What exactly did Beren do to get Silmarill aside from having competent allies?
Also, is the book any good?

I wish to know too. I saw the Children of Hurin at a Value Village, and while overly priced, I did want to buy the book. Are these books good?No anti-Tolkien crap please, we can get that in the tax policy bait threads. If you have an actual complaint though, then go a head.

He had the balls to call the elf king's bluff. Though I guess that too can be attributed to how beautiful and lovely and amazing and wonderful and beguiling and radiant and compelling Luthien was.

Legitimate complaint: Beren can take no credit for retaking the Silmaril. It wasn't him who devised the plan, it wasn't him who fought Morgoth, and best he could do to fight Carcharoth was to feed him his hand.

It's good if you are really into Tolkiens works and want to know how his stories progressed and developed through time. The early stages of these can be pretty weird, for example in one story was Beren aNoldor. There is more poetry in here than in the LotR or the Silmarillion, I found them pretty charming to be honest. They have stronger fairytale vibe than the later version. Good illustrations.

weren't the Silmarils hallowed and only those worthy could touch them without being burned by them?
if so, see above

>Also, is the book any good?
Only if you're a real Tolkien nut. It's not like the Children of Hurin one, with an expanded version of the legend. It's more of a history of the development of the Beren and Luthien tale.
>What exactly did Beren do to get Silmarill aside from having competent allies?
He was the one who was brave or stupid enough to go into the heart of Morgoth's realm. And while he doesnt' have the "magical" abilities his Elven buddies do, he's damn tough in the expanded stuff that book packs. He even beats up Sauron at one point in wolf form (before he meets his girlfriend).
