I've been wanting a new army for a while now and I sort of narrowed it down to 4 choices (AdMech, Orks, Guard, and SM).

I kind of like Orks because of how scrappy they look, and I also heard some weird shit goes on with them.
I picked IG mostly because of the normal person look they have.
Necrons look interesting because they like regenerate and shit.

I guess if I had to really push for something I like, probably something that does lots of destruction, maybe explosives or something.

Aside from everything else, I only like the portrayal of the Primarchs when ADB or Abnett do it (excluding some random people's short stories). He at least gives them a sense of power and mastery that supports their legendary stature. When everyone else gets to close and has a plot focused on them, it's invariable cringy, underwhelming, and/or like show wrestling (though to be fair the last two points are spot on for Angron).

I don't know what you're referring to. His flashbacks of Curze in the NL trilogy is great, and his short story of Curze fighting the Lion actually made the Lion look knightly and competent (after the Lion was ruined in two books by different authors).

As for Angron, I remember some random story where Kharne tells the Word Bearer DMPC that Angron didn't have the same demigod aura as the other Primarchs, but that he was just fucking strong and angry. I thought of him as a broken Primarch since then, and it fits.

For green, yellow, blue, red, black and white, yes. But it's almost entirely just meaning the orks ascribe to the colours. Red paint jobs getting tangible benefits is a later thing.

Blood axes and kommandos use camouflage, but poor imitations of it, because they don't quite understand how it works. The purple ork shit is an old forced meme made by people who never read the three rogue trader ork books and figured everything about was lol magic colours.

>>55291199
Considering the current tendrils are the scouting fleets it is quite possible that as the rest of the Tyranids arrive there will be several larger hive fleets whose only purpose is to eat the weakened vanguard fleets, improve themselves and consolidate the information procured by the vanguard fleets and then spread that information across several other fleets by splintering into smaller ones so they are in turn eaten by larger fleets. Basically a way for several Hive Fleets to adapt to the galaxy without sacrificing bio-mass.

Either way Tyranids were never portrayed as this monolithic entity, they are bent on the sole purpose of feeding and that has always included other Tyranids from different Hive Fleets.
>>
>>55291182
Depending on who you ask, anything from 'literally everything about orks' to 'not even that red ones go faster thing'.

Basically, in 40k faith might be one source of warp abilities.
Orks have some kind of collective psychic thing going on, which seems to be directed by ork beliefs about how things should work.
According to some fairly unreliable sources, this might be what makes some ork technology work the way it does.
The effectiveness varies from 'psychic WD40' to 'if enough orks believe it, it beomes true, no matter how ridiculous' depending on who you listen to.
The only really well documented effect is red ork vehicles going faster than other ones.
It's not 100% certain that the 'red goes faster' thing is even accurate, since every ork vehicle is unique and the mekboys most likely to build fast ones are speed freaks and evil suns who have red as their clan colour.
It's also possible (although this has never been mentioned by a GW source that I know of) that there is something in whatever orks use for red paint (possibly a type of orkish fungus or something) that acts as a psychic conductor.

Colours other than red which are speculated to act as a focus for ork powers are
>blue
A generally lucky colour, actually has some support from GW as a colour orks think does something (Deff Skulls paint themselves blue for luck) but no mention of it being effective.
>yellow
Often described as giving things more energy, so used on power generators, explosives, etc. Completely fan-made association, as far as I know.
>black
Tougher and stronger. Another fan association.
>purple
Stealthy. Not just a fan association, but a joke. The gag being that 'you never see an ork in purple'.

>He at least gives them a sense of power and mastery that supports their legendary stature.

What, so they make everyone else irrelevant and turn everything into a soap opera? That's pretty much what I got from the Heresy books, despite being a Word Bearers fan. We know nobody else can kill or permanently injure a Primarch, so there's not even that small tension of "they might, in some crazy alternate universe, decide to hurt the Main Character".
The Admech seem cool there, they don't do anything really, nor do any of the tides of random Marines around the Primarchs. Titans are just there to knock down to show how cool and special the Primarchs are.

Honestly I prefer the REALLY old fluff where they were just regular Marines and the "demigods" thing is ten thousand years of Chinese Whispers, it made everything seem more in proportion.
Also, sticking Old Russ to the massive Primarch bases and his wolves to their huge ovals and using him in a game is silly and fun.

I wouldn't have agreed with this in the past, but for 8E, FW really isn't getting its shit together and are actively interfering with GW's actual efforts to constantly balance and improve the game.

It used to be both GW and FW were both retarded and FW shit wasn't even very commonly OP or better than GW OP shit, so no reason to ban FW other than "hurr no stamp" or "hurr FW not GW".

But now GW is actually trying to balance and patch the game but FW is still in hurrrrr mode and releasing shit that completely breaks the game because they don't know how to use the proper rule wording and never release FAQs. Imagine trying to play Starcraft as a competitive esport but Brood Wars had a bunch of retarded bugs that never got patched.

Who doesn't at least do a few of those sometimes?
I do know that most of the games I play tend to include quite a lot of us making up stories for our random models who managed to be surprisingly pro, arguing over what noise a Neutron Laser should make and generally not playing very quickly.
Someday I'll make a garagehammer table so I don't have to hog GW tables to do that, though. Family wants a pool table anyway, so making a board that fits neatly onto that wouldn't be hard.

Curze has his own deal going on leading a cult of warriors who barely understand him; Guilliman has incredible mental faculties to manage things and a vision firmly in the future. For all the shit they do, though, the fate of whatever's going on is in the hands of their Legions.
I agree that the soap opera bits are annoying. I don't like the Primarch duels even by the authors I stated because they always end in a hurried and effective retreat after one of them has 'won.'
While I wasn't around for and can't imagine the Primarchs-as-legends setting, I understand why that would be preferable but that's not what we have.

But I find that I still end up throwing most of it away. I seem to remember someone saying you could take it back to GW to be recycled once, but I've never tried it.

>Are there any other features of Orks that make them fun to play around with beyond that?
Absolutely loads.
Rivets possibly have a similar effect in terms of focusing their psychic energy according to some early sources.
They grow from spores. Spores also grow runts, squigs and 'fungus' for them to use. It's not entirely clear if they are all the same species which can grow into various different things depending on conditions, or a group or related species.
There are lots of different kinds of squigs, including hair squigs (orks don't actually have hair; their topknots are squigs attached to their heads), chewing squigs (no skeleton, so they can survive being chewed and spat out), oil squigs (look like a fat little elephant, used as an oil can), pipe squigs (can be inflated and played as a musical instrument) and so on.
They can survive almost any surgery, so painboys often do things like head transplants, squig-brain replacements and installing large metal plates just for fun.
There are humans who are so obsessed by orks that they start imitating them. The Blood Axe clan actually encourages this.

To clearify; the model looks ugly and nothing at all like a Daemon Prince. What they should have done instead, imo, is a more Fallen Angel/Angel of Death looking mini with some alternative parts so that people would also have the option to make it into a generic Daemon Prince of Nurgle. Heck, if that was the case they could have marketed it to both 40K and AoS like with the Greater Daemon of Tzeentch.

>>55291972

He does fight nurgle troops on a couple of occassions. There's a short story where he finds the girl's boarding school being run by a Slaaneshi cult, and it's being attacked by Nurglites. Then there's the audio-book Dead in the Water where he fights a squad of guardsmen who've fallen to Nurgle. They were Volstroyans though so it doesn't really fit.

So hopefully it is a new book, I had figured Sandy Mitchell had either died or had given up on writing for Black Library.

Spray primer saves you a lot of time if you have the right climate for it.

The 50mm marine from Inquisitor.
>>
>>55292247
Well, I personally prefer spray primers. And don't feel pressured to buy hobby primers - the best primer I've used has been Duplicolor Sandable Primer, and it's dirt cheap compared to stuff like GW's rattlecans.
>>
>>55292247
Every spray primer I've tried fucks my lungs, even spraying outside, downwind, away from me. Therefore I use brush primer, but honestly I wish I didn't have to, it's a really tedious extra stage in the painting process to brush prime each model individually. So, my advice is use spray primer if you can, young grasshopper.
>>
>>55292247
If you are the necron guy, silver spray paint + green and black is the easiest way to paint an army.

>>
>>55292247
Spray primer, easily. Only use brush primer if you have absolutely no way to use spray.
WHICH spray primer is still something I'm trying to figure out myself, since Chaos Black is expensive. I hear Rustoleum is good.

I will also say that sprayed basecoats are a godsend for speeding things up. Started Admech, did the traditional thing of botching my SC box as I learned how to do things and then got some Leadbelcher spray to use on top of the Chaos Black. SO much faster at basecoating and you don't have to worry about missing every tiny crevice with the brush since the spray and the wash will do it for you. I imagine that it would be even speedier for a faction that doesn't have Admech's almost 50/50 split between robes and armour like Marines or 'Crons.
>>
>>55292316
Temperature and humidity. You'll be fine for part of the year but may run into trouble at other times. That said I've found spray primer to be far less finicky than spray clear coat. Dealing with THAT shit in non-perfect weather is a huge pain in the ass.

What's worse is running Elysians versus Aggressors, where you can "slow-roll" each and every Lasgun shot, and every individual grenade shot, in an attempt to optimize the amount of damage done, and minimize wasted wounds.

Actually, you have to do each weapon profile in sequence. So the sequence is

You can't check each las shot and then say "Got a wound, so here's my first Krak grenade"

The base sequence is model-by-model, weapon-by-weapon, the only restriction being that if attacking two enemy units, you must split attacks between said units before you roll, and you must resolve attacks against one unit before moving to the next.

Are there any restrictions on when you can play Primarchs and such like I hear 30k has, or do I just need to come prepared with the ability to deal 12.5 wounds to T6 2+ 3++ every game? Kataphrons are REALLY not cutting it so far.

Andrew ran Guard, and Alan ran Chaos. He had a Dreadclaw from a different detachment with the Tzeentch keyword transporting Berzerkers. Then someone pointed out it was being used illegally.

Andrew rolls off to go first, Alan fails to Seize the Initiative, then goes "screw it" before the game even starts. Considering that there was a 1000 ameridollar prize for the winner, that's pretty sad.

I'm certainly getting a couple more Kastelans, although probably not until I get a look at the codex.

The thing is that it's not like I'm running up against meta Razorback or Conscript spam alongside Guilliman, it's just that apparently every Marine player including BAdude and GKdude decided that they needed to have the first Primarch back.

I can deal with a hueg pile of power armour pretty well with gravguns and phosphor bombardment, it's just that I can't quite do it fast enough to kill Guilliman two turns running before he hacks me to bits.

Currently list is basically a complete mishmash. Dominus, Dragoons, one Dunecrawler, 6 Gravstroyers, Kasty maniple and a couple squads of Vanguard with maybe some infiltrators thrown in there if there's room. Maybe I just don't have enough of any one thing to build a core around it, or maybe nab a Cawl to reroll BS4+.

feels more and more like Pay2Win to me, if you think about it. A playable army costs 300 bucks, with SC! packs. A competitive army costs 300 additional bucks for 10 models.

jeez, I pray to all gods other manufacturers do not catch on

> There are two modelling options for these weapons – one option features the weapons down by Mortarion’s side, the other features a much more aggressive pose.

How impressive. It's Dual Pose rather than monopose, woop de do.

Or you can simply rotate the arms with 5 seconds with a modelling knife.
You people are retarded, you don't even realize that most of oldhammer models were metal monopose, wich was an incredible pain to work with.

That was exactly my point, it's pretty much no effort to change poses anyway and it doesn't really change much full stop. I'm just surprised they bothered to include two and then crow about it in the description. Did they not cram enough detail onto him to talk about anyway?
>>
>>55293552
I doubt we will see it for a while. Eventually GW will likely put a start collecting box out, but seeing as they tend to give discounts, there's no point in putting it out when demand will be high for just the regular boxes at regular prices.

Not to mention it's probably easier/cheeper for manufacturing to focus on putting out the regular separate boxes, instead of splitting effort for combi start collecting boxes.

so, first you rant about monopose, then you rant because they give you otpional psoes?
You retards are never happy.

also most players build models the way they are and don't bother with convertions, no matter how easy they can be.
Gw is simply giving more easy to build options.
I have no idea how can you be mad about it.

They're telling you how many ways there are to model him. Aside from the monopose memes, I don't see any reason to withhold that information.

Other manufacturers don't have the foothold that GW does. At this point, GW is the WoW of miniature games. There are better games out there, but people will always be playing 40k.

Also, my other army is dark eldar. I'm totally cool just stacking start collecting boxes with a few other kits on the side.
