In fairness, orcs would be that in general if they'd ACTUALLY been based on the mongols in any way but saying that Tolkien mentioned that. When was the last time you saw orcish mounted archers?

That's why I hesitantly used added the "sorta". Because frankly, due to the lack of cavalry archers and the reliance on infantry and all orcs are usually very not-mongolian, but everyone still somehow says that's the culture they're supposed to be "representing", because clearly every fantasy race must be a stand-in for some real life one and you can't make them black people without being called a tryhard fedora.

The Mongols had pretty terrible footsoldiers, with most of their military focus going into mounted combat and skirmish tactics. Won them plenty of battles and let them conquer vast sparsely-populated steppes, but in the densely-populated and civilized lands of Europe and Asia where you needed infantry to occupy lands, they just couldn't win because their non-mounted dudes were poorly-trained and often horribly motivated and prone to desertion or theft.
