For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Building the MG Full Armor Gundam now and I want to paint the pilot figure.
The pieces are molded in dark green, so they need to be repainted. But after painting, how do I panel line the pilot?

I have a rough idea, but for brevity's sake, how would you do it?

SAYONARAAAAAAA
SASA SHIKI HIBI YOOOOO

Speaking of, how is the DOugram kit? I heard it has really loose shoulder armor.
>>
>>5708853
As the guy who made the one in the OP it's alright, considering it was one of Max Factory's first kits. The shoulder armor isn't that loose once you paint it, but that should be obvious. The only real negative are the waterslides. Easily the worst I've ever used.

>Working on kit at like 11-12 at night
>Finished base coat and working on decals now
>Decals take surprisingly long to become loose from the paper
>Decals have little to no adhesion unless you tap down with a damp q-tip
>Out of mark softer/setter
>Apply all the decals in the OP image plus the red square on the torso and one of the feet warning signs and decide to let them sit overnight
>Go back to work on it next day
>Foot decal comes off while giving a wash
>Red square comes off just by touching it

The kit itself is good though, and is roughly about HG height. If you can get it for retail I'd say go for it.
>>
>>5708849
Is it sort of "Pebbling" the surface? I've seen people suggest adding a little bit of iso alcohol, windex, or dish soap for that.
>>
>>5708916
No, the surface is pretty smooth it just looks more matt than gloss and i was under the impression that it was the glossiness that stop decal silvering.

Guise I have a few questions..

Been away from home a while but dug up some gunpla and Koto kits that definitely need painting. Now I did airbrush some weapons and clear parts in the past (mainly using Tamiya) but those parts were still on the runner, and apparently that's a big no-no?
Also I remove nubs by shaving with my X-acto knife, is sanding that much of a better solution?

Lastly I was wondering if anyone recognizes the f-ed up Wing Gundam in pic related, found 'er in parts throughout the house and even the garden, wanna try and get the original kit for nostalgic reasons.

how long is the Seigfreid supposed to be?

my 1/144 Mave is 13cm based on a 18m long plane and had way more details than those. i saw that the VF-171 is around 10cm long when built, so its a hair under the 10.7cm it would be at 1/144, so they are probobly something around 1/160 scale.

So uh, I'm using Gundam Breaker 3 to plan out some kitbashes, and I'm having trouble deciding on something.
Which sets of legs fit better on this? Would you guys suggest something else entirely?

I already posted it on /m/, I hope it doesn't bother anyone but I figured I might as well post it here as well, sometimes I can't tell which board is more active.
>>
Guys, need some advice. I'm trying to panel line wash the GM Cardigan backpack after gloss coating it, but I'm assuming one of two things is happening. The gloss coat isn't going on thick enough, there for the paint just isn't sticking (Vallejo wash) or, the panel line paint just isn't working. I tried using mineral spirit thinned enamel, but it just ate right through. Same with pour type gundam marker.
>>
>>5709811
I think it has more to do with the panel line not being sharp/deep enough for the wash to settle in.

You should know, those lines that you swear you did a perfect lining on but once you try to get the excess off it takes everything off instead.
>>
>>5709796
Out of A, B and 3.

A or 3. Though I'd say 3
>>
>>5709822
Yep, that might be the problem. I tried it on a piece that wasn't painted (extra shoulder armor) worked just fine..
>>
>>5709824
Yeah, 3 was what I originally had in mind but I've been hesitating lately. The more I look at it, the more something feels off about it to me. I like the Shiki waist, but the legs just don't feel quite right. Do you think the legs look alright?

The legs work, I think the colours could do with some adjustments. The sole white thighs look a tad odd. Maybe break up the prong parts of the shins with some more blue or white, or even the bit at the back of the lower legs.
Maybe even a unique accent colour to compliment the red, white and blue.

Looks great, just needs a bit of work on the colors is all.

They're mecha musume of Kotobukiya's Frame Arms own original line of kits/designs. FAG is actually an official abbreviation that koto itself uses.

Ah, thanks.
When I looked for it I only found "Full Armor Gundam".

While I collect dolls I'm not into the typical Anime-Mecha-Girl aesthetic.
I'm not into anime at all, BJDs I own are all of the realistic type.
Probably the reason I'm looking for something different to paint, I have a shitton of metallic colors but that's not really what people want for their dolls/doll parts.

I actually prefer the full Mecha ones that are a bit sleek with lots of extra parts coming out of their back (like wings).
Pic related, I know that's a bit too much for a beginner.

Ok, I'll recommend to you some great advice.

Get a model of what you like, just start at a smaller scale.

If its gunpla its easy, a hg of JUST about any model kit, especially more recent kits won't give you many hassles as they're made for kids (yes, they have safety flags on pointy bits, even the doven wolf despite those antenna on the head snapping easily), then work your way up if you want a slight challenge.

Another good bit of advice I can give is apart from the kits with screws, they're all the same, snap fit kits, good instructions will serve you well.

Not saying get a PG unicorn as your first kit but consider the HG first, it'll hurt less when you look back on the mistakes you've done, obviously avoid the huge ass hg's like neo zeong (not hard to build but its expensive to look at its nubs from a newb) and so forth

Pic related, what a potential beginner build without all the tools required may look like, may encourage you to improve
>>
>>5710747
Making a fauna inspired kit really isn't unique to only one kit you know.

Maybe it was inspired by that, but the builder does do it his/her way.

>>

Thanks man, I'll look into it.
Gladly the prices are a lot less ass-raping compared to dolls, maybe I should just give it a try and if it doesn't work out it at least didn't cost me a fortune.
>>
>>5710752
If you're just looking to get your feet wet then you probably want a modern high grade. They're simple and cheap, but modern ones are good quality.

If you like sleek designs with lots of shit coming off them then look into hgce Revive Freedom, hgce Aile strike, hg transient, and hg V2. Or just browse Dalong until you find something you like.
>>
>>5710769
In this case he's actually talking about the frame arms girl line.
>>
>>5710770
Good luck friendo.

My first was an old deathscythe hell hg, it looks simerlar to that nub destiny image I posted, only cost me $20 from a local store so it was chump change.

If you want to go onto cruise mode try those new SD BB senshi kits, you almost dont need sprue cutters and nippers (though full paint jobs will need their help).

Avoid the ex-standard sd kits though, the promo shots hide how gappy they get
>>
>>5710773
Thanks for the recommendations.
I also checked some of the Flickr groups for inspiration, maybe it's good I started with dolls first else I'd probably drown in Gundams by now.

What is the best plamo of a CV33 Carro Veloce?
>>
>>5710770
Slightly contrary to what the other guy said, no modern Bandai kit of any size will be a "challenge".

The main reasons you want to start with HG are:
1. They're cheaper, so it feels like less of a waste if you don't finish it to its full potential.
2. They require more work to look great.

The second one won't make sense until you do it.

My recommendation: start with something cheap that you DON'T like. Or at least one that isn't your favorite. You're just using it to learn your basic skills by practicing what you read in the guide.

Once you've done a couple and you feel like you know what you're doing, get an HG that you really like the look of. Then put all your effort into applying everything you learned as painstakingly and thoroughly as possible to make it look perfect.

Spending hours and hours working on a model is very relaxing, and there's a great sense of satisfaction when you have the completed product in your hands, looking great because you took your time and really made it shine.

The reason you shouldn't start with MG and especially RG is that they will look great with next to zero effort, and there's nothing you can really do as an absolute beginner to improve them. They'll look nice on your shelf, but you should probably wait until you feel like you understand what plamo is about.

I looked at the SD ones, browsed around the Flickr group afterwards and found one I really like in the regular version too.
Pic related, for some reason I enjoy the idea of a battered up Gundam and already have ideas on how to paint him.

I'm a bit confused though because there are several versions, some include the battered up part, some need it bought as an add-on.
Different sizes too.
Will look into it a bit more, I'm fortunately not a quick buyer.
>>
>>5710794
Thanks for the recommendation.
I'm not a big fan of figures that basically come all finished to you anyway.
Reason I stopped buying figures early on and switched to dolls, since you get them blank and can paint/mod them to your liking.

While I'm not a rookie at painting/airbrushing I unfortunately suffer of two left hands when it comes to actually building something (incl. cutting, glueing and so on).
I just want something I can paint with more freedom and in ways I can't with dolls.
They also offer a totally different motive for pictures, I'm a sucker for the ones where they "fly" and are posed all dynamically.

Still need to read up a lot, I'm glad the guide is there, and crawl through websites.
It's good there are so many types out there, I'm sure I find a few that fit my type of working.
>>
>>5710807

There's the ancient HG Exia and the RG Exia. Both are 1/144 but the RG has shinyblades and an inner frame. It's not a first kit. There's a long out of print 1/100 no grade and the Master Grade. The MG is great except for bad ankles.

The RG Terminator/Repair parts are a P-Bandai limited edition part, so good look with that.

The MG Exia Dark Matter is a edgelorg version of the MG.

And that specific one is out of print so you'll be paying after market mark up in addition to that). There is no hg version.

It's "Perfect Gundam III" because it's one of the three perfect gundams. Its focus being a happy medium between a regular rx-78 and a FA one.

Red warrior is originally from an old 80s manga called Plamo Kyo which is basically the predecessor of build fighters and gunpla builders. Meijin just added slightly more details, some more missiles, and new weapons to the design.

Basically, in the GBF universe, there are incredible mlg pilots with insane skills and super builders who makes utterly broken weapons. For example, Sei invents the idea of a weapon that sucks your enemy's energy from them, but Fellini is able to fight him to a stand still in a stock Wing HG, despite that, since he's so good.

Original was stock, and Fellini just replaced stuff with upgraded parts.

I wonder if all Wings come with self destruct included.
>>
>>5711301
Felini's wing was not in any way "stock". Besides the custom parts it was supposed to have build quality close to that of the sbs. Takashi is supposed to be the one who taught Sei so his Rx-78-2 was probably really high quality as well.
>>
>>5711312
Sei's build strike was a stock aile strike at some point as well. He just heavily modified it to have new parts and things like a full inner frame as he went through the tournament. Iirc you can even see a box of it next to the area he's working on it in one episode.
>>
>>5711312
If you are replacing and upgrading parts then it is no longer stock. A stock item is called stock because you can typically buy it in that exact condition from the regular "stock" in stores.

They're as fun as the original Accguy, i.e. very.

Original Bearguy if you want mechanical aesthetic

Bearguy III if you just want cute

Bearguy F if you like polar bears and the "momma bear" aspect

Petitgguy if you really, really like cute and/or already got Bearguy F before them
>>
>>5711354
I like the Petitgguys the most, but it mostly comes down to me tacking on the backpack chairs onto most of my gunpla.
>>
>>5711314
If you'll even look at the startup screens on the GP bases when they set them, the custom models say "HG + Scratch".
>>
>>5711312
Well all the main gundams in wing were built with self destruct in the first place and it came up in so many episodes that it is definitely an iconic enough feature that I am sure the plavzky system would always have that feature in a wing based suit.

It's only stock if it is the same out of the box. The most you might be able to get away with while still claiming is stock is slapping on different weapons that aren't built into the suit. But even that is iffy.

Unfortunately.

Essentially, at SCGMC last year they had a pretty big fuckup. They did all the winner announcements and awards and stuff, one of my models was one of the announced winners at the event, I got a little trophy thing, went home.

Like 3 days later I'm online and see that one of them made an announcement on their blog that I found linked through somewhere else where they said they announced the wrong winners, woops.

So, I told them that it was kinda shitty that they didn't inform all the people who were incorrectly presented as winners and who should have been the winners before the announcement, cause that's kind of a huge buzzkill to stumble on to randomly. It would have been the professional thing to do.

I tried talking to clem about that in a comments section on the gunpla subreddit about it, he pretty much blew it off so I posted it on their facebook page and clem got super pissed off and went nuclear.

I was formal about it, and he was not.

Meh, if you want to run an event under the facade that you are trying to be professional, be professional. I mean there were people who actually won commenting there finding out for the first time well after that post was made. They had everybody's emails and such, they just didn't want to do it.

>>5711735

Any knowledge of proper use or tips would be helpful, thanks. Also in terms of washing recently sanded parts before priming, and airbrush parts after a painting session. Just don't want to presume it's broken be wrong since I'm doing something wrong.

I got this model: http://www.amazon.com/Magnasonic-Professional-Ultrasonic-Cleaning-Eyeglasses/dp/B00HZVYAVM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465002767&sr=8-1&keywords=ultrasonic+cleaner

You're using it wrong, son.

Sonic cleaners are for cleaning, not for stripping.
In any case, cured acrylics will not come off after a few minutes in alcohol (lacquer might come off if your alcohol is 99% and hot and your cleaner is not plastic).

You use sonic cleaner for 2 things:

1. You clean your plamo parts in water with a drop of dish soap after wet sanding them to get the soapy dust from panel lines and nooks and crevices.

2. You clean your plugged up airbrush parts if you are a lazy retard who cant into cleaning airbrush properly after painting.

Those are the only 2 use cases you can adequately cover with your cheap plastic cleaner (yeah you can also clean you glasses and rings and shit but those are not plamo so who cares).

Ah, I see. Well, I appreciate the advice. I had seen videos mentioning they could be used to help strip parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCiqRUB3Ums
And this forum too. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/420110.page

I'll still use it for the wet sanded parts and airbrush, but I think it might at least help at model paint removal.

In case you didn't notice, the cleaner they have in that video is something like pic related. Not only is it more powerful than what you got and is full stainless steel, it has a heater, so you can literally boil shit in various solvents and corrosive liquids like simple green. Now that one you CAN use to strip paint.

So while >>5712108 is right, I still find mine useful for stripping. I tend to use 70/30 Simple Green to tap water. I run for eight minutes, let it sit for an hour and check it. In this case, I had to let it sit for another hour, then run the cleaner for eight minutes. Right is the paint, left is the pieces (with primer attached, Mr. Surfacer is hardcore).

Basically it's function is just a container though, you could get the same results from any sort of container and time.
>>
>>5712134
I fill mine with 60/50 windex/water in that order. It can strip tamiya acrylics (Even lacquer thinned ones for airbrushing) in like a minute and is great for deep cleaning out my airbrush after a heavy session.

And then during the winner announcements there was audible groaning when Clem went

Like, honestly, what good is there in a trophy you had made for an event you run during which you wind up declaring yourself the winner?

I wish the groups would talk more, but I feel like it won't happen until

a) Gunpla modelers get a more cohesive community going
b) There get to be more events where the two groups can interact
c) People in both groups start telling the assholes to just shut up.

Modeling as a whole sees the loudest often shittiest people being the most active in the communities and the type most likely to try to organize anything because then they get to control shit and be an asshole with impunity. They need to get told off and shunned.

I think the problem with gunpla communities (and the primary reason why I'm not a part of one. general threads on 4chan don't count in my opinion) is that usually the 'leader' is that same type of insufferable cunt that is loud and proud of his nerdy/uncommon hobby. No idea of a power level, they also tend to spurt that gunpla is freedom nonsense and just snapfit.

I have it on my desk right now, just finished building it. It's a great kit! And it's pretty cheap, so it's not like a huge investment or anything. It looks cool, it poses pretty well. I haven't tried the "centaur" mode though, as I didn't care for the look of it. And the thighs are pretty short so it looks a little strange when you bend its knees. Other than that, it's a good kit, fun build, and it even comes with a stand.

Honestly, you really can't go wrong with pretty much any of the Iron Blooded Orphans kits. They're cheap, they're well engineered, they look great. Buy some.

So I have pic related, I admit I'm doing snapfit because laziness.

But one part that bothers me, the eye, ever since I started painting clear parts I get a better sense of satisfaction, problem is no where near me sells clear pink and all I have is clear red and fluro pink.

Is there any color combo I can mix with clear to make it pink (don't say clear white cause...you know) or can I just put fluro pink behind the eye to give it a clear pink tone to it?

Or should I just forget the clear and just pink up the front already, I just hate using eye stickers and its one of the few things I will always paint on a model no matter how lazy I am

Jesta Cannon/MG guy here...

Took me six hours to get this far... I've never done ANY type of model kits (bar lego) before and I was scared of being bad at panel lining...

... I don't think I'm awful - I tried to "scribe" with my knife onto the top of his calves to help the ink stay in place but I slipped, twice and scratched the model :(.

Overall I am really impressed with myself that I managed to make this - I've been put off doing stuff like this in the past because I can't really paint or draw but I've really enjoyed it.

Make sure your pressing down enough on the marker, it looks like some of the lines are light. Another (and easy) option is to get a .5mm mechanical pencil like below (because of the exposed writing portion). You can control how dark your lines get based on pressure and going over the panel a few times. I used on my Tallgeese III here for example.

I'll go over my panels again - That may explain why I wasn't happy with the "top of calf" lines and attempted to "carve" the line deeper... Slipping and then causing it to scratch ;__;.

You don't really need to use your knife when you do that. Most lines work just fine. The other thing to get a hold of are the pour type gundam markers. They're effectively panel line washes in a marker. Just let it dry and wipe off the excess with qtips with some lighter fluid on it.

Gunpla noobie here.

I've been building scale military models since I was a kid, but I recently started watching the Gundam shows and I naturally wanted to try my hand at Gunpla since my local hobby shop carries them.

I built a quick snap-fit HGUC Zeta Gundam, no painting and light detail work/panel lining, but now I want more of a challenge.

I picked up an MG Zaku II and some can Tamiya paints (i'm going to go for that red Char look). I also plan on doing tons of detail and weathering.

My real question though, after reading through both the guide and the Layman's Gunpla guide is this: is it better to build the entire gunpla kit, then disassemble and paint? Or should I do it by individual piece like with a scale model? Or should I put the component parts (Head, torso, limbs) together, then disassemble and paint, then combine them all for the final product?
>>
>>5713211

you build the whole thing then paint in parts small enough that you will never have any plastic showing when the kit is moved in any way
>>
>>5713211
>Or should I put the component parts (Head, torso, limbs) together, then disassemble and paint, then combine them all for the final product?
This one. This way you can see where parts will rub up against each other and might scratch your paintjob, as well as seeing any imperfections you need to fix.

I've built 3, I like them but they're very sticker heavy and have some limited articulation on kinda shit joints. They definitely require a lot of work to look good, but for the price of an SD they're quite nice, if you're willing to put in the effort and like a design I'd go for it.
>>
>>5713424
Thanks for the response m8. Ugh, fucking stickers. Would they look alright if you omitted most stickers, possibly only adding small details with gundam markers?
I really like some of these goofy designs, I just wanted something I could put together that would be fun and require far less time/effort than the average gunpla.
Sometimes I just wanna build..but not seriously build.
>>
>>5713429
We're talking big blocks of colors over curved parts and panels lines here, it depends on each kit but you can't get away with much without settling for the stickers or painting

I get what you mean, to be honest mine are still just snapfit because I wanted to build them for fun, but didn't want to settle for the stickers, so they're sitting around waiting to be loved

I think for the price point they're still pretty good kits, the only alternative would be the Hyper Function series of LBX kits, but there's a limited selection of designs and I don't have any so I can't vouch for them

And here's the (quick) results. The small marker worked perfectly fine as expected. The Copic markers..not so great with the basic nib. I did use both colors for reference.

The ink was interesting. It flows well and thins with water (though I did thin it too much). Also, I definitely need to try it again and let it dry longer so that I don't get that mess. I'll post about that at a later date.

so much detail and quality is lost though

Because you don't need a fuck huge image resolution with 3mb in file size to get your point across in a pic.
>>
>>5713561
4chan is an image board. theres no reason to not post the highest resolution picture you possibly can. it goes away when the thread dies anyway. what are you trying to preserve the 4chan servers bandwith or something?
>>
>>5713565
It's considered common courtesy in this thread as some people are browsing from phones or older machines and huge image sizes are a pain in the ass to load.
>>
>>5713572
thats their problem. there are people browsing on high end machines with fast internet connections and we don't appreciate this low res shit. wheres my common courtesy? Why are we catering to the lowest common denominator
>>
>>5713575
Because there's a whole board for high resolution pictures?
>>
>>5713575
You can have high resolutions with low file sizes, you know. You're just a lazy shit.
