I have two and would like if people would have enough honor that if they have a Shark Man already they would sit this one out.
Giving others who don't have one a better chance.

I'll be doing a random number generator after enough entries or maybe on Tuesday or so.

Sure, sure, it was nothing to write home about, especially since it's missing a lot of pieces, and the figure too. Shouldn't be too expensive to fix on BL.

Haven't seen Lego this dusty in a long while. I could easily say that it was on top of that shelf for way over 10 years.

What's the one thing you would like to see Lego do that will never happen? For me it would be minifigure scale models for all the original 151 pokemon. Basically like animal pieces but with pokemon instead.
>>
>>5625910
Fully transparent minifigs. I know there's some third party ones, but heard they're not very good.
>>
>>5625924
>Fully transparent minifigs
Literally never, unless Lego changes their transparent plastic altogether.

Because it's different sort of plastic than normal ABS, the two transparent parts put together (like a bar and a cone) will stick together so tightly thanks to reason that they're almost impossible to pry apart.

>Actually, would you mind posting a wider shot of your setup sometime? I think I really need to rethink my lighting and backdrop, put in some more effort than desk lamps standing around.

Sure thing. Pardon the mess, but I'm in the middle of several concurrent brainstorming sessions.

I have 1 yd. x 1yd pieces of black and white fabrics that I use when I need a very tall backdrop (like the land beyond in Apprentice Quest or Sunnydale Heights) because regular posterboard isn't large enough to completely fill the background when shooting very tall things like the ponderope from a low angle. I just use a pair of thumbtacks to pin them into preexisting holes in the window frames behind the table. For everything else, I have a bunch of different colored posterboard sheets, each with wide packing tape on the back corners. That way I can use sticky-tack to affix them to the window frames and don't have to worry about paper ripping. Because they aren't wide enough to span the entire window, I use another piece of packing tape that's been folded to be smooth on both sides. I use it like an extension and hook the posterboard to it on the left and the window frame on the right.

The very first Lego Quests just used a TV tray near a window, but later I started using a card table because it was wider. However, it was very low and I got sick of wrecking my back every time I ran a game, so I got a nice tall drafting table that I can stand at (it comes up to the base of my ribcage):
www.amazon.com/Berkley-Melamine-Surface-Drafting-Table/dp/B001IW3FTW

The lights are just a pair of $20 standing three-socket lights I got at Walmart. I bought two more blacklight bulbs today, bringing my total to three (very excited to use those soon), but I keep one of them screwed in just in case; the other five bulbs make plenty of light. You probably already saw my homemade baffles last thread.

Your camera's ISO looks like it's set higher than optimal. What model of camera is it?

You know, considering how Ideas has been working, I could see a good boat set from Jaws doing well. Enough neat things to make a playable set, and generally interesting enough to do well as is. I think the only big issue would be solid body, or brick-built body. For the later maybe work in some sections to allow Jaws boat damage if you worked in a shark model as well.

We're gonna need a bigger brick.

>>5626728
There were a couple of awesome Jaws sets that were getting close to getting to the review stage and LEGO wiped them all saying it wasn't an appropriate license.

That doesn't look very messy, but that is a lot of heads.

My camera's an old Kodak v1003, using ISO setting 80. With its tripod socket stripped out, a tendency to adjust white balance all by itself, it's old but it'll do when I improve my setup a bit. Biggest thing seems to be, rig up simiar baffles for my lights, position them better, and have more of them.

> the other five bulbs make plenty of light.

Yeah, mostly I only use two at the moment.

The tape-backed posterboard is brilliant. Thank you very much for the pic and suggestions, now I've got a good idea what to do.

Bandai is going to be making their own DBZ sets, I guess. They showed off pics of the minifigures, and they crop up sometimes in the Dragonball General threads here.

But frankly, the bootlegs look just about as good, if not better than those anyway, so...

Something you might try is changing your exposure meter to Center Spot. This is the trick I use in the Deep Shaft 8/ Cleft 18/ misc. glowing-pieces games. By focusing on the bright (glowing) area, it takes that brightness as the average scene brightness and compensates by raising or lowering the brightness of everything around it. The way I use it, I focus on the space miners' visors, the camera thinks the glowing visor is "average" lighting, the camera darkens everything else (including the visor), and I end up with what appears to be a glowing object in a dark room. In your case, you might be able to use it to force your camera to close off some of that overbright white.
>>
File: overexposurecompensating.jpg (64KB, 566x243px) Image search: [Google]
overexposurecompensating.jpg
64KB, 566x243px
You can also try forcing your camera to lower the brightness this way. I use this a lot when I want to make a scene look dimmer than it is. I can still use regular lighting, so everything is crisp and clear, but it gives me a nice head start once the image gets to Photoshop.

Sorry if this is stuff you already know about.

Hey man, I need to blog a bit about how your Lego Quest stories and how well you take pictures has inspired me:

So teaching is really low paying in many areas of the United States, but in Texas it pays really well and is extremely competitive (some really amazing educators can end up making 6 digits in less than a decade.) It's so competitive that students who are training to be educators to show off new and inventive ways to teach students. Now when you think Lego, you think pre-school-5th grade, just some recreational type of toy right? Well I plan on teaching highschool, and I wanted to use my hobby to entertain and teach kids, make things interesting and learn-able using characters from things they were familiar with. So, way back when I began learning to teach I had thought of the idea of using the figures I had already collected to recreate humorous and interesting scenes in novels my class had been assigned to read, (Highschool English Teacher in training here.) Then I started collecting Lego again because of the minifigure blind backs and then eventually some other sets that made me really excited. I hadn't bought Lego probably since I was 12, I'm 24 now.

I propagated these threads for awhile and eventually I was around when you had began one of your Lego Quest adventures on /tg/. I was really impressed and continue to be each time you do them. So inspired that the idea I originally had was replaced by the idea to use Lego instead to recreate scenes from books I plan on teaching my students, I've been even more excited than I was before because of that.

Anyway, I begin interning this year and I'm extremely confident that the idea will impress my peers and the teachers I plan working under. If all goes well, I will have passed my internship and my classes I have left, finally move away from my parents house to my own place and marry my fiance next fall.

My GF has built almost all of the creator mini modulars. I have been trying to convince her to buy a two pack of one she has already built (like two of the corner deli, for example) and try and MOC a unique building out of them. She is a little scared though because she doesnt think she has the creativity for it. I tell her to just look at pics of buildings and architecture and shit to get ideas.

I believe two or three of them and you can make some incredible medium modulars for sure.

This deli, man. There's a lot of potential here. I can picture a small patio section for customers, or mods to the set that build up the interior. I can easily see using the deli build as I have it set up, and fill in the missing "corner" that represents the majority of the interior of the building.

Stick it on the corner of street baseplates and flesh out the outdoor stuff. Holy fuck I love it.

Like I said, I think someone could easily put together the missing 10x10 section of this building and flesh out the interior with a bed, TV or radio and whatever else in the apartment section. The first floor could have a big counter with different foods in a display case as seen in legit deli's. Not much room for eating space inside, though.

>151 new molds

They wouldn't actually need 151 new, unique, molds though.

Certain Pokemon could be made using existing parts.
>Rattata could be made from a purple kitten piece.
>Hitmonchan could just be a minifig with boxing gloves.
>So could Machop and Machoke.
>And for that matter so could Mewtwo.
>Koffing could just use a minifig head.
>Voltorb and Electrode could be made out of ball/round pieces.
>Ponyta would just be a horse with flame decals.
>Rapidash could also be a normal horse body, but with a new, modified, head piece that allows a horn to be attached. That way, the new head mold could be used for shit like Unicorns in the future.

There's probably a others that I just can't think of at the moment.

Yes, I understand and accept that there would still be too many new parts required for a Pokemon line. I'm just pointing out that that not all 151 would need new molds.

>>
>>5627298
>if lego offered a custom color service they would double or even quadruple their profits over night.
You would think so, but replacing and rejiggering those molding machines is more trouble than it is actually worth if it's for custom orders.

They tried the easier route of producing LDD models with existing colors of pieces, and that turned out to be a lossmaker.
>>
>>5627301
im just talking about custom colors, seems like it would just be a case of, oh, this guy ordered one hundred of these alien blasters in green. Pour the green plastic into the existing mold bro! (or add the green dye or however they do it.)

Unique stickers on torsos.
>>
>>5627302
But that's just the thing. Metal molds are large fuckers, and plastic colors are calculated very precisely.

Ideas sets are a good example for looking at the limits of Lego's production processses: the first run of any given Ideas set goes to tens or hundreds of thousands of units; that's a big number! But even then, the number of new part recolors is limited. They can't just go ahead and recolor as many pieces as they want.

What more a measly custom order of one hundred?

I know it will never, ever happen, especially since Lego farms out their baseplate production to another company, but I really, really wish they would offer 32x32 baseplates in colors other than green and tan. I would be willing to pay $20 a pop (plus shipping) for a new black or white baseplate. The big modulars are great for having (comparatively) flooded the cracklink market (a few years ago I never thought I'd be able to get a new red 32x32 for less than fifty bucks) but I would be going nuts if they offered them in the eight-ten standard brick colors at twice the retail price of the greens and tans.

Here you go

There's two printed slope bricks inside the ship (beneath Unikitty), two in the cockpit and a handful printed control panel tiles. That's it. There's sticker control panels in the cockpit in addition to all the exterior stickers.
>>
>>5627790

IIRC the only actually printed parts are the 2x4 (or were a couple 2x3) sloped pieces that have the old Space insignia on them.

All the rest are stickers. Well, IIRC there might be one or two 1x2 plates with control panels printed on them as well, but that's a given in any space set.

Those generally aren't considered modulars. Just smaller creator sets...

But you might be interested in the Corner Deli. It opens up to reveal the inside (as in, it swings open as opposed to actually removing floors to reveal the inside, like the actual modulars.)

if you just mean bang for your buck, mixels and creator are where its at. mixels get 4 builds for 15$ (plus extra mixes on the site) and creator gets you three for its price, most of which is good.
id suggest stick with the creators that at least do something different each build though. Sure power digger was "just" three construction vehicles like the new one, but it was a dam good three.
stay away from sets like "nigga this makes three boats" unless you really like boats, or the set i think is literal shit "three different kinds of motorcycle"

if you mean enjoyment though, thats personal opinion, though im sure alot of people would suggest the kings mech, or some other nexo sets. i personally think the newest dragons from ninjago are fuckin amazing.

We used one of those at first.

After I organized and stuffed it with our first batch of instructions, the plastic snap lock on it actually broke when I closed it. Cant open the fucking thing now without breaking it, and have no reason at the moment to break it. Is it me, or do a LOT of Asians buy Star Wars?

I live in a predominantly European and Black region, and I just notice all these Asians popping out of nowhere, getting Star Wars all the time. This was at my local Lego store, after multiple visits, mind you, but even when I was part time at Toys R Us during highschool, I noticed a lot of Asians that bought Star Wars.

The Euros like the City/Creator stuff more, Whites are all about the action stuff like Ninjago and Superheroes and the Blacks are about 50/50 on Creator and action.

I just finished building the Ant-Man set, and honestly, I'm feeling a bit mixed.

The figs are all amazing, and I like the builds. I just can't help but feel they're both a bit on the small side, especially the catapult. 30€ for it was also a bit too much, but all of the super hero stuff get markups here so there's nothing I can do about it. It was also the version with updated legs, but I suppose that's the only one available any more. All in all, it's a good set but not worth the scalper prices. Thank god I found a stack of them in a toy store.

Mine also came with spare 2x2 round plates and 1x3 tile, which is cool.
