Well normally I have primed all my mini's black up to this point, but I decided to man up, and try a different tact. I went for a lighter grey primer. These models are resin as well, as I have only painted plastic before, I"m sort of jumping into the deep end.. Hope they come out well.

For resin, do the same basic painting rules apply? water mixture, layering and brush placement etc?
>>
>>55197700
These knights btw are from Tabletop Miniature Solutions...3rd party provider that sort of stepped up to the plate since GW's killing of Fantasy. They have some really good shit. Link is at the bottom of the OP.

Just finished my baneblade, the main artillery piece of the Armageddon 230th, the Emperor's COBRAs

I'm doing all my commanders as various members of GI JOE's COBRA.

I had to freehand the logo since a stencil failed disastrously. What do you think?
>>

Ehh the quality of the logo is good, but the way it's painted on the tank...looks more like vandalism, rather the name of the squad/unit

>This is the third batch that's gone bad, hate wasting money on it but I don't use it often enough to use it all.
Damn, yeah, that's rather a lot of money. Alumilite sells similar quality stuff for slightly cheaper, but it doesn't last quite as long.

>Do you mean pour it out from the canister into a bag, or just stick the cans it came in into a bag? If the former, what's the reasoning?
Just stick the cans in (separate) bags. I mean, you >could< pour them into bags and then "smoosh"-mix them for fewer air bubbles but the odds of one of the bags rupturing are.. not what I'd want to risk cleaning up after. All you're doing by bagging the cans is adding an extra layer of air-tightness and avoiding getting the shit on your food.

>>55200224
thanks! yeah, I've removed pretty much all the horns from all of them, and it improves their look 100%. They become more reminiscent of Plaguebearers, imo.
and to be fair, most of the conversions are basically face/arm-swaps with other Poxwalkers, just snipped off and re-fitted with glue. its very simple!

Just finished this monster last night. Two solid seeks work but worth it 100%. Learned a lot painting it that would speed up a future bloat drone. Ie: don't attach the guns before painting and then decide to cut them off halfway through. Or paint all the pipes simultaneously to save remixing the flesh tones.

100% ordering a 2nd, monstrous in game too. Those two d6 auto hits at s6

Managed to find a pic online of the arms it used to have, used to love that pointing finger.

I'd love to get the same pointing arm back —not so fussed about the demonic blade — weirdly the demonic blade arm is available on its own on ebay, and not the pointing hand. Go figure!

Bit of a long post, I'm afraid...

I'm getting back into the hobby, and this chap is the first of many to come. I'm pretty happy, all things considered. I dared do some OSL and I think I didn't go overboard with the battle damage of the rifle, and on top of that, I'm liking how the cold white is coming along.

The next thing would be stipling some dirt & damage onto the armour, then using pure white on a few edges & bullet impacts, and then on to the base.

I've got a few questions:
1) I don't know whether to try freehanding a black I symbol on the helmet, or some writing onto the backpack. This would have to be done now, before battle damage& dirt. I got rid of all the ominous imperial imagery, as the background for this inquisitorial warband is more of a low profile operation that tries to blend in with the crowds of the hives. So that would be contradictory... on the other hand, I think it'd look pretty nice. Any ideas? Perhaps some kind of rune instead? I'll be adding abhumans (beastmen) if that's of any help.

2) Once the base is done I'll add snow on both the base and the trooper, so I'm going for a generally cold palette. Should I paint the ground dark brown, or blueish grey, similar to Astrogranite?

3)the black is essentially the old GW Black Ink over the grey/white primer, then some blueish highlights. Should I paint this properly instead? I kinda like it, but the black doesn't feel very deep. I'm also hoping that the ink's shininess disappears once varnished.

Thanks to anyone who bothers to read through all of that.

>>55202048
Absolutely brilliant, you have my respect for that tiny shoulder glass. I'd leave it as is.

>>
>>55204067
They are actually extremely thin (except, perhaps, on the lenses), all those imeprfections are from the minaitures's metal.

The bits on the feet are liquid greenstuff that will later be painted as dirt.
>>
>>55204091
maybe a bit is the metal but if you bought it from gw, it shouldn't look that thicc, even with metal
so i guess it would be then: clean your mini more before painting
thin more

>>
>>55204165
Spent hour and a half cleaning each of them, except for some mold lines on top of the backpack, they are virtually non existent. The only thing left would be to file the whole kasrkin.

The mini may be a recast, for all I know. It's been in my hoard for years.
>>
>>55200450
>>55200443
Wow, that looks really good, but it's like...straight off of the assembly line good. Are you going to weather it and apply some damage?
>>
>>55203721

1) Maybe use a transfer? Either way I think adding something to the shoulder would be a good idea to bring a little colour to the figure. You could use the same motif on one of his knees too.

2) If you're going for a cold tone then some brown with grey or white mixed in. I really think a warm tone to the base and dirt would look cooler though, think Stormtroopers on Tatooine.

3) Definitely get a regular black.

Mmm I have to think about it, part of me likes the clean look of not having anything. The shoulder is an option I hadn't considered.
On the other hand, if I'm going to have abhumans, psykers, sentinels and rough riders, the toned down look might not make much sense.

And as for the warm tone... pic related :P someone madman did it a while ago, and although it looks very nice, I'm really want to set it on a cold world.

These guys should have something and cheaper than GW. But if you really want GW, Osgiliath all the way, I remeber you can assemble quite a lot of different stuff combining the pieces.
>>
>>55204736
For example: http://eurobitz.com/img/p/3-17-large.jpg
They are not reusable, to the best of my knowledge. GW packs them with quite a few of their products, a quick way of getting a motiv on a miniature without having to freehand. Personally I never managed to get them to look good, but plenty of people do.

>>
>>55204824

Yes, they're just painted black. My idea is to pick them out with a gloss varnish.
>>
>>55202428

I just really liked the design of the corvus and imagined it'd be perfect for GK as soon as I saw the text panels.

As you mention though, it's a shame the corvus doesn't have any interior (yet the rear hatch is modelled on the inside, as if they scrapped the interior later in development and left the hatch as is)
>>
Thinking of converting a vindicare assasin, any idea on how I should go about it? I haven't converted anything 40k, just a few simple jobs for sigmar
>>
>>55205261
Gotcha, I was eyeing both as a command transport of sorts and the added hassle of covering or scraping inquisitorial symbols was enough to deter me. Super weird they didn't do an interior for a transport, real bummer as it would be neat to see what the inside looked like for one of the less brick-like vehicles in the imperial range.
>>
>>55205219
I don't believe that will look good, have you considered doing the pearl effect but with blacks, grays and whites?
>>
What is the right scale for tank accessories to apply to 40k guards tanks?
>>
>>55204404
New to 40k here, is this really how the battles play out? It looks a bit... cramped. I thought that with things like 16" movements you'd have a lot more table to work with.

Ayup lads, it's me again. Been a while, hope you're all doing wonderful.
Finally found my Flagellants bodies again!
Since Sergeant Harker and Colonel Straken both got Kairic Acolyte heads, I figured they could use some extra bodies as backup. I'll have to add a Chaos icon and sculpt some extra clothing onto the rags so that it fits with the Neophyte Hybrids arms, otherwise this is pretty much ready to go!
>>
>>55205527

The problem with the pearl effect is that the sunglasses become mostly greyish. I might resort to it though if the gloss varnish doesn't give the effect I desire.

The gloss makes for a slight loss in detail though.
Pauldrons got a bit too much wash/paint on the sides. Has a nice look to it though, might wanna add some brighter bits like the eyes for example. Just to show off a bit of skill.

'Cause at this point of while it looks decent, it looks dumped in wash.

It's a bit dark, will an army painted in that scheme "pop" on the tabletop?
>>
>>55207359
I kinda want them to be a bit dark, because i feel like thats how space marines would be. Im trying to make them as "realistic" as possible, all with a lot of extra mags, sticking with the bolter variants with the mag release near the firing hand, putting scopes on the pic rails, etc. Like if there actually were space marines, how Id imagine them to be
>>
>>55207082
Eh I'm not massively into mechanicum models. I think the old blanche illustrations are much better than the range actually turned out. Still got plenty to do on my Nurgle stuff before I move on anyway. I started them in January and I've got maybe 1100pts painted, so I'm not very fast, trying to figure out what I'm doing as I go along. Plus I'm moving house and everything is going into storage for a bit soon.

I don't have a background in miniature painting. I played 40k back in 2nd edition as a 9 year old but doesn't mean much. If anything I have a general fine art background but I wouldn't really call it that and haven't done any painting in years before I started with the nurgle stuff in January (and a couple of practice eldar guardians and imperial guardsmen). I'm mostly just trying to think through what I'm doing and trying to come up with my own approach rather than following guides.

I said that because oil paints are quite uncommon in this kind of miniatures, while they're commonly used on historical modelling. I would love to see a guide on how you used them on such small models
>>
>>55207664
Looks like he goes well with a Corona
>>
>>55207718
I only used them for the weathering. It's more or less just a wash and the matte finish they go on to makes the wash smear rather than run so it very naturally dirties up the surface. Just takes some fettling to create streaks that look somewhat natural.
>>
>>55207718
>>55207814
And yes I know they're mainly used on historicals, particularly vehicles. I don't tend to follow guides but I've read many to get an understanding of how different paints work. I find historical mini painters have explored everything 40k painters have usually about 10 times over, so they are a great resource.
>>
>>55207859
I agree. A lot of their techniques can be applied to warhammer models, as you said, especially vehicles. I'll try to paint a leman russ with the same care those guys have for panzers.

It's just to prevent you from cruising in with what used to be called a "Basic" weapon in each hand (i.e., no dual-wielding storm bolters!), blazing away. You start with a bolt pistol and a chainsword. You may swap out both or either for weapons in the top list, but are limited to a single item from the bottom list, so you could, for example:

-- Swap your bolt pistol for a second chainsword, and get two extra attacks instead of just one. For shooting, you'd be limited to chucking grenades, though.
-- Swap out both the bolt pistol and chainsword for plasma pistols, and take 'em on all John Woo style.
-- Swap out each weapon with a single lightning claw, resulting in a sergeant with a pair of lightning claws, granting you both a re-roll to wound and one additional attack.
-- Swap your chainsword for a power sword, and swap the bolt pistol for a bolt gun, storm bolter, or combi-weapon.

You'll learn how to pick the right paints in the future when you have more experience. I have bought a couple wrong paints and wasted money, but it's not a huge deal, the paint is much cheaper than the models.

Maybe you can try going down to the store and picking up each pot of a specific color you know you will be using, like blue, and eyeball which one you want exactly. Then just buy that one pot and maybe one shade lighter for highlights.

Generally the colors that will never be useless are black wash, brown wash, gold, silver, brass/bronze/copper, white, black, and brown.

Hello WIP, I am about to start playing Age of Sigmar as I found out some of my old armies have rules, I'm talking about the moonclan goblints (or gitmobs) and the dwarfs (or dispossessed). People seem to hate on legacy players but what can you do.

I have tons of old models unassembled and unpainted, and was thinking of buying some paints to get back to the hobby, thing is don't know where to start as I never was a good painter. Give me some advice on paint sets to get back.

TL,DR: is this a good set to start painting?
https://www.amazon.com/Army-Painter-Miniature-Painting-Warpaints/dp/B01MTXRUUT/ref=pd_sim_21_27?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4NHEZ1VDD3K8R0PJ7NWP
>>
>>55215031

So actually, AoS supports all WHFB armies, but I heard they recently released an update that sort of handicaps or cripples legacy armies. Basically they're still legal, but they lose all their bonuses that the new AoS models would get for fielding a pure AoS army. So you might want to look into that and see if these legacy armies are still actually viable and not just token remnants.

Army Painter is a good brand, and it's cheaper than GW. Their paint box sets are also great value and great for collecting paint ranges. HOWEVER, I bet you will never use even 75% of that set in a single army. Do you REALLY need most of those colors? You may be better off simply buying only the colors you will actually use, whether from Army Painter or another company that makes high quality paints meant for models.

Lastly, if you do decide to stick with Army Painter, keep in mind their primer sprays differently from other spraypaints. It comes out fairly thick and dries fairly fast, so it means you have to not only hold the can very close to the miniature (around 4-6 inches, rather than 8-12 inches), but you have to be careful you don't accidentally hose the miniature down too since you're so close and the can sprays so thickly. It takes some practice, but quick poofs of paint or a rapid misting where you wave the can quickly over the miniatures over and over will help you get a full spray coat without globbing up the model.

Also the Army Painter paints are jam packed with paint. It's a bit wasteful, but you might want to give the thicker ones a squirt on a paper towel to clear some room in the bottle. Then you can shake them up, and make sure to shake them very well and long, because some of them do arrive VERY thick, so make sure to shake them well and also thin them a lot. Certain colors like black will arrive very nice and thin and come out watery but still cover well, so it varies by color. The metallics are great, almost on par with Vallejo Model Air.
>>
>>55215031
I've got two bottles of Army Painter paints, Deep Blue and Army Green. I haven't used the blue yet but the green is a little iffy for me. Not sure how much that helps.

I know legacy is going is getting the hard side of the updates, but I don't plan on going to tourneys, hell, I don't even know any other people that play, I just want to collect some armies so when me and some friends do game nights, we can just play a battle of armies.

With the primer I have an old generic black spray that have worked for me thus far, got it in a hobby shop, its "Bosny" acrilic epoxy. And for the paints I have those 2 armies, and plan on geting ironjawz or slaves to darkness, and some tzeench, so I guess I'll be using a decent range of paints. Doesn't help the fact that I have to import them so its actually cheaper to just bring a big box of paint instad of buying small pots each time I need some.

Thanks for the in depth answer.

>>
>>55215375
Army painter paints are good enough to not have big problems with them so if they're more accessible you should go with them instead, the difference in quality between Army Painter and Vallejo isn't enough to be significant.
>>
>>55215518
thanks anon, I'll consider which one to buy as I found a set of 16 basic paints for 50$ dunno if it beats the army painter deal of 50 paints for 90$ tho, so I'll give it some thought until I can buy them.
>>
do i really need to buy all my paints from citadel? I understand the brushes but i feel like I can get equivalents cheaper from someone else. I mean, it's just paint, isn't it?
>>
>>55216136
No, just buy them from a non-shit company like Army Painter, Vallejo, Tamiya, Reaper, Scale 75, Darkstar, WarColours, Badger, etc.

Don't be buying no stupid ass dollar store hobby poster bullshit.
>>
>>55216136
>I mean, it's just paint, isn't it?

GW is the most expensive miniature paint by far, but trying to skimp on paint and you'll see that it's not "just paint". Cheap paint is shit. There's a reason all the good paint costs way more than the cheap stuff, even if they're not as expensive as GW. They'll still be fairly close.
>>
>>55212337
>>
>>55216136
virtually all of GW hobby stuff is overpriced. You can get better brushes from art supply stores and pain that's at least as good from Vallejo, Reaper, P3 etc.

At the end of the day, not even the biggest nerd can tell which paint was used at a glance.

What you should consider though is their quality. A good acrylic paint adheres to plastics well even without primer. Cheap ones won't.

Cit paints are good, but their pot design sucks. Paints in drop bottles such as Vallejo and Army Painter have better shelf lives than pots.

What would /wip/ recommend for recess shading? A pointed round brush? Which size?
Would you use the same for edge highlighting or would you use a detail brush? Size?

Would you get as many brushes as possible using kolinsky or would you stick with synthetics for most brushes and only get kolinsky for fine detail etc?

inb4 bait
>>
>>55219688
Dunno man, the paint chips on there look more like glitter than battle damage.
Looks a bit too regular. A few bigger scratches that are strategically places in places of mechanical stress or frequent wear would work better imo.

>>55219710
brush size depends on how big an area you paint. Bigger reservoir makes that easier. For small details you may want more control, use a smaller brush in those places.

And as for kolinsky vs synthetics it's a matter of personal preference.
You can paint just as good with a synthetic brush as you would with a kolinsky brush, IF you are actually a good painter.
Synthetics loose their shape faster, but are cheap and therefore easier to replace.
Kolinskys can last a long time, if you take proper care of them, but if you a beginner you are probably gonna kill an expensive brush like that before you learned how to maintain it.

Aside from the price point the real difference is in the spring of the bristles.

Mind you, not all brushes are created equal, so even a kolinsky brush can be a shitty brush if it doesn't have a nice tip. So personally I'd only buy expensive brushes in person and not order online or something like that for those.

TL;DR: try both, learning by doing is the only right answer here

>Celestra grey followed up with ulthuan grey
>cover it with Yriel yellow except for the bottom part, you want to have a small white rim at the bottom
>Next you paint roughly half of it with troll slayer orange

How do I add weathering effects to something like this? I have two things in mind but no idea if/how they'll work:

- localized rust patches on the yellow and metal bits, by using a light sponge with some metallic and then again with brown paint

- weather the entire thing so it's not as shiny clean, but I have no idea how to do this without washes (I don't want to spend a ton on washes either)

My LoTR Spider Queen has arrived and I plan to make an Archmagos of her Drider-style, by attaching the Forge World archmagos to the abdomen.
SQ is a bit smaller than I expected, but I think Draykavac will still fit into the spider abdomen with a little chopping and greenstuffing.

Only problem is that the spider fits neatly onto a 60mm base and Cawl is on a considerably larger one (105x70mm Oval). Can anyone think of a good scenic base to make pic related fill a bit more space? Was going to go with something like industrial wasteland wreckage.

Not entirely a spider theme, it just looks cool, but that's a good plan. Maybe a wall with a few fragments of broken floor around it on the back half of the base and some rubble at the front, connected by a crude cable-web with the spider on top. Would be a pain to sculpt given the weight of metal models, but I could add some foot magnets to allow me to swap bases where required and just disguise them as wall decorations.

Fantastic work on the pattern, bro. Looks immaculate.

Dope lighting - I wonder - are the doors compatible with rhino doors? Because it would be pretty sick to use GK rhino/land raider doors with their logo instead of the xenomortis.
You might wanna do some additional washes on the mechanical, non-armor plate parts or a colored glaze to differentiate them, but it could also be the lighting in the photo.

Some black soot drybrushing on the rear engines and chipping on the front edge would also be pretty rad - maybe using a brown.

Got to wait a bit for more moneys and then China order until I can finish him or do more than some starting WIP, but I can sort out the legs and the base with some cybernetics in the meantime. Will certainly post that when I do it (and have tracked down some Skitarii parts I've lost, bloody bouncy plastic).

Can anyone tell me how the armour on these guards has possibly been painted? It seems like a very light, dusty green
>>
>>55198030
Dude I was constructing my own very first baneblade five minutes ago, I quit to look on here before I'm off to bed. This is really a beatifu rolemodel for what I had in mind for my tank, gritty grey and brown colours that fit well with armegeddon steel legion and death korps. Could you tell me what coulours you used, especially on the coat of the dude on the top hatch?
And I agree with the other anon the "cobra" seems kinda graffitied on instead of a proper paint job but it still looks pretty cool. I myself want to try and write something on it in gothic font though I'm not sure yet how I'll achieve it. Might try and cut it out in paper and spray it on, though I've never tried that before.

Any ideas what causes this?

It's a custodes vehicle and the gold is doing this
>>
>>55227050
I have no idea anon, but could you show us a bit of a wider view of the vehicle. Up close the effect actually looks pretty cool but I'd like to see if it ruins the model or no. If not I'd be very interested in recreating that effect.

Black first
>>

So red, black, gold?
Or black, red, gold?

Either way layman assessment is that be that the next layer of paint did not find proper purchase on laid upon the semi-varnished surface of the red well enough and so peels.
Not much easy fix I'm afraid, down to tedious scraping of affected area until bare model.

I'd say go for it. So many people just take vanilla models and imitate the default GW scheme.... I don't see the point. Take the opportunity to be different, I think this helmet looks pretty good and having a few of them in your army would be a chance to not be just another SM painter/modeler.

Also I like your IF paint job, can't wait to see the next one if your paint jobs are that clean.

Spray needs to bond to a clean even surface, especially metallics, other paint is a shifty surface for that.

I've got a metal one I picked up years ago as a painting project, never actually got past assembling it. It's a lovely sculpt though.

Should cover all the basics you need to know. Ignore what any company tells you when they recommend their own products over another similar one.
>>
>>55228259
Generally I tack things together to prime them, base them and then I re-assemble finally for washes and shading. Of course depends on the scale, how many bits, etc.

The starter boxes are very few pieces so they I would assume are made to be painted after assembly
