Pros and cons of the black series.
Which figure is best?
Pic related.
>>
Pros: It's Star Wars

Cons: It's Hasbro

The droids and troopers look ok, but avoid humans. That's a pretty good rule of thumb for life too anon.

>>5578435
I reckon some aliens like greedo are OK, but face painting is terrible on humans. See Poe Dameron
>>
>>5578444
The other Poe Dameron looked really good when I saw it in the store the other day. The one with the jacket.
>>
>>5578453
I saw that one as well, not as atrocious as the pilot variant.
>>
>>5578444
I didn't know Steve Buscemi had a figure.
>>
I really like how many different characters they already have despite only being a couple years old. The Japanese companies are understandably only doing the big characters so far, but a line up of all the Hasbro characters made to date is pretty extensive.

The paint work doesn't really bother me, but yeah, unmasked humans look awful. Luckily they only comprise maybe a third of the figures made so far.
>>
>>5578433
Pros: The highs of the line have been pretty high
Cons: The lows of the line have been pretty low.

Black Series is so inconsistent I can't really say it has any pros or cons. Even the line wide stuff, I can't really draw conclusions about or it's so relative as to be meaningless. Like, 20 bucks is a nice price point, but the good figures vanish from shelves and go for $5-20 more online, and the bad figures really feel like they should cost 15 or less. And that's before you get into the question of whether it's worth it to spend more on a better Japanese figure.

Some broad, sweeping generalizations I can make: Armored figures, like the OT Troopers and I thiiiink the clone troopers, they have all double jointed limbs. Most unarmored figures (and the FO Troopers) have double knees and single elbows, and Hasbro doesn't cut those single elbows to have more than 90 degrees of motion.

Likeness can be hit or miss, but the paint work and likenesses on the first few waves were fantastic, barring Obi Wan and Bespin Luke. There was some shift in how the line was manufactured around that time that Hasbro's still dealing with. See >>5578444 for details.

Best figure: Maul is damn good, so good I don't feel the urge to get the Figuarts (though that's largely because I got him a long time ago, had they come out at the same time, I'd definitely get the SHF). R2D2 is underrated, due to his size. Scout trooper is fantastic, as is any variation on the OT Stormtrooper. Boba Fett is hugely underrated, though at this point you should just get the MAFEX or the SHF. I hear good things about Jango Fett, and with a bit of paint I've seen Rey turn out fantastic.

I'd also say that Greedo and Han Solo are both quite underrated, though in Han's case, the SHF looks like it might be better.

Collection: I have Black Series Boba Fett, Sandtrooper, Stormtrooper, Shocktrooper, Scouttrooper, Bossk, Bespin Luke, Guava Enforcer, Chewie, Han, Greedo.
>>
>>5578586
I also have Bandai Kit Stormtrooper and Scouttrooper, as well as SHF Luke and MAFEX Vader, to give a sense of my perspective.
>>
>>5578586
>Han Solo is underrated
Agreed, I have the Wave 2 Han and he's really great. Good likeness and paint, and he's poseable as hell, not like Pilot LUKE.
>>
>>5578433
the 3.75 are usually solid because a lot of them are repacks from previous lines

the 6 inch feel useless because they have paint jobs that look like they're meant for a much smaller scale

check websites like jeditemplearchives.com and rebelscum to get a general idea of what paint jobs look good enough for you. They also write reviews that usually point out any movie-related inaccuracies if you're autistic about detail.
>>
>>5578586
Another thing I forgot is that the sculpting is generally really good, even if the paint isn't, so if you're gifted with a paint brush, you could get a lot more out of your investment than it first appears.
>>
I think 20 for one figure is too much it depends on the character honestly, I'd go 20 for boba but not generic guys.

I really enjoy the Black Series line, owning 12 six inch figures myself, the only one I dislike is slave Leia. The one really bad thing about it IMO is the inconsistent stock. I had to buy a Boba from a scalper sadly. Pic related is my Darth Vader, really awesome figure.

I thought Maul was surprisingly good

Other than him, I've only picked up the various Empire soldiers, like Flametrooper, TIE Pilot (OG and FO), Stormtrooper, Snowtrooper, etc. Oh and Proto Fett

Rey, Finn, and Krylon Ben got improved re-releases, why not pilot Poe?

>Elite series

Why would you want such shit?
>>
>>5590158
Grievous doesn't have BS and Boba got a cape in this release.
They're worth alot more than BS it seems but it may change given this wave but then again it's for the bluray event so it'll probably be limited.
>>
>>5590166
The Grievous figure is terrible and tends to fall off its own weight.

the Boba elite looks terrible.

Unless you're some misb collecting faggot or scalper then its completely irrelevant.
>>
>>5589800
pls die
>>
>>5590158
elite series shits on black series

i own both so I know
>>
>>5590267
Why is this exactly? I've never gotten Elite before but I had to jump on a $25 Grievous and Boba in that scale.
>>
>>5590166
Grievous is getting an SHF, you would have to be a fool to purchase the Elite.
>>
I like Elite series visually (from the front anyway) - I just wish they scaled okay with Black Series.

If all of this stuff came in at 6 inches you could just pick and choose which version you get and have your own ideal collection. It'd be beautiful. That's one of my favorite things about the Bandai kits, they work with Black Series pretty well.
>>
>>5590267
Elite Series is shit, but it's currently the only option for a 6-7 inch scale Grievous

>soft sculpts
>paint chipping
>shit articulation
>joints can't hold the weight of the metal so arms flop around
>can barely hold lightsabers
>no ankle articulation means he's constantly in a stepping forward pose

The only thing I like about him is the quilted texture on the cape.
>>
>>5580902
I remember this in bst, didn't the guy say he stole the pilot out of a tie fighter box?
>>
>>5582595
That's a Shadow trooper is it not?
Thought Darks were like cyborgs. the game just had them mislabeled?
>>
>>5590518
Nah, that's a Dark Trooper. Shadow Troopers just wear jet black Trooper armor.
>>
>>5580995
My local stores stopped carrying them between wave 3 and wave, what, 13, which was solid cases of Finn. I would even buy Finn but not by himself. I see the high prices at shows but I won't order cases for resale. They're either listed early and delayed for months or they skip preorders and just appear in stock one day. In either case, the assortments are always half stinkers that can't even be given away. That's what happens when your fucking cases are a whopping 4-6 figures. By being unable to short pack shitty figures you end up short packing hot ones.

I have this one too it looks great, only thing i'm not a fan of is the lightsaber blades
>>
>>5591270
What's wrong with the blades? It looks better than the regular version that's connected.
>>
>>5585743
Is there any way to get Black Series Vader anymore? I was never collecting them until last fall when the TFA stuff started coming out, but I want one badly because Vader is my favorite Star Wars character.
>>
>>5591204
I've only seen Emperors Wrath Vader at Walgreens. Do you think specific stores just buy a shitload of one figure? They had a whole display of Vaders
>>
This thread survived longer than I expected.
>>
Its over fot these
>>
>>5591656
They release solid cases of him every couple of months. Another is supposed to hit by his month. There should be a steady supply but you probably have to go through a specialty shop to get it.
>>
>>5589800
>>5591816
so kylo is worth it?
>>
>>5591941
If you want a black series Kylo then get the Kmart version. Its only 5 more than the regular one and you get the snow stand/deco, the better lightsaber blades, an open hand for force poses, and a lightsaber hilt. Plus Starkiller base Rey is coming soon.
>>
Got an elite series Bobas and Grievous a couple days ago, the worth for them dropped drastically. Like by half. Wasn't planning on getting rid of them but i'm pretty surprised given the fact that the market hasn't even been close to flooded.
Grievous is still around $120 but I'm not sure if it's selling.
>>
>>5593586

Boba and Grievous recently popped up on disney's store just recently. I got boba.
>>
>>5593592
The bluray and DVD release had the online store and Disney stores restocked.
It was amazing that I was able to track an old URL from the initial release because neither Grievous or Boba were fucking listed on the webstore. For $25 I could NOT pass up on a Boba or Grievous.

Boba ran on the site for 8 hours, from 4 AM EST. Grievous was a bit more available on the webstore but from what I've seen it was very limited in actual Disney stores
>>
>>5593592

I picked up the Poe + TR8R twin pack.

For the price (Australian) I'm fucking disgusted.
Poe looks like shit, any pose he's not just standing in is horrible, There is barely any articulation in his arms, his face is dead.
From what i've seen, better than the other sculpt but still shocking.

The Trooper, I can barely move his arms,
Managed to Pry the shield off
Cant hold the Riotstick
Fucking hate the knees.
>>

I'm also oz. PRICES.
I had to get Maul online.

I feel like the best figure is the Sandtrooper. I like taking pictures of them.. just took this last week down by lake Erie. Second would be the Scout trooper. All the new figures have been dumbed down it seems.. they don't even have double jointed elbows :/
>>
>>5598576
My favorite is the shadow. Never been a fan of the weathering on these lines.
>>
>>5598589
Agreed, the sandtrooper looks like he fell into a pool of horse shit.

Sand does not stick to things like that, if the dirt/sand was to discolor any part of his armor, it'd be the boots and shin guards, depending on how deep it was. I find it hard to believe that the empire would allow Stormtroopers to walk around looking like that.

>I hope the Slave Leia shelf-warming debacle doesn't shy them away from releasing more of her.

That really bugs me, because she's had some really good looks over the years. Her hoth and endor getups were great, and even her bespin appearance was pretty alright. It's cool that we got boushh, but I never really liked that design anyway. Have the ever commented on why they made such a retarded choice of costumes for her first toy?

My fiancé actually picked me up General Grievous and Maul from the Elite series. I wish Hasbor would keep making 3.75 inch figures but they hate my money and me apparently. I don't wanna collect the 6 inch figures. Tho if I somehow find Ahsoka, it won't even be a second guess.

Yeah I collect 3.75 myself and starting to buy 6in is kinda hard to find my characters in the wild. I bought flametrooper and tie pilot awhile back and really want more but damn scalping and them not having a steady output of popular figures has ruined every opportunity for ms to find some.

I think their small sizes and the fact that it still feels as if Hasbro put some love into them sums up the comfy feeling for me. Sometimes it's just fun for me to mess around with a tiny figure. Especially if it has the same amount of detail, articulation and care put into them as the later TLC and VC Star Wars figures.

What I hate the most about it is Hasbro's blatant attempts to kill the articulated 3.75 line of figures. A new movie came out and we only got a handfull of them which, put insult to injury, were incredibly hard to find exclusives. Even before TFA came out the line's been at a decline. they released these three new fan favorite clone troopers with a new mold. Sounds pretty good right? Not really. The new body was actually inferior to their old clone trooper molds. They had less articulation, less individual parts and less detail. They're obviously taking the cheap route but what frustrates me is how easy it would've been for them to be WAY better. Take Commander Doom for example. They could've just took Cody's helmet, stuck it onto a generic clone commander body and repainted it into Doom's colors. Same goes for Rex, just make a new helmet and stick it onto a 501st Blue clone commander body.

tl;dr: post 3.75" figs that blew your mind.

>>
>>5608588
Zuvio wasn't even important enough to be in the theatrical cut. I love aliens but zuvio isn't that cool.

>>5608593
Neither Hasbro nor SW toy marketing has final cut of the film. The figure was in the works long before Zuvio was cut out of the movie.

>>
>>5608595
Everybody gets a copy of the script and if not there should be safeguards in place to stop mass production of what amounts to a prop.
Nobody on Jakku was important to the story except Unkar Plutt.
Only some of the Cantina/Jabba Palace/Senator actionfigures ever sell and it´s always the ones that stand out more dsign-wise or story-wise, the majority are shelfwarmers or collector fodder. It´s always a better idea to just make the important characters and wait for reactions to choose which ones of the mass-alien scenes are popular and which ones should be used to fill out blank spaces in 30 years.

Hasbro does random figures in this line, the goal is obviously to make every character once like the old 3 inch line. I am ok with this but that doesn´t really work when they release so much fewer figures with so many choices that can justifyably be called main characters.

>Everybody gets a copy of the script

Of course they don't. Nobody at Hasbro sees a script. Nobody in marketing gets a script. They get a name, reference photos and MAYBE a basic character description.

I couldn't care less about a Zuvio figure but obviously nobody was like "Let's make a figure of this guy who's not gonna be in the movie."
>>
>>5608724
>Of course they don't. Nobody at Hasbro sees a script. Nobody in marketing gets a script.
They always give the scripts to Lego, why should they act different with Hasbro?

>>5608724
>but obviously nobody was like "Let's make a figure of this guy who's not gonna be in the movie."
Feels like it though when the description does not specify that he is in only one or two scenes that might easily be cut out. Kind of defeats the point of their work when what they wanted to achieve isn´t achieved.
>>
>>5608780
Okay, you're right. They hand out the scripts to anyone who wants one, that's why we all knew the complete plot of the movie months ahead of time. Hasbro decided that they'd make the most money with a character who wasn't in the movie. You win.
>>
>>5608821
I'm pretty sure they get the final cut of the movie a full year before the editors finalize it 2 months before its release date.
I mean, how can they not, when toy companies need to start production of the toys more than a year before its supposed to be released?
>>
>>5608537
>Snow trooper 2-pack with one of those turrets
Providing they don't cheap out on articulation I'd buy it. I'd buy it hard
>>
>>5608724
They were completely counting on hype to move the toys. That's why they came out months before the actual movie.

That's why everyone was scrambling to find Kylo Ren and Phasma, even though they sucked really hard in the movie.

It was people getting Jar Jar tattoos all over again.

Uhh... I don't want to be rude, man, but you have zero idea how the movie industry works if you think this happens. All the toy companies need, or get, is drawings of the characters. Maybe photos of costume tests, promo shots, etc. But that is it. Why would they need more than that?

Goddamn Mafex Vader is a big guy

I can't decide whether or not it's worth like twenty dollars more than the model kit Vader

For you...
>>
>>5611915
I don't have the model kit so I couldn't tell you. I do however have all the other 6 inch Vaders and I'm pretty happy with my MAFEX being the lead figure for display/pics etc.
>>
>>5611915
Model kit requires a lot of work to get looking right: constructing it, painting, and replacing the cape & skirt. It's well worth it, but if you don't feel like going through all that, Mafex Vader is the next best option.
>>
>>5612105
Building it isn't a problem, that's fun; but what is there to paint? Doesn't it come with waterslides for everything that isn't black or clear red?

Not this autist again. You're just as bad as subjectanon.
>>
>>5612143
Thanks! When people were first commenting on their Flametroopers the general complaint was the figure's inability to properly hold its flamethrower. Then, I got mine and had no problem getting to hold the flamethrower in convincing poses. I realized what you already know, some people just straight up suck dick at posing.

I really like the flametrooper--one of the few non-rehashed designs of TFA. I have been debating getting another one.
>>
Got my Kanan today.

I think he's my favorite Black Series figure in a while. Just solid in all aspects. The gummy light saber is my only complaint and it's not even that bad.
>>
>>5612234
The only complaint about the gummy lightsaber Is over time the upper partsags in his hand when the lightsaber is attached for long periods. I like how it makes it easier to get into his hand though.
>>
>>5612158
I think most complaints about the toys are from people who don't own the figure and only judge a picture from a limited amount of pictures, if not just one.
So if a figure is shown holding a gun with one hand or whatever, they automatically assume it can't hold it with both.

There's a lot of people like this on /toy/, judging toys based on only a few pictures online.
>>
>>5612234
The lightsabers still bug me, remove able blade is cool but they feel gummy as hell
Would've preferred what they did to Starkiller Base Kylo with the lightsaber being one piece and including an extra hilt
>>
So how shitty are the clone troopers? The clone wars show made me fall in love with them and I really wanted one for my collection. I just ordered a captain for $15 shipped.

Picked up 2 of these on clearance at a walgreens for 10 a piece.
>>
>>5615923
Nice buys anon.

You should paint one black so you have a good regular Black Series Vader.
>>
>>5615919
Your welcome! It is a chunkier trooper because of the armour but it still manages to have okay torso/ab movement. It really can do all the requisite poses and it is sturdy. I am seriously considering getting another one.
>>
>>5615934
Kept one in the box and the other is out. I want to keep them both original, but would love to have the regular. I'm just going to find the regular black, or I thought I heard another variant is coming out. Anyone know for sure?
>>
>>5615923
Nice find, it's not my favorite look, but ten bucks is a great price. Do you happen to know if that was a local discount or if it's that cheap at other wallgreens?

I think It was just local. I went to 3 others that didn't have any at all. I also picked up Kylo at the same place for 6.

>>5615940
Cool, i'l definitelly grab one, maybe two for the scouting poses, what about Phasma, Anon, can it pose at least as much as a regular Stormtrooper?

I know I'm so fucking mad for Hasbro going 6", which meant less work if any put into their 3/4" line and more expensive figures instead, with bad QC harder to ignore with the upgraded scales.

I wish they had stuck to their 3/4" line but didnt make so many useless EU or random background alien #25871 variants.

Just army builders with good posing and main characters, thats fucking it. Godamn.

Will we ever see such quality of sculpt/pain application in the 3/4" line as we did with the Vintage Series? I fear not.

Vintage Collection feels like the last geniune attempt by Hasbro for quality 3/4" figues before saying fuckit and moving onto Black Series, and Black 6" and then releasing supbar 3/4" figures for TFA.

You can easily verify this by just trying to purchase any TVC 3/4" figure today, enjoy those insane prices and total scarcity. It's such a good line many don't even want to sell theirs, besides fucking scalpers who sell at $40+

I regret being able to only get 3 TVC figures in total. The best being Bespin Luke, god tier articulation with that ball join in the hip, great paint apps, a solid figure, Hasbro at their best, and it lasted so short.
>>
>>5612143
lmfao are you serious?

>>5612135
>that fucking over-exaggerated leg extension

I hate that shit so much, its the classic "action pose" for the legs that makes it look really silly, no one would hold or fire a weapon like that

Though I understand why its posed that way, any less degree of extension would unbalance the figure more and wouldn't even stand up probably, you would have to lift the other knee higher to compensate, and the whole stance would be higher, higher center of gravity and it'll be prone to tipping over that way

Good luck ever getting Hasbro to do that.

Seriously I would love it so much to see that happen but I just don't see it, they seem focused on Black Series and TFA figures now, no love for TVC and the mainly OT figures it had.

>tfw pic related at non-insane scalper price fucking NEVER
>>
>>5617174
Check out the insane amount of articulation here.

It was hard to see Hasbro go from this to muh 5 POA

It's like instead of reaching a new level of quality for their 3/4" line and at the very least plateauing there at a stable and great place they take 5 fucking steps backward with the line that came afterwards.

The level of poseability with the TVC line was the best we've ever seen for the 3/4" figures
>>
>>5617174
>so many useless EU or random background alien #25871 variants

those are the best part of 3/4", the fact that they exist

Kanan is cool guys. I really recommend this figure. I hope I can snag an Ahsoka soon.

Since Sabine is being released later, I hope they release an Ezra figure with a lothcat, space fruit, lightsabre, holocrons and storm trooper helmet. Then of course a Zeb with his staff and a Hera with Chopper like they did for Rey with BB-8.

About 5 out of 7 figures in the wave. There's two different sets of arms and two different heads to choose from.

Since all the figures from the Allfather wave are shelfwarming hard, It shouldn't be too hard to get him. Wal-Mart has the figures clearanced down to $16 each, so look there first.
>>
>>5619571
Yeah, good figures

>5 out of 7
>>
>>5617176
No, it's just the angle of the shot that makes it look "over-exaggerated"---if that's even a thing.

>no one would hold or fire a weapon like that

That's literally the way the weapon is held in the movie. Also, an undergrip is better than the silly grip on the upper handle we see when people do shitty poses with it.

I can't imagine the latter would be a better way to hold a weapon like that IRL; undergrip gives you better control and stability.

I really don't get the hate for this figure. It's poses ok, holds the flamethrower properly, if anything it suffers from the bad sculpted elbow and lack of double joints.

I don't have one yet, but I feel like the shoulders make way more of a difference in holding a weapon 2-handed than elbows. The stormtrooper can do it alright if you trim the elbows to 90 degrees, but stuff like finn, rey and old han have problems because their sculpts force their arms out at the shoulders when they're held straight forward. So long as he can put his arms straight forward like a zombie pose, he's fine.

Anyway I'm happy waiting until they dip down due to being double packed, but when they do, I'm picking up 2-3.

I really don't like 5 POA figs and I'm a box collector. I hate that that quality and packaging for those figures is basically Mexican bootleg shit. Remember when every 3/4" figure was bad ass? Hell even some of those AOTC era figures that weren't super articulated had great poses and shit. Just picked up these guys and it pisses me off that we don't have new Troopers that are this bad ass yet. Unless you buy the damn 6" figs
>>
>>5617463

Yeah Hasbro went with 5POA for their 3.75" line and brought all the articulation over to Black series 6" and those of us with decade long 3.75" collection were left in the dust with absolute shit quality figures

After one last hurrah from TVC which was the apex of Hasbro's 3.75" figure line
