I like Tolkien Übermensch, but they shouldn't be playable races at all. These should be strong, wise, sometimes cruel, sometimes helpful, stoic, except when they get really pissed. If they are arrogant, they should have a good reason for it, nothing annoys me more than elves that are arrogant because the tropes demand it, not because it has actually something to do with their story and achievements.

A lot of this goes for playable races as well. Here I like it when they are a bit smaller than humans. - CON, + DEX elves that tower over them just doesn't look right to me. Hippies is retarded in my opinion, all folks that live in the woods should know hardship and care about strength and survivability while having a disdain for pussified city people that can't even hunt for food. I know they barely exist, but vegan wood elves don't make any sense.

Any depiction of elves is better than humans with pointy ears, even though some can go overboard. Also the manlier the better.

My elves are haughty immortal forest samurai. They're generally peaceful, and they live forever if not murdered, so they pick up a task as children and spend the next centuries perfecting their art beyond most races. As such, they have stronger militaries, their leadership is a council of high level elders with most of the classes represented, and they have some of the highest level characters alive in the world. However they also tend to stick to themselves in their forest kingdoms and the only time you hear about the unstoppable might of the elves is when someone decides to take over a forest after their community has collectively forgotten the last ass kicking they got. They also have a stronger fear of death than most other races for them because it isn't quite inevitable, so they always try diplomacy first.

Not really any of these, not really original either.

As a race mixing high elf and wild elf in one, capable of urban farming, glass-sap greenhouses, giant tress which supply many needs, giant webs of mothsilk which supply both water from dew and transmit mechanical force from windcatchers, basic militia being bow-spear types, living architecture shaped into things like fields of venomous thorns in front of fortifications.

Funnily enough, the image you posted would fit in, because the city with a greater population of dark elves is a port city based on a giant mangrove's roots, and about 10% of its population are courtesans, male and female. Not all elves, but most of them. Just like 19th century Paris.

I prefer it when elves are more like minor celestials that are part of the world. In muh setting they're one of the only races actually intentionally created by the gods (alongside dragons and elementals), whereas every other race is the result of random mutation brought about by sinister outside forces. Elvish magic is less magic and more just a byproduct of their connection to the world; even the least magically adept elf is assisted very slightly by the world around them, most notably in the way air currents will shift slightly to assist them in feats of swiftness of balance.

I feel like making them completely alien in terms of personality and outlook is retarded, though. That ultimately results in vague, samey, uninteresting characters.

Elves used to be an important advanced civilization, but for a variety of reasons their civilization became unsustainable. The warlike elves pushed the society to start wars of conquest to prop up those empire. The smarter elves realized this wouldn't work, but pushed the warriors into war purposefully. After the elves lost, effectively purpging the warrior elves from their society, the smarter elves sold the remaining elves writ large into slavery. They did so with the idea that they could slowly gain power from within the human civilizations by way of proving themselves useful and desireable.

Fast forward several human generations and elf slaves are a necessary feature of all human societies. The relationship is similar to biological mutualism, however both sides see themselves as the superior: the humans due to their ostensible ownership of the elves, the elves due to how much influence individual elves have over humans.

There are elements on both sides that agitate as they view the other species with distrust and try to out conspiracies / argue for separatism. They're regarded by the majority as fringe lunatics.

I always like to focus much more on the magical talents of elves as opposed to their nimbleness or agility. I do love the stewards of nature aspect though.

Wood Elves/Wild Elves are the most common kind and simply take care of any environments they live in, maintaining the natural order and keeping their homes healthy. How they do this varies and the appearance of their home reflects it. Some elves are peaceful living in serene woodlands, others are horrifically violent and live in toxic, inescapable jungles. Magics largely consist of subtly manipulating their surroundings to hassle their opponents while concealing themselves as well as communicating with flora and fauna. Their only concern is for maintaining the status quo of their territory, including the safety of any human villages present, but they dislike outsiders of any variety, who they view as "invasive".

High Elves are similar to the former except they dwell in areas that are extremely high in magical energies. Things like ancient groves or temples to forgotten Gods are where High Elves make their homes. Magic is much more apparent, making use of blasts of elemental and arcane magic as well as the typical elven repertoire. They are extremely isolationist and typically rather aggressive towards humans who they see as destructive and unnatural.

Dark Elves are Elves who followed their human wards into civilization and hold secret societies to keep what they deem the "natural order" by any means necessary. Political espionage, intermarriage with humans, assassination, societal manipulation, etc etc. Unlike High Elves they still view humans as a part of nature, but acknowledge, and to a degree admire, it's destructive ability. To them humanity is simply a dominant species that needs to be groomed and directed carefully to make sure they don't cause their own destruction on top of the destruction of their surroundings.

The thing is the different races all have their own cultures and language groups with even more subsets within that. For example the Vesterling Elves live within the Empire but due to the fact being forced to live in forest reservations, they came up with a standardized language group no other Elves understands similar to Basque. Osterlings just straight up copied the languages of the Human tribes and intergraded them when they migrated into the Ancient Elven Empire. Unterlings are the Dark Elves who speak the cloest to the language spoken in the Elven Empire and can't understand the Osterling and Vesterling languages.

There are even Snow Elves called Nordlings who are Finn stand-in and are now annexed into an empire for the third time. A bit on the autistic side, they value their privacy and will brutally fend off empires to keep their personal freedoms.

So it looks more like Dark Elves are in a different cultural group then Wood or Snow Elves. With various customs and languages within a cultural group instead of being "Elves are übermensch, Dwarves are smiths, and Human are warriors".

I can only speak about W3 but I enjoyed how savage and unique the Night Elf society was.
Even Grommash Hellscream commented on the martial prowess of the female Night Elves.
They stood out amongst other Wood Elf variants due to having ONLY female warrior/hunters instead of any gender doing anything that other fantasy settings do.

No idea with about Warcraft 1. Warcraft 2 elves were nothing special. You had elves being wizards on par with human mages. You basically only saw them as units as your standard ranged unit, the archer. They had a particular feud with trolls. In the art they looked like typical Metzen style from back then, pretty buff bowmen, don't remember any girls. Warcraft gave the alliance, meaning humans, dwarves and elves, some more magic units and stretched their importance as a magician race that gets its magic and lifespan from a magical well. Night elves were a different culture of shamans and amazons, with a hatred for magic since it was connected to the demons and the downfall of their great civilization from back then. Male night elves were all buff and beefy druids that could shapeshift into wild animals, the females were crazy hunters going max get off my lawn reeeee. They were also connected to the night, having better vision than other races and their girls could hide themselves in the shadows.

There is general elvish population. They are more or less standard elves with pointy ears, 300+ years lifespan and so on.

And then there are old elves or true elves. Who mostly live in the shadows of bigger elven society directing it. They are more like a mix between Pratchett elves, murder machines and hyper intelligent spiders. Their thoughts have pretty alien patterns and while they do care about other elves they can show it in pretty strange ways. All other races and species they consider as playthings at best.

I sort of mash up all the elven stereotypes.

High elves came from the stars (maybe even literally) and colonized earth millions of years ago. They had an empire for a few thousand years until they destroyed themselves through too many sex murder parties.

All the non eleven races on earth are descended from their slaves or were otherwise created by them.

Dark elves are the kind of elves who want to hang onto their old position of ruling over the lesser races and having awesome blood orgies all the time. There is no real fundamental difference between them an the rest of elfkind, just what gods they still sacrifice too, and what kind of parties they still get invited too.

Light elves are elves who still consider themselves to be superior, but aren't interested in having slaves or torturing people. They may however still be interested in orgies, and have weird fantasies about being ravished by lesser races. Not that they'd ever admit this in public. Most of the time they just focus on preserving knowledge and perfecting their arts and crafts.

Brown/wood elves are ones who decided it was better to be one with nature and are tottaly fine with no longer being in charge of a huge empire, because everything changes just like the seasons man. They are more outwardly lewd than light elves, and MIGHT be cannibals. Probably just a rumor though.

There might also be other groups of elves who still live in space, or at least on the Moon. Nothing sure can be said about them by anybody who lives on earth. They are as eldritch to elves as elves are to humans.


As for skin color. Elf skin pigmentation does not work like humans. Rather than getting darker in response to sunlight, it gets darker in response to the environment. Elves are a vain race, and their skin is like a mirror. Elves who live above ground will have light skin, elves who live in dark places will have dark skin. Elves who live in the woods will have skin the color of wood.

I go for pretty old (500ish year lifespan, nothing stupid, because it makes storytelling obnoxious).They age up to around 8-9 at normal time, then slow the fuck down, hitting puberty at around 20, maturity at around 45, and prime at around 70. They get old and crusty at around 350, but exist in that state for a good while longer.
Half-Elves hit about 300, but age up to maturity at human pace, enjoy a long "prime" from about 30 to 100, then basically skip middle age right to becoming an old fogey in a decade or so. As such, there is a jump in mortality rates for a few years after 140-50 or so, as a bunch of geezers struggle to adjust. At about 240, the rates of old person syndroms also shoots up.
Other elf half-breeds exist, but are not covered as strictly.
I typically split between High and Wood elves, Dark and Sea Elves exist but are not usually significant, and are mostly just re-detailed wood elves. Apart from some details (darkvision, amphibious-ness, ect) a half-elf is mostly identical from any elf parent. Half Elves are sort of mules, they can't breed with each-other, but they can breed with either elves or other parent race, producing offspring ordinary for their partner, save the odd, entirely cosmetic detail, like maybe ear shape.
I've tried other things, but I have found that these make Elves not a total pain in the ass when you remember the answer to your "ancient", thousand-year old mystery is probably known off-hand by some elf in a senior complex. I've found that it also makes Half-Elfdom more interesting.

Typically, High Elves do the whole arrogant dickwad thing, Wood Elves do the fellating trees thing. High Elves will happily burn a forest in the name of progress, Wood Elves will happily bro it up with you, so long as your snacks are responsibly sourced. Dark and Sea elves tend to be autistic, antisocial weirdos nobody likes, except when forced to become competent members of a larger society.

High Elves do cities, have a foot in the development of arcane arts and political intrigue, and often shift around to fill out their repertoires of shit they are good at.
They do the whole "My art has been honed for over 10000 hours, so fuck you, you suck" schtick.

Wood Elves are way more carefree and easygoing, more like medium-sized, non-drug addicted halflings mixed with Dwarf Fortress Elves, with a side order of making the local wildlife their bitch, and doing the whole "growing" carpentry thing. Less likely to fuck someone's shit up over light logging. Generally live in smaller, loosely affiliated "tribes" than conglomerate.
They don't really do political intrigue, and are pretty straightforward people. They do way more clericy and druidy shit than wizardy.

The two get along okay.
Generally, High Elves have more of a presence in other places, while Wood Elves generally only do if they need something or get bored. Some people don't like that they eat people.

There was barely anything differentiating elves from humans at all, just that elves looked more "elfish", more radiant, had some kind of aura around them. Yes, there were even some rare humans that could be mistaken for an elf and although it might sound a bit stupid, considering that the pointy ears are really small and all the headgear and long hair they are wearing, I wouldn't be suprised if people hardly noticed them. It's just a minor detail, not really what makes a Tolkien elf look like a Tolkien elf.

I like them Tolkien-esque. When low-thought-level fantasy settings like WoW or DnD make them 'they're humans but different!,' they entirely miss the point of elves and what makes them special. In their Tolkien source material, they have a special space in the cosmos. Their beauty, grace, and long lives aren't a token that distinguishes them for the sake of having elves in your setting.

Really if you want to write elves into something, I don't recommend doing so without reading the Silmarillion.

I'd like to see more representation of Pratchett-style elves. Too often we get cheap knockoff Tolkien model elves, but I prefer the malicious nature spirit style.

The same goes for all fairies and spirits in general. The sanitized, sparkly helpful flower fairies we get today are an abomination, and a horrible money-grabbing distortion of interesting folklore. Pic definitely related.

I agree with that, and there are some moments in various Dark Elf lore were the Druchii aren't 100% retarded when it comes to backstabbing and all.

I'd prefer them to stand as a united nation more often. In the Malus Darkblade books that happens in the last one and it's a nice change of pace from Malus killing his own kin 75% of the time. I can't wait for TW:W2 so I can play as Malekith and unite Naggaroth under my rule.

I feel for you friend. While I was a Dark Elf and Skaven player myself I always did enjoy the concept of a ravenous, wild Beastmen warhead. I remember when they got their last army book and the new models that came with it. I was happy because you guys sure deserved it after being beaten up and used for so long.

Forest aliens. Elves a we know them are essentially the flowers of a plant, the main body of elven society is a sort of curling leafless tree thing that produces fully formed elves from its trunk. The elves go out, bring back kills and other nutrient rich forest detritus to let rot and soak into the earth around the main body. The elves themselves (lel) don't live terribly long, maybe about a year and half until a new batch are born, and go back to their main body to decompose. They're hunter gatherers but build colossal stone stuctures around their main bodies as defense. Since elves live short lives, knowledge is a constant and they build to last.
