It isn't "seductive" as in you want to fuck it, it's captivating as in "hey what about a carefree life free of constrains where you can do whatever you want?". It's the convention breaking pretence of freedom of the thief life that appeal to those who romanticise it.
Until they realise that the pirate life isn't fun or free, that is the end of the turn.

Aren't pirates seductive by nature? Do what you want. Hurt and steal and get rich quick. See lands you wouldn't otherwise. Get more STDs than years you'll likely live. Surrounded by men and uggos so the tavern wenches you bang on land will be that much more appreciated. Rape potential.

>>55352497
I think half the reason Enthralling Victor was so popular was that Red hadn't gotten a seduction-based card before. It felt really fitting in the color, and the flavortext was less blatant.

Honestly, it feels like they were trying too hard to mimic it. For pirates, it's the sort of card that really needs one person swooning in the arms of another while they swing on a rope or something.

No doubt that would be too dynamic and difficult for Wizards to pull off though

I can see where you're coming from with this. Maybe they wanted the mimicry to seem intentional, as in, like a callback?
And I agree, we could use some more rope-swinging in general so far.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/ixalan-the-return-of-magic

I think I'm gonna play Standard again after Ixalan releases. It felt familiar and exciting like the sort of MTG that I played back then, but I wasn't able to tell why until I read that article.

Make MTG great again.
>>
>>55352620
Of course they wanted it as a callback, but all that does is force people to compare the two. And when the second isn't as good when trying to go with the same idea of 'pretty boy standing here, person looking in awe over here', then it raises the question of why they tried to paint by numbers in an attempt to get lightning to strike twice.

They needed to have it at a different angle. Him more clearly shirtless and swinging on a rope would have been great, and it would also help set it apart from Enthralling Victor in terms of artwork while still having its own appeal. Making it a woman would also be a distinct possibility, and I have no doubt it would be a very popular card if it was a woman swinging on a rope with a woman swooning in her arms, although I doubt we'd get a card that fun with new Wizards.
>>
>>55352642

NO 1 MANA COST DINOSAUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From today's development article, "Developing a Tribal Set": https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/card-preview/developing-tribal-set-2017-09-12

"As I was working on the set, that meant making sure that Dinosaurs showed up at all sizes and all places on the mana curve. You will find Dinosaurs between two and eight mana, and the small ones don't need to be babies—just naturally smaller Dinosaurs." --Sam Stoddard
>>
>>55352750
no, they're just overly situational in all magic so the minor flavor boon isn't worth keeping them evergreen.

Like I said, badwrongfun. It's like Shroud. Landwalk abilities are too complicated for NuMagic Player's tiny brains. "wuh... a mountainwalk can be blocked by... another mountainwalk?!? Me no understand! Me angry! UNGA BUNGA!" I'm surprised they still let flying be around.
>>
>>55352802
>"wuh... a mountainwalk can be blocked by... another mountainwalk?!? Me no understand! Me angry! UNGA BUNGA!"

>Landwalk abilities are too complicated for NuMagic Player's tiny brains. "wuh... a mountainwalk can be blocked by... another mountainwalk?!? Me no understand! Me angry! UNGA BUNGA!"

Apparently you don't understand it either:

>702.14d Landwalk abilities don’t “cancel” one another.

>Example: If a player controls a snow Forest, that player can’t block an attacking creature with snow forestwalk even if he or she also controls a creature with snow forestwalk.
>>

It looks fun though
>>
>>55351828
is this garbage?
>>
>>55352802
>too complicated
but that's not even the reason why they stopped using it. it's the fact that it just straight up doesn't matter that the ability exists a significant percent of the time. it's not even related to complexity, it's just poor design.

>>55351995

>>
>>55353016
The most important thing are playable cards, because if they fun but unplayable....well that explains itself.
>>
>>55352880

Well thankfully we'll never have to worry about it confusing us ever again, because it's just too complicated to exist. More +1/+1 counter abilities please, wizards!
>>
>>55353051
Not really. As long as the set is fun, that at least means limited is fun, which is one of the more important things even if in the context of other formats the cards are mostly garbage. Granted, the two sort of go hand in hand, but I would say that the set being enjoyable comes before power level.

Color hate in general isn't stupid. They're good for sideboard cards.
Having multiple keywords in every single set, that every person has to know (regardless of how easy they are) is just plain stupid - either the card is overcosted trash (even for limited), or it's on par and randomly wins games because it also fucks over people just because they picked Color X.
>>
>>55354772
Vampires are the good guys, Angrath is the villain.
If I've learned anything from past WotC storylines, this will end with the vampires and aztecs unifying forces vs Angrath and Vraska's crews and then the vampire queen (who will be retardedly powerful) landing to destroy the artifact (maybe with aid from Ajani) so that walkers can't have it and in the blast are expelled from the plane.

Temporal travel is not that easy in-universe in Magic. And for two planeswalkers to do so at roughly the same time, to go to a plane we've already been to (were the vampires don't look the same and have no problems feeding on people other than 'heretics and foreigners') so it's obviously been an extremely long time, all for...what?
What does Ixalan being Innistrad bring to the table? Other than 'they have vampires' and people wanting Jace to be stranded several thousand years into the future when they know full well Wizards won't do that.
>>
>>55356152
>>55356262
Yeah, that raises more questions than it answers. Just because one is in a slightly earlier time period and both have vampires doesn't suddenly make them linked. Notably though, they are both planes we know of where they have multiple continents with us only having seen one, but that's about as far as you could stretch it.

And unless it leads to were-dinosaurs, there's no real advantage.

Ixalan is basically One Piece world with two major continents. The Vampire church took over the first one and are coming to claim the islands for their queen. The Pirates are fleeing from the vamps in order to flee being turned into bloodbanks and to make a new living on the high seas. Merfolk and the Sun tribe are two different groups native to Ixalan that have been fighting one another for a while.

Vampires want the Eternal Sun so they can live forever without relying on drinking blood, Pirates want it because it's treasure, and Merfolk want to get at it so they can hide it from everyone else. I forget what the sun people want it for.

1-mana mana dorks has nothing to do with with NWO.
It has to do with Development being a bunch of chickenshits and using 'muh limited' as a constant, neverending excuse for their behaviour.
Also, it's Brand that won't let them kill planeswalkers, Creative is the group that WANTS to kill them (and did, with Venser). Also has never had anything to do with NWO.

The rest of the deck was like, 4 lightning strikes, 4 magma jets, 4 stubborn denial, 4 anticipate, 4 temur charm and some amounts of Rattleclaw Mystics, Whisperwood Elementals and Crater's Claws that I can't remember the number of.

You didnt even play magic during the long dominaria era.
Hell, you played with modern-frame cards only.

Nah, the Planar Chaos frames were the best.

>>55359235
Lol, I got into Magic early 00 and stopped following it after Time Spiral, I didn't even know what Innistrad was 3 weeks ago when I got back into Magic thanks to Rudy.

To me the modern art is ugly as sin compared to what I was used to.

You are factually wrong and too stupid to recognize it.
>>
>>55359235
I'm probably the youngest one here (I turned 18 this June) and I really don't care that much. If wizards wants to not print eye candy because of tumblr then by all means let them make granny characters. It doesn't change the fact that:

1. The card can still be playable and amazing and

2. Most of the girl planeswalkers (characters we see time and time again) are still not touched in terms of being "progressive," and all of them (even arlin kord) are rule 34 worthy.
>>
>>55359355
They do look pretty good.
Man I miss the Timespiral block, one of the must fun I ever had with magic. Nice meta, fun shenanigans to do with th new cards, all these weird-ass effect and mix of abilities from different blocks..
>>
>>55359382
But we just had some wee wuz planewalkers, no?
Bh I stopped playing during BfZ since the game is so fucking bland and I Legacy is pretty much dead around here.
>>
>>55359371
>To me the modern art is ugly as sin compared to what I was used to.
The exact same thing was said about the art in the sets you started out playing with.
>>
>>55359293
Draw a believable female pirate, not a granny that can't even stand on her legs, let alone guide merciless, scum pirates. It's stupid. Not even One Piece is this naive.

Draw some hot pirate with one leg, or with only one eye or some shit like that.
>>
If you think that mtg as ugly art these days just look at yugioh, hearthstone, etc. We still have some of the best even if its a bit more boring than before.
>>
>>55359384
Great as it was, it unfortunately confused a lot of people, and is part of what lead to the dread acronym discussed above.
Best block of all time, and while they'll never do it again as an actual expansion, they've said there's the possibility of doing a Time Spiral-like supplemental set (in the wonky mix&match cards and whatnot)
>>
>>55359416
>Not drawing a hot female pirate with a wooden buttplug
>>
>>55359382
>1. The card can still be playable and amazing and
If Magic was a card game it wouldn't have such an enphasis on art. It's a collectible card game.

If the art is shit, I don't buy it. I want to buy it.
>>55359396
And they were right. As time went on the art of Magic got less and less interesting. Maybe it got initially better, to finally became garbage with the advent of CG but it had less appeal.
>>

>>55359434
I didn't play back then (I didn't even know how to read when the cards came out) but I have to say if I started during time spiral I would be so confused. I love those cards now, but I'm glad they weren't the first cards I ever saw. I'm glad New World Order exists but it's sad that people keep blaming all of their problems on it.

The cutoff is the moment you see card effects from the first set you started with recycled in the most recent set.

For me, that was Thorn of Amethyst. The moment I saw Thalia I thought, "I'm old". Then came Vryn Wingmare and I became ancient.

I suspect Wizards knows that, they know that they can start to recycle mechanics in about 4-6 years because that's typically when most players give up.

2011 was a weird year. No one really knew why Wizards released exactly three cards, all creatures, but it was clear that everything that came out that year -- all three cards -- had the objectively best art ever.

For some reason they abandoned the "three cards a year" rule until this year, when they again released exactly three creatures and nothing else at all. This time, however, the art was objectively the worst art had ever been.

How things have changed between these two years in which a total of six cards were released.

Leftards can't argue with proof, logic is opressive and you can stir all the fee fees with hyperbole and "sarcasm" instead.

Hell at this point I firmly believe the left-leaning playerbase is the vast minority because I keep seeing mtgtop8dotcom tournament results from Brazil and Phillipines with 40+ players but last time I was in the west coast FNM was just 16 people at Card Kingdom the largest store in fucking SEATTLE one of the supposedly largest gaming cities in the USA and where the game is made.

If WotC listened to what LGS owners and tournament organizers have to say instead of social media retards who never buy anything other than their overcosted caffeinated drug from the mermaid place, we wouldn't be seeing so much shit art and people like Mohrbacher, Swanland, Spears, Ortiz and Gregory wouldn't have quit Magic.

Setting: Ixalan

Color: Red creature associated with the Brazen Coalition

Location: In the Pirate floating city, in an open area (maybe once the deck of a ship, or several ships lashed together), with torches and lanterns surrounding it, creating a festive atmosphere

Action: Show a handsome male Human Pirate, a dashing rogue rather than a muscle-man. He stands in a sort of flamboyant pose, extending a hand to the viewer as if inviting us to dance. We might see a couple behind him already dancing, and perhaps a musician as well.

In addition, a male Ogre sits behind him, looking at him with star-struck admiration, as if hoping to be picked next for the dance.

Focus: The handsome Pirate

Mood: Festive, exciting

Note: This card is very similar to Enthralling Victor, and we're aiming for a similar sort of vibe to it.

Ixalan is somewhat original, in that the original Conquistadors didn't have to deal with pirates or merfolk or dinosaurs. I think in Seattle the only two places left selling singles are the two Card Kingdom locations. It's partially because of online sales but it's also because 95% of cards in product are useless outside of Limited. First it's singles then sealed sales will consolidate to online markets or retail outlets like Walmart. Rents are increasing, putting strain on stores who dedicate space for play i.e. space that isn't being used to make money.

My local store is completely done with singles. The average yield from a box is somewhere like $20 in singles not to mention the labor it takes to sort, store, and manage singles.

Fatal Push has brought more people into FNM but look at what Wizards is doing, they're further splintering the local player population's available time by offering TWO different days for Magic when they could barely fire a regular FNM on one day.

I seriously cannot look at Magic and say anything (significant) has gotten better. Contents are more and more recycled effects, promos have been getting worse, prereleases finally went back to regular Sealed without some stupid seeded pack (that's not an improvement given that they used to be just that), prices have went fucking insane with no abatement, Commander is the premier selling product, and Masters sets have year after year refused to deliver on the promise of getting cards out to players.

Even now, people are saying, "PIRATES AND DINOSAURS". I'm sorry but if you think that pirates and dinosaurs are what are going to save the game you don't fucking get it.
>>
>>55360286
>Ixalan is somewhat original, in that the original Conquistadors didn't have to deal with pirates or merfolk or dinosaurs
Are you fucking kidding me? If thats your threshold, real ancient egyptians didnt worship a dragon, live in a zombie apocalypse world in a safe bubble, have ram headed minotaurs (I dont think there were naga, as in snake people, either but maybe Im wrong on that one), have people turned into crystalline super soldier mummies, a society where everyone fit went through trials in order to die honorably and everyone else turned into servant mummy automatons...

We've already looked at Shadows, Amonkhet, and if you would like, Kaladesh, and compared them to original Innistrad. If you want you could try any other set before original Innistrad.

>We've already looked at Shadows, Amonkhet, and if you would like, Kaladesh, and compared them to original Innistrad.
You fit all those on >>55359666 that tiny image? Maybe I didn't zoom in enough.

>>55360431
Well, my threshold for what? "Original enough"? I guess so. Amonkhet was really obviously borrowing from Egyptian mythology, but it's not like they didn't do anything with it. My biggest disappointment was how SMALL the plane felt, it being just one big city in the middle of a fucking desert. Kaladesh was worse in this regard, though, because it HAD other cities, it just didn't care about them, and they didn't do anything at all with anything from Indian mythology.
>>
>>55360512
And Ixalan is very obviously borrowing from the period of time its based on. What the fuck is the difference? The whole point of Amonkhet was that it was blasted deadland with only one known spot protected by their beneficent god pharaoh. There isnt anything inherently better or worse about that, especially since it is in fact implied that there places unknown out there, and it also has nothing to do with "originality" as you originally implied was the issue by citing Ixalan as being "somewhat original" in comparison.

Also the story of Kaladesh block was about fucking Ghirapur.

I've opened up entire block visual galleries and had a look. So I'm sorry that I haven't compiled them into a huge image but clearly you haven't because you're still blindly refuting statements that are accurate for anybody who is looking at the entire block.

So I'm sorry you cannot open up the entire visual spoilers to see our points are correct and have to resort to attacking someone who cherrypicked some images that happen to accurately depict the situation we're discussing.

By the way, I agree they did nothing with the Egypt aesthetic. But guess what, just like their de-sexification of their depictions of women, that sloth has been evident in every block going back to Theros.
>>
>>55360627
I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue. I think it's fine that Wizards borrows from real-world mythologies when they make their settings, and I find a lot of their "original" settings kind of lackluster.

>strictly better

>>
>>55360672
Dont pretend to be dense. You know exactly what I'm arguing. If Ixalan is passable "original" because its the age of exploration but with dinosaurs and vampires, very nearly every premise for a plane they've had has to be "original" enough save for maybe, like, Theros? And even that has cat people and a race of relatively sentient zombies and shit.
>>
>>55360656
Continuing with Eldritch Moon specifically and dropping the sarcasm: Bloodhall Priest, Sigarda's Aid, Splendid Reclamation has some Nissa titties even if they're not the focus, Oath of Liliana and actual Lili both feature cleavage. And if you're a leg man, there's a bonus from Voldaren Pariah. Whoa baby.

Should I keep going? I should really be doing something productive instead of looking up MtG titties to prove somebody wrong on the internet. I don't want my roommate to get ideas.
>>
>>55360737
Oh, well, yeah, I agree with that. I think that pretty much all of the planes Wizards has been doing these days have been "passably original." It might just be that I have low standards for originality, but IMO as long as something isn't obviously and shamelessly derivative (as in a literal copy with names filed off and replaced and nothing new at all), I guess I'm fine with that, yeah.

I'd like to see more new, weird planes, don't get me wrong, like I'd really love to go to, say, Equilor, and I'm sure we'll go there eventually. But fantasy does have to have grounding somewhere, and grounding settings in real-world stuff is totally on the table.

I'm a regular fag and still thought it was hilarious.

Honest answer is no, but at the same time even if I did, I'd rather spend it on Conspiracy.

Point of interest, does not have defender, you can send your monkeys in for raid.

In Innistrad-Dark Asencion there are 29 cards featuring women who show cleavage and/or thighs.
IN SOI-EMN there are 18 cards featuring women who show cleavage and/or thighs and 9 of them feature either Gisa, Liliana or Avacyn.

>I really don't see any reason to play Standard once Arena is online unless you're a PT hopeful.
Or because you like playing with the people at your LGS.
>>
>>55361388
By the way ISD+DKA have 442 cards vs SOI+EMN's 502.

In KLD / AER, Nissa has the monopoly on visible cleavage - on her intro deck PW card (not Vital Force).

In AMN / HOU, Liliana gets the only visible cleavage. At least she gets it on her regular PW card instead of the intro one.

SOI / EMN have the following "stand-outs":
Asylum Visitor, Heir of Falkenrath, Vampire Noble, Sanguinary Mage. The last two are the most overt.

That was clearly a man before they decided to change it, which is probably why they made her old.
>>
>>55361801
Yeah, my mom would kill me if I drew her fat in a professional illustration.
>>
>>55361801
What makes you say that? Her face looks pretty feminine to me, and I'm not sure what kind of evidence of a "change" you're talking about here.

>What the fuck, a good blue card?
Nigga where have you been for the past week. Blue is the support color this set.
>>
>>55361930
The face is definitely feminine, but the whole head including hair was clearly added on after the body was done. Everything between the shoulders and the hat looks like a slightly different resolution and doesn't totally fit

>One tribe and a jank build makes it a strong contender for best color
>>
>>55362334
No, Opt, Spell Pierce, better mana leak (pirate) and 2 mana divination make it a contender for strongest colour especially with favourable winds being far from a jank build with the options available to it in this standard.

What's wrong with recycling mechanics? That's part of what happens when you have colors that have mechanical identities.
>>
>>55359620
Weird. Whenever I see recycled mechanics that they haven't done in a while, I'm always excited to see them again. Like, tax effects are neat, and they don't pop up that often, so whenever they appear again it's kind of a neat little "Oh, hey, I remember that mechanic. Let's see how it interacts with all these other mechanics that are in vogue now." Because usually the results are different, you know?

Like, Raid isn't a great example, but it was WBR in Khans of Tarkir, and now it's UBR instead because it's fitting the flavor of pirates raiding shit (ha, they didn't even need to change the name). And, characteristically, they're doing different stuff with it, where it isn't necessarily tied to a static effect, and you have Raid guys who check each turn to see if you attacked, and stuff like that. That's cool, for me to see how these things can evolve and get new life.

How has no one mentioned how stupid all of those ropes in her look?
>>
>>55363535
It got brought up in a few of the earlier threads. She got spoiled awhile back.
>>
>>55363535
I think the rope pirates look cool as shit, but I actually didn't notice Brass was one until now. I kinda of thought she had all the different pirates crews mixed in with her. Turns out she's the rope pirate captain. I can't tell which Captain Storm is. The belts and buckles pirates?
