AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.

You know, I was just thinking about posting a Discworld thread. About Death and wizards.
In the early books, we find out that wizards gleefully kill each other in order to get promotions. The tradition dies down when Ridicully shows up and proves to be unkillable, but before it, wizards kill each other in droves.
The problem is, wizards also know exact time of their deaths. Isn't it a little inconsistent? Like, if you know that your rival is not going to kill you, why even bother to prepare to fight back (like we see in Light Fantastic, or how Ridicully handles things)? You know it's not your time, he's not gonna do shit.
You don't just die in Discworld, your lifespan must end first.

"Wait, what? Who are you? I'm so confused, where is this place?"
>>55223123
He has shaped my philosophies more than any other single person.

Their natural deaths, I think it was.
Which means enough wizards will take out large loans and drain their really good booze that there's a tradition of it, but not every wizard will
>>55224280
>No, not cancer. Alzheimers
gets me everytime. Pratchett would've been proud
>>55224196
>that was a great book
>you wrote it
>oh yeah, I forgot
Also: threadly reminder that discworld is complete shit
Favourite Discworld character?
>>55225075
Moist von Lipwig. Motherfucker conjured money from absolutely nowhere.
>>55225075
>"He wanted to go home. He wanted it so much that he trembled at the thought. But if the price of that was selling good men to the night, if the price was filling those graves, if the price was not fighting with every trick he knew....Then it was too high. "
I know that every character had 'that' moment, but Vimes' was by far the best.
>>55225075
Stalemate between Brutha and Om. Small Gods is easily my favourite book. They're all good, but this one speaks to me on a very deep level.
>>55224061
>The problem is, wizards also know exact time of their deaths. Isn't it a little inconsistent? >You don't just die in Discworld, your lifespan must end first.
You just end up as a ghost, duh.
>>55225075
Polly Perks.
(Fucking fite me.)
>>55225486
I liked that book, but I think Sergeant Jackrum is its finest character. Authoritative, kindly and terrifying.
>>55225075
The Librarian, he is probably the most competent member of Unseen's faculty, and I just love his characterization.
>>55223843
>>55224170
>>55224680
It's kind of amazing how one cover artr artist can become attached to certain series. I don't even know if he has drawn covers for anything else.
>>55223123
Nah. Doesn't scan. Pratchett's Death is generally sympathetic, but he wouldn't take this sort of reverential tone, or acknowledge a human title. His attitude is made painstakingly clear if you read just about any discworld novel.
>everyone is retarded
>puns
>this is the extent of Pratchett's """"""""""humour""""""""""
>>55225125
>Am I actually a bastard, or just really good at pretending to be one?
>>55225075
Nanny Ogg. She might be a comic character but Pratchett respects mums too much to ever make her the butt of the joke.
Vimes and Granny W would be up there but they each lead too many books and don't change enough after their initial appearance to work as protagonists.
>>55225590
He would use his sword at least.
>>55225583
Josh Kirby had a successful career well before Pratchett.
He didn't do much RPG work to my knowledge but this cover to a WFRP 1st ed supplement always sticks in my mind. Wish I could find a high res image of just the illustration.
>>55225745
Ah shit you're right, Death gives kings special treatment. I suppose it's in the rules.
>>55223123
... who are you again?
>>55225643
>>55226010
Minor nitpick here, but it's kinda irritating when people correct others who don't say sir when talking about a celebrity. Ian McKellen is another example I've seen. All respect to them, but using the title isn't a requirement, especially online, and it's just an archaic honorary thing anyway.
What do you guys think? This isn't directed to the knights themselves (or you), but the people online who seem to do this.
>>55223123
All you need to know about how garbage the Hugo's are is that Terry never got one.
>>55226061
all respect to them, but they need to be guillotined for accepting titles of nobility
>>55226081
>but they need to be guillotined for accepting titles of nobility
What are you gonna do, turn down a sign of respect from another noble-minded ninny? I'd rather take the compliment and not abuse it than to piss someone off who thinks their ass is gold by divine right.
>>55224061
Just started reaper man audio book with my wife. They get a premonition several weeks before their natural deaths, not when they are killed but when they simply run out of life.
>>55226061
That's Sir Ian McKellen, CH, CBE to you, sir!
>>55226102
decline an honour from Liz Windsor and you're in very prestigious company. Much as I'm fond of the Discworld, Terry Pratchett is not a greater artist than David Bowie or Alan Bennett.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_declined_a_British_honour
>>55226081
Go to bed Robespierre.
>>55226081
This. David Bowie had the right idea.
>>55226119
Don't forget he did panto, too.
He'd glass you if he found out you omitted
>>55225009
Ah, so this is what objectively bad taste looks like.
>>55225075
Moist remains best guy, although I like almost all of them. Favourite book has to be Raising Steam, although I actually like a lot of his later "Industrial" ones. The Truth, Going Postal, Making Money, Raising Steam, all that lot.
>>55224067
Weirdly, I always imagined Rincewind looking just like PTerry.
>>55225164
Second.
>>55227749
Nah, Rincewind's always been Shaggy in a shitty red robe.
>>55223123
Don't do this to me, you bastard.
>>55223123
mfw you hope its terry brooks
>>55225075
Vetinary. Ruthless, machiavellian, capable, everything a politician wishes to be. And he genuinely wishes what is better for his city and people.
My second would have to be Carrot. Everything a paladin should want to be.
>>55225075
Esme.
If I had to pick anyone to save the world, it'd be her. And I know she'd bitch the whole way.
>Tfw you realise there's an alternate reality Vimes that has to listen, while his friends are being killed around him, to another version of himself stopping a war with most no casualties
>>55224061
>You know it's not your time, he's not gonna do shit.
No, you just know you're not going to actually DIE. A very important distinction. You could still end up losing an eye or getting some other crippling injury... and that's just for starters.
>>55225590
>acknowledge a human title
Pretty sure he at least calls the king "sire" in Mort.
>>55225125
Nonsense. He didn't conjure money from nothing, he made other people THINK he conjured money from nothing, and let them act accordingly. The first can be done by any second-rate wizard, but the second can only be done by a first-rate banker.
>>55240258
Fuck you anon.
>>55225590
so he would prefer clickity clack get in the sack
>You're not allowed to do that...
>THE HOGFATHER CAN. THE HOGFATHER GIVES PRESENTS. THERE'S NO BETTER PRESENT THAN A FUTURE.
>>55223123
Gods damn it OP! I dont want to feel this feel!
I cri everytim
>>55240420
Me too man, me too.
I find myself in a pecuilar state of mind when it comes to dear, departed Sir Pratchett.
As much as I loved the man's writing and his personal achievements, I was far too busy mourning other things when he departed. My beloved father, the single parent who raised me, passed away the same year.
As much as it hurt, we were all secretly relieved. We had feared that after his multiple strokes, our father would linger on as a shadow of his former self. Bereft of all he held dear and forced to waste away in some home. Instead he was taken from us suddenly. A mercy we all secretly welcomed.
So I cannot help but think that Sir Pratchett's departure was a mercy in its own way. He wrote often of the loss of memory and identity, so I think Pratchett would agree - were he able.
>>55241776
Alzheimer's is a terrible and terribly ironic way to go for an author.
>>55223123
oh shit did terry pratchet die?
>>55242233
>>55242062
Aye, it really is one of the most horrible ways to pass. Were I diagnosed with it, I would end it beforehand on my own terms.
>>55242302
damn, someone should have toldOP
>>55240420
>IT'S NOT FAIR.
>Well that's life, innit Master?
>WELL I AM NOT.
>>55240258
DELETE THIS
>>55225075
Lu-Tze. For is it not written in the Way of Mrs. Cosmopilite "Because"?
>>55225075
I honestly quite like Tiffany Aching as the perfect example of how to write a female protagonist.
>>55240420
Death was kinda angry in the Hogfather, like, righteously angry.
>>55226061
Stop sucking nobles' cock.
>>55240420
>>55245298
Hogfather isn't my favorite Discworld novel-that honor goes to A Hat Full Of Sky-but god bless Death for doing that and fuck miseryporn right in the ear.
>>55225075
Carrot Ironfounderson
>>55242062
>>55242396
It's worse than that.
He had a form of Alzheimer's that destroyed his ability to recognize the written word.
I can't help but think some god threw a tantrum over his quote from Soul Music-
>"Those the gods wish to destroy they first drive mad. A favorite joke of theirs is to deafen a promising composer.
>This is a mistake.
>It doesn't stop them from hearing the music. It stops them from hearing the distractions."
>>55225075
Carrot in the later books, as he has worked out how Ankh-Morpork works and is manipulating everyone. Also, for the little moment between Carrot and Vetinary when Vetinary is informed only the King can make a Duke, and Carrot gives the smallest of nods to him.
>>55225820
Now that is a rad fucking cover
>>55240258
>Rincewind dies in his sleep
This is so fitting. Makes me sad we'll never see such a scene written...
Anyone ever run a TP inspired campaign or played a game in Ankh Morpork?
I was thinking about setting an urban campaign in an AM inspired city.
My players haven't read enough Pratchett to pick the references.
>>55240420
I like his version better anyway
Bump. I wonder if there's a Death of threads.
>>55254127
Would he use "7" as a scythe?
>>55224280
This happened about the time i found out my dad has it. I still don't know how to feel about it- it's hard to plan for a disease that makes the victim so alone... i wish there was an easy way to make it better. Sometimes I wish he'd follow the same path... I guess I'll see where it leads for now- i just hope he isn't afraid in the end.
>>55239188
On the disc that's halfway to actual magic.
>>55225643
You don't understand; whomever's fault that may be.
>>55226164
I'm pretty sure you can't be a English knight and Goblin King at he same time.
>>55224213
I hate looking at the world map. It reminds me of how underdeveloped the world is. I'm pretty sure some of those places are never even mentioned in the books, and every culture that isn't not!European is a shallow, slightly racist even for the timecaricature.
Mostly I just wish we'd had a series set in Genua.
>>55254729
I recently just lost my mil to it, right after losing my uncle to it... It's not much of a silver lining, but in the end I doubt they're scared, neither of them knew/remembered they were sick/dying the last 6 months of life, they couldn't remember much of anything. My condolences anon.
>>55226156
>moronic absolutism
one is a writer of light fiction, the others are a musical legend and playwright, respectively.
it's not fucking fair that pterry had to get sick and die while dan brown still lives
british fa/tg/uys may want to visit an exhibition based on pratchett's life: http://www.salisburymuseum.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/terry-pratchett-hisworld
>>55246440
>Sergeant Colon was lost in admiration. He had seen someone bluff on a bad hand, but he'd never seen anyone bluff with no cards.

Lord Vetinari and Rincewind.
Death and Cohen are close second placers.

Fucking THIS. If i wanted to be miserable with no payoff i'd read the news.

I've played the Discworld MUD quite a bit, but no to the other things.
