Yes there is. This is what conversation on gunpla/plamo general usually consist of:

so if you don't watch gundam at all, or have no interest in them at all, then most of the conversation going on will not interest you.

That's why there's separate figma/SHF threads. BJD/Monster High threads, Transformers/gunpla threads. Those combos are similar, but different enough that those who are interested solely in one will not be interested in another, hence separate threads.

Here's what I'm currently working on so far. Tamiya Leopard 2A6 converted to 2a6M. I put off the WWII stuff since I'm enjoying building more modern stuff now.

1/72 B-17f/ 1/48 p-51 here. I haven't done much since I needed new filters for my respirator and the stores near me didn't carry them. I did assemble one of my backlogs, a 1/350 Riich 668i . I'm going to add in the masts but after painting the hull since I just know they'll get broken.

Yeah, in a sense. I made a batch of thinned paint but found that it looked a little too watery, so I tried painting the slopes with the unthinned oil paint and let it dry for a while. After that I applied the thinned batch over the slopes so that the brush stokes wouldn't be too obvious.
The flats are done using just the thinned paint.

Got this little kit today. Looks pretty good in the box and even comes with photo-etch. Gonna start working on it now.

The new colors, washes and pigments have arrived today. Before I use them on my Panther, I tested them on an old Revell Jagdtiger that I build about 10 years ago.
The whole tank is repainted because it just sucked how it looked before. The tracks are are not finished and already falling off, so I may replace them completely.
It tried some cipping with different colors.

Just a few things I noticed, the oil effects seem a bit out of scale. Be careful to not over-do it in this sense. I think you are right on with comment regarding the chipping, it looks a bit too much like aircraft aluminum, not tank metal.

Its been some month i played it but Jagdpanther, Panther, Tiger 2, Ferdi, both DB mediums and Panther/m10 and E-25 are awesome tanks. On lower tiers Panzer 3, 4 and both tier 4 and 5 Stugs are awesome if you are looking for fun tanks to drive.
Even arty is fun. You have the agile GW Panther with its large arc of fire (thanks to the turret) and then there comes this huge beast called GW Tiger. It does more damage, but everything else is worse than its predecessor: Aim time, reload time, turn time, gun arc, acceleration, top speed.. and it looks like shit.

I have only gotten the hull together, some minor gaps that putty will handle no problem. Overall it seems like a decent kit depending on much detail you would put into it.

Typical cheap rubber tracks, not much detail at all but with some decent painting they should be presentable. I read on armorama that they are tight as fuck on the wheels and can snap them off if not done carefully. I know that are metal barrels on ebay and read that someone did make a resin detail kit with photo etching and shit but i don't think its made anymore.

Thinking of treating myself for Christmas (have amazon prime so hopefully it will arrive soon). I'm still pretty new (I've built a fair few of kits, maybe 12, but done nothing more than glued them together pretty much. No experience with painting, weathering, etc.)

Don't have a lot of money to spend, but I'm wondering what the general thoughts are on the cheap Airbrush + Compressor kits that are on Amazon (about £60 or I guess 100ish fiat dollars)? Not expecting anything amazing, but I want to know if they're at least serviceable. Would the compressor be sufficient if I was to upgrade to a better airbrush? Would I need to buy any new fittings?

Also, would getting the £28 pack of Vallejo 'basic air' paints put me in a decent place to start painting? The thing that put me off doing any painting thus far, and just building cheap kits, was all of the different colours needed for different countries/eras/aircraft themselves, but this might give me enough to substitute, etc.

Also, going to quickly ask this before I do some more reading (which may answer it for me), but a couple of the cheap models I've built in the past have some fogging around the plastic canopy. What causes that? Is it where the plastic cement has touched it? Or is it from the fumes of the plastic cement as it's evaporating? I've got some that have the fogging, and some other aircraft that don't. Maybe I just need to be more careful and not overuse the glue on those parts?

I still need to go full autistic and get putty to fill the gaps between the fuselage/wing sections, etc., gradually getting all the tools I need. I think Airfix kits come out pretty decent for the money, and compared to Tamiya I find the pieces, at least the fuselage sections, etc., seem to be thicker plastic and less prone to warping, so there's less issues with fit. Maybe it's just because all of the Tamiya kits I've built have been from the 60's and 70's, Tamiya's tanks are still unrivaled though, at least from what I've built.

dont use styrene solvent based cements when you are attaching canopies unless the canopy has been treated with a clear coat of acrylic. The fogging is from the fumes bouncing around on the inside of the canopy.

You're better off buying paints as you go, in fact you can order individual paints off ebay if you want. The Vallejo sets tend to have paints you'll never use. Or just buy them from a model shop, if you're in the UK I can recommend a couple.

Like the other guy said, if I'd buy them individually, I'd be paying twice the price for every single paint because the shipping is usually the same price if not more than the item itself. That, and the other reason I've had reservations about painting, is that I don't really know which paints I need for a model before it arrives (especially if they aren't Tamiya, some of the Tamiya products have it listed on the site), I'd have to go around ordering the paints after I get the model itself, which means lots more waiting.

I'm not an expert in Japanese fighter planes, but you will need a primer (if you don't have an airbrush, get a rattlecan. Anything works here, but Tamiya sells their paint in spray cans too)
Then you need your colors. Be sure to pick up some "generic" colors like plain flat black, brown and metal as well as the actual colors of your plane.

Depending on the quality of the kit you might want to have a little file (your sisters nail file could do) and/or fine sand paper ready. But since its Tamiya that is not needed in the most cases.
Same goes for putty to fill potential gaps. Tamiya kits fit well together usually.

If you are painting with brush, make sure you thin your paint down to apply several thin layers.
If your paint is to thick, you will see the paint strokes which looks awful on big, flat surfaces (like the wings)

If you painting without an airbrush you should always brush in the same direction. If you change it during painting it will result in an ugly mess.
Also thin your paints and let them dry completely after every layer. You have to use several layers of paint to get deep and good coverage.

It is, but since you haven't build anything at all at this point i rather suggest building and painting a few models first. If you like that hobby then you can invest into an airbrush.

Yes there is. Airbrush will give you a move smoother surface, because it uses way less paint. Also its pretty easy to create a good camo simple because you can mask your vehicle and airbrush it.

Not that guy, but the first (and only) time I've tried to brush paint (with Revell Enamel), I had a horrendous time. It wouldn't cover, and trying to brush more on just moved what was already there around in streaks, as if the plastic was hydrophobic or something.

I don't do any painting, as you can already tell, but it seemed like my paints were already too thin even after not doing any thinning.

What was I doing wrong? I've been really hesitant to try doing any other brushing because I'll just ruin another model that looks perfectly fine unpainted, until I can get an airbrush.

I'll admit I didn't prime the surface but I figured priming just improved your finished product, not that it was absolutely mandatory if you actually want to get the paint to stick to the model. Maybe that was where I was going wrong.

On an unrelated note, are there any recommended tweezers and sidecutters? I'm not a woman so I've never bought tweezers before, and £6+ for a a single pair seems insane to me, so I want to get something that's suitable. Precise, thin 'nose' and should I get the ones that are cornered forward? Any links in particular? Same with sidecutters, preferably on Amazon as I have Prime.

The 1/48 or the 1/32? I did the 1/48 as airbrush practice and it was an all right kit. I wasn't impressed by the cock pit detail. The canopy didn't fit all that well and seemed a bit undersized. It was a fairly cheap kit so I think you'll do all right. If you are in the US, you can pick up a lot of the older 1970s 1/48 Revell kits for $10-15. I'm doing their P-51 currently.

I'm from round your neck of the woods.

For model shops there's:

MJW models in Morpeth (online only pretty much but really good prices especially on Eduard stuff).

The North East Model Centre which is just outside Chester Le Street on the A167. That sells loads of paints (Vallejo, Tamiya, Humbrol, Revell, Lifecolor, Mig Ammo) and tools as well as kits.

Models4Hobby which is mostly online too but has a unit on an industrial estate in Ferryhill. More limited paints and tools (Tamiya stockist mainly) but lots of model selection.

Gladstons in North Shields. Proper old school shop. Does everything from wooden ships to R/C plans (and will even cut keys). Can be a bit pricey at times though.

There's more but these are the ones I use.

I also have an old compressor that I don't use any more that you can have if you like. Since it's Christmas. The non-return valve is a bit dodgy which is why I bought a new one but it will do until you can afford a new one.

Progress on the M110a2. Hull's together and half of the tiny shit is glued on. The assembly for the gun is done just not secured yet. There is no breech plug so I'm going to attempt to sculpt something in the future, it's stock as just a flat door, typical.

You need to be careful with those cupolas. Painting the entire thing in a lighter blue/gray might fix it, because cleaning those clear parts should be next to impossible.

Besides that it looks pretty well considering the fact you painted it with a brush.

Dry fit and if it doesn't fit, sand it down until it is pretty good. If that fails, use some filler.

You put the decals directly over the paint. I can tell because of the silvering from the backing. Decals were made to go over gloss so after do your base coat, do a gloss coat, put on the decals, then a gloss coat over the decals before weathering to protect them. Paint on insignias got chipped to and they got dirty. Once you are happy, then give it a dull coat to seal it all in.

Did you look at the engine? Shouldn't it be grey? Also the interior of the cowl was probably interior green and not white.

Otherwise it looks pretty decent for a 3rd model. Keep at it and you'll improve.

You should really use some masking tapes to get clear lines, especially on the cupola.
What kinds of colors do you use? Looks like enamels. For the wheels the gloss doesnt look very good.
Also you should add some chipping on your plane with an aluminium color.
When you want to apply some washes just apply a coat of a acryl glossy varnish. Then add the wash and when you finished add some matt varnish.

If its anything like Hobby Boss KV-1 in same scale, you are in for a good, solid kit. I even liked the link and length tracks that came with it, which are IMO a lot better compared to for example Hobby Boss T-34/85.

Like earlier anons said, its a shame it didnt come with grilles for engine deck, but towing cables made out of copper wire were a nice touch.

Its an T-34 in Egyptian service during 1956 conflict,I was not sure if it was this exact submodel of T-34/85 that was delivered to Egypt or were there some changes made, but I liked the look back then and thought that I need something different between all the soviet green armour. I remember the kit coming with some arab decals but im not sure if it was for egyptian armor or some other country.

Here is a pic of interiors, Hobby Boss T-34/85 kits in 1:48 come with complete interiors, that you still end up covering with hull unless you figure a nice way to leave kit openable.

Yeah, I read that colors varied a lot, since different factories used different mixing ratios, fading in the field etc.
Well, i did find this nice picture showing the process for good weathered green look.

Why would you look at a green surface and see orange at all?

It's a filter, changes the hue of the green to make it seem worn and used, doesn't actually make it orange.

I hid my model aircraft building hobby from my best friends for 3 years and I only told them because I was leaving the area to move to another school, this was when I was 15. I was completely shocked when they found it cool. I thought model kit building was a nerdy thing to do.

Basecoat done, used mixture of Tamiya XF-60, 61 and 67 for basecolor (didnt measure how much of each, went with gut feeling). From here ill start gradually lightening the colors until desired effect.

Airfix Gnat- Had a few cock-ups.

Airfix Bf 109G-6 is going fine, needs some filler and I need to buy a paint set.

I started the Komintern. I have the cab and back bed thing done, and one part of the suspension. I will have to run some thinned down filler into the gaps in a few places.

Added first shading. Hard to figure out when enough is enough when it comes to adding highlights and the model starts to look stupid.

Now, I've painting the individual pieces before I cement them together, is that right? Or should I cement then paint? Because I've been noticing it's sometimes hard to put pegs in holes if they've been painted already.

If it's the same colour, glue it together.
If it's fragile, paint it separate.

They are ready to run, although the circuitry is a bit fragile, when I was driving it one of them broke loose and the tank became inoperable, I soldered it back in though. Its still fun as hell to drive.
