You really only need about 250-350k for your deck.
You really should only need one rating 6 agent which you can't buy at chargen anyway, so wait on that.
You can usually just buy 1 or two cerebral boosters for 30-60k.
An arm of god + machine pistol/smg. 50k
Programs 10k
That leaves you about 20-50k for whatever else you want.
>>
>>55372821
Yeah, that was in reference to the dude who wants to be a Prime Runner AND Rigger.

50k isn't even enough for street level rigging.

Use a commlink pseudo-deck at chargen (around 20k nuyen). Hint to the DM that you want to upgrade to a proper deck ASAP, but you couldn't afford one and not gimp yourself.
As long as your GM isn't a complete shitheel he will silently thank you, because you just gave him material for several runs with the plot of your decker either getting enough cash to buy one, or stealing one off the back of a truck.

Congratulations. Player and DM working together to make an enjoyable game for everyone.

CGL is a shit company that releases mediocre products, case in point their 5th edition Shadowrun books are so poorly edited than half of them don't even have a worthwhile table of contents.

Also their senior staff were involved in massive fraud, stealing money from freelance writers and embezzled to fund home renevations. They then launched a disinformation campaign to hide the truth, and anyone that helped them had their characters written into Shadowrun canon.

On a side note, I just realised that I have over 1,800 non-cheese Shadowrun-themed character imagessaved on my computer. I think I need to stop.

>>55373717
>If you can buy a deck why are you even running?
That is a very good question. Ware and Deck prices are enormous, big enough that many GMs either don't give you access to the Spider's Deck or make it self-destruct, simply due to the fact that 10% of an average deck is more than most runs pay.
Most sane GMs cut the price of decks and ware in half
>>
>>55374075
>Not at the point of doing 500k+ payment runs

The point of decks being so pricey is that they technically allow you to access the Matrix undeterred and to be a threat to megas. If they were super accessible the entire thing would be pointless.
>>
>>55374156
>the entire thing would be pointless.
What does that even mean
>>
>>55374173

Clearly allowing people to interact with a major part of the setting is something that shouldn't be allowed unless they spend a staggering amount of money on it.

Sorry I'm having brain farts today.

What I mean to say is that cyberdecks are a rare and specialized commodity. The Restricted rating means that to have one you need a license as a security spider or as a security contractor for the matrix.

A cyberdeck is not something kids buy (forget devgrl) for the hell of it. It's a very specialized micro computer capable of running top of the line programs. People who use cyberdecks either work for megas as spiders, high-end programmers (and even then) or as matrix technicians.

To make a comparison more apt, a cyberdeck isn't a home computer. Commlinks are smartphones and computers put in one, cyberdecks are hyper-specialized piece of hardware.

So the price is explained in it's definition, it's a specialist tool for accessing the backdoor of the matrix.
>>
>>55374075
Is that actually a common houserule? I might be able to sell my GM on it, but I don't want it to cause problems with other prices later (like commlinks). Either way, let's say my decker had to burn down his hidey-hole and he's having to work his way up. What's the best way to hack on the cheap that won't get my crew killed? Are modified speciality decks a good idea?
>>
>>55374287
All of that explains the restrictions, not the price.
>>
>>55374397
The price is explained by the abilities the deck gives you.

Having both attack and sleaze is unique and would require a special system for it to be possible. Just by raw an attack dongle at rating 6 is over 100k. Now you can have one dongle at a time on a commlink but if you could have two it'd be 200k+ minimum and you'd still have no program slot.

Say a program slot is 50k per slot. A rating 4 deck has approx 200k worth of program slots, plus an attack and sleaze capable board of minimum 200k. And those are all approximate numbers.

Also maybe the price is that high because it's a seller's market and the corps don't want every script kiddie to be able to steal paydata or fuck with their hosts.

Sure. Sleep now, various cybercuties later.
>>
>>55374519
Damn!
>>
>>55374453
sure, that might be a logical explanation. But it also leads to players saying
>Fuck man, why are we even running if we could just steal some Deck and get more money than from other runs?
Which leads to:
A) Them not focusing on the run and instead on the Spider
or
B) Trying to take the deck but being denied (e.g. Self-Destructing Deck)
or
C) The GM having to jack up Run Rewards to give them a reason not to focus on the Spider (and even then they will likely want to steal it for additional money)
>>
>>55374566
It also leads to them being pissed when they have to change ownership of the deck they stole and contend with the clusterfuck that is ownership rules.

A self-correcting problem.
>>
>>55374566
The main problem with what you're proposing is that the decker is on site.

Security spiders are never on site, they're always at the nearest corporate arcology or enclave and under security.

It's been in the lore that way for a long time. Same reason Security mages are also never on site.
>>
Why not just have fixers or johnsons lend or rent out a good cyberdeck for the duration of the run? you can still have a decent cyberdeck for most operations and save up for your own personal deck

Because fuck those guys in particular. If they actually paid their employees it would be one thing. But they publish material without having paid their freelancers, cancel books after first drafts have already been completed and refuse partial payments, and are a bunch of embezzling cunts.

And, on top of all of that, most of their books for the past year or two have been fucking garbage.

Have them switch into a new genre without knowing it. Either noir, or pulp, superhero, or crime drama to name a few. Then run stuff for that.

Doctor N. Erjee has used stadowrunners & stole diamonds being used for research by Horizon, the fixer calls the players big red commlink. Will they foil the evil Doctor before he uses the diamonds to punch a whole in the background mana count & fuck up everything?

A body full of wax was dumped in the alley behind a bowling alley, a Lone Star detective hires the players who he has dealt with before. Wacky banter & quirky characters help the team solve the case.

The Man with the Monowhip struck again, him & his army of CFD freaks have expanded their territory selling more & more of that new Novacoke , this time he has killed someone close to the players, hey may deal with crazies & kingpins all the time, but this time its personal

Of all the Hosts in all of Emerald City she had to jack into mine... a thin little sprite with fractal code that drew you in, made you feel big as a giant & small as a flea at the same time. I hadn't seen her since that night in Paris 5 years ago. She told me she had a run. A man did her wrong. Stole some fancy tech piece she inherited from the girl who made her, who set her free. Same situation, PCs are a street sam, face, rigger, and infiltrator. Fixer sent them on a datasteal and gave them two single-use comlinks. First one would fuck with security at the lab, with better effects the closer they installed it to the network security room. One of those gives me a great idea.

Runners are hired to investigate a toxic dumping, happening in a scenic river or lake next to a park frequented by a wealthy neighbourhood. Lets go with Bellevue.

The news media is making headlines of these guys.

> "Eco-Terrorists Pollute Seattle's Most Scenic Lake"

they say.

It's surprisingly easy to track down the people from the leads they're given. They find themselves in a nasty-looking (and smelling) part of the barrens, filled with industrial waste and abandoned factories.

First, they meet a girl similar to pic related. She would remind players of a nutty, coal-burning SJW, but even edgier because cyberpunk.

Then a genial-looking troll fellow comes along.

> "Suzy, who are these people?"

> "Hey, you have to call me by my codename, Flies with Eagles!"

> "Yeah, Suzy, that's never gonna catch on."

He walks up to the runners, introduces himself, gives a nice, firm handshake, and explains what they're doing.

> "This waste was dumped here illegally in the first place. But since it was dumped here in the barrens, no-one cares. The way we see it, we're just taking something that was already illegally dumped, and illegally dumping it somewhere else."

> "This stuff has real consequences; people who grow up around here end up getting cancer in their thirties. For orcs and trolls, our lives are already too short."

> "When we demand that this gets cleaned up, no one listens. But when we take it to the enclave of the rich, the rich complain, and it gets cleaned up right away."

> The plan was to just dump as much of the waste here into the rich people's lake as we can, so it can finally get cleaned up. But it would be really great if we could use this to get the message out about our cause. Would you be willing to help us? We can't offer much, but you'll have the gratitude of our network."

Would your runners help them, /tg/? Trick question, your murderhobos probably wouldn't even let this exchange happen.

Would you say it's balanced? The thread it's from, most people agree that decks should be cheaper (and clearly better than hacked together commlinks in every respect) but that's the only solid numbers I could find except 'double what an equivilant RCC does' and the latter has some obvious problems even to me.
>>
>>55382661
I'm also still interested in cheap cyberdecks. For all you decker players, what would you say was important in a deck and how low could you go with one? Assuming B Attributes. Assuming you're modding it to Increase Matrix Attribute and using Overclocker to add another.
>>
>>55382682
The problem is that everything is important in a deck, for every of a deck's characteristic will be important in some circumstances:
- High Device Rating allows it to take more damage and operate in more noise
- Having all four MA allows to use all matrix actions
- Juggling the attributes around makes you more versatile.
- Running programs and/or an Agent also makes you more versatile

Playing a decker in 5e is less about having the best tool for the job, but getting the most mileage of the one you can afford.

If you have "B" money, you'll probably get the most mileage out of a Hermes Chariot. The Novatech Navigator is a better deck, but will eat up all of your resources; you will want some 'ware and gear instead.

>Is there an Italian mob in 2076?
Not exactly. The Mafia of Shadowrun is an alliance of Italian, Irish, Caribbean, Jewish, and other crime families, who banded together in order to resist the spread of the Yakuza. There's the amount of internal drama and infighting you'd expect between families like that, but they present a united front against external threats.

They're present in every city in North America, most cities in Europe, many cities in South America and Africa, and only the biggest cities in Asia.

They own the entirety of Sicily, which they've incorporated into a AA megacorp, so the Mafia can and does own extraterritorial locations across the entire world.

What would be the best AR for a gun bunny adept who is shooting 16 dice at a target and plans to abuse called shots like a motherfucker, the inception or the rainforest carbine.

The colt gives me 10 damage with -1AP at 11 accuracy with RC of 8-9 and 36 shots. The Carbine gives me 11 damage with -2AP at 9 accuracy with 7-8 RC and 18 shots. Reloading is no problem for me due to qualities and adept powers.

Is the extra accuracy worth the tradeoff in damage and AP?
>>
How do called shots work in 4e?
>>
>>55384402
>16 dice
You're going to get, on average, 5.33 hits. An Accuracy above 7 is meaningless for you.

Don't take the Rainforest Carbine; an Assault Rifle without the option of fully-automatic fire is just missing the goddamn point.

Get yourself an Ares Alpha - or an AK-97, if you want to pick up the Yamaha Raiden in play. Legality doesn't matter with an assault rifle, because if you're going to have it in view of the cops, you're going to be committing crimes anyway.

>gain +1 damage per -1 to attack, for a maximum of +4/-4
>take -4 to disarm someone with a shot; if your modified DV beats their Strength, they drop it
>>
>>55384493
Alright second question. What about those weird hybrid sniper rifles like the crockett how does an alpha compare to them? I asked what the best AR was because I'm comparing them to a longarms adept who could transition between overwatch and moving with the team. And also having a sawn off shotgun for when things get a bit too close.
>>
>>55384661
EBR has more AP which is more important for called shot. No full auto is a bit of a downer but you can still 6 round burst.
>>
>>55384661
If you want a Longarms-based AR stand-in, I'd get an Enfield AS-7, personally - a fully-auto drum-fed combat shotgun. You need a weapon to be fully-automatic if you want to do suppressive fire, you see.

>I'm pretty sure there is a cyberarm that can hold a weapon for you. Maybe take that but make it only cost nuyen? I think I saw a way for that once but can't find it right now.
It wouldn't be too hard to mount a weapon on something like an Aztech Crawler and then have it ride on you like a backpack while shooting people. The base stats of the drone wouldn't really matter, since you'd be using Logic+Gunnery when doing AR targeting.

A Crawler can receive a Light-sized, externally visible, flexible, remotely controlled mounted weapon for 2 mod points, and 1 additional point for an ammo bin, letting you slap an SMG or Super Warhawk with a 250 round ammo bin on there. If you wanted to make it a shotgun or something instead, you'd have to sacrifice the ammo bin to do so.

Add on Gecko Tips and extra point of armor. You'd have your choice of also including one of Chameleon Coating, an Articulated Mechanical Arm, or a Smuggling Compartment for extra utility.

Maybe some Touch Sensors too, if you go with the mechanical arm.

If you get it a Targeting Autosoft, it can roll a dice pool of 8 when you're not controlling it manually. More if you get the Autosoft for a smartlink. If you get a Body Armor Bag, you can put the drone in there for safe carrying, poking its arm(s) and sensor suite out when it's shooting time.

Make sure you take lots of Mechanic + Logic for repairs, aside from the standard Gunnery + Logic. If you can eat a -4 penalty, you can do a lot of repairs without having to purchase expensive repair parts too.

Not that repair parts are particularly expensive for a Crawler. They'd run you 200 nuyen per box being repaired. The benefits of starting with a model that only costs 4k nuyen.

All in all, if you decided to get the Light turret, the Crawler, Gecko Tips, +1 Armor, the Body Armor Bag, and, say, an Ingram Smartgun? You'd be looking at 9.9k nuyen, plus ammo and whatever device(s) you're using for AR. 11.4k with Gel Packs.
>>
>>55387185
>>55387515
Would you be riding in the vehicle at the time? Because there's nothing that costs 10k or less where the people in the vehicle are going to come out of an impact unscathed.

>>

>>55387525
Smart Firing Platform, Gecko Grip. Stick it to whatever you want.
>>
>>55387693
do you use the original speed chart or the revised one?
thing is:
When ramming someone you do Damage equal to Body * (Multiplier), where the multiplier is based on your speed, with -6 AP and which is resisted with BOD+Armor. Average armor is 9 (Armor Jacket) or 12 (Armor vest), so they will on average roll 3 and 6 dice respectively and get 1 and 2 hits on average
Let's say the average person has BOD 3 (higher of course for Orks, Dwarves and Trolls) and an Armor Vest, so 3 armor dice
That means that you need to do 10+2, or 12 hits to kill someone with this. You will then take half of that as well. And here it diverges:
>OLD RULE
under the old rules you start at Speed 1 with 5 m/CT and double to get to the next step. So to kill someone you need either
>BODY 12 and at least Speed 2
>BODY 6 and at least Speed 4
>BODY 4 and at least Speed 6
>BODY 2 and at least Speed 6

>NEW RULE
the author of the vehicle section said that all these numbers were supposed to be abstract but that CGL added the exponential speeds behind his back. IIRC he said that you should just multiply the speed of the various vehicles with a multiplier based by type, which for Vehicles is 30 km/h (or 25 m/CT)
So there we'd need
>BODY 12 and at least Speed 1
>BODY 6 and at least Speed 2
>BODY 4 and at least Speed 4
>BODY 2 and at least Speed 6

My second favorite is consolidating the condition monitors. Instead of having separate Stun and Physical tracks, you have a single track that fills up with both, that way having a mix of Stun and Physical weapons in the party isn't counterproductive.

My third favorite is making hacking work like normal skills - you completely chop out cybercombat, Hosts, and marks, and instead just have a straightforward 'make a roll, have an effect' situation. Want to open a door? Just make a single dice roll. Want to disable an alarm? Single dice roll. Trying to get data off of a server? Standard extended test.

And as for the Synaptic Booster? It costs a whole fucking hell of a lot more nuyen than Wired Reflexes. There's an opportunity cost to that. Synaptic Booster 1 costs 95k nuyen. For 95k nuyen, you can get Wired Reflexes 1 and still have 56k nuyen left over for other shit.

It's the better Initiative booster functionally speaking, to be sure. But when you have to choose between just an initiative booster, or an initiative booster and 50k nuyen worth of Agility or Soak augmentations, you start seriously considering the budget option.
>>
>>55395888
Because shooting at someone full auto with APDS will always the cheesiest of options.
>>
>>55396027
The Ares Alpha is illegal, a whole lot harder to hide (you can fit a monofilament whip in a finger) and yet people still use them. And I'd debate the flashy bit as it's supposed to be a monofilament it should be barely perceptible, though running it wirelessly will make it potentially visible in the matrix. It also would make a hell of a lost less noise than a gun.
I'd also argue the Synaptic booster is not better overall than wired reflexex because wired reflexes can be stacked with reaction enhancers giving you a slightly better initiative and defence values. Synaptic booster is only better in that it's less detectable being bioware and less essence intensive, leaving you more room for other stuff.

Use Edge to stage down the glitch from critical to regular, so you can ignore it. Like someone with half a brain would.
>>
>>55396521
Still happens, you still have to deal with it and that's an edge you could've used for something else. Not a deal breaker but worth considering.
>>
>>55396637
Of course it's not a deal breaker. Critical glitches are rare as fuck, and you're talking about a weapon you're going to be proficient in. aka; dice pools that don't often lead to glitches, let alone glitches with zero hits.

I'm making an Ork bruiser and cant decide between then giving them a tricked out cyberarm with cyber spurs that will cost me 90k or just giving her a sword and pumping that 90k into 'ware. What would be better?

Also do all spurs have to look like shitty wolverine claws?
>>
>>55398509
>Also do all spurs have to look like shitty wolverine claws?

Nope. Hand going up/down and huge blade coming out of palm/wrist are just as popular options as Wolverine-style claws jutting from a closed fist.

As for your first question, it depends on the role you want to take on. High base stats and 'ware boosting those is generally better for a character whose primary role is fucking shit up, whereas the "Hand of God" is better for a character who wants to contribute meaningfully to combat in those occasions they're not busy hacking/talking/driving/ hunkering down in cover/...

>And I'd debate the flashy bit as it's supposed to be a monofilament it should be barely perceptible, though running it wirelessly will make it potentially visible in the matrix.
'Flashy' as in you leave people on the ground like cold cuts. The effects are extremely distinct and very obvious. You leave a corporation's hallway covered in cleanly-sliced man-bits and you'll get a much different reaction from dropping a few bodies the normal way.

There is a visceral reaction to the particular type of gore that the monowhip produces.

I'm not saying that the monowhip isn't a great weapon. I'm just saying there's loads of perfectly sensible reasons for people to choose not to use it anyway.

Also, I'd argue that the extremely, dramatically lower essence cost, the lack of need to activate them, and the inability to detect them on a cyberware scanner makes synaptic boosters by far the better initiative booster. The option to - with wifi on only - add an additional +3 from other augmentations doesn't even come close.
>>
>>55397115
You random-roll some extra nuyen at the end of chargen based on your Lifestyle. Spend 100% of your chargen resources; you'll get a thematic amount of spending money at the end anyway.
>>
>>55398509
Cyberlimbs are a bad choice for orks, trolls, etc, because of how hard it is to actually get good stats for them. In order to get an Agility 6, Strength 9 cyberarm, you'd be looking at 13 Availability, which means you'd need to take it as Used or Omegaware just to have a good baseline limb.

If you want to have a cyber-blade, get a Partial Cyberarm instead and use it for the Spur/Armor, while using your meat stats as normal. You can put a Spur, Armor 3, and a Shock Hand all into that Partial Cyberarm, and the only thing the partial's stats would ever be used for are things like raw grip strength or lockpicking precision. Things that exclusively involve your stats from the elbow down, and not the rest of your arm or body at all.
>>
Do you guys ever discuss the maintenance of cyberware in your games or is just something that's 'done' in the same manner as eating, cleaning, shitting, etc.?
>>
>>55400230
>or is just something that's 'done' in the same manner as eating, cleaning, shitting, etc.?
This. In the same way that eating only comes up when you're starving and shitting only comes up when you're trapped somewhere without access to a bathroom, cyberware maintenance only comes up when it gets damaged during play. Otherwise, it's just part of normal Lifestyle activities.

Except when slice-of-life vignettes come up. Scenes where the adept gets woken up by a phone call at 2am saying that he needs to get to a bar downtown by 3:30, so there's a brief scene where he has to pay for 5 minutes of hot water at his hotel shower because he's not willing to have a cold shower that early. Or scenes where, during a stakeout, the crew all gets a bunch of soykaf and krill burgers, with the fake cheese described in such a way that most of them decide to try to scrape it off before continuing. Or two crew members chatting it up in the bathroom, but it turns out that while one is applying mascara, the other is doing some quick maintenance on her cybereyes, with motions that look identical from behind.

It's worth remembering, too, that most cyberware is self-maintaining because it's subdermal. Cybereyes, datajacks, and cyberlimbs all have external access, but things like wired reflexes or bone lacing are entirely beneath your skin. The only way they're going to get physically worked on is by going in for invasive surgery to gain access to them. That's one of many reasons why nanomachines are essential to cybersurgery, and why 'ware prices spiked sharply after the whole CFD bullshit.
>>
>>55400392
>The only way they're going to get physically worked on is by going in for invasive surgery to gain access to them.

Getting cosmetic surgery to get more attractive literally increases your maximum Charisma. This isn't D&D, where Charisma is just a measure of your personality - attractiveness is a canon component of it.

That's the entire point of Metatype Reduction and Troll Reduction - you get prettier, so you have your metatype limits on Charisma removed.

I was thinking of some really awful place, sort of like Black Lagoon's Roanapur, thriving with pirates and traffickers of all sorts. They do? Why? Because of the high priority? They've got amazing attributes for a combat character.

The beauty of lower leg/arms is that you don't have to upgrade their stats, especially lower legs as you don't do a lot with your feet that doesn't involve the upper leg in some way.
>>
>>55411392
Pretty much, they have a hard time capitalising on their stats because they have to suck up a B or an A on metatype, so they're kind of under-resourced.
Also melee is less effective than ranged combat so the high strength doesn't do that much for them Agility Reaction and Intuition are actually far more important to general combat effectiveness than Strength or Body.
