>>
>>55159690
Theres the soft armor beneath the armor, same thing that you see in the necks of the miniatures and between the articulations. Beyond that, yeah they're naked, the armor needs to be fed their shit and piss to recycle into water and nutrients so wearing clothes is counter-productive.

I think it's easier than assembling them after painting. Trying to line wrists up with hands attached to the guns while not getting glue over your paintjob is harder than painting around the gun to do the chest on cadians at least.

Assembly after painting really only works for marines, orks and skitarii (where you glue the arms to the torso but keep the legs separate) in my experience.

Is it possible to make a voidweaver which doesn't look retarded? The prism cannon seems too good to not take one, but I can't get over how goofy the rear gun seems.

Since I think I've got all the models I want for my Astra Militarum Army (a valkyrie is still unassembled until I think of something better to do with it than potentially be a Scion bus, if for some bizarre reason I don't want to deep strike those), so I've been thinking of expanding my Tzeentch cult second army.

Right now all I have is a pack of Rubric Marines, along with a few cultists I got mostly to examine the style. I also got a box of Neophyte Hyrbids for autogun bits, but there's still plenty of pieces in that box to use for mutant pieces.

I spied a box of Flagellants in the stack of leftover Fantasy models at my FLGS, and thought that some of those bits would be perfect for cultists. Would it be blasphemy if I used those for bits, though? The only Fantasy I ever got into was a bunch of pewter greatswords and a pewter Steam Tank that you could probably bludgeon somebody to death with.

sheer numbers and they're super cheap.

stick them with a commissar and you have the ultimate bubblewrap. They have hundreds of shots, and sure they're wounding on 6s on anything of significant armor, but the sheer volume of shots will tear through most things.

example you might want snipers. 2sniper rifles do diddley. more means duplicate units

Is anyone supposed to be so impressed by the new and constant fluff about the Heretic Astartes of the Long War that they fawn over how they had to battle countless infirmities and foes over thousands of years just to have a chance to fight the servants of the 'false emperor'?

Because to me, It only makes the average loyal Astartes even more amazing. To me, the average loyalist is surrounded on all sides in a hostile galaxy - and all he has is his faith in the God Emperor, his faith in his battle brothers, and his faith in his bolter. Blessed is the loyal heart, damned is the traitorous soul.

Greetings from NOVA
>>
>>55180371
There are three different looking versions of blood thirster with different weapons.

I'll let you decide what you should do with that information.
>>
>>55180301

Chaos ones and renegades do. Loyalist ones would only be "mercenaries" for Inquisitors or other marines, like a more famous chapter master or Primarch. which isn't really mercenary work.
>>
>>55180740
Chaos ones don't. Unless you count Berzerkers killing the enemies of a warband, and then that warband, for free.

How important is having a psyker in your army in general?
>>
How good are the armies in Dark Imperium as a core to build up around? I've been holding off getting into 40k but 8th ed looks interesting and the death guard models look pretty sweet.
>>
>>55180939

Get three sets of starter Plague Marines and you're good to go to shit on most armies. Primaris marines can be decent by themselves but require more tools to perform consistently well.
>>
>>55180817
Most likely Players, Wraithguards, Wraithknights, Shadowseers, and a few sets of Skyweavers/Starweavers.
>>
>>55180892
Depends on your meta. You might want one for denying shit if lots of psykerfags pop up in your area.

IG is op this edition, as long as you ignore tanks

I want to use Cypher and Fallen in my CSM list (I have a LOT of CSM stuff, Thousand Sons army, Death Guard, and just CSM), but I dont know what role they can really serve. All I can really think of is throwing them in a transport with ccw's, plasma pistols, and charge them into combat.

Any other thoughts?

>>
>>55181862
Culexus being taken ruins your legion tactics
You should put him in his own detachment

You need to run 2 HQ units in a battalion detachment

Tac squads can only take one heavy weapon in them, unless you mean only 2 of those squads have missile launchers

Devastators generally are better off with weapons other than heavy bolters.
I don't think your list really needs more massed fire.

Anything else would put them over the point limit, so I guess I should just ditch them.

I have downloaded Battlescribe, the numbers do indeed work out.

I'm considering getting into 40k after playing a demo game at a convention. I always thought that there were Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Xenos and Chaos Xenos and some random other factions to play (like Imperial Guard and Necrons).
But apparently there is a million Space Marine chapters that all play differently?
Is there a beginner friendly guide that's a bit accessible on what's what?
Also where can I get caught up on Lore?
What is considered the usual/normal army size?
What else should I be aware of before starting?

Thanks, lads
>>
>>55185532

Space marine are usually where people start, but i'd have a look at all the factions first and see if anything really grabs you before just defaulting to them.

The rulebook has a great primer in the front. there are links to the PDF and EPUB in the OP. Go have a geeze if you haven't already.
>>
>>55185532
>But apparently there is a million Space Marine chapters that all play differently?

Only chapters and legions of first founding like ultra marines or thousand sons have big diffrences between them. Even then my dear sweet alpha legion has almost no toys. Don't worry about that too much.
>Is there a beginner friendly guide that's a bit accessible on what's what?
I believe there's an official magazine about SM. But our OP should be more than enough.
>Also where can I get caught up on Lore?
Wikipedia or lexicanum, just pick whatever you want and read it. Some novels are good but that's a diffrent question.
>What is considered the usual/normal army size?
Depends, most of people play either 1k/1050 or 2k points. Power levels are bad and used only for pickup games.
>What else should I be aware of before starting?
Start collecting! boxes are really good value and if you wanna start just get one-two of those.
NEVER buy any finecast miniatures
ForgeWorld miniatures may be banned in your store, due to past experiences as those were pretty OP. Doesn't apply to GW stores.

Honestly 1d4chan isn't a bad place for a beginner to start. It will explain things and describe the factions although it's a bit memeish. Also ignore the rules stuff, it's out of date.
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000

If you want a dryer but more canon description of the factions and background try Lexicanum.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

For learning the background the best place to start is actually the Rulebook. You'll want a copy eventually, and it comes in the "Dark Imperium" starter set. But you can also find a link to it in the megaupload links in most other 40k general threads.

In 7th edition I started building the 5th Company of the Dark Angels (after I started Deathwing in 6th) to supplement my army. With the new pPrimaris marines, I've caved and bought the store-anniversary captain. I want to add a force of primaris marines but not in my company, which is already planned out, so I'm considering adding a successor chapter to my collection which will be fully primaris. I plan to use them alongside my Dark Angels.

Any suggestions for a successor chapter? Do I pick an existing one? One of the ultima founding maybe? Or create a new one? I kinda like the Angels of Redemption and Blades of Vengeance.

Ahoy!

For those of you in need of a good way to convert such symbols to painted objects, freehanding is a thing of the past!

I come with transfers. HOMEMADE TRANSFERS!

Printed using a standard high-DPI printer (versions for both inkjet and laserjet are available) and combined with a layer of clear acrylic spray, you can make any shape you want. It's not as cheap as simply painting it on, but it works.

A few caveats: if you're making an image that has white in it, you'll need to be creative, since white in printer-language is 'don't put ink here'. instead, print (onto a white transfer sheet) a background for your transfer that matches the paint that you're using. Hex codes will get you close enough, and most GW and Vallejo codes are available here:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

I hope to see some amazing transfers out of all of you. Get to it!

>>
>>55185856
Probably because they keep the older pages for those who still play those editions for some reason or another.
>>
>>55185889
Most Space Marine armies at 1000 points are usually at the Battalion level, which is 2 HQs, 2 Troops, and extras for fire support. something like 30 guys between your leaders, your meat and potatoes, and your fire support. Then a few vehicles or field guns on top of that.

At the 2000 point level you start to use lots of heavy units like terminators and centurions, so it's not an even ratio. 40 or so models is probably right, including vehicles. Unless you want to blob up, but that's not too effective as Space Marines.

Guard, on the other hand, can run something like 50 dudes without even breaking 200 points. A 2000 point army is likely to have something on the order of 75-90 men, between the main force and fire support. Increased tank density will roll that back into the 50 model range, but that's what the other end of the specturm looks like.

Guardbro here, I usually end up with 80 or so models in a 2k game. I'm a bit of a treadhead though.

If I'm up against a strong army I go the 'double barrel' of 2x50 Conscripts, which jacks the model count into the 130s. It's seriously strong, though; I haven't lost a game with it yet.

Got a FUN game today vs probably Nids but maybe Death Guard. Narratively were saying that Company Commander King Nigger Jew was giving a last minute inspection of the Strongpoint before it got packed up since the campaign was almost over and the battle lines were miles away. Seismic activity/warp fuckery however awoke a burrowed enemy force right on their doorstep and the only reinforcements they could secure in time was a small Scion force that just happened to be in the right orbital position. Wish me luck, I expect to fall holding the line.

Holy nutballs, that's dumb. Just paint 'em in PLA camo and use a different paint tone for the skin.

Or paint 'em brown, and use ENDF camo.

Or JSDF, or...does this mong even understand that these guys are supposed to be 'generic human male in armor'?

The reason tallarns and elysians and mordians catachans and kriegers and steel legionnaires have their own look is because it's too far from 'modern armored infantry' to be doable with a paint job.

Meanwhile LITERALLY EVERY MODERN ARMY CAN BE REPRESENTED WITH A CADIAN AND A GOOD PAINT JOB.

This article sometimes reads like much ado about nothing. I'm not sure it really matters that a miniatures company doesn't make some of their professional painters paint some of the models black or yellow solely for diversity's sake. What purpose do command squads have now anyway?
The only thing i use them for is carrying special weapons instead of a special weapons squad for that 3+ hit for the same price
my officers either stay with veterans for added protection or run around with the infantry, which defeats the purpose of having a small 4 man squad carry a vox caster
the fact that they're not in the same unit as the officer anymore defeats the point of running them as a "command" squad instead of a regular squad
>>
>>55186266
I don't understand your point broham. Maybe I'm being dumb but I'm not using the command squad to vox, I'm using it to man the fort since I can't afford a full vet team AND the Bolters. The Prime is going to drop next to probably the volley gun team and use their vox to order the other two teams as needed. Do I misunderstand vox rules in 8th? I don't have my index on me but I thought I just needed to be within 3" of one?

That. Scion command squads are 4 plasma drop fuckers while regular guard squads are pretty much the same. Before it was faq'd to 1 command per HQ people were throwing three squads of plasma in chimera for a 24 Overcharge shot surprise when they disembarked.
>>
>>55186567
No, you're not wrong. The way the Vox rule is written now is that you just need two vox casters, one next to the commander and one in the ordered squad. The commander's vox doesn't have to be in a command squad anymore.

They get the medic, extremely high weapon density, and in the case of non-scion command squads, they get heavy weapons at BS 3+.

That's about it, though.
>>
>>55186616
Yeah, vox-wise you're good. Though I still raise the objection of devoting half your points to fortifications.

Seems to me it's a bit like bringing a 500-point Super-Heavy to a 1000 point game.

>>55186638
It hits on 5s. Its actually pretty terrible for its cost. Peach-anon got convinced to get it and immediately regretted it. You could do 200X better with any equivalent super heavy.

Can any admech players here tell me what Haywire's good for now. So far my Arc Breachers have killed 1 Rhino in 5 games. When they hit they seem to hit real hard but the problem is actually wounding something, they just seem like a more expensive but worse lascannon at this point.

I want to combine a Battlefleet Gothic game and a warhammer 40k game. For those of you that sill know the BFG rules:

Would giving the attacker +1 CP in the 40k game for each landing point he generates in orbit be appropriate? I'm unsure if that wouldn't escalate too much.

>tfw you cant paint a human a human skin tone
>>
>>55187030
Its certainly possible, but things like Autocannons or overcharged Plasma would have a field day with you, so they'd probably need some support. But as part of a larger force, yeah they'd be good.
>>
>>55186994

If you want to just fuck your shit up, do BFG for space, and translate it into Epic on the ground (larger victories in Space equal larger/more successful landings on the ground). Then 40k proper games for small skirmishes on the ground against HVTs and Zone Mortalis boarding actions against enemy ships in space.

Trying to track this would make your head explode, and the rounds would be glacial because nested sub-games (boarders, skirmishes) would have to be played out before the larger fields (BFG, Epic) could move on. It'd be like the wargame equivalent of MtG's Shahrazad card.

Check the wording on their index/codex entry. If it says may take a power sword instead of may replace/trade/swap bolter for power sword then you can, otherwise not.

Bolters being gyroget weapons would have negligible recoil for a power armoured marine though so I'm sure they could fire it in one hand.

Generally speaking though, he's right. Most models can either take a ranged weapon or a melee weapon(s) and pistol.

The bike and rider are fused together, with the bike itself looking like nothing else in the 40K universe. The only thing that comes relatively close is the design of the Skullcannon of Khorne. I was going to make a few of my GSC guys black, but I started with my aberrants, and the black one looks a bit odd due to the purple splotches of skin I added more or less blending in with the brown. Why open a GW instead of a general Store that also makes money of MtG and other games as well as warhammer. Then again you probably will just be a contractor and have to pay (and buy) whatever stuff they send you. local LGS owner sits on a lot of Warhammer related stock that he kinda has to discount away because they were made redundant by all the SC! and special Deal Boxes. he does make a lot of cash by doing tournaments and mtg related stuff though

They still have an army wide rule that does nothing if they aren't fighting daemons. It's just that Smite ensures Psykers have a base level of offensive utility. Any psyker heavy force has this to some degree.

>the lack of individuality on primaris
This was probably the worst thing about the 30th anniversary model
I like the Primaris sculpts in general, but the one they used for the anniversary is almost literally something you'd get from the Intercessor kit with a sword glued on the hip. I know they want to push the new hotness, but why couldn't they have done a unique looking model? The Gravis Captain for example, while I know not everyones cup of tea, is at least a distinct look that you're not going to get from a basic kit, I can't understand why they didn't do something like that.
>>
I am looking at the sanctic halo in the codex, the errata removes the part that says UM captain only. Does that mean you can slap it on any characer? Even a named one?

Or does this mean any SM captain/chapter master

>or you have to admit there's differences between ethnicities that go beyond skin color.

Of course there are common defferences in phenotypes that are associated with skin color. Blacks of West African descent often have broader noses for example. That's the kind of thing that could be reflected in a model. There's definitely a bare head on the Deathwatch's sprue that I've felt looked much more like typical black features than the usual bare marine head.

Out of the mists of Chaos he rides,
a bike in his crotch and a sword at his side!
DOOOM Rider! Doom Rider. Na-na, na-na.

He fights his own war, takes his own track,
If he doesn't just bail he might make his points back!
DOOOM Rider! Doom Rider. Na-na, na-na.

A son of Slaanesh, so full of desire,
He's doing cocaine and his head is on fire!
DOOOM Rider! Doom Rider. Na-na, na-na.

He fights with the fury of a dozen men,
Two turns on the field - then he's gone again.
DOOOM Rider! Doom Rider. Na-na, na-na.

Bike Blades plowing through Imperial Guard,
Flame skull grinning, daemon sword getting hard.
DOOOM Rider! Doom Rider. Na-na, na-na.

>Of course there are common defferences in phenotypes
Not according to tumblr.
>>
>>55189031
There's a difference between minor physical features found in some but not all genetic groups people with different skin color and using those minor differences to prop up shitty pseudo-science about how your own race, whatever that may be defined as, is inherently sociologically or psychologically superior.

I don't have it on hand but there was a story (possibly apocryphal, I'll admit) about how someone brought up the phenotype differences that are used in forensics to ID murder victims in an anthropology class and got called a racist.

I have a friend who is taking anthropology right now, and from the stories I hear it might as well be tumblr: the class.

Why are named characters seemingly a good 20% more effective for their points than everything else? I don't think there's a point efficient way to counter Magnus for example.
>>
>>55189315
Just shoot him with lascannons lmao
>>
>>55188462
>primaris are off the table
Why? Codex confirms they have some
>>
>>55189315
Because named characters are cancer, and so is everybody who uses them outside of scenarios.

I am new so I am not entirely sure, but it seems that of the chapters I like only one of the characters is good.

I like crimson fists and red scorpions.

I like named characters for the fluff it brings to the army

>I like named characters for the fluff it brings to the army
You mean the retinue of this one guy in 10 000 years of history, just like the other 5 armies that use that character? sure.
>>
>>55189755
Not sure what you mean, only crimson fists use pedro
>>
>>55189782
10000 years of history to draw armies from. your army is Pedro's retinue, which is the same fucking army as every second other crimson fist army. Using him for matched games as 'fluff' is ridiculous, make up your own shit you lazy git.

I'm not a good author though, anything I come up with will be cringey and cliche

Congrats, you're qualified to write a trilogy for Black Library!

I have a few ideas, not sure where to post them to get c&c on them. It's probably garbage tier fanfiction
>>
>>55190437
My idea is essentially the maimed survivors of isstvan III, mainly ones in sarcophogi strong enough to survive the virus bombimbs, are offered to join the iron hands to continue the fight for the emperor.

However with many of them being from traitor legions, they refuse to bring that shame upon the IH, especially ones tracing back to fulgrim.

So they form their own chapter, intimately tied to the IH, but unwilling to truly join them until they repent for their traitor counterparts.
>>
>>55190856
It would be a dreadnought heavy "chapter" if you can call it that, IH tactics for sure. I think perhaps some color scheme similar to IH but using the heraldry of their previous legion similar to how the deathwatch does it?

However they wouldn't be a symbol there to show pride in, more like a scar that they wear as penance.

I looked for a thread for this and didn't see one which is why I am posting here
