What's your opinion on having music on during a campaign?
>>
>>55409791
I always use music in my campaigns. I have a ton of soundtracks from movies, TV shows, and video games, and I like to sift through those to put together a few playlists for different types of scenes, themed to the tone of the campaign. Or at the very least, I find a particular track I can loop for a given segment.

If I can't find something in my existing library, I search around online.

That sounds really nice.
Do the players ever find it distracting/offputting?
>>
>>55410543
Not him, but finding good combat music that isn't " EPIC FINAL BATTLE MIX FOR GAMERS," or something similar, is near impossible, no one seems to post simple fight music for encounters.
>>
>>55410784
Yeah, that's what I was having trouble with as well. There seems to be a massive surplus of excellent passive music and boss music, but nothing for simple encounters themselves that fits the nature of RPGs
>>
I like to use Fire emblem for non demon/undead etc fights

Even found some that are great for dungeons if they are of a magical or mysterious nature

Been experimenting with SMT for when its demons/undead

Oh, nice. I like both of those franchises, never thought to consider their music. Thanks!

>Constant Redbone in the background

Always glad to help. SMT is my favorite franchise and FE is my second so there are a few callbacks to them when I GM
>>
I think music is pretty key. I make my own music based on the theme of the campaign on FL Studio 12

care to share some and give us the context in which you used em?
>>
>>55411863
That's actually very cool. Feel free to share if you feel inclined.

I prefer ambient noise for any situation that isn't combat.
>>
>>55409791
Good to use for atmosphere and gags.
In one campaign my monk rolled a 19 on playing some his bongos to distract a tavern from another player blatantly stealing off the men he was playing cards with. We put on some jazz-bongos while the scene played out. By the end of it the crowd applauded and I convinced teh innkeep to pay me.
>>
>>55409791
It needs to be carefully picked. Good music will compliment the scene without distracting the players. In general vocals are distracting unless its something very low key like Gregorian chant. You need to know your players and know what might distract them as well.
>>
>>55410784
Some Video Games have good tracks for encounters. Ive been using tracks from the Witcher 3 for a while now with success.
>>
>>55409791
I usually only do it for cyberpunk games for several reasons. 1) Finding ambient techno or instrumental hip hop is easy, finding appropriate music for a fantasy setting that isn't distracting is much harder. 2) It can easily be justified as being music the characters actually hear as they sit down to meet their contact in a bar or as their walking down a busy street. 3) Having a laptop at or close by the gaming table is far less distracting when playing a sci fi game than a fantasy one.

I've thought about using soundtracks from nature documentaries as battle music, some of it can be up-beat without being too EPIC - Planet Earth 2 for instance... otherwise, Heroes of MM 3 has really nice combat music, and so does TESOblivion

It's a shame that Roll20 won't allow us to upload our own musical choices. Gotta go through sites like soundcloud
