retaliating.

EXCEPT, everyone has good reasons to dislike her, but for you THEY ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH REASONS. Because according to you, you should dislike her only because of her dolls, otherwise it makes no sense. Okay.

>Whether or not people hate her /IS NOT/ the problem. However, when the scorn from a community for /DOLLS/ blows up to the extent that is has against /ONE USER/ for seemingly benign reasons, THEN it is a problem

This happens in every community, you dumb fuck. Reputation and your work come hand in hand. Who you are as a person will always affect the view other people have about you and will also affect the view people have about your work. Is like you live in a cave.

>stating that I'm not attempting to justify her actions or her behavior.

No one is saying you are, we are just saying you are a moron. And are constantly going in circles after people give you the "reasons" you first asked for, and then were like nah nah, that's not good enough, THIS IS ABOUT DOLLS GUYS!
>>
>She apologized

No she didn't. She made a general post saying she was sorry. She didn't apologize to the people she hurt, had her bitches send to harass or the people that quit because of her. She didn't apologize to them at all. She didn't make amends, she didn't do SHIT.

If she was to actually SHOW and DO something to show that she has changed then I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and I wouldn't have problems with it. Except she hasn't done any of this shit. So no, fuck her and fuck you.
>>

>This was you, right?

It was me. I didnt think this would unfold into such a debacle and I wasn't going to write that anon an essay on Elfgutz's innocence, as everyone seems to think I'm doing, when it was unprovoked.

Also, making people quit the hobby? This is legitimately the first time I've heard of that and I'd like you to elaborate if you expect me to take that point into consideration, because as far as I've heard, and as far as everyone's arguments have highlighted thus far, the most she's done is harassed people on copying her dolls- which, as a side note, has happened before, in case you all forgot. Does it excuse harassment? No. But before you go on about how she harassed people in the past again, I invite you to reread my previous posts regarding the issue of her posting about veganism on her doll blog.

>People already said they did

Like two people at most? By the way: Criticism =/= "Your dolls are fucking ugly". You might want to review the comments and attitude of your peers before you try to paint them as upstanding and well-meaning individuals. The only type of critique on her dolls that has been elaborated on in this ENTIRE thread was >>5796962 This clown. And forgive me if you think I'm wrong, but if an individual with that attitude approaches you with that type of unwanted "criticism", don't you have every right to block them?

>>5797275
"Fuck her and fuck you! You dumb fuck! You dumb fuck!"

Ah yes, very convincing arguments on your behalf, anon. Everyone knows you can't make a point without throwing a tantrum beforehand.

Asides from spouting out insults at me, which seems to be the highlight of everything you have to say, you keep insisting that she is a huge bully and she does nothing to fix it. Before you pop a vessel let me add this little disclaimer for you: I am not excusing anything she's done. Reread that again, because you seem to keep missing that point. I am not excusing her bullying, her harassment, and if she really did drive other individuals to drop out of the hobby (I don't know either way myself so I will refrain from commenting on that) that is also inexcusable.

But according to you, when everyone else tries doing the same to her, it's okay, right? Because she's a bitch, right? For God's sake, think before you hit the submit button.

As someone new to the hobby (got my first doll in December) they're actually more durable than I expected so far. I bought mine to practice sewing clothes on; no stain issues yet but I have magic erasers ready for when/if it happens.

Honestly there's no reason to go the recast route. There's lots of companies that are doing summer events right now that marks down prices (check dealers like Alice Collections and Junkyspot), and there's always cheap companies like Resinsoul and Mirodoll that could fit your budget. You can always look into doll hybirds if you want a certain head sculpt but want a cheaper body, not a bad way to save money either.

Plus it takes the fun out of it not being able to show off your work if you get a recast, and there seems to be a lot of backlash if you do show off a recast. Just look around and see what's available, it's summer event time so it's the prefect time to look!

Yeah, remember kiddos. Don't do to people what they have done to other people, even if they did it for no reason except their own satisfaction and selfish needs. Because that is mean and morally wrong. Even if you are not doing half of what they have done or even close to what they still do and instead are just pushing this person away for being cancerous to something that is part of your life.

Remember well.

Also wash your hands after and before eating.

Yeah, I think I might just have to check and follow multiple-owners. I'm just very into Switch right now because I have one of them coming soon, and looking at other owner ideas helps me figure out what faceup works best for them. That way I don't screw up so bad in the first try.

If that's not what you're saying then maybe you should just spell it out for us because I sure didn't get anything else out of all that.

How hard is it to get into modding?
Good modding and repair jobs make my heart flutter. I love the creativity and the passion, the time and effort people put into loved dolls.
I'm a bit of a clutz and not really good at anything, so I'm taking to /toy/ hoping I can get honest opinions and advice on heavy customization instead of just asspats or reassurance.
Also feel free to most good and bad mods to serve your statements.
>>
>>5797519
Getting into it is easy.
Buy doll parts, buy materials (sandpaper, scalpel, dremel, apoxy), modify doll pieces.

The difficult parts are learning to sculpt, how to use your tools and to stick to a project
Modding a doll, even just simple restoring (like sanding a scratched surface) can be very tedious and exhausting.
Too many people start a mod and either give up half-way or think they are finished while they should probably sand a few hours more.

Do you have something in mind?
Do you want to do artsy mods (like Bluoxyde), weird mods (like Dr. Krow), gore mods (like onegreyelephant) or just general simple mods and restoring of damaged dolls?
If it's the latter check Mandarake, they often have old “junk“ Volks for cheap.

It isn't what I meant at all and I apologize for it being taken as such, despite my many efforts and repeated incantations of "what she did wasn't okay and I'm not saying it was". All I was trying to say was that the amount of shit she gets seems disproportionate to what she actually did, in my opinion, and instead of being caught up on shit she doesn't do anymore, maybe it would be better to move on. Then again, like I said earlier, I wasn't around long enough to see if she really did bully anyone out of the hobby. And while it would be nice if she did apologize as others were saying before, even if she did, would anyone even care, or would it just stir up even more bullshit?

It really sucks that there's so much animosity and tension amongst everyone over something as stupid as this. I get it, the community wasn't meant to be a hug box, whatever. But at this point it seems like it's the exact opposite. Like some elitist club where everyone has to be at each other's throats, and I know I'm not the only one who gets that impression. I never meant to piss people off with what I was saying.

So I know /bjd/ is generally against recast dolls, but I'm curious what your stance is on recast action figures/statuettes, particularly ones that are no longer being produced.

Another thread on /toy/ is discussing recasting an old, extremely rare figure that an anon on there recently acquired, and I'm tempted as fuck to get it once they go through with it, because I would likely never be able to get this thing otherwise.

The figure's been out of production for six years, and I don't think the company even exists anymore.

I'm against recast dolls, but somehow I don't feel as bad about the idea of doing this. Thoughts?

See, I kinda flop on this. I am generally against recasts, but I get tempted when it comes to things sort of like this.

Sort of, but not really related:
>Get a Volks FCS Fairy mold from Y!JA
>Comes with bland human ears because it was a coordinate model
>Want elf ears
>Cat ears for sale, cat ears errywhere
>No fairy molds in the VolksUSA FCS (there are literally only five sculpts to choose from)
>Cannot find updated source on Tenshi no Sumika/Sato FCS molds

I just want ears. My sculpting skills are hilariously bad. I really don't want to do my own FCS order through a proxy just to get some fucking ears. Y!JA sometimes has a junk head, but it usually shows up after I've made a big purchase.
Shit, I'm not even sure the ears are recasted, but I'm tempted to buy them if they are.

See Antis woukd telk you to just 'get gud' at sculpting or commission them made but really that woukd look like shit and they know it. I think in your case buying recast ears woukd be justified.

I also think it's fine to buy a doll in an unofficial skin tone of the company refuses to cast on that color. People say to just dye a ws doll but that looks bad no matter even you can get it and painting a doll from head to toe makes it basically un handle able.

>>
>>5798721
Correct. I like 'em, but they're not mine. I don't really post my own dolls.
>>
>>5798601
Generally I think recasts are bad in the bjd community cuz the artists/makers are literally begging people not to buy the recasts because they're losing money, sculptors are leaving their jobs, it's sowing distrust in the secondary market, and that a lot of recast dolls aren't even of rare dolls but rather current-made dolls that you could buy direct from the company.

I genuinely can't think of any other toy where making a recast of it would be the exact same process as it was originally made. BJDs are hand casted, or at least, hand casting results in a super close result to the original doll, unlike a resin recast of a plastic/vinyl toy.

The fact is, recasts of other toys don't actively damage/harm the respective community in the same way that recasts harm the BJD community because the BJD community is a lot smaller and insular.

Plus I can't really think of a toy community that's so dependant on the dolls being blank/unfinished like BJDs are. Even stuff like MH knock offs or Vintage Barbie clones, even if the material is different, the things like paint and packaging is more important than a BJD coming with a factory face up and shit.

So yeah, I generally don't give a shit about knock offs and recasts as a whole, but you can clearly see how BJD recasts do negatively affect the BJD industry and community as a whole in comparison to any other toy knock off affecting the sales of legit products in their communities.

So my friend keeps buying me dolls, doll parts, and other expensive toys as gifts, and while I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth, it's starting to make me pretty uncomfortable, and I feel insanely obligated to buy them expensive shit to make up for it.

At one point they bought me a head I'd been loosely planning to buy for over a year, but was in literally ZERO hurry to get because it's a basic, and I was waiting to see if anyone would list the hybrid I was going to make with it (it's a common hybrid), and literally days after they gave it to me, the hybrid popped up on the secondhand market, but I couldn't get it because I'd be stuck with this extra head. Prior to that, someone had listed the exact hybrid somewhere else, but I knew they had already purchased the head, so I couldn't get it. Now I have to pay more for the new body than I would have had to for either of those hybrids because I "put off getting the head for so long," as they put it.

It almost felt like they bought it because they were annoyed I hadn't after planning to for so long, so they just went for it. They even went so far as to "joke" that they "might wind up getting the body" for me because of how long I put the whole thing off, and like....they laughed when the said it, but it didn't seem like a "Haha I'm actually joking," laugh, but more like a "Goddamn, I'm gonna have to this whole thing myself, aren't I?" kind of laugh.

Part of me is okay with it because who doesn't love gifts and all, but part of me is crazy uncomfortable and wants them to stop because they almost feel kind of aggressive about it, and I feel like I have to buy them crazy expensive shit in return.

Ayy, speaking of SIO2, I just got an email from Stacy's Pink Ocean informing me that I'll have to choose between blue or white clothes instead of the original colors due to them starting to sell the doll later than in China. However, the pictures showing the new clothes colors featured the doll with a natural skin color instead of white. Is this the color we're going to get? This was going to be my first purchase with this hobby, but if she's not going to be white like in the pictures, I'm not really interested. There's something just less pretty about her overall with plain skin color.

>>
>>5800200
I like both, but with stylized face-ups I like the ones that are a little more dramatic (super long feathery lashes, colorful blushing, glitter) and detailed, not...standard Volks or LUTS face-up.

My own style is a mix of both.
I like the cleanliness of asian artists, but I like the more heavy and realistic blushing approach you see on realistic face-ups.
I am not a fan of crusty and messy eyelashes/eyebrows though and I am still not happy how most textured face-ups look like.
Currently working on a more subtle, less freckles-look for my own.

Also agree with other anon, depends on the head a little.
I do think though that most heads look good with a semi-realistic/realistic face-up, while only a certain type can look good with a very stylized and/or simple one.
Even on something like a big-ass Volks head a more realistic face-up can look interesting...the other way around it just seems like a total waste on a realistic face.

Nope.
Before I got an airbrush I did a few tests on a tan head (wanted to go for a mild ganguro look...don't ask), no matter what most of the white blushing disappears.
You can lighten up other pastels with it, but white itself pretty much vanishes.

What are you trying to do anon?

>>5802289
Seconding >>5802337, I first realized it with Xanthi and then of course more and more artists had to do it.
That spot often does look lighter, both on humans and dolls, but it's never a thick white line.

That shitty eyebrows are unfortunately very popular with the pencil crowd.
Why paint dozens of tiny hairs when you can just blush and paint five white lines?

Else...hmm, the "totally girly looking boy doll, tehee" trend sadly never died.
It just moved from goth dude with long black hair to abused weeaboo uke with glitter, blood and bruises.
Honestly prefered the ~*dark*~ goth guys compared to this attempt of making abuse look pretty.

Textured face-ups are also more popular than ever before.

Hmm, thinking about it, next to that glitter-abuse bullshit you currently have barely any big, visible trends.
Most releases are pretty boring because it's either old stuff just warmed up (i.e. Soom or more fantasy dolls from other companies) or the good ol' usual aesthetic (Volks and co.).
>>
>>5798864

i managed this on some tan heads by basically building up the white pastel with LOTS of layers of it. its do able but takes a long time and you need a high quality white pastel to do it too.

Sales like these are the reason why I'm terrified to buy clothes second hand and I have to bathe my dolls non-stop after I get them second hand.

Fucking nasty.
>>
>>5803071
Oh i know, but that's the justification afaik, them and the other companies that get recast the most believe that offering replacement parts will make them more vulnerable to being recast, when actually it just means more people would be free to hybrid, which seems to be what a solid amount of the hobby is more interested in.
>>
>>5803352
It also encourages recast purchasing. If i cant just straight up buy a head, i know i could buy a recasted head and not spend a fortune.

Hiya BJD thread! so I have 2 questions I want some opinions on,

1. I bought a doll for the first time in ages about 3 months back now and since getting her she's lierally sat in the box. I feel bad buying something so expensive without giving her any clothes and shit but everytime I think of getting her stuff I feel kinda like I should spend my money on more 'adult' things. This is the same for my other 2 dolls who have also suffered the same fate. You'd think I'd stop buying but I just....like the dolls and having them knowing they have all that potential hidden away if I want to invest more in them.

2. After seeing the pictured wig I really want a princess Serenity doll. I know Miku is a pretty popular doll so I guess character dolls is fine but I'm just not sure after I got her character 'done' what I'd do with her? Since I know exactly how she's going to look I don't mind forking out a couple hundred/thousand on her for the perfect ethereal look I tend to associate with her character ( plus I'm a huge SM fan ). Any sculpt suggestion?
>>
>>5804027
Just give up and sell your dolls to me anon this hobby isn't for you
>>
>>5804027
What about a DD Mirai with her sws? Then add the wig and some custom eyes to match. Mirai has an older anime look to her, imo
>>
>>5803912
wow shes beautiful
>>
>>5804027

Anon, don't do it.
Making a character doll can be pretty boring in the end, because it's like having a huge but super expensive action figure that can't really be changed, unless you don't mind the out of character look.
BJDs are all about customizing and changing things, but with character dolls your options are pretty narrow and it can be frustrating to do (especially when you can't find what you need to complete the look).

If you are already unable to take care of a doll because you feel bad for spending money on them, you will feel even worse when spending money on something you could have cheaper (because there's shitton of merchandise available for Sailor Moon).

So, before you tackle such a project get a grip and start enjoying the hobby itself before.
If you always just have "oh no, I should act like an adult!!1" in your head this won't ever work out.

This. You have to really be invested to make a character doll. If you're gonna lose interest after 6 months or a year, you'll never finish it.

Pic related are the best SM customs I've seen BTW.
>>
>>5804027
If I were you I'd find a doll that would be good for cosplaying the character you want, but then give her her own character as well. I notice there are lots of people whose dolls "cosplay" and I agree that its an awfully expensive investment if you don't ever plan to change anything.

Thanks for all the help and info.
Sorry to be a retard but how does one use Mandarake?
I'd really love to get a unoa to practice painting and modding since face plates aren't super expensive, but given their original price tag I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a lot of "junk" ones around.
>>
>>5805800
for 'junk' Unoas, Mandarake will be a bit of a ripoff. They tend to price stuff a good $100 more than it pops up elsewhere.

I'd use Dollyteria or Yahoo Japan auctions. I have personally bought three unoas from dollyteria for under $300 each. At Mandarake they're going to run more like $350 - $400. All my Dollyteria purchases have been just fine.

A new unoa b-grade from Unoalchemy runs $450 with shipping included and usually includes a crapton of extras.

The lowest I've ever seen a junk body go is about $150 on YJA, and it had a missing foot and cracks.
>>
>>5805800
For example: a Lusis for under $300:

http://closetchild-doll.ocnk.net/product/46617
>>
>>5805800
Also this weird Ange boy for a little over $300:

http://closetchild-doll.ocnk.net/product/46373
>>
>>5805800
This is the closest comparable Mandarake unoa. $350 base, plus your $40 or so in shipping. It's the exact same one UnoAlchemy sells without the extras:

>>
>>5805889
How do I order from closetchild? I've heard about them in the lolita community but never realized they sold other things. In addition, Lusis is actually my dream doll.

Ordering from closet-child/Dollyteria is a pain in the ass, at least it was when I ordered from them last year.
Manda has a proper working site in English, Dollyteria has not.
You can switch their main site to Google Translate English, but somehow that function was not available during the order process :/

>>5805800
No biggie, glad to help.
Mandarake is pretty straightforward.
Put stuff in cart, check-out.
Just make sure to read all their rules and the numerous texts they have on their website!
There are several Mandarake stores, indicated by a name underneath each listing.
You can't order from several stores at once and have it all shipped in one box.
But it's all explained on the website, just give it a few minutes and browse a while.

I agree with other anon though, Manda is not that great anymore for Unoas (or most things).
Yes, you can still get cheap damaged Volks there, but their prices got higher and higher since they realized that more international buyers buy from them because they are so much cheaper than normal hobby prices.
Better check Unoa Alchemy, they also sell B-Grade faceplates for cheap:
http://www.unoalchemy.com/
They only accept order by mail, but are very friendly and easy to work with.
>>
>>5807205
I ended up buying the Lusis from closetchild, has anyone in the US bought from them before that could tell me when I should be expecting her?
Thanks so much, /toy/.
>>
>>5807317
It generally takes about a week for them to pack it up and send it, but it's ems, so it comes really fast after that.
>>
>>5807205
I dunno, I've never had a problem ordering from Dollyteria. They have a whole page just on how to do international orders in English.

I'm struggling with getting lines to be thin enough and taper at the end, especially with short hairs. I think my brush strokes need help. I'm using flow aid (although it says to dilute it to 1:20 with water, but that's way more liquid than I need if I'm only doing one or two sets of eyebrows).
I have the same problem with eyelashes going too long, or if I do them short, they are thick blotches. Working with MSDs, if size matters.

I also can't figure out what materials people are using. For example, >>5798715 looks like acrylic and pastel? But it looks so different from say an Angell-Studio, so what do they use? Or how do they get such different results?

Although I hear that watercolor pencils are easier, the graininess and brassy colors are a turnoff, unless some kind anon can recommend a brand that's minimally grainy and uses a neutral gray or umber base for it's browns.
>>
>>5807447
i painted that venitu. my materials list is:

- mr super clear UV cut flat
- sennelier pastels
- derwent inktense water color pencils
- delta ceramcoat acrylic paint
- golden acrylic flow release + water to thin paints
- 20/0 script liner brushes (Loew Cornell La Corneille 7050 Series Script Liner specifically)
>>
>>5807447
also when you use the flow aid, what i do is just do a drop or two on your palette, then a few drops of water, then i stir it with a brush, and then just mix a drop of that into a drop of my paint.
>>
>>5807447
For me, getting fine lines is more about the brush than the paint (though the paint viscosity matters too). I have exactly one brush brand I like, and I have to use that brush for about six months before it's ratty enough for tiny lines.

I personally don't even dilute my flow aid (I use the one from Liquitex).
I just put a few drops on a plate, then I dip my brush into my paint (I use Mr. Hobby Aqueous Color, which is highly pigmented but feels very watery) and then dip it into the little flow aid pool.
Mix it and you are good to go.

For a while I mostly bought Pro Arte Connoisseur Series 100 brushes, but that got too expensive since I had to import them from the UK (can't get them in Germany).
I nowadays just use the Games Workshop brushes, which I need to replace more often but are at least easier to get.

Regarding different results when people use same materials: there is a big difference in handling these materials, and acrylic paint is not always the same just because it shares a type.
Not to mention how differently people layer, there are some people who paint the lines first and then blush too.

Pencils are unfortunately always grainy, no matter what.
I personally didn't thought they were easier to handle either, for me the brush always felt more natural, but it's of course less messy.

For me the most important is a mixture of brush shape (short, with a wide base but a very thin tip, basically a /\ shape) and paint viscosity.
I also paint in several layers, i.e. I first paint very light lashes, seal that, and then darken the base of the lashes.
That way the tip stays light.

Else it's really just practicing.
Making nice, fine lines is unfortunately something you really need to learn, no matter how much theory you know and tutorials you read.
Best is to learn painting lines on a headcap, again and again.
