40k was a mishmash of anything its original creators thought was cool, misinterpreted by a new generation of authors who tried to turn it into an Americanized progressing story instead of a tonal setting for a table top role playing and battle game, and then created a load of new characters with nothing to them except 'generic good hero space marine', 'untrustworthy aline good guy' and 'generic bad guy space marine'.

It's a Space Opera in that the current story is melodramatic, simplistic and comes off like episodes of a soap opera.

But Opera and Soap Operas are very very different.

Operas are self contained stories.
Soap Operas are endless, farmed out, and made as cliffhangerish as possible to guarantee continued viewings.

40k is not a deconstruction of anything, it's rather a continuation of 1980s heavy metal aesthetics, British style absurd humor that grew serious because that was even funnier, and shameless (and thus funny) ripoffs of other franchises.

Actually if there's one thing that 40k isn't, it's Space Opera. Space Opera is about a grand over-arching plot, usually following the suffering or trials of one character or a cast of characters. 40k is a setting, not a story, it's a place in which stories occur.

LOTGH is a space opera. 40k is a world in which space operas occur.

40k was more of a metal-fueled reaction to star trek-style utopian sci-fi which was popular in the 60s and 70s
