4th edition is probably the easiest version of Shadowrun to get to grips with. It has some balance issues but most of them are easily housed ruled or addressed in a supplement.

Don't even bother.

the core book is really everything you need, yes, additional books will offer greater options, but you can get by for a while with just that.
as for other books, oh hell yeah, there are tons.
one for critters, one for guns, one for magic, one for cybernetics, one for vehicles, one for character options, one for drones, several adventures...

if you are going to run it, my advice is get the group together and have them come up with a team concept before they come up with character concepts. This will make things slightly easier on you.

It's more complicated than Pathfinder but not by much.

Character creation is going to be the trickiest thing so don't be too proud to have everyone start w/ pregens.

Alternatively, have a big character building day where everyone gets together and makes their characters.

just do not think the background story/setting reflects the rule set. 5th ed is better balanced but like D&D magic users rule - just plain better in 4th and 5th shadowrun
