Got a bit of a question here, 40kg. I'm interested in the lore of 40k and very much in playing it, but I absolutely suck at painting and it's not something I'm terribly interested in. What would you recommend? Is there a painting method that can make minis look passable enough with minimal effort (idk, like spraypainting it and doing highlights over or something)? I'm willing to spend a reasonable of money and time, but I have the artistic skill of a sugar glider.

Probs want some primaris now, but definitely grab vets and Apothecaries. Can't say why, but I feel like centurions go with their army a lot too

I've got a couple of 1500 point games coming up in a local league I'm participating in - first against Necrons and later against Iron Warriors. I play Dark Angels and have a pretty good collection of dudes. Any advice on list building or tactics to utilize? I've yet to play against either faction in this edition. I'm thinking of including some Black Knights and a AC/CCW+SB Venerable Dreadnought, since those have done real work for me vs MEQ in the past.
>>
>>55214406
Easiest method I know is what ive seen some store managers teach people. Prime, one layer of your favorite color on armor, another of your favorite colors on regalia such as head dresses or pauldrons, then Drybrush with a bright color. Doesnt take that much time, dont need a lot of paints, and you get the satisfaction of having done it yourself.

Saving up for a cheap commission studio to give your entire army a passable paintjob, or doing something like airbrushing or color primer spraying your entire army then dipping.

You probably shouldn't bother with playing the game if you don't care about the models or want to paint. There's other ways to get into the setting without having to play with an army. If you DO like the models, it's probably worth paying someone to paint them or figuring out a way for you to get past the hurdle of not wanting to paint, such as shortcuts or just slowly getting accustomed to painting.

While I still havent actually lost any games with my Necrons. All of those things except 2018 make me hard.

In an apocalypse match on saturday, it took the combined might of a Warhound Titan and a 3CP Orbital Strike to kill all 5 of my shield Lychguard.
>>
>>55214406
Your choice of army will be a factor. Necrons, some Marines and some Daemons are easy to paint with simple techniques will getting nice effects. Something like a Eldar army is a bit more involved.
>>
>>55214431
when the battle cannon hits just right
>>
>>55214406
Sure, though the exact method depends on your faction. Buy a can of Chaos Black spray paint (the first "primer" coat) and another spray can of the main color of your army (blue for Ultramarines, green for Orks, etc.). Prime the minis in black, allow them to dry, then spray them in the main color. Don't drench the minis in paint - hold the can a fair distance from the mini and just get a nice even coat across the whole mini. Paint the eyes (red for most factions) and the weapons (Leadbelcher is good for most of them). You're done! The minis are now ready for the tabletop. If you find you want to add a bit more detail, just pick out details here and there in appropriate colors (gold for decorations, brown for leather and cloth, flesh-color for, you know, flesh, leadbelcher for most mechanical details like space marine mouth-grills etc.), but no one will hold it against you if you decide your army is good enough without such flair.
>>
>>55214442
Thanks, I'll look into it.

When playing against Necrons, dont waste any lascannons on Arks or other transportesque vehicles unless you are feeling lucky. Quantum shielding will fuck you in the ass. And dont worry about the army as a whole as much as choose individual squads to obliterate every turn. If you are playing with objectives make them come to you.

I also assume they will have at least Two blobs of 20 warriors. Destroying one of the blobs completely with as much fire as you feel you can spare will go a long way to helping you win.

Wraiths can move through terrain so beware charges through any cover or buildings, and dont let yourself get too much tied up in any fights with Lychguard or Triarch Praetorians.

Nick away at any Triarch Stalker if you have a chance because it gives anything else that shoots at what it shoots at the ability to reroll 1's. This includes everything from warriors to fliers and tanks.

Pic related is my 1500 point Necrons. It isnt the most optimal build but It is what I love, I could have taken another 10 warriors in exchange for my Lychguard which I suspect most people will.

Finally if the Triarch Stalker has a Heat Ray, it will be used as a flamer if you charge it so be careful.
>>
>>55214410
I'm okay with this
>>
>>55214542
Would asking other players to teach you to play the game and lending you their army work? You could also build some armies with things like plastic army men or prepainted D&D/Heroclix figures.

Best option is probably just assembling the army you want and then giving it a color spray primer coat. People might grumble about "primer only army", but if it's a colored primer, it honestly looks 90% the same as a fully painted model from far away. Color primer is way better looking than black/grey/white primer or unpainted when playing.
>>
>>55214542
If you dont like to paint, dont get Orks. You will have to do an excessive amount of painting and it wont be any fun. Tau will be a lot easier and you will be able to get into action earlier and do more with shooting than you will with Orks.

Basic target priority goes:
Stalker first as it buffs damage and carries one of the few sources of AT. Followed by either the rest of the AT, being either Heavy Destroyers or Doomsday Arks.

Then you want to destroy any Ghost Arks, as they provide extra resilience to infantry. Then you can just mop up as needed, the basic infantry dies to melee and any of the specialists dies fairly easily to plasma.

Seconding this. Betrayal at Calth was one of the best boxes I've bought in recent memory. Sculpts were nice, very little flash/moldlines, massive savings when compared to buying seperately, and there's no "bad" units in the box (aside from maybe the Contemptor, but if the weakest unit in the fucking box is a Contemptor that's still DAMN good).
Prospero isn't quite as good but it's not too far off, still way above average. I mainly like the armor patterns and HQs from Calth more than those in Prospero but Prospero can be just as nice if you plan on having some Talons of the Emperor allies at some point.

Speaking of, something of interest happened the other day, me and my lil bro visited the nearby game shop in a bay town, while my goal was to try and get some info on how to pre-order the new L5R stuff, we saw two guys at one of the tables playing 40K, specifically a Chaos vs Tyranids thing...

This might have been a spark for my lil bro, as he wondered what the game was, I explained a bit of the setting to him. He seems fond of the Necrons, and after showing him a batrep of Necron army pretty much roflstomping an Eldar army, it may have solidified his interest in the game... now how am I to get some nessesary stuff for him? well, outside of a "Start Collecting" set, maybe also nabbing a rulebook and a codex for him...

Magister Sevrin Loth

Troops
3 5man Tac squads w/ plas + combi-plas

Elites
2 Biker Apothecaries
Centurion Assault Squad

FA
Bike Squad w/ MM atk bike

Hvy Support
Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought w/ two kheres AC and cyclone ML
Land Raider Redeemer w/ MM

HQ and centurions go in the LRR, apothecaries go with the bikers and run over to heal/revive wounded, dreadnought and troops go together

As in two fists? Then the Ironclad, because ant other dread with two fists will be absurdly overpriced (for regular CSM) since you pay full price for each fist. Also be sure to take a Stormraven to Taxi him around if you do. He's pretty slow.

Best "melee" Dread overall is a Contemptor though. Fast and one fist is enough to give people the business. Just don't give him two fists.

Depends entirely on the individual character. There's no rule of thumb like that.
>>
>>55215647

They Ignore Cover, hate buildings, and have Obliterators. They lose some of the advantages of pre-Heresy/Heresy/HERESY! Iron Warriors, like Basilisks, but they are nonetheless pretty good at flushing out dudes from cover.

For added hilarity, face them off against Imperial Fists and now cover is pointless because you both ignore it, and end up slogging through open fields to choke the life out of each other. Just like the Iron Cage. Flavorful.

really tho you have two threats. the bikers and the land raider. the land raider will be pretty much the only tank lvl target you have, so it will be eating all your enimes lascannons, while your bikers will be getting every last heavy bolter and smite on the board. will they last? no, not really. not even sure what the bikers will be doing once in range, the least you can do is give them a melee char to at least give them options.

your tacticals and dred will have to get really close to do any real damg, and they dont seem to have a way to get there in time. a five man tac squad footslogging will die to the most causal of attention, AKA the lasguns/bolters that were split fired from the heavy weapon guys shooting your land raider and bikers.

I say, one, get atleast a rhino for one of your tacticals, maybe even a razor back with some good ranged shooting. two, something to deep strike, go through the list, sternguard with plasmas in a drop pod will work better then on your tacticals. three, if your absolutely determined to use bikers, give them a a source of re-rolls so they can seem threating. forth the dread will have to walk to get into 18'' asuult gun range, so give him regular long range guns wich you despertly needs, and put him on your back feild objective. or better yet five, get some kind of durable back field holder, a thunderfire cannon and some scouts or something, idk, a five man tac isnt going to do it. sixth, what is your libby doing? anwser that, then consider if the points are better spent else where. is he just casting smite? or do you think his points is worth whatever buff your including him for? is he going to cast that more then once when he drops from the land raider?

how are the tech priests going to keep up with your tanks? If the detachment chart was out the window, i'd drop the hellhounds and give some sort of troops in transport to scoot around with the tech priests and maybe grab an objective after droppin him off up ahead. or that little FW Trojan, it give rerolls to tanks, so that could be nice for your hellhammer.

>the best tank in the army atm is the taurox prime with two auto cannons and the mini battle cannon. more fire power then a regular russ, just really squishy. but they also haul the best troops in the army, Scions. if you ignore conscripts that is.

>another important thing with tank armies is keeping away deepstrikers, scout sentinels pre deploy and move before the first turn, so they provide that 9" no go zone. also fulfill fast attack slots for cheap.

>also the codex drops before november is out, so maybe don't buy anything to dependent on exact rule wording yet. AKA the tank comanders.

well I gave you a bunch of suggestions already, but really think of what role your units will play in the whole battle. how many turns will it take for them to do their jobs is a big one. bust out your minis and a tape measure and do a bit of movement practice. moving into position takes a few turns atleast, all the while getting shot. so having something deepstrike turn one will give you a chance to scoot up the board a bit and deal a bit of damage in the critical first turn, where you opponent will have a chance to fire with his whole army at sitting ducks.

go on your favorite app store and look up 'battle scribe' its a good list builder, punch in your units and see how many points you really have to play with. aim for 1500, but 1850 is the common American tournament number.

really though, everything else will work, at least sorta, its your 5 man tacitcals that wont live long enough to deliver plasma shots or hold an objective.

They're robot egyptian human skeletons IN SPAAACE. They're completely derivative and redundant, and before you say most of the races in 40k are, yes you're correct, but Necrons have that problem worst of all of them. They're fucking bland as all fuck, they have nothing going for them another faction doesn't do better.

OOOH WE'RE SPOOKY AND ABOUT DEATH- nigger every fucking army and its brother are about death, Space Marines are Angels of Death, all the humans cover themselves in skulls and spooky gothic robes, Khornates are devotees of slaughter and bloodshed, Dark Eldar are BDSM torture snuff rape freaks, the setting has literal Daemons from Space Hell that want to turn your soul inside out and use it as a cocksleeve, Tyranids already do the inexorable mindless faceless tide of horror far better, Mechanicus have more interesting cyborg robo-aesthetics that don't just look like store brand Terminator, Eldar already have the "unbelievably super ancient no even older than that old as balls super advanced alien race with forgotten super ancient technology" schtick while having a ton of other depth and sub-factions and shit.

Necrons just offer the game literally nothing. They were a fucking mistake. Just redundant noise to take focus away from more interesting factions that have unique qualities which aren't already taken by other factions.

>What niche do the Tau have
Being the new race on the block. They're basically there to represent the races that will take over the galaxy once humans finally fuck themselves to near oblivion the way of the Eldar.

I don't think Necrons are that bad, but they probably gotta be careful about shit they add to the army. Necrons have probably had one of the less focused directions of all the armies, and it feels at times that GW isn't 100% sure what to do with them. Which sucks, but it's not like GW takes fan suggestions anyway.
>>
>>55216535
Not really. Any other Xenos race could do that better.

>>55216539
Tau are the anime mecha-suit and generic, non-gothic sci-fi pew pew race, which actually stands out in 40k since almost all the other races are weird medieval fantasy space opera hybrids. They're also the coalition of various races under one banner Faction, which has Star Wars esque qualities.

I'm not particularly fond of Tau but I have to admit they bring something unique to the game that would be lost without them.

>>
>>55216699
People who spoke directly to Pete Foley said he stated a new faction and a sisters update were both on the wishlist of things they would like to do but have no current plans.

No current plans means the earliest we could see it is over a year away if you know how GW's production schedule works. The things that come out were being worked on behind the scenes for usually around a year and a half before they're available on the shelf.

No I can't prove this to you, but I don't really care. It does mean that with 100% confidence I know you are a fucking liar if you make posts like "new faction coming in December lol it's Interex"

Why do marines try to whack at each other with chainswords, when those have no armor penetration? Wouldn't it make more sense to use the knives instead (easier to slide trough a 'chink' in the armor'?
>>
>>55216708
Yeah, but that's because the Admech have always been a bunch of retards. For anyone who's played for years, I have to assume the way GW has been slowly taking away the satirical "humans use passed down retard science" to, the much more boring "no, really, these guys are good at stuff, we were joking for the first 20 years" has got to be annoying.

And aren't Necrons so advanced that GW had to retcon them to be LESS advanced? Like, by taking away their frictionless drives or some shit?
>>
>>55216748

>>

>>
>>55216748
Chainswords are mono-edged spinning blades.

They're also not really designed for cutting through other Marines, most Marine standard weapons like Boltguns and Chainswords are designed for hacking/blowing apart Orks.
>>
>>55216748
Probably because chainswords are capable of damaging the marine inside more than a knife. They rely on brute force to breach the armor and the chainsword to make the most of it when they do.

Source: my imagination
>>
>>55216733
>No I can't prove this to you
See, at least admitting that makes it more believable.

But you should lead with that, because there is no reason people should inherently believe you. You're an anon on 4chan who has a "trusted friend".

And, I mean, shit... Foley could just lie. It's not like he can spill secret company information to a fan who asks him this kinda stuff. If GW did have any big plans, there would be hell to pay for anyone caught leaking it ahead of time. The main reason I can believe Sisters aren't happening anytime soon is because the rumor has been THE SAME FUCKING RUMOR for years now, and it never came true. Since 8th didn't lead off with Sisters in some way, I just don't see it happening at all.
>>
>>55216825
>And, I mean, shit... Foley could just lie. It's not like he can spill secret company information to a fan who asks him this kinda stuff.
There's a difference between him leaking "yes it's coming" and confirming "no, it's not coming" while staying tight-lipped about what the real releases are.
>>
>>55216769

finding hard to see why your cogs should stick around over the Necrons
>>
>>55216853
Yeah, but there are no consequences for lying. GW isn't a videogame company, but if a videogame company had a secret project and were asked about it, they'd just lie. I believe the story well enough, but of course people will doubt it. Doubt it happening and doubt the truth of what was said even if it did happen. And that's just how GW likes it, us all constantly wondering what the next big release will be.
>>
>>55216061
I'm thinking that advance will let him keep up, 6+D6" and 3" repair range so that he can't easily be left behind, combined with all the terrain the only unit I can see a problem with repairing are Hellhounds. Speaking of them I could drop those in favor of Veterans in Chimeras and run that list as Vanguard instead of Spearhead, making the Lemans squad up into 1-2 Heavy Support slots.

Overall all after reading the past few threads about Lemans being sub-par is pretty sad, since I got into 40k from Dawn of War having said Battle Tanks be my favorite unit. I don't wanna sell them out just yet for Taurox Primes and Scions to be viable, hopefully the codex will give my tanks a break. Especially that 719 point sink Hellhammer that doesn't have Grinding Advance or a Sky Fortress rule equivalent.
>>
>>55216884
I just joined the conversation because I've seen Necrons go from a background detail in Gorkamorka to a real army. I don't play cogs.

Necrons get fucked because they have little to do with humans, and they're "ultimate powerful" in a setting where every army has some "ultimate powerful" scenario. It doesn't help that GW makes so many different Space Marine armies that they take up a lot of the same niches that Necrons might have been able to fill.

Yeah, but that's in part due to Nids and Orks being around since the Rogue Trader days. It would be hard for GW to add ANY new factions just because the game filled out most of the niches early on.

I figure if any new xenos come in, they'll probably be added to the Tau. Making the Tau more of a catch all xeno collective (which seems like the original plan, just hasn't been represented on the table that much lately) would probably make them a lot more interesting.

Can a chainsword cut through power armor? Can a chainsaxe cut through power armor?

Yes

One third of the time, yes.

>>55217279
I meant, as in lorewise. My piss has a 1/6 chance of killing a Terminator in the TT.
>>
>>55217195
i sure love how easy it is to counter that strategy.
>>
>>55217318
Probably. I doubt marines wailing on each other with chain weapons would be so common in the fluff or art if it was impossible lore wise. Chainswords probably aren't the best weapon for the job but I'm sure they can when back by marine strength

a) Having 5< vehicles.
b) Not relying on <5 vehicles to carry your army
>>
>>55217547
Line of sight? If you leave your tanks vulnerable to fire that doesn't even fucking move, it's really your own fault. Either for being a moron or playing with zero terrain.
>>
>>55217170
This will be in everyone's games soon since Chapter Approved will let people design their own Land Raider marks
>>
>>55217547
fucking deepstrike or using your own anti vehicle.

shit laden with lascannons ain't cheap, and losing it to melta vets sucks.

plus you can just hide your shit from it, unless you're one of those fucks that agrees to play on a parking lot. in that case it's your own damn fault.

How bad an idea would a legion of the damned army for smaller games?

A few legionary squads, a captain with the Santic halo for mechanics reasons, maybe a contemptor dread for variety

Custodes, their land raider variant and in general anything with a 2+ save. I can drown most things that are 3+ in S3 fist and lasfun spam, but 2+ shit is rough. Custodes murder my Bullgryn and Straken and wipe my infantry super easily and I don't have a lot of anti tank to deal with Land Raiders.

They do it in the HH books all the fucking time

If your have a series about a million power armored apes swinging electric turkey carvers at a million others, it's likely to happen quite a few times yes.
>>
>>55217875
Your point being? Regular WE grunts with chain axes don't seem to have the slightest problems carving up Smurfs in Betrayer, for example.

Because that's the entire point, marines fighting marines with marine weapons, surprise surprise, marines weapons will successfully kill a lot of marines.

I don't get it. Lascannons aren't a problem at all.

If the opponent brings them in Infantry Squads he can't move without taking a penalty, and had to pay a decent tax for it.

If he brings them in groups of heavy weapons teams they can very easily be targeted and killed.
