W-wait, anon! Cursed Earth is too pure for this depraved imageboard!
>>
>>55233638
But EXTREMELY scrupulous interrogations are not. The kind where you are forced to undress in a cold dark room in front of scary as fuck judges and stuck into a machine that records and analyzes your every tiny fart or pulse fluctuation during said interrogation. This is not considered torture, but you can end up ever so slightly traumatized.

New movie is not bad too, I am also kinda hyped for the TV-show, since it is being tightly controlled by people who actually write the comics. Also, Karl Urban is rumored to return as Dredd which is nice. Man got the chin and the scowl.

>>
>>55233419
That's precisely the reason: the Atomic War broke the earth, and the rocks started to fly. Eventually someone at 2000AD either forgot about the Death Belt or thought it was bloody silly and it simply went away after Cursed Earth... until an issue of the Megazine, where they show what happened to it: it was transported into the dimension where Judge Death comes from.

The entire Cursed Earth bit was lifted wholesale from Roger Zelazny's book Damnation Alley - in the book, it's gigantic windstorms that make the last of the Hell's Angels to cross post-apocalyptic America to deliver a plague cure to boston. Whereas in Cursed Earth, it's flying rocks that make the hardest Judge ever to cross post-apocalyptic America to deliver a plague cure to... yeah.

It's insane how there has never been a really good Dredd videogame. I remember as a kid when I got the Melbourne House Judge Dredd game, thinking it would be awesome, then finding out that it was just a rather naff platformer/shooter.

Then there was that ad in Zzap! about the Anderson vs Death game which turned out to be vapourware, another game in the early 1990s on the Amiga that was (again) a disappointing shitty platformer/shooter, and then Dredd vs Death. I may have missed some.

Not one awesome Judge game, and that's a bloody shame.

>>
So was it standard procedure for all of the villains of the comics of this time to jerk off about how nasty and evil they are, or is this just the case for all comics and I don't have much experience with the genre, or what's the deal here?

It reads to me like the author was getting off to how hardcore his little monster is
>>
>>55250378
Sure, it was the 80`s.
>>
As great as Dredd is, I've always been a bigger fan of Strontium Dog and Sinister Dexter. I feel like they don't get the love they deserve.
>>
>>55250634
My nigga, those are my favourites as well. Dredd is a close 3rd. Slaine also has some good stuff, same with Rogue Trooper. Fuck, 2000ad really is underrated as hell.
>>
>>55250712
ABC Warriors doesn't really get any recognition either, although the cameo in Stallone Dredd was nice.
>>
>>55250634
Dredd and Strontium Dog have always been my favourite 2000AD bits, and now that the new Worlds of 2000AD RPG is coming out, I want that SD stuff so hard my hands clench. I said it above, but S/D agents are made for campaigns.
>>
Idk if I'm going to be able to finish posting the rest of the cursed earth before this thread slides off

>>
>>55233638

Wait, so the scene in Dredd 2012 when he beats the shit out of the guy they're dragging around the tower to try and get him to confess is against canon? Damnit, I really love that movie and I thought it was more authentic to the character.
>>
>>55252208

>>
>>55252208
No, that was enhanced interrogation.
>>
>>55252246

Nah, it's right after the scene where Cersei blasts the whole side of the building apart with gattling guns. Dredd hauls the guy into a schoolroom and starts beating him up, but Anderson stops him and says that she can get the information out of the guy without touching him. She goes into his mind and he pisses himself.

But he's cuffed and not trying to escape when Dredd is punching and choaking him.

>>55252277

Granted, but it's also exactly what Turpin does here >>55233281

Personally I'm not too worried even if it does break with canon slightly; it fits the character in the movie and in the context of the movie, they mention interrogation, and Mama says that if Kay gets interrogated, he'll talk, implying that whatever the process is, it's not going to be pleasent.
>>
>>55252749
I wonder if "he insulted a judge" would be a good enough reason to punch someone?
>>
>>55252749
Yeah I noticed that when I re-watched it last night. It didn't seem true to Dredd at all. Torture is ILLEGAL remember?
>>
>>55252749
I think the difference is that Turpin beat a confession out of him, Dredd just wanted to know what the hell was going on, not try and coerce the man to sign a legal confession.

The Landmaster from the movie version of Damnation Alley, to be specific. The book version was something like a BTR-60, with four axles, multiple machine guns, flamethrowers and grenade launchers plus space for a motorcycle. Truly a vehicle with multi-level kill power, and enough to inspire a Hawkwind song.
>>
>>55252749
I figure it's a case of extenuating circumstances. With the safety of two judges and the citizens of Peach Trees on the line Dredd decides harsher measures are called for. As a senior Judge he can make that call. It happens some time in the comics. Under the security of the city act

It's a US Dredd. Beatings and death sentences for everyone.

Is there any interest in a general 2000ad story time. I'm going to have some time tomorrow and I was thinking about posting some of Dredds stable mates

Based Dredd
>>
>>55257565

I was reading up about the planned Dredd TV series and some people were saying it looks to be based on a story called America. Did some reading up on it and it seems to be highly regarded. Is it actually good?
>>
>>55260097
I think so. The rest is an exercise for the reader, really, I'm just surprised they're going for such a late story arc. Of course a lot of early ones wouldn't work.
>>
>>55260097
America is genuinely good. I doubt they'll do a direct adaptation though. The plot plays out over the course of decades and it's written in a way that expects the reader to know a bit about Dredd's world. Both of which would make it hard to adapt for tv
>>
>>55261104
The strip itself is framed as a series of flashbacks so that is not really a problem. We have no idea about the format of the show but having it as a later episode/arc will give the viewer time to grok how the world operates.

Is there any particular reason why America is speculated to be on the menu beyond being a well liked story with the whole law vs. democracy theme?

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2017/08/11/concept-art-judge-dredd-mega-city/

Two pieces of concept art have been released, with the first titled "Democracy March" which, as the article says, might be a reference to America.

>>55235212
That's fucking epic. Do you still have it?

Yes, America is very good and Dredd is not even a main character in it. Great look at MC-1 from the point of view of civilians.

Ten years
>>
>>55233378
Early Dredd was supposed to represent a future where everyone was mixed-race, Ezquerra did the character designs, but walked away before Dredd's first appearence in Prog 2. Gibson copied Ezquerra's designs for a while, as did McMahon. this was dropped within 2000AD's first two years. Not because of any editorial influence, and not because of any racism on the part of writers or artists, but because each artist either had his own style (Bolland) or was developing his own style (McMahon), and becase the strips were mostly B+W, it was more convenient to let them draw him the way they wanted. And so other than the developing chin, there was no 'set' way of presenting Dredd.
>>

And it was part of a series of Matchbox vehicles. It was purely put into the Dredd strip as an advert to sell the toys. This was WAY before the He-Man cartoons btw...

What the fuck is a kook cube?

Also, why aren't there any death sentences on here? Doesn't Dredd execute people all the time?
>>
>>55263016
>What the fuck is a kook cube?
Iso-cube for crazy ones.

>Also, why aren't there any death sentences on here? Doesn't Dredd execute people all the time?
Only in self-defense or to protect the MC-1 and it`s citizens. Death is always the measure of last resort.
>>
>>55263042

So once again we come back to the Dredd 2012 movie not being true to canon? Dredd tells Anderson to execute a guy they've captured because his crime is the attempted murder of a Judge, for which the sentence is death. And Dredd executes Mama too.

What was the Dredd community's reaction to the film? I mean, I love it, but the only connection I have to Dredd are these threads on /tg/.
>>
>>55263073
Community loved it. It was the best portrayal of Dredd outside the comic-books. Fans tend not to dwell too much on some inconsistencies, especially those who remember Stallone movie.
It is an action flick after all, making your main character shoot everyone and say "THE SENTENCE IS DEATH" works better then just arresting everyone.

Dredd 2012 isn't canon

However individual Judges have the ultimate authority on sentencing. The listed values are just statutory guidelines, the actual sentence is up to the discretion of the arresting officer. Dredd could summarily execute you for jaywalking or let you walk for triple homicide, and in either case he'd be completely in the right. But if it became a pattern, SJS would have his ass on a slow boat to Titan pretty quickly.
>>
>>55263138
>SJS would have his ass on a slow boat to Titan pretty quickly.

Dredd ever been to Titan? I figured there'd be at least one "Dredd framed for crime" story in there somewhere.
>>
>>55263284
Dredd was framed and almost sent to Titan during "The Day the Law Died"

and went to Titan during "Titan"

see >>55262592
>>
>>55263284
If I remember correctly, there was a comic where Dredd took the Long Walk, where judges are cast out into the Cursed Earth to bring law to the lawless.
>>
>>55263073
Dredd was a lower key version of the setting.

It excised a bunch of the sillier stuff, and went for more hardcore punishments.

This doesn't make it bad (hell, I loved it) but just that... that universe probably lacks a Walter, Tweak, or Satanus.

Also the crime figures were ridiculously low. Modern day American cities are worse than the figures used there.
>>
>>55263458
I liked the movie. Thought it was cool. I hope the team that did that flick gets more franchises to adapt. Their version of 40k would be interesting, as would an adaptation of 100 Bullets or Sinister Dexter or something in that vein.

The time won't be the only thing that's hard.
>>
>>55263458

12 serious crimes per minute, 17,000 per day? Surely American cities can't be THAT bad.
>>
>>55263645
When you consider the size of Mega CIty 1, that's downright tame.
>>
>>55263645

Not him, but considering that Mega City One covers pretty much the entirety of the East Coast and has a population of hundreds of millions.
>>
>>55263676
>>55263673

Well sure, but a whole lot of crimes would be unreported, and the majority of citizens would be in their homes vegged out right?
>>
>>55263645
Twelve serious crimes reported every minute. For a population of eight hundred million.

The US has a population of 323 million. Depending on what's meant by a serious crime, if it just means a felony, then there's 10 of those per minute. Even if it means violent crime, there's one every 26 seconds.

Per capita, MC1's probably safer.

I thought Dredd would be more Lawful Good. From what I've seen, even though he's absolutely devoted to the Law, he seems to tend towards mercy where it's appropriate.

it still had resyk, mutants, fatties with bellywheels, mainly as cameos.
It was true to the spirit of the comic, despite not looking like sci-fi. I really enjoyed it, as a different spin on the franchise.
Also it had proper frowning technique.
>>
>>55268104
>mutants, fatties with bellywheels, mainly as cameos.

sorry guys, image limit reached. It's in the mall at the beginning of the movie, next to a corpse (that isn't this fat).
>>
>>55268104
Dredd always seemed to me as what would happen if the Judge Dredd universe was made closer to now than back in 1970.

Less of the unrealistic, less of the laser guns, less of the oversized pauldrons and giant chain-badges, less of the sending people to space-colonies.

More of the pessimistic realistic, more of the autonomous drones flying through the skies, more of the world looking like a shittier detroit than an image drawn in a comic, more of the shit we deal with NOW except just more of it.

P.S.
Also, the extra 2000AD Dredd comic that came in the back of the 2nd Issue of Dust pretty much explains what happens if anyone falls in love with a Judge.
>>
>>55255384
can't finish the Cursed Earth because of the image limit

oh well
Dredd makes it and everyone is fine except Spike who dies
>>
>>55268104
Oh, I agree. It's a great Judge Dredd movie as well as a great movie.

And of course the frowning is perfect.

A bit of heresy I know, but I actually prefer the movie's more realistic and near future depiction. I'll report myself to the nearest Judge.

One of my favourite things about that story was how the robot judges were getting better results than the actual judges with their friendly approach.

Until that one went full retard and tried to arrest Dredd, of course.
