So I've lurked these threads for awhile, mostly because I like reading the drama.

>I'm genuinely curious with the following questions, please dont think I'm being snarky

What is it you like about doll collecting? How is it that you justify spending so much money on this?

I have expensive hobbies such as toys and lolita. But neither really compare to when I look at these dolls and see them for $500 or $300 plus buying their clothes which is usually expensive as well. Do they maintain good resale value?

>resale value is really the only thing that makes me feel better about dropping hundreds of dollars on lolita

>How is it that you justify spending so much money on this?
I like them more than other things that I could buy with the same money.

Why do you spend so much on dresses that can't really be worn throughout the every day life, which are often not even good quality and only so expensive because AP and the like can charge so much?
With a community that is pretty exhausting at times due to the focus on being pretty, with too many limited releases, narrow range of available sizes and the constant stress that comes with all these things combined?

It's a hobby like any other hobby.
I honestly don't get why people always try to do some difficult mind gymnastics when it comes to collecting dolls while it's pretty much the same like anything else that is not shelter, food, medicine and other things needed to survive.
It's a hobby, a luxury we don't need, but it makes fun, end of story.
Some spend hundreds on a dress they maybe wear once, some spend thousands on a gaming PC, others take drugs, some camp in front of an Apple store to get the newest iPhone and so on, we buy dolls.

To get back to the core of your question: I personally love customizing them and I like photography.
I have a lot of characters and stories I'd like to have something to look at for, unfortunately I sucked at drawing and lack humans that are willing to dress up and be ready for pictures 24/7 for me.
I like painting and airbrushing them, because I like to see how a blank canvas can come to "life", how a basic face can have so many different looks.
I'm looking at it from a creative side, but I know people who honestly just have them because they like pretty stuff.
Add the crazies who need to fill a gap, the people who think it's cool to own one, the ones with too much money and you basically have the same people you have in any other hobby.

Resale value depends on the doll and how you care for it. They mostly are pretty stable, but tastes change and some companies are not very popular and you can be glad when you sell the doll at all, no matter how much you reduce it.
>>
>>5635692
Thank you for such a detailed answer ! I guess in both situations (lolitas and dolls), you spend money on them because you like them.

For myself I like lolita but I dont wear it day to day. It makes me happy to have and wear. But I'm not sure I would have been so keen into the hobby if I couldn't get some money back when/if I decided to ever quit.

From your creative stand-point its very easy for me to understand since I have the same interests except with nendoroids (taking photos, creating scenes, making dioramas for them). Having dolls does seem like a really creative outlet but still a fairly pricey one. I have nothing against people who do this or spend money on it, but I really wanted to know how people felt about it since I am a curious type. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions, I feel I can understand a lot of your view points !

>What is it you like about doll collecting?

I like having pretty dolls around that I can style and pose. When all is said and done, they are like figures or action figures taken to the extreme. I like other toys as well and, well, dolls just became the natural progression I suppose. There's also a sense of satisfaction when you change a doll's look around and they just look so perfect.

>How is it that you justify spending so much money on this?

I have a job and don't own a lot of dolls (2 DD, 2 resin, and 11 Pullips). I buy them wigs and clothes a couple of times a year. After the initial purchase of a doll, spending $80 on an outfit here or there, $50 on a wig here or there isn't really unmanageable with my income. Plus, the DD's honestly get most of my spending money. They are my only large girl dolls and I love shopping for them as much as I love shopping for my own clothing (and I love clothes shopping).

It's a bit odd since I never liked dolls until I was in my 20's. As a kid it was all transformers and video games.

>What is it you like about doll collecting? How is it that you justify spending so much money on this?
I dunno. I guess I wanted physical manifestations of OCs I had in high school. Achievement unlocked. But it does become an addiction of sorts. I kind of buy them as rewards for hard work *if* I have the disposable income to be able to keep myself afloat for a few months in case of sickness, etc.

>Do they maintain good resale value?
You don't usually get the amount you put into them back. It's decent, but not like it used to be.

>>5635712
Hey, at least you aren't like the others telling us we're psycho for spending huge amounts of money on them. I have some pretty expensive dolls, but my car is pretty shit, y'know? I just don't care as much about my mode of transportation as long as it gets me there, rather than have something super fancy. Same pretty much goes for my clothes. I buy shit from Walmart and only go to the higher-end places when they have insane sales.

1) it's an innocent display of wealth. also dolls are actually fun compared to shoes/purses. The only other luxury thing i like as much as dolls is jewelry.

2) I like the memories i have attached to my collection and i like when other people like my dolls.

3) making OC's is a lot of fun, but im too scared to roleplay

i'm sort of the opposite, i used to (still do) roleplay for years on aim, then greatestjournal, then insanejournal before i got into dolls. part of me getting into dolls was wanting to find physical shells for my characters. when i roleplay i still use the photos of real people models and such to represent them, i don't merge the two hobbies, but i still love having doll versions of them. i've found dolls that look close to how the models i use when roleplaying, and then styled them the way i see my characters in my head.

Any of the bjd owners here also own a monster high doll? I'm trying to figure out if a 1/4 or 1/3 bjd's calf or thigh is anywhere near the same diameter as a MH waist.

Can anyone help me out on this?
>>
>>5638498
entirely dependent on the sculpt. Google measurements for the doll you're looking at. They'll tell you calf circumference.
>>
>>5638498
MH waists are pretty skinny, but I think my DC kid body is pretty close. My Cerisedolls Jolie's is sorta close. It's going to be pretty difficult finding a 1/3 with calves that skinny-- even my DC youth body's calves are too big.

Are Doll Chateaus strung in an X pattern? or regular?
>>
So I got a DD head recently and I didn't really care or pay attention to the color at the time, though now I wish I had.

So my question in two parts: how hard is it to find a WS DDS body?

If it's a pain in the ass or expensive, can the head be blushed/airbrushed to match a semiwhite DDS body?

Thanks in advance!
>>
>>5638783
Regular? What the heck do you mean by X pattern? All my Doll Chateaus are string the exact same was my other dolls are.
>>
>>5638783
Both of my Kid and Youth bodies are strung normally. My Youth body has the bonewings which were strung on the same string, but they caused too much stress and cracked the neck (this was before the wings were even put on-- just the balls on the back to support the wings). I reinforced it with some milliput, but have decided to not put on the wings until I suede them and decide on a better stringing method.

Now... as for their weird ones like the bone 'taurs and Elizabeth, I'm not sure.
>>
>>5638615
No just buying off 2nd hand english speakers in general. I hate going trough agents. I know I shouldn't be but the roundabout way of the whole transaction just really irks me. I do it when I have to but I try to avoid it.
>>
>>5638820
Word on the street is that Volks is discontinuing the white skin bodies, in fact you used to be able to grab a WS base body but they're not even listed on their webstores anymore. You can still build your own body out of parts though, from a cursory glance it looks like all the parts are in stock at Volks USA right this moment. I'd grab them while you still can.

The color difference between SW and WS is significant, I wouldn't think you could make it look good but I can't say for sure.
>>
>>5639284
Actually, now that I think about it I might be wrong about the WS base body, maybe it never existed. The rest of my post still holds though.
>>
>>5639294
Yo thanks! I'll go see about snagging some of the parts at least. I can't really afford the whole body at the moment but I can always... be cheap and make her wear tights all the time or some shit.

Thanks anon!

It's been a while since I've strung an Iple body, but I don't remember it being that complicated.

Most DollChateau dolls are pretty much strung like other BJD.

The only real oddities I've come across are the newer SuperGem bodies. They're pretty similar to the RealFee system, from what I gather.

I mostly know that feel. I took to buying full outfits for a while and am finding some of them fun to mix and match now. My bane is often finding shoes to match.

I guess pick an easy color palette and go with it. Most of my Yos did white/peachypink/offwhite for the "good" side and like burgundy/grey/black/purple for the "bad" side. Most of my shared sizes share the same schemes, though. My SDs like brown, dusty pink, and silver.

It takes so damned long to build up a decent cohesive wardrobe, though.

Look up advice on human-size minimalist wardrobes. They're based around having a base set of items in a certain color scheme and then statement pieces in more bold but still cohesive colors. Basically maximizing the amount of combinations you can get out of a certain set of clothing. I'm trying to do it myself, since I have to wear a certain color for work and so am basing the rest of my wardrobe around it to simplify life a little.

would you all say that most american faceup artist have the exact same style just about?
or is it just b/c fairyland sculpts and owners are so unoriginal and all want the same thing
>>
>>5641687
its not american artists, its just a small, but inexplicably popular group that seem to copy each other. i think it started with andreja, she got mega popular and then all these other people with "similar" styles showed up, and then she stopped doing commissions so these other people kind of evolved new trends but its like andreja, culur, rakeruspace, nomyens, and darjeeling (not quite as same faced as the others) all do faceups that look the same as each others, its hard to even tell them apart. particularly rakeruspace and andreja's stuff.

the white lip thing isn't done by most of them but i do see xanthi doing it, and culur is like, the biggest offender, but since she's so popular more and more people are doing it too. i fucking hate it.

Who would /toy/ suggest for a faceup like pic related? I don't know many DD faceup artists and the ones I have found are way less subtle with the anime look. Prefer something between a realistic bjd look and an anime DD.

It's probably because it's just on the top line of the lip and not carrying on up the lines under the nose. First one looks awful, second two I don't like but I can pretend I didn't see it easier.

I took a quick look at the DD forum, and DoA, but there's no western artist that might fit AND is open for commissions.
A lot of them are actually pretty bad and do this blocky, without details default look.
Your best bet is to look for BJD artists and see if they have done DDs too, the DD only ones are usually not working that detailed.

>>5641711
Nah, Nomyens and Darjeeling are mostly different.
Nomyens actually uses acrylic paint and works a bit more detailed, Darjeeling is more on the bold side.

Andreja and her copies all do the same thing: pencils, double eyelid (one black, one white, always), no detailed eyebrows (just blushed base with white 'hairs').
Nomyens is sometimes guilty of doing these things too, but she does it so fine and adds more details that it doesn't come across as bad.
She also doesn't follow this pattern religiously, unlike Culur and Rakeru.
Culur is silly though because it's obvious that she copies, but also that she has no clue why the other artists do what they do.
That white line above the upper lip and the eyelid is supposed to be a soft highlight, not a literally bold white line.
It's also obvious because she never really changed.
Usually an artist grows with his work, he goes through major style changes till he has find "his" style.
Culur can only copy Andreja and is forever stuck there.

Still don't get why people do it so bold, humans tend to have a subtle white line above their lip, but it's not a thick big white milk beard.
>>
>>5641670
God everything about that faceup is awful.
>>
>>5642164

I agree with what you're saying but honestly why should people like culur try to improve when stupid minifee owners all want the same thing? As long as people would pay I'd just keep pumping out the same old shit forever, easy money.

If it was done 99% more subtly I think it would be good, like a highlight instead of ayyyy lmao

Dunno, I personally value being proud and feeling good about my work higher than the money from recast MNF owners.
And I get that feeling on top of getting money from people.
But that's just me.
From a business point it's of course not bad, as long as people never stop liking Andreja clones.

Which I'm think sooner or later might happen.
I still remember when Illness Illusion and her sisters were the hottest shit with their emo Els on B&G bodies and how they were able to make money with them.
Nowadays nobody gives a fuck, yet alone remembers them, and their work never got better (just saw Illness' thread yesterday and god, does her stuff look bad).

Someone must have asked for it specifically, yeah. Darjeeling is actually a good artist with taste (not to mention excessive technical skill); when her stuff looks monotonous it's probably to do with people requesting similar things over and over again. That said, this is like the dumbest most inexplicable faceup trend I've seen, it's even more unappealing than those heavily lined oversized lips that were popular for a while or prominent dark spots in the corners of the mouth etc
>>

Someone please explain pic related to me. Who has a husband and still gets money for their Birthday?
>>
>>5642869
I know some friends have gotten birthday money from family despite being married. I don't think it's super common, but if someone's been going through a rough time it's a nice surprise.
>>
>>5642869
People with grandparents or whose parents don't know what to get them for their birthday. My sister and my dad often send me a little money on my birthday.

I'm in my late 20s.
>>
>>5642869
This is actually super common? I mean most of my married friends get money from their inlaws for their birthday.
>>
>>5642869
I'm my father's only child, he will probably never stop buying me gifts.
My step-mother once actually said she doesn't get why he's still getting me birthday and christmas gifts, despite my age, he just gasped at her all shocked (while I just chuckled because yes, she's right, but his reaction was just too good).

I'd say money actually gets more common the older you get?
You usually already got everything you need/want at home, and if you want something you buy it with your money.
>>
>>5642901
I've never heard of people getting a significant amount (enough to buy a BJD body) after they've graduated and entered the work force. Maybe the first year or two when you're struggling to make ends meet, but even then people tend to ask what you need/want and get that.
I mean, my grandma sends me $5 on my birthday, even though I'm in my 30s, but otherwise people send a gift they thought I'd like, or nothing at all.
>>
>>5642869
I dunno your cultural background or the confessors (who sounds kind of obnoxious to be honest) but its pretty traditional in my family to give small money gifts or cards specifically for adults. Its a consideration of maybe not knowing their exact tastes, or thinking that they can combine it with other money from other relatives (depending on how close the family is) to get something nicer. Or even just giving a little peace of mind if you're struggling. Its also more cost effective if you live too far away to give a gift in person since shipping a package is so expensive now.
>>
>>5642934
Also as reference my mom and uncles still receive birthday dinners despite being in their 40s/50s, and only don't get gifts or money because between them they've had 12 children, half of which are still actual small children who have birthday parties.
>>
>>5642919
>but even then people tend to ask what you need/want and get that

But that's the problem.
As soon as you are old enough you tend to buy everything you need right away.
At some point you reach a state where all things you still want/need are so expensive nobody but you will buy them for you anyway.
With money they can make that easier for you, instead of buying some tiny gift you don't need/most likely already have anyway.
>>
>>5642869
I'm a married man and my parents still send me 200 bucks for my birthday. (And like 400 + specific gifts for christmas.) I'm 26.
It's common.
>>
>>5642996

you get $200 for your birthday and $400 for christmas? are your parents rich or something? my mom hasn't gave me birthday money since i was 13
>>
>>5643040
Not really? I grew up in poverty, but my family managed to hit the buying a house and going on vacation out of state just because stage by this time. So what you're seeing with those numbers is them using new found middle class-ness to spoil their children a couple of times a year. They basically are very detailed with their accounts and aren't supporting me or my younger brother anymore. So. It's not rich, but it certainly feels like it after a childhood like I had.
>>
>>5642733
Oh jesus I do not miss the spots in the corners of the mouth. When commissioning someone, it was pretty frustrating. I'll only accept it if it's not dark. I have a couple of default faceups with it, but it's subtle because it was done in pink a shade darker than their lips.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure >>5642824 is right; that's Darjeeling's own doll.

>>5642869
I still get money in lieu of gifts for my birthday only because my parents don't know wtf to get me or how to get what I want. They'd rather see me get something I'd enjoy rather than something I wouldn't. Half of it is usually spent on clothes anyway. I'm 30 too, so I do believe it is pretty cultural.

>>5642919
Well the confessor anon only bought a 1/6 body, which are small, and didn't specify what company, so for all we know, it's probably a cheap Chinese company body that costs less than $100.
>>
>>5643040
>>5643051
I get money for my birthday and christmas from my middle class parents as well and while not as much as this it's close enough that I could absolutely see it happening.
>>
>>5642714
she's kinda boring.
>>
>>5642472
Those eyes look good but the teeth look awful :(
>>
I'm always scared of giving people a gift they won't really like or use, I'd rather give them money if I don't know them well enough to know exactly what they want. I hope society grows out of the idea that giving money is an impersonal gift, I think it's more considerate than giving people useless trinkets they probably don't want.

>>5642942
Do people normally stop getting birthday dinners as adults? Everybody in my family gets a birthday dinner. Nobody's gonna turn down an excuse for a good meal.
>>
>>5643674
I never got a birthday dinner, but most of my friends still do. I guess it depends, but it doesn't seem unusual to me.
>>
>>5643674
No I was just specifying that they didn't technically get a full on gift on account of the quickly-becoming-excessive amount of offspring they have.
>>
Well, doing faceups is much harder than I thought. I was under the assumption that being good at drawing and already knowing how to use paints and pastels would help, but I guess my hands go full retard as soon as I tried drawing a face on a 3D surface. I feel so defeated.
>>
>>5644070
It'll help you in the long run! Your first few attempts are going to be utter horse shit, accept that now. You'll get better with practice!

I watched one of my fave faceup artists start out being not very good at all and now she's phenomenal. You'll get there!
>>
>>5644070
It'll help, like the other anon said. Keep practicing.
>>
>>5643662
For some reason even the best artists tend to struggle with teeth.
They are hard to reach, need to be painted completely (which means it ends up looking streaky) and most people get uncomfortable when the teeth are not totally white, even if it isn't realistic.
I absolute hate painting them too.
It's just ridiculously hard to get them pleasant and good looking.

>>5644070
I never understood why people think being good at drawing = being good at painting tiny details on a 3D surface.
Painting face-ups is so much more than just lashes and eyebrows too.
Have a look at make-up tutorials to learn how to frame a face for more depth, dilute your paints and first learn to paint tiny and thin lines on the head cap.
Also look at face-up pictures from artists on Flickr, especially from the head you are currently painting.
It helps to see the head with different eyes, where people placed eyebrows and so on.
It's hard in the beginning but with proper training can be done, good luck!
>>

It's on the path to having your shit together. You've basically settled into a career and started developing it, you're familiar with the industry in which you work, you know how to do things like budget, buy groceries and should be financially self-sufficient.
That's having your shit together. Otherwise, what, you wait until you're a tenured SME, retire, and get married at 60?

That sounds more in line with what I'd like for my future. If I were to get married, I think it would be later in life, once I've accomplished all the things I want to do on my own.

>>5644561
>>5644425
The CDC did a study in 2011 that showed that 60% of marriages with couples between the ages of 20 and 25 end in divorce.
>>
>>5644561
I didn't mean that marriage is the path to shit together. Shit together means you're at a place where you can share your life with someone and be less likely to lose the relationship to relocation/immaturity/growing apart as you grow up. Having your shit together is a prereq for marriage
>>
>>5644586
I believe the point being made was that 25 year olds don't have their shit together.
>>
>>5644585
So no kids, then?

Isn't the average rate of divorce 40%–50% of all first marriages, and 60% of second marriages? I bet if you studied just people married at 25, you'd see it being a lot closer to the average.

Here's something to think about: getting married at 60 likely means your partner will have been married before. 60% chance of divorce, meaning your odds are no better than a 25 year old's.

>>5644589
They should. Maybe most don't anymore, but that doesn't mean that a 25 year old that's married is incapable of having their shit together.

There has been no study on the % of marriages ending in divorce for when the couple marries in their senior years, so your assumption has no basis in reality. I would actually think the opposite - those that get married in their 60's probably stay together until death.

i have having this same EXACT issue, also with three heads (technically two are faceplates.) one of which has been on sale since october.

i had one person start a layaway for one of them, then back out after the first payment. i let them do it because im a push over and didn't want to be a dick, but seriously, goddamnit, i just want someone to buy my shit.

i know my prices are high, but i charge $60 for a faceup, so if you minus that from the asking prices, they are being sold for the same as what the same sculpts are being sold for blank. or at least, what people are ASKING for the same blank sculpts.

https://shop61246968.world.taobao.com/index.htm?spm=2013.1.w5002-12522128922.2.ekpkoZ
they do very few dolls at a time. their other sculpts that i know of is a realistic asian SD head called "Cold Dew" and they're the same artist who made the demon worm baby.

the girl you posted isn't on their sale site, so i don't know if its something they are still working on and will eventually offer, or if its a personal project. google translate is all i can go by and its not very helpful, sorry.

"I know my prices are high"

Yes, that's your problem. You are never going to make back what you put into a faceup these days unless you're Internet famous OR someone sees it who just really loves that faceup. Otherwise people are just going to resent being forced to pay for a faceup they didn't even want or ask for. If a head won't sell within a few months with a particular faceup it's not going to, and it's probably time to knock off the price of the faceup.

Yes, it sucks, and you put in the work, but this ain't 2007. Just adding a faceup adds nothing to the value of heads anymore.

You're probably the first faceup artist that I can say I'm actually a fan of, so I hope you keep us posted on your new projects.
>>
>>5646367
shit anon, for real? i used to have the silly hope that i'd be one of those 'known' faceup artists, but i really don't have it in me. you actually have to constantly work to promote yourself, make websites, post on multiple forms of social media... its just way too much to deal with. now i'm happy to just settle down and enjoy my own dolls, which i hope people like, but i dunno, i'm not looking to have creepy fans of them a la elfgutz or whatever.

anyway, i'm rambling, but thanks anon, that's a nice, soothing thing to hear for a discouraged artist.

jesus christ i am absolutely in love with this doll (and silly mysterious woman's work in general) its a SimplyDivine thomas, but she's modded it in such subtle ways that its really one of a kind and even if i were to ever get one myself, it'd never look like this. plus his faceup, jesus!

this picture is kind of weird but hey its more interesting the the majority of doll pics, i can say that much

Wait so we're dragging culur for grainy face ups but these are considered good? The second one has visible brush strokes and the third one is decidedly average.

Honestly this thread nit picks every face up posted so long as it's from a popular artist but as soon as runny rainbow face anon posts theor shits great.
>>

This doll is pretty fucking cool but I feel like an unobstructed shot would reveal that the head is to big for that body. I really hope not cause its a damn cool looking doll.

contain that jelly anon. there is nothing wrong with visible paint strokes. that faceup, while not perfect, was obvious done with SOME care. compare it to one of culur's.

culur is shat on because she goes outside the lines more than a 3 year old, makes no attempt to smooth out her grainy pencil work, and blatantly copies other artists styles. she barely makes an effort. and as someone as famous as she is, she should at least fucking try.
>>
>>5646559

I'm not kayke I just don't understand the criteria /toy uses to judge faceups. If it's all just personal opinion that's all fine and dandy but all this talk of horrible 'grainy' faceups should at least be consistent if it's an objective criticism.
>>
>>5646562

Really that just looks like it was done in a different style with colored pencils instead of mostly paint. I actually prefer it aesthetically to the bleed over and brush strokes on the red heart one.
>>
>>5646568
uh how do you not see all the bleed over in culur's? there are even parts where there are stray lines like her hand had a seizure while drawing the black lines and she didn't even bother to erase them
>>
>>5646529
agreed, but you know how people here are. that rainbow faceup isn't even all that and i sure as hell wouldn't pay those prices anon is asking for.

I sort of get the feeling Culur bought likes on social media or something. But then again, people like Elfgutz's shenanigans too. Culur's been getting the confessions galore for >>5641670 but people are replying they really like it. Idk, that highlight is just way too overkill for me.

i dont think he looks too bobble headed, but if the hands are any indication on those sea monster eyeball pics, she's recently switched to a 5th motif timeless body. i think in this pic she was using a dollstown body. the timeless body i'm pretty sure is taller and has wide shoulders, so unless she switches to a dollshe 28m or something i don't think bobble head is avoidable.
>>
>>5646572

I see it but I still prefer it to rainbow anons attempt.

I actually tried to find a sugar skull inspired face up without shaky lines, bleed over, visible brush strokes or grannies and I couldnt find one. Leads me to believe sugar skull face ups are really
hard to do and /toys standards are way to high.

people also shit on culur because i think she sold a recast as legit once, and also owned recasts while claiming they were legit, and will also do faceups on recasts on the downlow.

i mostly shit on her for her sloppy linework, though
>>

My prices aren't even high or anything. I have 3 SD heads for between 50-200 and the 200 is just because it's limited... Idk man I just want a body for my other doll so if I could get rid of this shit that would be great.

Does anyone know how much the Snow Miku DD is going to cost? I know there's a $50 deposit on the 6th for preorders, but nowhere on the site does it say what she will actually cost. I'd go for the standard Miku, but they announced the rerelease way to late for me to save up.
>>
>>5646720
65,000 JPY + shipping

>>

I don't know. Do you want Snow Miku more than your figures? The dolls are, without a doubt, extremely high quality but no one can decide if she's worth the price except for yourself.

With 6 preorder periods, however, I don't think she's going to be hard to find on the after market at near-MSRP.
>>
>>5645909
>>5645909
How much of a loss are you taking? Many Asian currencies are devaluating and this makes the market stagnate until either a) prices tank and there's a buying frenzy direct from the manufacturer, or b) prices inflate like crazy and no one buys because wigs/eyes/clothes etc are impossibly expensive
>>
>>5645962

>>
>>5646302

>>
>>5646588
She also showed up with a recast to a convention that was anti-recast (being as companies were there exhibiting) I believe. The one up near Seattle. Ironic being as the Portland convention features her as a guest artist, yet is the one that had the huge recast drama last year.

Speaking of Resin Rose, what even was the deal this year? I didn't go being as it was fucking $50 a day for a show with 8 vendors, but there's absolutely nothing about it online. I've seen maybe three pictures and that's it. Did it just suck that much?
>>
>>5647157
I think it's supposed to make everything look a little more life-like, but that color really is jarring on such light colored skin. It's one thing for the cheeks to be a little pinker than they would be naturally, as you can just attribute that to something like makeup. I'm all for blushing the forehead, nose, and chin, but it needs to be in a more subtle color.
>>
>>5647327
I've seen a lot about it online, maybe just bc i follow mirrorada on tumblr and she seems to be mutuals w a bunch of others that went and has reblogged their posts. Were there really on 8 vendors? Is that not including the non-company people selling their own type stuff, because it looked like more than that. Anyway, a BJD-only convention will by necessity be kind of small, so I'm not sure what you're expecting from an event like that to bring it up to your standards; even US Dolpas are teeny. If you want a big BJD-only event, apart from a couple of cons you will have to go to Japan.
>>
>>5647718
How small is kind of small/teeny? I've been to a couple of Asian (Non-japanese) Doll Conventions and the few that were the smallest already had around 20+ booths, so I can't imagine how small US BJD events are.

And none of them come close to $50 in ticket price. I hope that 8 is just the small vendors and not everyone. Seems pretty steep even by american standards.
>>
>>5647718
Well ok looking at their site there was 18. Last time I looked was about a week before the con, when there was definitely less than ten listed. The closest thing to a 'company' is Batchix, its all indie artists. And I'm comparing it size wise to the nearest other convention, PNW BJD Expo. Not by any means a big convention either, but has a lot more going on panel wise and always has a few real companies at it in a decent venue, yet costs half as much as Resin Rose. I feel like it isn't unreasonable to think that a smaller convention held in the airport Holiday Inn banquet hall would cost less than a slightly bigger con at a bayside resort.
>>
>>5646212
You seem pretty knowledgable, dollbro. Have you heard any news about their sheep doll? I've never Taobao'd before so I have a very hard time believing you can get all that cute swag on top of a really cute doll for 61 dollarydoos.
>>
>>5648255
Not that anon, but looking at the listing right now, it is around $60-70 (depending on the conversion you're using) for the blank doll, but unassembled and not including shipping. It's an additional $60-70 for the faceup.

What seems to be included with the basic doll is: resin wig (short style), head (OE or SE), body, stringing tool, strings & s-hooks, and the assembly instruction sheet.

If you want to get both heads, it's an additional $25. All the other toys and props are sold separately.
>>
>>5648281
no thats just for the the shield/sword combo. i was able to find a post on tumblr about someone who had preordered the actual doll when it was released

> "I was able to order her blank, open-eyed, and already assembled. The total price I paid was 526 yuan, roughly 81 USD. It was 368 yuan for the doll + 70 yuan for the optional long hair piece + 60 yuan for the assembly fee + 28 yuan for domestic shipping."
>>
>>5648281
Sold separately, that makes way more sense.
>>5648313
Oh, awesome. Do you remember who they were? I can message them for more info. My friend wanted to know too and thought it was all one price. 81 is still a good deal! I don't want that extra wig piece, but I can't resist the gun hands, magic stick, and cute shoes.
>>
Can anyone help me identify this sculpt?
She's haunting me.
>>
I'm really not sure what to think about this doll. On the one hand parts of it are pleasing, but on the other hand, some areas look so incredibly sloppy and rushed (the feet, holy shit what a mess). I mean, at least it stands. But the lumpy knees and hands and asymmetrical face just make me sad. There was potential here, and so much of it got squandered.
>>
>>5648702
here's the link to the tumblr post, i dont think the person has received it yet, but maybe if you contact them they can tell you how they ordered

>no thats just for the the shield/sword combo

What do you mean? What you quoted matches the breakdown I provided. $62~ for the body+one head, $10 for assembly.

I thought it was pretty obvious that that didn't include shipping and fees. And the other anon didn't ask the price for any of the optional parts, so I didn't give it.

If you wanted to know the price of the individual props, I'd be happy to look it up for you.

Just saw the note about Comparison Heaven/Dollection needing help filling their database, so thanks for adding that note! I'll be sure to post some cute doll pics when I have a chance.
>>
>>5650143
The first year (not this one) I could have sworn she was a featured artist, because I remember thinking it was so weird since she had just had some kind of drama about taking a recast to PNW. I know its the local meetup group that runs RR, but to be honest I haven't participated much with them so I don't know their opinions. Its kind of confusing being as there's a Sunday group and a Saturday group and possibly a third group being as there was some kind of recast blowup in the Sat group a year or so ago.

>>5650200
Her faceups really are very simple. Not that they're badly done, but they're pretty firmly rooted in the old style when basically anything better than the original Volks defaults was worth paying for. One of my dolls actually came with a Buff faceup that I had assumed was very old, but I guess she still paints like that. I've since added to it to make it more modern.
>>
Speaking of PNW. Have we come up with a code word or anything for meeting?

>>
>>5649190

It looks.... less bad than I thought originally. But still not worth $400.

>>5654972
Ah, no, majority of people just buy them.
However, last two years there was all of a sudden a spike in people making them themselves (I mean, properly making them) and new artists selling dolls.
Retards who think it's cheaper to make them from fimo or whatever have been there since the beginning.

Also, anybody knows how to achieve such a nifty chrome effect?
I looked into it since I got an airbrush years ago, but most solutions are often too aggressive for resin OR tend to not stay that pretty for a long time.
Looked into colors, rubbing powders and whatnot, but nothing seems safe for resin.

Do you know if a community of doll-makers exist somewhere? With tutorials, making-ofs and such?
>>
>>5654998
I know dick about faceups, so this is a genuine question. Is there a reason Tamiya chrome acrylic paint wouldn't work in an airbrush?

Also I'm guessing it's tough to make it look fresh-paint-shiny for years and years. Probably goes dull just from minimal light exposure over the years.
>>
>>5655031
thats more of the art doll scene. most art dolls aren't meant to be played with, and are more akin to statues sometimes. many have their clothes or hair glued on. but some are jointed and poseable, art dolls are basically "anything goes"

just looking up "artdoll tutorial" brings up some interesting stuff.
>>
>>5655042
its too thick. art brush paints are very thin, but still intensely pigmented. if you take a regular acrylic paint and try to thin it out with thinner or water enough to spray, it won't come out a solid color. also it will gunk up in the air brush and clog it / fuck it up

I know DoA had a sister forum called The Joint for things like that. I'm fairly sure it has the same rules, but I'm not sure it's even very active, since I am not a member there.

This guy mixes his metallics with Glaze medium and uses an airbrush.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUyJDFZzyrQ&list=UUsVtZ8SRClYf4tPzy8HjNtA&index=6&feature=plcp

I also heard of people thinning their paints basically to the consistency of water and just doing a ton of coats.

Gundam and Warhammer people use metallics in airbrushes and they all seem to have different tricks. Actually asking /gunpla/ might get you some better answers than you can find here. You should post the same pic and ask what they'd recommend. When comes down to it, resin is still plastic after all.
>>
>>5655118
why not just use a metallic meant for an airbrush? vallejo makes some, i found this review, seems like they're decent and need minimal thinning (the guy says he just uses windshield wiper fluid)

Every touch makes it go dull, which with a doll makes things complicated, and you need to prepare the surface in a way that it's as free from scratches as possible.
That's why I wanted to keep it for parts that aren't handled that often (like Blythe/Pullip eyemechs and certain parts on weapons).

Since 99% of the things I do are commissions I need to be 100% safe that the surface won't be harmed and it can be removed without a trace and doesn't need a resin primer as base.
Unlike Gunpla and the like dolls are painted straight on a clear sealed surface and usually cleaned and repainted after a while.
It's not ment to stay forever.

Metallic is not chrome.
You can see at the end of the videos that the coats are not highly reflective and shiny, they are what you usually can expect from metallic colors.

I also looked at forums, making nice chrome is usually among car models a big problem.
However, they usually all use Alclad for it, which is pretty aggressive and for the best results needs glossy black enamel as a base.
This tutorial also needs enamel and lighter fluid, and the mentioned powder (which, as far as I'm informed, isn't sold anymore since it's highly toxic):
http://www.mvpfigure.com/gundam-model-tutorial/airbrush-tutorial-how-to-create-mirror-chrome-effect-by-nanxnei-studio/

Enamel is a no-go with dolls, same for any other material that is too aggressive, thick or tends to stain.

I'm really curious how the artist from that picture managed it, but I fear it comes down to him using the materials I try to avoid.
I've heard several times now already that asian artists tend to use enamel (and sometimes straight oil colors, looking at you IOS) for their customs, but I want to avoid that.

Picture attached is another customizing goal, but it seems cool stuff like that isn't possible with BJDs and co.

Why not cast it out of aluminum? Aluminum is fairly cheap and the easiest metal to cast.

Otherwise I'd try a chrome nailpolish. They come in a variety of colors and for something that small, would only take a bottle or two.

There's debate about how resin-friendly nailpolish is, but if you seal before you paint, I've found that there's no noticeable damage. Based on what chemistry geeks have found researching it, you're looking at 10 years minimum before it would start to degrade, if the shit stars aligned enough for there to actual be a reaction. 15-20 years before it's noticeable, but that would have more to do with the resin itself being short-lived.
>>
>>5654998

I don't know friend, it just looks like metallic airbrushing paint to me. You may be overthinking it. And yeah, enamels are if you want something to stay and ever come off.

Because I can't just cast parts people send to me for painting?
"Sure I will airbrush your parts, lemme make an aluminium cast of it"?
Not to mention how that should work for something like a Blythe eyemech.

Also no matter how "safe" nailpolish and the like might be, it would absolutely destroy my reputation.
Guess what happens to people who lie about their materials and then get exposed, or people who claim to know what they are doing and then use materials you are told not to use in any BJD 101 guide.

Like said, I mostly paint things for others, which is why I need to stay safe.
(I don't want to damage my own dolls either, but for me I just need chrome for blades, and most resin swords are pretty cheap and I could survive damaging some of them in my own collection).

>>5655288
I have the Vallejo metallic paints here (and several other companies too), they really don't look as shiny as the Doll-Zone dragon when airbrushed on.
Even when you add a black glossy surface before and use glossy sealant afterwards.
I had a big resin katana I used for some tests with safe colors, needless to say that none of the tests came out pleasing enough for me to call it a success.
>>
>>5655223
i honestly think you are seeing that fishtail as way more shiny than it actually is. its just the lighting and its very likely they sprayed a gloss over it. it really doesn't look chrome at all to me.

http://michtoy-from-the-front.blogspot.com/2015/09/product-spotlight-new-vallejo-metal.html

you talk about not wanting to do a base coat, but to get the results you want, you're going to have to do a base color of black at least. not a primer, but just airbrush black paint first, then do the metallic. you aren't going to be able to just do the metallics on their own, no matter what you use.

Where did you say this was for someone other than yourself? Are you the same person as >>5655223? You realize this board doesn't have poster IDs, right?

If you don't know how to do it, why would you take a commission on it? If you wanted to try it for yourself, but not get your shop flooded with requests, explain to people you either won't duplicate it, or that there are XYZ risks and make bank. People want chrome, there's no going back.

Yes, same person.
I assumed that was somewhat clear, since I also replied to the one anon asking me the question regarding a community for people who make dolls.
Sorry that this wasn't as obvious as I thought.

I don't take commissions for it, but I would very like to do so.
I had people asking me if it would be possible, usually for blades, that's why I looked into it.
However, since so far I wasn't able to find a way to do it that pleases me (and customers), I decided to give it a last try here.
You never know if there isn't someone out there who already tried it or knows a good source.
Maybe I should have used a better example too, the dragon was just the only thing close to it (and a BJD) I had at hand.

But so far it seems like I will not be able to add it to my shop.

The colors you linked are not the same as from the one tutorial.
Vallejo's Model Air Metallic (video) and the Metal Colors (spoons) are not the same, it even says so on the website you linked.
So far I only had the Model Air Metallic ones, it's been a while since I went color shopping.

http://www.mvpfigure.com/gundam-model-tutorial/airbrush-tutorial-how-to-create-mirror-chrome-effect-by-nanxnei-studio/
This is basically the effect I want to achieve.
I don't mind doing a black base coat, it's just that the best result is achieved with black glossy enamel (at least that's what the majority of websites say), something I can't use as a base.

Can anyone help me improve my dolls so they don't look like utter shit? I asked the question on tumblr and they are even more worthless than donkey shit. My dolls wear clothes from iplehouse and nine9style, they have nice custom faceup and even custom made alpaca wigs. But I'm not satisfied with their looks at all. They look so boring and generic. How come people like Elfgutz have dolls that look so alive and unique despite all of them being sloppy mess while mine despite commissioning expensive faceup, wigs, and eyes still look terrible? I don't know what to do anymore.
>>
>>5655820
Why don't you post your dolls so we can actually offer advice. From your description they sound like they look just fine.
>>
>>5655820
it might be your photography technique? or they might just look too generic. elfgutz is popular despite the hideousness of her dolls because they have an outlandish, tumblr catering style. crazy colored wigs, weird clashing clothes etc.

just because a doll is in decent clothes, has a good faceup, and is nicely put together doesn't mean its not boring.

tl;dr : your dolls are probably boring. good looking, but boring.
>>
>>5655860
oops just realized you weren't asking how to get other people to like your dolls, but asking how to make your dolls look better to yourself.

well. then it really is your photography, or how you're looking at them. dolls can seem kind of blah in person, but the same doll photographed a certain way, in certain lighting, can suddenly look really cool or alive.

i personally am shit at photography, despite loving how my dolls look, so im kind of in the same boat. i just don't have anywhere nice to photograph them aside from my boring white walled room. it definitely frustrates me and makes me feel bad, especially when i see other people take such cool pics.

There are badly customized dolls full of character and "life", while some perfectly customized ones just look like...well, dolls.
Some people are mostly popular because they manage to have dolls that are authentic (or/and 'realistic').
People like to see fully fleshed out characters, not just a pretty doll when they look at pictures.

Unfortunately creativity and that certain something can't always be achieved with nice clothes, face-ups and accessoires.
There are dolls that walk around in every day clothes and they still have this special vibe.
Your dolls probably don't lack nicer clothes, a different look or whatever, they lack character.

Where do you get your inspirations?
What do you want to achieve, to convey?
Does their style bother you, how they look on pictures, how they compare to others?.

I'm in the same boat as anon above. I have a shitty phone cam, I improvise when it comes to props and backgrounds, and I probably completely misunderstand the principles of photography.

However, all you can do really is to just keep doing things. That's the only way to improve. Look at other doll owners, study how their dolls looks, how they take pictures, then derive your own thing out of all the things you've learned.

Like, just having a proper background instead of a messy cluttered backdrop of your room can do so much already. What their eyes are focused on. And so on, and so forth. It's the little details.
Same goes for making them look alive desu. Even if your dolls wear the most expensive clothes, they'll probably just end up looking like that - expensive dolls in expensive clothes. You gotta figure out what their magic is. Like uhm be the blue fairy and turn Pinocchio into a real boy that kind of thing yeah

I'm rambling, my apologies.

Bite the bullet and buy a real camera, in the professional grade. If you can afford dolls, you can save and get a real camera. Then , get some real lens for the camera. 35mm to 60mm lens with 1.4 to 2.8. Play with the settings and lighting. Learn photography by doing and playing with settings, angles and environments. As you improve, work on photography equipments such as umbrella lights, light box, and tripods. Tl;dr start Investing time in photography. Less investing money in dolls.

How preposterous. What a quaint concept!
>>
>>5656013
>Less investing money in dolls.
hahahaha.

That said: I've got a damn degree in photography and I still prefer to use my phone for doll photos. It's autofocus actually functions, which means I spend less damn time fucking around with manual settings in the effort to get a crisp photo. (I know how, obviously, but why do I want to waste the time? It's a doll, not a professional photo.) Most newer phone cameras have a very high mp as well, which is a plus if you're editing/stretching/cropping the photos in any manner. (Also, my phone comes with built in cropping/skewing abilities, so...)

That said: Go to fucking walmart or something, get a point and shoot of decent quality. Brands you recognize (canon, kodak. Avoid fujifilm and that "cheap dslr" thing they have. It is not a dslr, it is a damn lie.), get something with ~16+ mp. Try to test it out in store.
Use, have fun.
You DO NOT NEED anything fancy if you are untrained on it.
If you do not know what you're doing, you WILL leave it on autofocus, and then it's no bloody better than a point and shoot.
Seriously. Just sit down and critically evaluate what you need and what you're liable to do with the camera. Don't spend more than you need.
>>
>>5656053
>(I know how, obviously, but why do I want to waste the time? It's a doll, not a professional photo.)

Wrong.
You want to do something, do it right.
Any second wasted on some half-ass lazy attempt is a second you could have used creating something cool. Add all these seconds and instead of a dozen shitty pictures you take one that you can be proud of.
Like one of my teachers said "A job worth doing is worth doing well".

Honestly don't get that.

However, I do agree that a fancy camera is not a must.
But instead of picking a cheaper one because it's "enough", it's important to ask yourself "am I willing to learn this tool?".
Don't pick a camera for your current skill level, pick one for the one you aspire to achieve and are willing to work towards to.
In case you are lazy and unwilling anyway just use the phone and accept what you get.
>>
>>5656076
>Wrong.
>You want to do something, do it right.

because I can still do it right and not have a camera that requires so much effort, hurr. I mean professional as in "wedding photos" and that kind of shit. It's a doll photo. I don't need to fine tune every detail that I wouldn't otherwise bother with. Because with a doll photo, I don't have a bridezilla crawling up my literal butthole. I wouldn't do those details if it wasn't for a customer.
Like I pointed out, a point and shoot has literally the same stuff that my professional camera has, but on autofocus.
Sure, I can get remarkable photos with manual mode. But why? After a point, it's silly.
But then, I guess I have the artistic talent to back up using a camera on my phone? (And can upload straight to social media, so.)

Anon might just y'know...be treating their hobby like a fucking hobby? Relaxing...you spend what time you want on it. Sometimes you wanna draw the mona Lisa and sometimes you want to draw animu chibis, both take some skill but you don't have to bust out the A+ every time if that's going to cause you more angst and bring down the fun factor. If the person is happy with what they get with an autofocus leave 'em be.
>>
>>5656013
I don't agree with either spending a shit load on a dslr, but also think if you want pretty good photos, a point and shoot is really lacking in some areas.

My solution: Buy a mirrorless. As someone who sold all their photography gear because I just wasn't into taking super serious photos anymore, a mirrorless was the perfect solution.
>>
I don't think the anon's problem is photography but rather creativity. If you don't bond with your dolls, chances are you need to change their styles. You may need to play around with different props, accessories, designs until you get what you want. If you are drawn to Elfgutz's dolls maybe try customizing in the fairykei style. It's overrated, lazy and sloppy but at least you will like your dolls.
Maybe your problem is that you commissioned all of their clothes and wigs. I personally bond with my dolls by making everything for them from scratch. You should try building some cute accessories for them.

I use my phone (iphone6) to do doll photos, but they turn out best if I take them outdoors. I think environmental factors help a whole lot too. I am not by any stretch of the imagination a serious photog, but there are many tips and tricks out there to getting better photos.
>>
>>5656098
That still makes no sense, especially after your explanation.
That's like saying "making beef wellington is difficult, that's why when I want cookies I just buy them from the store".
Like, you say yourself it's a million times easier to take doll pictures compared to something like a wedding (true), but that also means it's way easier to achieve a top result.
Instead you aim for mediocre because you can't be bothered to put in a tiny bit more work?

Also why the fuck do you make everything seem like a damn chore?
Fiddling in manual is to a lot of people part of the fun, that's like a painter complaining he has to mix his colors prior starting a new picture.
I get the feeling the whole wedding bullshit has made you bitter (which I could understand, of all photography sessions weddings are the worst to do).
>>
>>5656626
Easy tips:

Hold the phone horizontal, natural light is best light, never use flash, use grid lines setting to ensure you have a straight shot. If you don't have photoshop a free program like irfanview is an easy way to touch up, crop, and resize photos. Camera phones are excellent now. The hardest part is keeping the phone still with a person holding it. You don't need a $700 camera to take nice photos and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to justify their own spending.

Nail polish is not a great idea. I had used it since 2008 or so as gloss with some success on my personal dolls (I do not do faceups professionally). I used it on probably a dozen dolls without problem, the same brand of top coat. Always on top of the sealant. The nail polish typically has acetone in it which eats away the sealant below. If you use clear polish, you have to use many layers of sealant on top to prevent it from smearing the pastels on lips etc. all the pigment will be absorbed into the clear polish and diffuse out. I thought I was clever enough to beat it without problems. Never thought of the ramifications until it yellowed on one of my dolls and caused yellow staining on the dolls face which does not come out. I now use tamiya gloss
