Is there any way to shrink/clone a 54mm miniature into Heroic Scale that does not involve modeling the mini in 3d software?
I'd be fine with shrinking it down to 32mm.
>>
>>55342575
The fuck kind of question is that? You got a shrink ray, nigga? You think you can use the shrink and enlarge tool in real life? Is your mini made of grows-when-wet rubber dinosaur material?

I am planning doing some modelling in blender or autoCAD to make a prototype weapon for one of my imperial guard dudes. some kind of "power rapier", which i will then scult or 3d print. and if anybody could give me some general tips about power weapon design, I would love to hear them

also does anyone else use 3d modelling for their custom pieces.

this might be better off as on /gd/ or /3/ but I'll post here about it first

I used a bit of foam and roughed it up a bit, using whatever colour you're highlighting the section with (in this case wild wider red) and liberally apply with the sponge. After this I used Dryad bark and cover most of it up, leaving it showing at the bottom. Finally put some metallics in the middle.
Hope this helps.
>>
PLEASE HELP
I want to make a carrying case for a Temepstus Scions project I'm doing as a gift. If I buy some kind of magnetic sheeting and line a box with it, then put something metallic on the bottom of the bases will this work? How strong are the things on amazon? This seems like a cheap and easy solution if it works. Anyone do this?
>>
>>55343401
That reminds me of something I've been pondering: How would one show Alpha Legionnaires throwing off their disguises, so to speak? The simplest method would be to paint the initial force as Loyalists and the reinforcements as Alpha Legion, but that seems lacking to me.

Showing their paint peeling off to reveal Alpha colours underneath, maybe? But I'm not sure how to do that. Or having some kind of transitional effect where the colours switch, like they have some kind of cloaking device which is failing?

>>
>>55343294
Imo you are probably better of if you use a piece of wire for a rapier.
For other kind of weapons you could definitely do that, but you have to consider that you need a minimum material thickness for most pieces and if you even get it to look right with printing it will be probably rather fragile.

>>
>>55343524
if it doesnt fuck up the undercoat you could always use that paint chipping medium with the undercoat being alpha legion blue and whatever you wanted on top
>>
>>55343524

Just have the hydra tattoo under their helmets.

Just hanging alpha legion flags and shit ontop of whatever symbols they have one their armor currently.

You could even go the Sci-fi route and have it be digital paint or whatever and paint them half-way through changing color.

>>55343481

Amazon has a huge range of things dude. I'd suggest lining the box with metal and putting magnets in the bases-- tiny rare earth magnets are the usual recommendation-- but I admit I don't know how much thin sheet steel costs. Craft store magnetic sheeting doesn't tend to be very strong though. Try looking it up on YouTube first?

First time painting wraithguard, not really sure how to pattern them. Most official examples have the body one entire color and the head a secondary one but that feels kinda weird to me.

I did a few practice patterns to see what works or not, I really like fuchsia and black as a color combo and eldar seems like one of the few armies that can make it work.

So yeah, any of these pop out to you guys? Any patty I could change to look better?

Garden of Morr? I've been thinking about getting a couple of those.

This crypt I just happened to tag on to my latest Reaper order because it was designed by the same guy who did all the Undead I ordered.

I haven't opened the GW kit yet, do you know if the interiors have detail? I'd like to leave the roofs unglued so games can have people go inside them.

I'd probably get it anyway because it has the same motif as my Witchfate Tor, but it'd be cool if it did.
>>
>>55343982

Far right (black/white/pink) and second from left (blue/white/red) look best; the other two have poor color distribution--not enough white on far left; not enough variation on legs on second from right, and that one looks like it's wearing Mickey Mouse gloves to boot.

I think second from left has the best color scheme, but that's partly because I'm a bit sensitive and can't stand the hot pink against black. Far right is actually the most striking design.
>>
>>55344428
Yeah that's pretty dead on with what I was feeling too. I really like the far right one but I'm worried about how much black there is. It kinda looks like I was to lazy to paint it so I just picked one color. Also I feel like some of the details get lost. Maybe some hilights or even more skeleton designs like what I did on the ribs would work too.

Hey mate, the best way to do what you are trying to do is actually to do it the other way atound. Line the box with some sheet metal and put some small rare earth hobby magnets underneath your models. PVC piping meant for plumbing. I got it from a generic hardware store. There's tons of different connectors too. I did have to sand it because of very obvious moldlines and text, and the pipes are very smooth normally which wouldn't help paint or glue staying put.

There's the usual dark grey, a nearly white colour, a bluish grey and a yellow type. Should I treat these differently?

Pulling together various sources for fluff inspiration, such as Ralph Bakshi's Wizards, early Zelda enemies, so I'm planning to get more ambitious with the conversions as I go on. This guy is just a boy (I have 50 second hand ones to paint up and green stuff hats onto) so I wanted to focus on speed and ease of painting rather than super detail.

Managed to get the start to finish process (excluding drying time for the wash and glazes) to under 1 hour.

I think its pretty good.

Now then; Warpaint. Yey or Nay? (I initially didn't want warpaint; but the more I look at it without warpaint the more I think it might be a good idea)

As its s test boy, why not? Warpaint doesn't have so much cowboy flavour, but as a general wild west theme, it fits as a crossover between cowboys and indians.

I imagine wild west orks, being orks, would get 'being cowboys' wrong, and mix it up with stereotypical 'indian' aesthetics as well.

Speaking of those i'm not entirely sure what colour to do them, i'm thinking the round bits in the middle will be gold to match the grate in the middle of the chest but i'm not sure if I should leave the outer metal bits the colour they are now or do them gold to match.

That's just a normal steel colour with several washes of Nuln Oil.
Sand tone/off white, I would suggest starting with a brown and go lighter.
For weathering, you can use a sponge.
>>
>>55350566
Zandri dust and karak stone will work.
Then if you want weathering, eshin grey or rhinix hide spattering.
>>
>>55350566
If you look up desert camo armour modelling tutorials there'll be trillions for that kind of thing since it's incredibly common for military modellers.
>>
>>55350724

Yeah. I just had an idea though; I think I'll save the warpaint for some "feral indian boyz" (counts as kommandos)

As for painting its really a very easy process:

Undercoat black.

Skin:
1. Paint the Skin Warpstone Glow.

2. Wash with 50/50 black/brown wash (I used this on the whole model, so wait until you have the base colours on all the cloths etc)

3. Drybrush skin with Warpstone Glow (Completely optional, the model in the picture doesn't have it. But I plan on doing it for nobz and higher up ranked orks)

4. Paint whole skin area with Waywatcher Green Glaze.

Cloths:

Used a "palette" of colours; 2 different blues (Thunderhawk Blue and Enchanted Blue), 2 different browns (Steel Legion Drab and Dryad Bark) and a bone colour (but I didn't use it on this boy).

The idea is to randomly assign these colours to different parts of the models cloths. (I got this idea from an old white dwarf where the painter gave tips on how to make a cohesive but disorganized looking force.)

So:

1. Put the base colours on the cloths.
2. Wash with the 50/50 wash when you wash the skin and metal.
3. Drybrush to create highlights (optional, again didn't do it for this boy)

Metal:

1. Drybrush Leadbelcher
2. Wash with the 50/50 wash when you wash the skin and cloths.
3. Paint grime (Typhus corrosion) into the recesses of the gun (top of the magazine, vent ports, dials etc.)
4. Very light drybrush of Ryza rust.

A very quick process; but yealds good results I think, especially for the time it takes.

Painting miniatures seems like fun

Does anyone have tips on how to get started?
I'm wondering what some cheap and easy to paint miniatures might be, so that the risk of fucking up would be minimized while fucking up wouldn't be too big a deal either

Also, any advice on dealing with shaky hands?
Is there any hope for me or should I just forget it? Paint miniatures drunk?
>>
>>55352838
I supposed you could get some beta blockers/propanalol if you are looking or a pharmaceutical solution to your hands.

But other than that it's just down to picking something you like and practicing painting it, I have a fair bit of experience painting Orks and feel I'm pretty good at it, but if you gave me a unit of space marines I'd have to spend a while looking up and testing techniques.
If you paint something and it looks like shit it doesn't matter, because you extracted experience from it.
>>
>>55352838
Steady hands are just something that comes with a lot of practice and failure. My best advice is start simple: get some cheapo models like Reaper Bones and just start painting those.

They look good enough that you'll be able to tell when you're making progress, but cheap enough that you can afford to fuck up with them. And you gotta fuck up to make progress. Yeah, they're gonna look bad at first. No getting around that, and that's okay.

Wattup /tg/, Batanon here. I've something different for you guys today.

My younger sister asked me to give her a painting tutorial today.
I figured she'd be pretty good at painting (she's really good at drawing) but holy hell, was I impressed.

Pic related:
Her first ever model (the one on the spider on the left) and mine on the right (I used it to demonstrate basic techniques).

Less than 2 hours of painting lessons and she's already capable of pulling off close-to-tabletop standard. At this rate she'll be better than me in no time. :D
I'll post more as we gradually keep painting them.

I know this feel but I like to think I know the value of my minis after I paint them and I try to care for them with the same amount of effort I put in to making them.

They always tend to get nice comments when I play them at my lgs but it drives me fucking nuts when some greasy guy just grabs them to look them over in a rough manhandling way.

Posted this in 40kgen by accident - I know using Stormcast for terminators (assault termis, in this instance) is old hat at this point, but I wanted to vary up my Minotaur's a bit. Pic related is what I have in mind so far - I'm just trying to figure out the shoulders. They're a prominent part of the model, so they need to be easily recognizable as a space marine, but I am unsure if standard terminator pauldrons would fit properly.

Shapeways has a slew of different types available, but I'm hesitant to pay their prices if the damn things dont fit. Any suggestions? I've got other bits and such I plan to glue/sculpt on to give the impression of powered armor, but those fucking shoulders are throwing me off.

I know that feel bros.

Speaking of which, I'm having a pretty hard time finding a good varnish for my guys.

I've tried satin and matt sprays before, and they tend to take the shine off the parts painted with metallic paints (they just turn grey).

I was thinking about buying 2 seperate varnishes, one gloss for the metal parts and a second one for everthing else, but that seems like a lot of work.

Have any of you dealt with this issue? Can you recommend any good varnishes (preferably the ones I can apply with a brush, I've had bad experiences with GW's purity seal), perhaps some type of a "clear" varnish? (I don't know if something like that even exists though)
>>
>>55353919
A little bit, it's a little redder than the normal fleshy pinks, so it works well as a shade, but shouldn't influence the higher points too much. It does dry quite matte though, but all non-gloss shades do.

>Does anyone have tips on how to get started?
The old how to paint miniatures book by GW from around 2000 is a really good primer to get started. I has thorough explanations on all sorts of painting techniques, color theory and a few handy tips for coming up with color schemes. Loads of step by step tutorials as well.
If I could recommend only one book it would be this, cause it's easy to understand, accessible and pretty comprehensive. The newer GW books tend to be a bit too pushy with their products and also rather specific only to them, cause of the way GW makes their paints these days.
There are other books by CMON or stuff aimed at historical painters too, but the old GW book really hits the sweet spot between display quality and mass army painting.

>I'm wondering what some cheap and easy to paint miniatures might be, so that the risk of fucking up would be minimized while fucking up wouldn't be too big a deal either
Stay away from newer GW sculpts. Too much detail and too expensive.
If you are into fantasy minis you can check out Reaper Bones.
Northstar also has a nice range of fantasy and scifi miniatures for various games.
If you are into historicals check out Perry, Gripping Beast or Fireforge.

>Also, any advice on dealing with shaky hands?
Brace your hands against each other while painting.
I usually have my forearms or wrists braced against the table and at least one finger of one hand pressed against the other. I don't shake unless my hands get tired that way.

>Is there any hope for me or should I just forget it?
We've even had people with nerve damage here painting. Just pick something that works in your favor, like dipping if it's too hard.

>Paint miniatures drunk?
Bad idea. Trust me.
>>
>>55353099
You'll surprised how much you can change with the paintjob later.
It's really not looking bad imo.

A hobby knife and a needle are a really good start in terms of sculpting tools.
You can do most of the stuff you need with those too.
If you are serious about sculpting check out amazon you can get some wax carving tool sets pretty cheap. And clay shapers are really useful too.
>>
>>55353142
Tell your sister she is awesome.
>>
>>55353712
to be completely honest I think stormcast are a bad choice for terminators. They don't look anything like terminators at all.
You could pass them off as primaris marines, but not termies.
Unless you plan on putting the terminator armor back on them, but then you can't use the helmets anymore.

Imo, you'd be better off if you take some of these new plastic termie kits that came out with the HH boardgames and put convert some blood angels chest plates onto them, if you want the sculpted musculature.

However if you really want to use them I guess you could just saw the pads off and just put a blob of GS in there to get the volume for the shoulder before putting the pads on. Then you could cover the transitions with some sculpted fur or leatherstraps like on the cingulum thingy.
>>
>>55355434
Those are very valid points, and some of the worries I was having. However, after looking at the sprues (the shoulders are separate, thankfully), and checking out various different shoulder pads from terminator sets, I think the slimmer, longer pads might work perfectly. Sculpt some cabling, something for the back, and I think I could play them off as Artificer-armored termies. Or they'll look goofy as fuck, but we'll see.

Fluff-wise, I figure being the pet chapter of the High Lords would net them access to more esoteric gear, hence the oddity of their armor.
>>
>>55355554
>and I think I could play them off as Artificer-armored termies.
In that case I'd try to emulate the look of the Grey knight Aegis suits. They don't have to cowl up over their head either, but they still have the vents on the back.

Anyway post some pics, whatever you decide to do, I'm curious how they'll turn out.
>>
>>55354419
>Freehanding symbols on your first minis
Well, you've got guts.

1. Use primer. Most primers are good enough so don't feel like you need to buy GWs. If you can't spray, try hand-brushing gesso.
2. Thin your paints. Put some paint on a palette and then add a tiny bit of water.
3. Use multiple thin layers instead of thick layers.
4. Watch Duncan's tutorials on how to do things like white over black and eyes.

>>55352838
Practice painting on one of those bucket of armymen from Wal-Mart or the like. Even 'cheap' wargaming miniatures cost a 1$ each these days.

>Also, any advice on dealing with shaky hands?
Brace your arms against/on the table.

I was thinking of going for like a more German World War 1 infantry, or Nazi Zombie kind of look with the fellas, just because the prevalence of stick grenades and spiked helmets among Plague Marine units, but I dunno how Nurgle-fying Death Korps of Krieg Models would look.

if you're capable of converting/sculpting it'd look awesome, if you're not sure or if it'd be your first project I would't recommend messing with expensive FW stuff.

I'm not even that good at painting at the moment.

I lovz your kitbashes mate. They're easily recognisable, notably because of the recasted yellowish parts.

I do think you should add a shoulder pad on the most left guy's bare arm though.

I rate the Anvil Industry bionic leg though. They told me they were going to remake their SM range to add the primaris sized items, can't wait for their new bionics.

If I may anon, SC for Termies will probably look weird. However, if you want Spartan SC, their flying dudes have lances, and pic related to see if it fits. I used the same heads at home but don't have the pics. But it fits.

Why did you take a picture of an empty table?

Does anyone have an image of an Ogryn/Bullgryn beside an ork nob or ork boy or space marine or any basic infantry please?

I don't think blood really works with the buzz saws, surely any would just fly off if it's constantly spinning. That aside I like how the boyz have turned out

How would I go about making a duck egg blue/green from citadel paints? Pic related.

Inb4 shill
My town only sells GW paints and I live in the middle of nowhere. Can't be bothered waiting for online shipping either.

Just eyeballing it, you might try a very thin green wash over a dark grey basecoat.

Try dropping a comment on Migs' blog, I'm sure he'd be happy to share the actual recipe.

Dark reaper or maybe incubus darkness thin coats. Very thin green glaze or shade. Possible highlights with thunderhawk blue or kabalite green or a mix of some of those. Experiment with some of those dark green/blue/grey citadel paints.
