>>55292438
uh what
>>
>>55292406
You can use all the cards in the set, go brew a deck with mana drain now and use it next week at FNM!
>>
>>55292401
I'm informed that MaRo confirmed Steamflogger Boss is printed on the same sheet as these lands, meaning 120/121 packs will have a Steamflogger Boss instead of a land. Because they're on the same sheet as Steamflogger Boss, and Steamflogger Boss needs to have the rare foil stamp, all the lands have a rare foil stamp.

Which is pure bs, I know that's the sort of shit I do to my cube drafters when I throw Steamflogger Boss and Storm Crow in my Vintage cube but fuck my hypocritical ass that's dick move on Wizard's part.
>>
>>55292519
Hah. I'm new but not that new.
>>
>>55291225

>>
>>55292522
I still don't understand.
Is Steamflogger Boss a special card or something?

>120/121 packs will have a Steamflogger Boss instead of a land
Does this mean lands will be super rare? Because that's complete bullshit.
>>
>>55292670
You are legitimately stupid
>>
>>55292670
Boss escalated into a meme when Contraptions were never introduced in a real set despite the keyword on the card, last they were speculated to debut in Kaladesh. There has been some speculation around the card which WOTC is aware of.
>>
>>55292719
Or maybe you it's you who can't explain shit.
>>55292724
Okay, that's explains everything. There's still the matter of the lands being ultra rare.
>>
>>55292760
No, every pack contains a full-art basic, but 1 time out of 121 there will be a Boss instead of the basic.
>>
>>55292158
>>55292144
>>55292126
>>55292119
>>55292095
I AM FULLY ERECT
>>
>>55292670
No, it's because Steamflogger was originally printed in a set with a black border, which means it needs to keep that black border even in the Un set because it's a card that's technically legal in other formats. The only way to do that economically was to print it with the lands.
>>
>>55292760
Seeing as I didn't explain anything and understood the other anon immediately, no, you're just fucking dumb.
>>
>>55292509
You heard the man.
>>
>>55292789
That clears things up. The dude he replied to said:

>>55292890
To be honest I'm not sure either which way it is, but it would be enormously retarded on Wizard's part to make the basics practically ghost rare.

Alright, what do we know about the draft archetypes and what rares/uncommons to look for? So far, I think we can see allied colors, with W/G blink and maybe a 5-color defender strategy. A lot of commons seem to care about spellslinging, too.

>>
>>55293393
I'm interested that Overgrown Battlement is in the same rarity too, along with Fog Bank and Mnemonic Wall. I'm not sure how the archetype is supposed to reasonably come together if it is 5-color, but it does seem that flying will be a premium keyword outside of the rare slots. There's also a good bit of lifegain to consider too. I'm not sure how the aggressive Dragon decks are going to close out before people can stabilize. Maybe U/B mill is supposed to prey on that?
>>
>>55291225

How fucking tiny will the print runs be?
>>
Cost per pack/box?
>>
>>55293554
It is Temur. I don't know where people are getting 5 color.
>>
>>55293626
Looks to be quite sizable. People are saying that the drafts today still had product left over at the end, despite a big turnout. I expect something slightly larger than MM3, riding off the Timmy hype from the Praetors.

>>55293654
$9.99 USD MSRP, same as always. desu I get that they have to inflate it somewhat so that investors can't hoard sealed product, but $7.99 USD is perfectly reasonable, considering they've now worked out the overhead kinks for these sets.
>>
>>55293705
Any other 3-color archetypes, shard or wedge? I'm not sure what third color Dragons are going to want. Maybe blue for some early-game deterrents?

Now that the dust is settling, I find that this is just a Modern Masters with like five Legacy cards. Far from the "Iconic" we were promised.

This is NWO's icons, not Magic's icons.

It looks like fun to draft, don't get me wrong, but it feels like MM2/MM3 levels as opposed to MMA/EMA, where we have to make do with terrible spells for "balanced Limited formats" and to "avoid price gouging".
>>
>>55293334
Is this supposed to be good? All I see is a more expensive version of that other wall.
>>
>>55294658
>Praetors
>Kami Dragons
>huge amount of Modern staples
>Standard all-stars from as far back as Urza block

Looks pretty iconic to me. They're measuring by play rate in constructed formats more than anything else, although I too would've liked to see some more popular spells like Ponder, Daze or even Electrickery.

>>55294773
Walls with more than one power can be a bitch in Limited, and this one benefits from being blinked out. Pretty sure G/W blink is gonna be one of the draft archetypes, so this could be a huge overperformer.
>>

>>
>>55294955

>>
>>55294997
I'm imagining a dual/tricolor draft set with very heavy focus on the big cycles, like Dragonlords, Guild leaders, and possibly Eldrazi in the colorless slots, as well as some format all-stars and Gatewatch reprints
>>

It helps stop Faeries from uncontestedly smacking you, for one, as well as Delver folding hard against it. Your own Delvers and possibly Glint Hawk become extremely scary depending on how many artifacts you want, and you can run right over most Tron variants once Augur and Oracle become outwitted.
>>

>>
>>55296617
How about "sealed" packs that have five boosters, a land brick, and a spin down? Each player gets one and you're good to go.

Should siege rhino belong in iconic masters because it was a cancer in standard for several months? Does that count as iconic?
>>
>>55298887
Worse, they printed tons of garbage Khans cards instead of the actually iconic ones like Rhino or by favourite boy Big Meaty Knucks (Savage Knuckleblade)

Honestly WotC should stop using "It's meant to be drafted" as an excuse to print pack filler like Abzan Falconer. People fucking love Vintage Cube on mtgo and that's full of busted cards that tear draft formats in half. Busted crazy drafts are fine, especially when it's a supplementary set and it would facilitate a ton more good reprints.

The most apt criticism of it is that it's too on the nose. The old mana drain art is a raging dumpster fire that is nearly meaningless unless you just make shit up.
>>
>>55302351
Draining from where? A vortex doesn't drain anything, it just makes things on its way fly. Also it represents the vortex badly, the point of view makes you have a limited sight of what's going on.

All these are objective facts.

A vortex is a synonym for a whirlpool you pedant, so it is draining that shit into wherever it goes, assumedly into your mana pool.

The old art lacks action, you can't tell if the deflated football with tree roots is actively doing anything, it's just kind of there. This just doesn't fit with a card that is supposed to be about the action of countering a spell by draining the mana used to cast it into yourself. The new art is far from perfect, I don't deny much of what anyone had said about it, it just fits mana drain better.

>>55302605
I've already explained to your dumb ass that the new art doesn't depict where the vortex is draining mana from, together with many other things. Are you ignoring this on purpose?

Please explain to me how a vortex drain things. I'm waiting.

Also try to debate the fact that the depiction of the vortex is garbage. I'm waiting for that as well.
>>55302632
>A vortex is a synonym for a whirlpool you pedant, so it is draining that shit into wherever it goes
To drain you need to perforate, make holes etc. A vortex or whirlpool doesn't do that. Or you disagree?

Since when the lack of movement in art means no action or that the art is bad? The art depicts the action of a parasyte that infiltrated a land (the object that lacks in the new art) draining energy from it.

Can you improve on the old art? Yes, it's not motherfucking Michelangelo. But it's original and interesting and it gives a good idea of what the card does.

The new one reminds me of a Transformers movie.
>>
>>55302712
>I've already explained to your dumb ass that the new art doesn't depict where the vortex is draining mana from
The old art doesn't depict where the mana is being drained from any better.

>To drain you need to perforate, make holes etc. A vortex or whirlpool doesn't do that. Or you disagree?
Ok you're just flat out retarded and/or pretending to be at this point.
>>
>>55302727
>The old art doesn't depict where the mana is being drained from any better.
>what is the bottom of the sea

>Ok you're just flat out retarded and/or pretending to be at this point.
If you check out the definition of to drain you will see it's connected to these few concepts:
- a liquid being removed from the original source by either spilling, pouring, absorbing or channeling it through a pipe (the mana)
- the subsequent loss of energy (the parasyte)

Now, please tell me how the new art depicts all this.
>>
>>55301256
It's a shitty bland whirlwind. It's shit.

>>55298752
This has great color contrast, it has a bizarre abstract nature to it, and represents some sort of magical parasitic element draining something,. A million times better than the bland corporate board room shit they slapped on to the new one.
>>
Both art are shit.

drain
drān/Submit
verb
1.
cause the water or other liquid in (something) to run out, leaving it empty, dry, or drier.
"we drained the swimming pool"
synonyms: empty (out), void, clear (out), evacuate, unload
"a valve for draining the tank"
2.
deprive of strength or vitality.
"his limbs were drained of all energy"

>Now, please tell me how the new art depicts all this.
The new art shows some sort of red spell being sucked in by swirling water or something (almost like it's a drain, spooky!)

The old art is a bug thing on a sea floor that if you look at it for a few seconds you can get that it's sucking something out of the floor but seeing as this is a magic game about magic and this spell is specifically countering another magic spell the new art is a better representation of what's happening in every conceivable way.

If you want to complain about bad art look at the Vintage Masters art. Sure it works for a general concept of counterspell but this could be applied to pretty much any counterspell instead of specifically mana drain.
>>
>>55302712
>that the new art doesn't depict where the vortex is draining mana from,
From the very clearly seperate spell on the fucking right of the image, the spell you are countering.
You can be pendantic over the word "drain" but it's fucking magic, why must the mechanism that pulls the magic from one spell and into your mana pool need to look exactly like a fucking pipe?

> a parasyte that infiltrated a land (the object that lacks in the new art) draining energy from it.
The old art would be a better fit for fucking Power Sink than mana drain because that card actually interacts with lands, meanwhile the new art is very clearly showing one spell sucking the energy from another.

>>55302850
>>what is the bottom of the sea
Not a spell. You get the mana from the countered spell, not from their lands they already used for mana in the spell.
>>
>>55302890
Finally someone who's not retarded.
>>55302947
>mental gymnastic: the post
It's just a vortex. It's not even depicted in an interesting way.
>>55302960
>You can be pendantic over the word "drain" but it's fucking magic, why must the mechanism that pulls the magic from one spell and into your mana pool need to look exactly like a fucking pipe?
You're the ones who asked for an explanation and now I'm explaining it to you.
You can only drain liquid-like matter. Which apparantly mana is.

Sure, you get the mana from a spell, it's still a great artwork. Only you can see the spell in the new one, by the way.
>>
Is there anything contrarian autists won't get upset over just because it's old?

I've seen people legitimately try to defend that the old way of displaying modal spells was better, and then there's the big daddy of contrarianism, "I want mana burn back".
>>
>>55303095
>It's just a vortex. It's not even depicted in an interesting way.
Please tell me how a literal drain draining away a spell that you can see happening in the card is mental gymnastics but "This bug thing with roots in the ground" isn't.
>>
>>55302960
>>55302947
Also you could argue that if you counter a spell the mana cost for that spell hasn't been paid yet so mana drain doesn't get the mana from the spell.
>>
>>55303122
A vortex doesn't drain anything. Did you even read the definition?
Do you not understand the difference between pouring water or absorbing it via pipes and the action of a vortex on a liquid?
>>
>>55303101
>Is there anything contrarian autists won't get upset over just because it's old?
I have no idea, especially since it's a Hyalopterous Lemure tier artwork.

>>

Look up what a Lemure is, it's very specific.

It is definitely not a Lemur.
>>
>>55303323
>In Roman mythology, the lemures were shades or spirits of the restless or malignant dead
They never specify what they look like, just formless blackness. They probably could have done that as a card but I think they were just going for a joke in that it looks kind of like a lemur.

Or maybe they just had fuck all art direction back then and the guy thought the card was called "Lemur".
"Hyalopterous" is apparently Greek for "Smartest" but that doesn't really tie into the art that much.

New art is more fitting for a counterspell desu.
The original art isn't bad, but would probably work better on an enchantment. There's nothing interrupting/instantaneous about it.
>>
>>55303159
>A vortex doesn't drain anything.
Vortex: a whirling mass of water, especially one in which a force of suction operates, as a whirlpool.
>>
>>55303159
>A vortex doesn't drain anything. Did you even read the definition?
A vortex is CREATED when something is being drained into something through a smaller opening, especially with a lot of suction.
