For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

Do Jegans and Jesta count as GMs per the "For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name on the box" rule?
>>
>>5738161
Doesn't count per last thread. It's not just on the box, but the actual name.

How essential is lacquer thinner for Tamiya putty? I cheaped out at the hobby shop..

just sand it bro

Sometimes I like to have it be a little thinner for seam filling idk

It helps out a lot. Too much thinner turns it into primer though.

I prefer super-glue +baking soda for filling, Super glue's already water-thin, dries with no shrinkage and you can work on it immediately.

Micro Sol is for softening the decal, so you can get it to flatten around uneven surfaces.
Micro Set helps it to set and adhere better.

how is the astaroth HG?
>>
>>5738481
You could kitbash the old hg with the hguc ground type or maybe even the ez-8 or ezsr if you want some sort of custom or commander version.

The limbs are basically identical to the ground types and the only real mods are really either the legs or waist which basically just involve swapping the pegs which is fairly simple.

Hi. i have a question about lacquers paint. i read that if you thin MrHobby colors with Leveling thinner you have the same paint has Gaia notes or other Lacquers brand. is that true ? i don't want to put too much money right now in this type of paint. thanks.
>>
>>5738561
Its fucking garbage
>>
>>5738539
>I need to get a new one. I spilled lacquer cleaner in the bay, now I can't fold it up :(
Put foil on the bottom when you paint. Helps with clean up too.
>>
>>5738800
It's a synthetic acrylic lacquer. You can thin it with leveling thinner like Tamiya acrylic (also synthetic acrylic lacquer). You get better flow and better finishes but it probably won't be as durable as Gaia but strong enough since you should be putting topcoat on it.
>>
>>5738958
thanks. and it is the same process with Mrhobby aqueous by ading leveling thinner ?

I've never used that but google says it's a water based paint, it probably won't work with any strong solvent like Mr Leveling Thinner.

Get a small file and some 800 1000 1200 grit sandpapers. If you work slowly and steady with the file you can remove it with ease.

I'm going to be painting the kit. Its already been smoothed with 1000 grit. There's just a little bit of discoloration.

Ausfag here wanting to buy my first airbrush setup but I'm having a lot of trouble finding a suitable respirator. I know the Gunpla Guide states A2P3, but all I can find without breaking the bank are A1P2 cartridges.

This is basically all I can find:
http://www.shop3m.com.au/safety-protection/respirators/3m-spraying-respirator-kit-6251.html

Any Aussies or Eurofriends here that can offer some advice? Is A1P2 enough? I will mostly be using acrylics but do plan on using some lacquer based spray paints and top coats.

I'm a newbie who is starting airbrushing. I've bought Tamiya acrylics and their brand of thinner, X-20.

The Tamiya website says 2 paint:1 thinner works best, have you found that to be true?

As a side note, I live in a humid area and have flow aid, is it worth putting that into the mix?

Rule of thumb for pretty much any airbrushing is thin your paint to a milk like consistency.

I realized I posted this on /m/ instead of /toy/ earlier..

Finally got around to starting a project that I might enter for the group build, depending on if I can figure out how to do everything and somehow find a space to paint.

I'm pretty excited, this is my first time really doing something outside of just seam wielding and panel lining aside from that one GM Cannon I kind of gave up on for now a little after starting.

I haven't completely decided yet on what to do about the shoulders. I really like how the old Perfect Gundam shoulders look on it, but it leaves the shoulders and upper arm with no articulation at all, but I don't know any other feddie suits with big, blocky shoulders like that.

amazing, one of the top-5 best MGs with essentially no major issues. its very loyal to the original artwork and includes as many gimmicks and little known features of the design as possible, especially when you get the HWS add-on set.

>I can see on dalong it has a bigger backpack than the original, but it cause any balance issues?
maybe, but it comes with a stand and you can use the fuel tanks to support the back.

Figured I'd ask this here since it seems more relevant:

Where can I find 1/144 scale USMC/USN/US Army rondels/decals without breaking the bank? Just got pic related and the Gouf REVIVE from Gundam Planet and was wondering how they'd look done up in MUH MODERN MILITARY livery. Also because I tried free-handing with my Gundam Markers, and it was awful.

My google-fu is turning up straight shit and everywhere I looked has either decals for specific military craft or straight up zilch in the 1/144 scale.
>>
Hey i want to make some custom decal sheets. What kind do you use for printers?
>>
>>5744063
Easiest way would probably be buying a cheap plastic model aircraft. Some sort of 1/144 jet fighter would probably work best as a lot of them were upwards of 15m long, but a 1/72 model of a smaller plane might be easier to find while still providing appropriate sized decals.

Alternatively, try looking up some tutorials on painting this kind of stuff. I'm sure you could get some decent results with gundam markers, some masking tape, and a little know how.

Tamiya is an acrylic that can be thinned with either Alcohol or Lacquer thinner. They make their owner thinner of both types and you can use stuff like mr. color leveling thinner as well.
>>
>>5744413
Got it, thanks, but what is the point of using Tamiya as lacquer paint instead of regular lacquer paint? The lack of toxic fumes? Drying times?
>>
>>5744418
Easily available most places, cheap, can be stripped with windex, tamiya is good paint with nice colors in general.

No matter what if you are using lacquer thinner you are going to get bad fumes and it is going to dry insanely quick because that is due to the thinner and not the paint itself.
>>
>>5744427
>because that is due to the thinner and not the paint itself.
I thought the whole point was the paint itself (pigments), not the thinners. Well good to know then.
>>
Question, when it comes to Tamiya spray cans, is ts-34 camel yellow or ts-37 chrome yellow better suit gundam yellow, for vents and v-fins. I'm kinda in the mood to go for gold colors but it might not suit every suit.

I would've said regular yellow, actually.

Question

Just wondering if I am using Tamiya's lacquer can spray. Do i still need to prime a kit or just the pure spray do the job in term of durable paint?

I did some experiments using Tamiya's TS spray with Mr. Surface 1500.
For what I can tell, besides needing more number of coats without Mr. surfacer to cover the bare plastic color, when nail scratching, the end products durability is about the same.

What is you guys' experience on this?
Pic some what related to Gunpla/Plamo
>>
>>5744670
Anyone who tells you to not prime something is talking shit. It helps the paint bind, gives a uniform colour to coat over, and helps protect your plastic from reacting with the paint meaning not only will the finish be more durable but the actual plastic part will be as well, which is ridiculously important for gunpla with all their moving parts.
>>
>>5744670
if you dont prime and you use laquer/enamels

the gunpla will become brittle as FUCK and you will have fucked up tremendously

always prime.
>>
>>5744763
Clearly his experimental results prove otherwise. I've not painted enough to know, but priming is heck of a lot useful in surface prep.

Put together a ZSS shield liger MK2 from the HLJ sale. I don't see a lot of zoids in these threads, anyone else like some zoids?

These are pretty nice, most of the parts have prepainted details and stuff, so it looks really good snapped together. Pretty good articulation and really high parts count for the size. How many parts do RGs have? because it feels like this may be similar.

Gold plastic shows nubs like a motherfucker though, probably gonna have to paint them anyways. Its also pretty small. Probably about the size of a HG gunpla if the gunpla was standing the same way on all fours.

I thought that whole issue is more to do with the ABS plastic that Bandai went mad with it few years ago and not the old PS plastic.
I remember Bandai has to have an official statement telling people to stop painting over the ABS pieces because they will crack due to chemical reactions.

Yeah I know it is part of the dynames arm arms set but I didn't know if another set or something had this as it didn't seem like the dynames arm arms set had anything that was soley exclusive to it but just dynames and a bunch of campaign parts
>>
>>5745763
The frame is specifically labelled Dynames Arm Arms, so, for now, seems it's exclusive to that model.

it's definitely not in the other Arm Arms sets, trust me, my father works for Bandai.

>>
Can anyone who has built the IBO weapon set one tell me if they've suffered bad parts alignment? Seam welding the cannon and the lance has given me nothing but suffering.
>>
>>5745670
I'm utterly confused about all this talk of ps/abs plastics. And I thought the brittle issue was just from top coat over whatever which of the above, but that it was ok if you painted first since you're not supposed to have too coat and paint of the same composition right? Shouldn't we just make a list of "do not paint /top coat the following MG frames"?
>>
>>5745763
Its only with that dynames. No other arms arm have that since each one has its own gimmick, dynames being sub arms

The only valid case I can think of is when your parts are so tiny that securing them for painting is a pain in the ass and the nubs are on the pegs and won't be seen.

Not a typical case for gunpla but you will see it in other kinds of plamo a lot.
>>
>>5747079
>>5747013
Guy who posted it. To make triggering even worse, he did that to a rg. As for "why people paint while on runners" is because they might think its easier, but then you get nubs and discoloration from doing so. Theres a couple of members who paint on runners, one of the worse was someone pearl coated and metallic painted a noble while she was on runners. When he posted the final pic, i couldnt look away from the sanded, top-coated nubs

>>
>>5747799
Cut the piece off from the tree with your cuts far away from where it connects to the piece. Cut the nubs off the piece cleanly with an x acto knife. Now shave off the pieces of the nub still that yes are still on the part with the tip of your x acto knife. Now sand over just exactly where the nub was with an edge of 400 grit sand paper you've folded up multiple times. Now wet sand it through every grit of sand paper being careful not to sand too much. It should look good when you're done with 2000 grit.
>>

>expecting me to do all this work for each and every nub

>>5747799
It's a darker shade of the plastic's color? If so, I've heard that's caused from the injection process. The trick in that case would be lightly sand and hope you're lucky. Try to take off the least amount of material as possible.
>>
>>5747845
you're only supposed to do it on visible nubs.

You've obvs sanded too much though, get 2000 grit and sand the whole surface til the shade is uniform throughout.
