Paladins don't have to follow a god, just an ideal. This has been the case since the first time they were introduced to DnD and only was fucked up by 4e rules and god awful Forgotten Realms setting fluff.

Hell, even in Forgotten Realms, the gods treat mortal souls like bargaining chips.
