Looking at it that way, it might be an implementation of 3D Go, but with the restriction that place a "stone" in the upwards direction requires building it out of Pentaminoes. Neat.

Looks like the pieces have serrated sides to it seems you can only play a piece in 2 ways.

standard go rules, a peice or peices has to be completely surrounded on all four cardinal points by an opponent's peices to be taken.
The big difference is that you can arrange the peices however you want, so you can have peices going over peices and keeping things "alive" can work that way too.
