>>55248669
how the fuck does that make any sense? Explain yourself.
>>
>>55248495
You got that analogy wrong. Synthwave is just taking cyberpunk's art style and making it more palatable for normalfags, it has no definition beyond that. Vaporwave is a genre of music, in the same sense cyberpunk is a genre of writing.
>>
>>55248495
Mallpunk
>>
>>55248495
Synthwave is to 80s action/horror soundtracks and Sega CD game soundtrack and late 80s synthpop what vaporwave is to 80s/90s TV commercials, self-help VHS intro jingles, elevator muzak, new age ambient music, synthfunk, city pop, and new wave synthpop.

That's it.

Trying to pigeonhole synthwave as exclusively cyberpunk is the kind of dumb reduction that leads onlookers (as well as synthwave artists like Perturbator) to end up rejecting the genre as a whole because they don't want to be assimilated to dumb /v/irgins who can only approach music through the scope of vidya gaem refrences
>>
>>55248772
You are quite literally wrong. Synthwave isn't a graphic design movement it's a music genre.

you're blowing a very vague and minor aspect of the genre way out of proportion just because you like le cheeky breeky vidya gaem

That's the truth of the matter

your video doesn't match vaporwave aesthetics and you should be embarrassed of drawing such asspulled comparisons just to promote STALKER

One of the big things with Vaporwave is that it tries to evoke nostalgia, even when the listener would have none, even where it does not exist, and even if it wasn't as good as the musician remembers. Junky technology, badly recorded videos, and often themes of people relying on drugs to feel anything. STALKER takes place in Post-soviet Ukraine that's doing so bad they almost miss the communism, even if it communism fucking up is what put them in their current bullshit in the first place. They use are junky dated Soviet-era firearms and technology, and of course they rely on vodka to feel anything resembling joy in the entire country, let alone the Zone.

Maybe Stalkerpunk wasn't the right term for it. Postsovietpunk? Whatever, my point is, Vaporwave's main theme is to fabricate nostalgia for good times that never really existed, which befits the post-soviet Ukraine and the struggle of the Stalkers quite nicely, I feel.

vaporwave isn't meant to evoke nostalgia in general it's meant to evoke nostalgia for late 80s/early 90s cheap pop culture

there is exactly ONE vaporwave album that matches your criteria (DROME- red dreams) and it's really a borderline case.

Stop being dishonest and admit that you're just trying to shoehorn your unrelated vidya taste in this thread

I don't actually like Stalker, I could never stay interested in it as a game, I just feel its aesthetic is the most befitting of it mostly because of that video I showed you
Why are you so hostile against me and Stalker as a whole, even
>>
>>55249318
I'm not hostile to Stalker I'm hostile to you for drawing that asspulled comparison.

>I just feel its aesthetic is the most befitting of it mostly because of that video I showed you
Mostly because of ONE fucking video huh?
Is that video your only form of exposure to vaporwave or something? Cause that would be your only excuse for feeling that way.

I mean fuck it's like if I said "the aesthetic of thrash metal is most befitting for romantic comedy chick flicks" after seeing a video that splices footage from Bridesmaids with some Anthrax.

It's dumb.
>>
>>55248495
Synthwave isn't cyberpunk at all. It's the kind of music to listen to when driving down the coast in your white Ferrari Testarossa with a cute blonde girl next to you. Or it's the kind of music you listen to when you're raiding a gang's hideout, MAC-10 in hand, to get your kidnapped girlfriend back. And it's the kind of music you listen when you're coming back from the dead and start stalking and killing your murderers in a brutal fashion one by one. Apart of the pictures on some CD covers, synthwave has nothing in common with cyberpunk.
>>
>>55248844
>(as well as synthwave artists like Perturbator) to end up rejecting the genre
Are you referring to Perturbator's new EP, which doesn't sound quite like his other music?
>>
>>55249507
Are you nuts? Perturbator absolutely feels like cyborg motorcycle gang violence in the dirty rundown streets of New New York, Neon street signs wizzing by faster than the lines of cocaine disappearing up your nose.
>>
>>55249616
Don't forget the cyberdemon cult rituals
>>
>>55248495
All I can think of is some kind of -punk that involves people just sitting around getting really drunk or stoned and not doing anything, but I don't think that -punk exists because nothing interesting would ever happen in it.
>>
If vaporwave looks at the consumerism of the 1980s and says "Man, the future fucking sucks," then in a lot of ways STALKER is its Soviet counterpart. Memery included.
>>
>>55249507
Those all sound like cyberpunk plotlines.

I think the argument could be made for a Vaporwave version of cyberpunk (Vaporpunk?) that replaces the corporate hellscape with a more socialistic dystopia.
Vaporwave is all about recycling old yet familiar sounds and images in new ways, but not TOO new. Cyberpunk relies on the now anachronistic version of the future where a Vaporpunk is intentionally anachronistic, due to cultural stagnation caused by civilization becoming immortal and achieving a light form of post-scarcity?
Similar to how Greeks have been idealized by Romans and others, the deification of specific cultural traits that define the typical Cyberpunk setting can be easily switched out by trying to capture the zeitgeist of another genre of music.
>>
>>55249616
Perturbator does yes, as does Megadrive, but guys like Dance with the Dead, FM-84 and Kavinsky often have a different, lighter feel
>>
>>55249616
Scandroid, yes. Perturbator and Noir Deco on some songs, yes, but on others not at all (Sexualizer album). Then you have artists like Trevor Something, Com Truise, Mitch Murder, Le Casette, FM-84, Kavinsky, Miami NIghts 84, FM Attack, Carpenter Brut, Alex, Lifelike, Bourgeoisie, Flash Arnold, Arcade High... that sound like possible 80s thrillers, horror or sci-fi movies but not at all like cyberpunk.
>>
I thought Vaporwave was a joke
>>
>>55250559
>Carpenter Brut
Well, there is Anarchy Road.
>>
>>55251511
Like all memes, the joke was taken too far
>>
>>55252297
Saying Carpenter Brut sounds cyberpunk because of Anarchy Road, is like saying Perturbator doesn't sound cyberpunkish because of Meet Jimmy. But that's just my opinion and anyone may disagree.

Everyone has different music tastes. If you want to put Lazerhawk, Power Glove, Perturbator and Carpenter Brut during your cyberpunk sessions, because you find it suits your style of cyberpunk best, more power to you. Personally, I find industrial music and its derivative more suited.

It's the music for the masses of legitimately employed citizens of the cyberpunk setting. The office drones, the secretaries, the engineers, and middle management.
It's actually fitting of the vaporwave themes of empty consumerism and a nostalgia for the good times that never were.

Not all synthwave is cyberpunk, but a large portion of synthwave artists were inspired by Neuromancer, Blade Runner, AKIRA and the like.

Any synthwave song/album that allows me to envision cyberpunk imagery instead of pure '80s imagery is cyberpunk in my book.

>>
>>55264050
It's not because I wouldn't use it, that you shouldn't. If you like it and find it fits your campaign, use it. Personally, I find that industrial/noise/dark ambient/metal music fits the genre better, but that's my personal opinion.

Stuff I used: Scorn, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, KMFDM, Velvet Acid Christ, Atari Teenage Riot, Killing Joke, Imminent Starvation, Lustmord, Sonar, Suicide Commando, Haujobb, Pitshifter, Gridlock, Slayer, Synapscape, Hypnoskull, Fear Factory, Monte Cazazza, Robert Rich, and some more.
>>
Now, I'd use much simpler soundtrack. I'd keep two long ambient tracks that play as background music most of the time. One track would be something neutral like space ambient. The other track would be dark ambient for the more desperate/depressing moments. The tracks are set on track repeat so I don't have to fiddle with my media player. Then, I'd keep one or two more rhythmic tracks for combat. Again, the tracks must be repeatable so I don't have to fiddle with the media player during combat and I don't want to have a hard cut when the track repeats (vidya music is well suited for that). Finally, I'd maybe keep one or two more tracks for night club/bars. I'd use some kind of industrial mix for that.

I could argue that all of those things informed Cyberpunk at some point so it ends up being a wash. All of those are on my Netrunner playlist.

>TFW you will never record a Neuromancer radiology with a Perturbator soundtrack

Mixed with Synthwave and J-Rock styled punk with some touches of Jazz for a noir feel. Cyberpunk playlists get pretty diverse.

Those tropes are very generic. Change the Ferrari for a horse, the top model gf for a princess, the MAC-10 for a long sword, gangsters for orcs, and the buildings for castle and huts and you'd have classic heroic fantasy.

The original 80s Synthwave is very similar to Industrial except using a synth and other electronic stuff as the main drive instead of guitars.

Synthwave is library music 80s
Vaporwave is the mainstream music 80s

There is the microgenre called memoradelia (also called hauntology) that became famous at 2009 that was the 70s library music one

Ghost box the list could go on....

I love using music in my cyberpunk 2020 games, and alot of different genres too. Hell they once raided a night club to kidnap a rival gangmember while multiple synthwave artists dj'd
