You're probably better off asking in /tg/, especially with the Warhammer 40K space game (Battlefleet Gothic).

However, the secret behind many of the model spaceships from classic films like Star Wars and Alien is they just cobbled any and all pieces together. So just finding any plastic junk and working it into a design will get you started.

Most of the best stuff is found in war gaming games.

Theres a couple of larger stuff, like EagleMoss's and Diamond's but it's mostly just Star Trek and pre-built/painted.
There's also models for Battle Ship Yamato.
There's not a lot to choose from that isn't war gaming.

Saw them years and years ago, so they're kinda hard to get now.

i would love for starfox to get some model kits. I would drop the money to have a shelf full of all the different arwings alone

HLG has Yamato 2199 models. Probably other series too, but I haven't looked.

Fantasy Flights xwing and the spin off Armada have already painted good for display models you may like.

Pic related is the corvette from Xwing, decent size, painted good.

Amrada has all the large ships in a slightly smaller scale but they still look excellent.
