I'm just about to start on an Eduard I16 Type 24 and I don't have an airbrush. What kind of tips does anyone have for brush painting a model?

Someone in the last thread mentioned primer but that was it. Are there any brush recommendations? Im going to be using Vallejo paints.

Brushes? Buy sable ones. Also, base colours look better when sprayed, use cans

What kind of respirator/mask do you use for simple acrylics and which for things like lacquers?

since when do models fall apart after a wash?
I used oil paint and turpentine and it seems to dissolve the glue
>>
>>5516363
seriously fuck this hobby
I've spent so much money and time on it and it provides nothing more than frustration and despair.

My last 6 models ended up ruined because of shit like this. Why do I even put up with this?
>>
>>5516363
>>5516478
kek what glue did you use?
you used actual turpentine?
>>
>>5516363
>>5516478

Well. Don't use turps on a model.

Actually I know that feeling of despair, like the paint rubbing off my Ba-64 when I was removing dark wash with humbrol enamel thinners. I'd used mig primer, vallejo paints and a coat of satin and the paint still was stripped to the plastic. However I pulled through and it ended up looking nice. I won't be using too much thinners again.
>>
>>5516363
use mineral spirits to thin oil washes, turpentine will fuck your shit up.
>>
>>5516637
>>5516641
>>5516735

well I used turpentine substitute
I've used it before and it didn't remove the glue at all.
I also used the standard revell plastic glue.
>>
>>5516913
hum i see.

turps subs is white spirit / mineral spirit and is what mig and that lot use for their washes
so i don't know.

i have migs thinner for washes that i aint used yet. but i get the feeling that's probably just white spirit in a bottle
>>
>>5516929
I think I might have used too much.
I let the wash dry on my model for about 30 minutes before I scrubbed it off.

I bought this model Taihou. But I don't know what hull paint to use.

I have some other ships, and Akagi and a Kongo, and they were pretty easy to find. Sasebo Arsenal and Kure Arsenal respectively apparently.

But not finding much info on what kind of paint the Taihou should be painted in. Any help?
>>
Guys, why would one want to take up this hobby? it's nice, artistic somewhat, but it's such a fucking time killer. how much time per week do you spend on it?
>>
>>5517418
Per week? I'd say about the same as any of my sporting hobbies, about 5-10 hours.

Difference is, I can do this at my computer desk whereas I have to plan to go running and what not. Also, I can pretty much stop within 10 minutes if anything comes up.
>>

What's the verdict on Academy kits? Are they easy to assemble for an experienced modeller?
I want something I can whip up fast and have fun painting, but old tamiya stuff is too shit even for my standards.

>>5520625
yeah, definitely, of course, that depends on the kit.

This is the academy P-51C kit in 1/72, did all this work in one sitting (a little less actually)

If you're looking for something cheap and easy, you can try some airfix. Just do 5 min of research into a kit of your fancy on scalemates and you're golden.
>>
>>5520625
>>5520639
should of been more clear, I'm looking for something in 35th scale, like their hetzer.

DSC_0218.jpg
466KB, 1920x1080px
>>5520644
Again, that depends on the kit. Both of these are Academy, yet one is much more difficult to "whip up fast and have fun painting". If you were an experienced modeller, I suspect you would already know this. The kits' fit is good, but their proportions are sometimes off. Of course, not everyone cares, and if you wanted an easy build, I had a quick gander at their Hetzer and yes, it is easy for even beginners, but the painting might be tedious (depending on which version)

Both of them are abandoned projects from years ago. pls no h8
>>
>>5520622
Nice. I was wondering where you went. I thought you were going to do an Australian version.
>>
>>5520644
Academy's 1/35 are excellent kits. I guess all their new kits would be good.

>>
>all you nerds using airbrushes and other fancy equipment

Jokes aside, I still build my models the oldfashioned way, straight out of the box, painted with brushes, no weathering at all.

Sometimes I wonder if I should invest in an airbrush to make them look cleaner.

When did you guys step up your game?
>>
>>5522700
BasicModelling, is that you?
>>
>>5522755
Nope, although I have to say that I enjoy his videos quite a bit.

Apparently this ways works excellent on "easier" kits from Revell or Airfix for example.

Right now, I'm working on Trumpeter's 1/700 Warspite in 1942 configuration and it feels like my skill doesn't do the good kit justice.
>>
>>5522792
Any pics? How long have you been modelling? Why haven't you invested in an airbrush yet?
>>

What's the best way of going about painting tanks with these types of tracks? Fit them to the road wheels and assembling them separately?

I was doing a tank kit and I had assembled everything at once. Make it kind of hard to get in to paint some of the finer details.

Does anyone have any tips?
>>
>>5529740
This is a second coat. I'm going to top with one more of grey. If I thin that coat better, will it help mask some of the brush strokes?
>>
>>5529916
I always painted the segments before fitting and gluing. After that, any glue etc. Can be cleaned up.
>>
>>5530112
no, paint doesn't work like that, you cant add more expecting it to cover previous lumps and bumps, quite the opposite, more paint actually emphasises shitty surfaces.

you could do a little sanding with a high grit paper.

are you using a flat brush? cos you should be.

you could possible try brushing a bit of thinner on, hoping it reactivates the paint and smoothes it a bit.
>>
>>5530184
I'm using a flat brush but it's a super cheap hobby lobby one.

What grit of sandpaper should I be using? 2000?
>>
>>5530195
probably start at 1k wet sand, go down to 800 wet for any troublesome bits, mask any hard edges you don't want to lose.

brushes don't need to be expansive, just as long as theyre not hard and bristly. synthetic sables are just fine.

Here's a diorama I'm working on. I removed all the dirt I lazily scattered upon the foam I molded and replaced it with a "mud" I made. Its drying now.

Hey /toy/, why does it seem that the scale modeling community is largely populated by old guys? Is there something that this does not appeal to younger folks?
>>
>>5531820
I think maybe cause scale modelling is usually focused on military, older people are drawn to it because of that, it's also a nice and relaxing hobby which older people prefer than say video games
My dad is the one who got me into modelling and he is a big military/WW2 fanatic
>>
>>5531842
I figured that could be why. I'm the only one I actually know offline who likes to make models. I gained interest through it from vidya. I did feel a sense of total relaxation earlier this night when I was painting and listening to piano music.

I wish IÂŽd know. I got my first model sometime around 1997 when I was 7 years old. 1:72 Airfix DeHavilland Mosquito. It was shit, I was shit, but it still left me craving for more.
I think it has more to do with the setting of models. IÂŽve been always a military geek, reading stupid crap like Commando and watching WW2 movies and documentaries and reading books about the subject. Fact is that Warhammer and Gunpla (which even I do) Might appeal more to younger audience when it comes to modelling.

But I agree about the setting. I like really gritty stuff myself, so I'm making a diorama right now with an M60A3, and my inspiration kind of draws from "Fury" just set in the mid 80's.

Not sure if the figures are badly painted, or just suck. What brand are they?
>>
>>5531820
I think it's more to do with patience. I see heaps of kids get super excited at my local. When they sit down and actually try to put a 3 hour block into a kit, they cant do it and give up.

It's like most creative hobbies. You hardly ever see any good traditional artists under the age of 10. It just takes too long to build up the skill that they'd rather just waste their time on smaller, more easily attainable achievements like bideo blames.
>>
>>5531820
For me at least, I got into modelling because my father used to make Warhammer models.
I had Airfix figures and various tanks and planes and would play with them. I had painted some of them, albeit badly. So all in all I had these poorly-painted playthings.
Sometime when I was twelve, I decided I liked the look of Airfix's matilda tank, and that's where my collection began.
I was modelling all throughout my teens. I think the main attraction was the feeling that it could be as realistic as I could physically make it, which motivated me to make more increasingly realistic models.

I think scale modeling comes with a different type of application. the idea of "the thrill of the build" rather than just the product. It's something that an individual will appreciate as they develop things which takes time, patience, and hard work. When I was young I played with my models so obviously building it was just an add on.

21 reporting.

I developed a fascination for military vehicles (mostly aircraft) when I was about 12.
Then I went to an aviation museum and saw a whole room full of built aircraft models and I got interested what kind of models they are. I knew about paper models. I tried to build some myself when I was around 6 or 7 but they were old models printed on thick card board that wouldn't bend in a straight line. It was frustrating anf I lost interest. But miniatures always fascinated me.
Anyway, I found out about plastic scale models and got into the hobby when I was 16.

Well done mate, really loved the texture of the ground.

Couple of suggestions:

- Since the mud is so wet and new, the tracks and the underside in general should be a more dirty. That type of mud really ends up going everywhere when the tanks moves.

-Connected to the above, next time aim to have the tank a bit more into the ground to give a sense of weight. It will avoid looking like it is floating above the terrain.

Nevertheless, great work man.

It wasn't a far walk, I live on the second floor. Plus most of the people that in the barracks are at work right now or stay inside because its cold. I'm off duty today. Someone did see me, but we know eachother and he knows I'm into that kind of thing. I was considering adding in a couple of infantrymen, they're already assembled and ready to go. I'm not that good at painting figures right now and I'm out of a lot of paints right now. Was also thinking about making a small camp or something with a tent and maybe a campfire. This was my first diorama I've ever done, so I wasn't sure how I could implement vegetation. I still have this whole weekend with nothing to do so I can still go about making small improvements.

I think I will make tank muddier and I'll see if I can still form the foam to make the tank a bit deeper though.

Not bad mang, but:

- Are the tracks green?? You should paint the running gear of AFVs before attaching it to make your life alot easier
- The silver periscopes on the TC's hatch are really distracting, and seem a bizarre color compare to the other optics, perhaps use gloss dark blue?
- You might want to try Mr. Surfacer to replicate the cast nature of the turret as the texture is very smooth right now
- Also the weld seams at the front of the turret are too far apart, you can sculpt putty inbetween to make a good weld texture

Personally, i hate figures, to me they always ruin models. Its really not your fault here, IMO there's something about the human form that makes it hard capture realistically in scale, even big scales like 1/35.

The contrast of having a highly detailed, accurate vehicle next to (relatively) shitty human models breaks all sense of immersion for me.

Also i would definitely stay with bright lighting or the green will just disappear amidst the brown.

I want to get into ship modelling. How do I do it? What's a good scale?

I hear 1/700 is good, but others say it's bad for beginners due to how small it is.

how hardcore do you want to go? If you go full photo etch, you might have some trouble at 1/700. I suppose if you're getting into it

Otherwise go for 1/700

to be fair I don't think maybe of the older generations know 4chan or most forums for that matter.

It's a shame though, older generations have more experience but I think younger models are more creative, it would be nice to see them share ideas with each others
>>
>>5534145
In my opinion scale ships take a longer time than aircraft or armour scales do to the nature of how much of a scale down is needed and how much attention to detail is needed because of it.

So if you're going to take the copious the time (like I take) when building a ship model, go all the way and get a 1/350 scale with photo etch parts.

However if you are relatively new to modeling, maybe a 1/350 carrier maybe to costly to ruin in your first go.
>>
>>5534145
There are cheap 1/350 scale ships from Zvezda and Hobbyboss. I think that 1/700 scale is too small.

then video games and internet happened and i took a huge break from modelling.

Maybe next time go with a larger scale, and file down/cut off the excess plastic when you're assembling it. Also don't spill glue all over it.

Try going with Tamiya's T-62 kit, its an older one but they're cheap and if you love slavshit it might not be a terrible decision.
>>
>>5535311
I most surely am going with a large scale next time. Most of the problem by far is with the ERA but I also struggled with the tracks, so I'll probably take a model that doesn't use ERA. The BMP-2 is my favorite vehicle so I think I'll want to go for that next.

trumpeter does good 1/700 scale vessels, which are nice because they're relatively cheap but have modern molds. I think I saw HMS Renown on amazon for like $25 the other day. start by looking through their offerings- some of them even have small photoetch frets included in the kit, and most ship models need photoetch to look good.

Tamiya/Hasegawa/Aoshima all make very cheap 1/700 ships, but they're mostly japanese and the few that aren't are generally older molds from the mid 1970s and lack modern detail. Aoshima also just came out with a waterline HMS Ark Royal with brand new molding.

If you're really brand new to this hobby a ship isn't the greatest choice because they tend to have either fucktons of small parts or look terrible. An exception is U-boats: Revell has a couple of 1:144 scale U-boats that have relatively small part counts but still look good, and they're pretty big. they're also very easy to paint because their geometry is relatively simple.

Just finished making these wooden paint racks for my workstation. My old paint racks were really tall and poorly put together, and I spent a lot more effort on the new ones.
What do you guys think?

Also, currently working on a Tamiya 1:48 Fw-190F-8 kit, no aftermarket or anything and I only paid $15 for it.

Here's the older, shitty ones I built. I used shitty thin poplar wood because it was cheap, and I stupidly used thin wood for the framing. I also had to use sheet metal screws because I couldn't find small enough wood screws for the shelves.

Another mistake I made was that I didn't drill sinks for the screws into the wood, mostly because the wood was so thin, but it meant the screws were sticking out from the sides.

Pretty nice. What spray booth is that and how much does it cost?
>>
>>5541224
Thanks, it's a Artograph 1530. It's a decent spraybooth, but it's over-priced (I think I paid $350 for it at the time). Good air suction, and comes with a three-layer filter system.

I wouldn't recommend it for the following reason though, its awkward design. The fans are at the bottom of the booth, and it sucks air in vertically rather than horizontally. This forces me to stand up while airbrushing, which I prefer for priming and other quick, easy spray jobs, but it makes painting things like shading and camouflage a pain in the ass. Then again, it all depends on what type of setup you have I guess.

In the future I'm either going to build myself a custom table that the booth can sink into or I'm going to build my own airbrush booth using wood (which I did in the past albeit very crudely)

Same except when it comes to weathering, I just drop my tanks into a really muddy puddle or bury them gravel/dust.

Is it tamiya acrylic? Spray windex on it and scrub with a toothbrush. You'll be impressed.
>>
>>5541573
Use this stuff, completely strips everything without harming the plastic.

They sell it at Lowes, Home Depot and I think Wal Mart as well. Let it soak for a few hours in a tub, you can dilute it if you wish, then take an old toothbrush and scrub off the paint. Most will dissolve into the liquid, but some will require a bit of effort to get off.

I've been building the new boxing of Academy's KIFV, and there are some issues.
Firstly, there is no interior in this boxing. So I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.
Second, the instructions suck ass in places. I am struggling with the 50.cal armour plates simply because the instructions are so vague.

There are also numerous small gaps where various parts attach to the hull.
Do you think that Mig Ammo Primer would fill these gaps?

mr muscle oven cleaner
or
Fairy PowerSpray

I haven't used them myself yet but I do have some paint to strip off a ship hull. enamels at that. its what was recommended.
but I think youre only meant to leave it about 10 minutes then wash it off.
also best to wear a mask as its quite harsh smelling.
>>
>>5516478
If you are using oil based paints, never use an oil-based wash. Use water-based acrylics.

Or, you can lay down a gloss acrylic coat on top of the oil-based paints, and then use an oil-based wash over the protected enamel.

Also, use mineral spirits to thin oil paints, never turps.
>>
What do you guys think about washes with ground pastels and water? Anyone ever used it?
>>
>>5543191
Seems like it wouldnt be very even
>>
>>5543191
You'll need something to break the water tension, like dish soap. You'll also need a really smooth and glossy finish so it doesn't binds with the plastic.

I used it once on a kit, you need to coat the whole kit in it, I always thought it lack the nuance that one could achieve with an oil wash. However the whole gloss coat thing in my opinion made it too unconvient, it takes as much time just using a Tamiya or Mig wash on flat paint.

>>
>>5544153
Not too many people replying to you, but just want to say it looks pretty good, keep it up. What model is that AT-AT by the way?
>>
>>5544103
Am I the only person that always puts a wash over an acrylic gloss coat, even if the main layer of paint is acrylic? For some reason I was always told that washes should always go ontop of a gloss coat. Is that always true?

What I'm trying to ask is if weathering is easier to do over a matte surface vs. a gloss surface?
>>
>>5544589
it depends.

In the case of pastel washes a gloss coat is needed, if the water tension isn't perfectly broken than it will bind to the rough surface of an acrylic matt.

In the case of oil washes from Mig or Tamiya I have no trouble when applying them over matt acrylic surfaces. keep in mind I use Tamiya acrylics with a lacquer thinner which gives a flat but much smoother finish than alcohol thinners, this might prevent binding.

tldr: to be safe you could just use a gloss coat, but I find using designated modeling wash to work just fine on flat acrylic paints.

I read that highlights and filters are best applied before gloss-coating the model.

When do I apply the "final" clear coat (e.g. satin) I want to have on my model? I don't like my tanks all glossy.
>>
>>5544855
Final coat after all the weathering is done. It should be the last step

>>

Yea, 1/144 ties and xwings also sound like shit. Like, what is the point.

The amt at-at is approx 1/100, and its a decent size
>>
>>5545519
True, I think the only reason they're making 1/144 x-wings, ties, etc. is because Bandai is already doing them in 1:48 and 1:72. Fills a very niche scale, but like you said, 1/144 X-wings are tiny as fuck and very un-detailed. 1/72 is already pretty tiny for the X-wing.

I started this kit YEARS ago with my uncle and never finished it. Now that I want to get into modeling, he let me have it so I don't have to spend money on a new kit yet. The problem is that it's already partially assembled but not painted. Was I supposed to paint before assembly? I'm not screwed in any way, am I?

I don't use Tamiya paints, but I expect I'll use some of Vallejo's camouflage colours I got free with my H&S airbrush.

I just wondered if there were any particular colours, like how you have RLM and RAL for German armour.

29.

Did a few airfix kits when I was about 5-6 then moved on to GW stuff. Dropped that at around 22 when I stopped working for them and did nothing hobby related for years, going back to PC strategy/wargames.

Picked up a couple of kits 18 months or so ago and due to work commitments have only finished three (including the original 1/72 P-51D that got me back in to it) but have amassed a moderate stash of around 100 kits of various scales and subjects.

I'm currently working on/fighting an Airfix Blenheim Mk.1 which is a well designed and mostly very accurate kit (for some reason they left the Bolingbroke collector ring and carb intakes on the engines) that is let down by their stupid soft plastic. Makes the fit an absolute fuck on in places. Still it's nearly done and I'll be glad to see the back of it.
